    The only people still running lead-acid or AGM batteries for their trolling motor or electronics are folks who just don't understand the math that separates "cost" from "value". You can maybe still buy a lead-acid battery for less, although most AGM's cost bascially about the same, but the performance you get from LFP batteries is 4 times as good. You get twice the run-time out of a battery that weighs half as much, plus they will last 2 or 3 times longer, at a minimum. Something a lot of folks fail to grasp about the LFP batteries is how their capacity DOES slowly become less and less, but unlike lead-acid or AGM, when these get "old"...they're still perfectly usable! With lead-acid or AGM, they just won't hold enough voltage anymore, to run your stuff. That doesn't happen with LFP - you just have reduced amp-hours worth of capacity...they still work just fine! :)

    fyi that is not a smart charger , charging is controlled by the bms. the charger just puts out 14,v or so. also if you live in a cold climate please get low temp protection on the bms... E Even with a hobby grade lithium charger , it delfaults to bms control. issues with motor and lifepo4 is alternator output. and there are lifepo4 batteries for starting but the bms is the big cost. don't advise you using lifepo4 unless you know what you are doing as a starter battery. the mini's do ok but most are flat pack lifepo4 set up. check your amp draw on your trolling motor before you purchase a battery. some older TM draw high amps as the brushes get worn. guy had a old minn kota 45 lb and it was pulling 85 amps going straight to hi. when it shouldn't be over 40 amps. swapped out his brusshes and 38 amps bms never tripped again. prices are coming down almost not worth building your own lifepo4 batteries. there are plenty of people who tear these batteries down and look at build quality etc. will prose is probably the best at this and has the knowledge of construction etc. do not try to charge a frozen lifepo4 , be a bad day. there are better options coming soon. built a 200ah 24v and can go days in the stratos. don't fall into the trap that certain american co. batteries are better lol, there buying the parts and building them then charging you top dollar. have repaired sevral that were just poor constuction , used cells etc.

      Every battery with "lithium" in it, is technically a "lithium ion" battery. Doesn't matter if it's Li-NMC (nickel, manganese, cobalt), Li-NCA (nickel, cobalt, aluminum oxide), Li-Po (lithium polymer), Li-Titanate (lithium titanium oxide) or Lithium Iron-Phosphate. They are ALL "lithium ion" batteries. However, you are right, this chemistry is not "lithium ion phosphate".

    What are your thoughts of running two of the 50ah on a 24 volt trolling motor. (Minn Kota Powerdrive)

    • @TinyBoatNation
      @TinyBoatNation  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It will probably do very well because you’ll need less power because you have higher volts versus running it on a 12 V trolling motor who’s constantly running it wide-open throttle just to make the boat move

    What about the power queen group 24 smart edition it’s still 100ah and you can use it as a starting Battery since you can pull 500 max amps at 1 second and something like 20amps to charge it so that should be OK to run if you’re out board motor has a 55 amp alternator I’m about to try

    • @jasonbroom7147
      @jasonbroom7147 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      NO! Do not try to charge any LiFePO4 battery from a standard generator, alternator or magneto.

    • @ericklein5097
      @ericklein5097 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lithium charging is a simple CC CV.
      Constant Current
      Constant Voltage
      Your charger needs a voltage limit set and a current limit set. Most LiFePO4 can charge at 0.5C ie a 50Ah would be 25A and a 100Ah would be 50A. Recommended charge rate is typically 0.2C and will help you get the full 3,000-5,000 cycles out of it even if you discharge down to 0% ie 100% DOD.
      So for a 100Ah 12.8V nominal battery you’d want a 14.6V 20A charger..but up to 50A is ok
      Max charge voltage doesn’t have to be 14.6V….look at a graph of the charge curve and you’ll see at 14V (3.50v per cell) they are at 95%-98% full. Downside is most BMS’s don’t begin balancing until the very top because balancing in the middle actually unbalances the battery because from 10% to 90% SOC voltage does not equal SOC. 3.28V per cell (without a load) can be 50% SOC or 70% SOC.
      Also keep in mind that once you remove the charger a 12V will settle down to 13.3V or 13.4V. That’s the natural resting voltage of the larger prismatic cells. If you put it on a charger it will fly right up to 14.X volts within a minute or two. If it sits in the mid 13’s for more than a couple minutes with a 0.2C charge rate then it isn’t full. This is why it is highly recommended to use a coulomb counting meter. Knowing how many amp hours have gone in or out is the only way to know SOC

      @@Fairdemand554 Not necessarily in terms of maximum continuous draw. Check the battery manufacturers specs, a lot of the the 50ah are rated for 50 amps continuous draw, but not all.
