- The EPIC Journey BEGINS! Driving my Porsche Taycan EV Electric Car from Leeds to Dover to meet with Geoff Buys Cars for the start of our 1200 mile trip from Calais to Benidorm. Old Volvo Vs EV. Who will get there first and more to the point who will get there for the least amount of money. Is it cheaper to charge an EV or fill up with Petrol on the car journey south through France and down to Souther Spain? Let the Road Trip commence.

well done lee for thinking about your mom while going on your mega trip, all the best.
I completely agree with 'Pre-Conditioning'. I've tested it and noticed that every time I pre-condition my gas tank, the fill up is much quicker!!!
Pre-conditioning a gas tank is simply removing the gas cap prior to grabbing the nozzle. That always saves me 5 seconds.
@@JoeBManco 🤣
Hang on, am I missing something here? You're getting all giddy about how much cheaper it cost you to get to Dover. So where does the 100 grand you lost on that thing come into play?
😂😂😂😂😂😂
The views on his videos pay for the car, that’s how it comes into play. He’s not as stupid as he likes to make out!
120 grand mate
He's only lost 100k when he comes to sell it. If he had any sense he'd keep the car at least 10 years and only sell when a new battery is required
@@dps615 was a 4 year PCP, he will hand it back next year.
Nice to see you’ve worked out how to use your car after 2 1/2 yrs!! 😂😂
Let's appreciate the fact, that Lee always gets out from his car twice 🎉
Lol
We need an hour special on the merits of reading a manual !!! Lee looks genuinely in love with charging now. Bovril on standby
I absolutely love that you have your Mum beside you today I am sure she is enjoying it as well ❤
❤️
@@TheMacMaster ❤️
WELL SAID GUYS get out there and just have fun, I am 68 now Lee and started out life as a Butlins Redcoat and I have never stopped laughing and smiling and never will. So enjoy it while you can. Stay safe both of you.
Once you get to Benidorm you will have a wide choice of 42 public chargers to use... Not bad for a town with over 60,000 full time inhabitants.....
And just 10 fuel pumps for tourists because all the residents have free petrol coming from a tap on their wall.
When I worked the pumps in 1969 it was 32p a Gallon 4* at a REPSOL Station, diesel 27p per Gallon
Yer, it's gone up mate
Driving tunes: Santana’s Samba Pa Ti, Dobie Brothers Long Train Running, Van Morrison Brown Eyed Girl and Curtis Mayfield;’s Move on Up. Plus many more! Safe travels. Best wishes, Colin.
Porche offered you a higher exchange rate because of WHO you are Not the worth of the car The same as all the places you eat in (Oh we always serve 16oz Haddock to our customers :-) )
Nostalgia ain't what it used to be, but I found a photo when I was a kid working on the petrol pumps and the petrol was less than 20p a GALLON !
I remember the day and the garage when my dad complained petrol got to 50p per gallon
You must be old. I’m 57 and remember 80p a gallon and I remember when the local petrol station in my home town put the price up to £1.00 a gallon and an extra digit was required. 😁
@@st200ol1973/4 petrol was 25p per gallon after decimiliseation
@@paulscott1759 I don't remember much from when I was six and certainly not something like the price of petrol.
I wonder if Geoff chose a petrol car to give you a chance Lee? 😆
Lee, thank you for sharing your memories, your dad looks like a character, love the dry sense of humour.
Geoff made a couple of videos about getting his car (turned out to be more than one car) ready for the challenge. He did a live stream wandering around Millau looking for pizza. But this is the first video actually "on the road". So I'm calling that a win for Lee, fastest TH-camr.
As Basil Faulty said "it's not the disappointment that gets me down it's the hope"
How much of the trip did you use A/C in the car?
The amazing thing about this video is the fact that out of about 180,000 subscribers to your channel and possibly tens or even hundreds of thousands of other people who have viewed your EV videos, nobody ever told you about how to properly charge your car using the built-in sat nav. Your primary gripes against EV's was the inconvenience and slowness of the charging network. Not only is this faster but it's actually cheaper to charge this way avoiding the high cost third party chargers that don't offer discounts that Porsche does. It really negates most of your previous arguments against EV's.
I was also thinking about that offer Porsche gave you for your car. I think you should go for it. When you consider that you won't have to pay for maintenance and other expenses, it's really a better deal, especially with the increased efficiency. You were so over your projected miles, I think the dealer was being very generous.
"nobody ever told you about how to properly charge your car using the built-in sat nav.".... I suspect the Porsche dealerships don't mention this feature because you don't want to be told that your new, super sleek, very expensive sports car may choose to constrain its top speed and acceleration in favour of managing the remaining battery in order to make it to your next desired charging point.
Yes, Lee, it is a bit of fun for sure but also serious and informative also. It is a real world challenge of driving an EV vs. a petrol car for a long distance.
I think that Geoff needs a cricket bat NOT a baseball bat because his debit card will bond to the bats flat surface.😅😊.
If you're going to calculate the cost are you going to include the cost of depreciation for the trip? Geoff is going to sell his car for what he bought it...
Exactly! EV owners always turn a blind eye to this.
If you run the car over the lease / pcp for the monthly payments you have agreed, and then hand back the car, there is no depreciation. The fact his youtube views also fund the car makes it a brilliant business choice. He knows exactly what he’s doing.
Love these challenges!! Maybe in the future you could get @steve-Marsh involved to be the one going by boat and train
Lee taking his Mum on the trip is a nice touch.
(Geoff's car looks brilliant ... in my opinion).
Speaking of choc in general. I bought a twix in a petrol station yesterday, haven't bought one for ages, it was £1.05 and as I ate this and held the twix in my hand and thought, how large my hand looked holding the tiny twix.
My first twix was around 1967 and cost an old silver six pence which equated to 2.5 pence! 6d.
Do you remember wagon wheels, they were huge, 2 new pence.
I'm sensing a change of mind blowing through here.. Suddenly it's not about "I'm going to prove EV's are not the future" to "It's just a couple of blokes having a larf, it's not a competition...."
It's Car keys in the ashtray ahoy as 100% our Mac's next car will be a EV. I wait with baited breath..
He's anticipating the demise of his future subscriber base as people slowly get bored of this anti-EV clickbait, so he's changing tack and softening his hardline 'not the future'.
Of course it will. He's been more than rumbled for lying about hating his EV. His comment sections are full of dissent. But its his business model.
Now he's trying to let you all down gently so he can reverse without losing his revenue.
I heard he's planted Pampas Grass in his front garden as part of his house renovations....
Swwwwwwwing....
I started watching this video and realised itv3 are showing the over 70s lawn bowling and competitive jam making for a 3 hour marathon so I'm off. ....
Being told what to do by an onboard computer. Stanley Kubrick certainly got that right with HAL 9000 in 2001 A Space Odyssey
Didn't you have to register with TH-cam to post a comment?
Ironic.
At last, some happy fun to watch for a bit. Thanks Lee, a proper antidote to the other news today!

Thanks for sharing your home video with you and your dad. I wish I had video with my dad. I lost my dad last year, but I don’t have any audio recordings of him. Best of luck to you on the trip.
Ok think I’ve made a huge mistake and would like apologise to our lovely net zero government , I’ve bought a new vehicle from my local dealer and I wasn’t forced or offered anything than needs to charged up , it runs on fossil fuels , should I be embarrassed ?
No because you had a CHOICE and you chose what was right for you. Onwards my friend.
No, because the car will most likely last much longer than an EV and is therefore better for the environment😁
No. But you might like to question all the boomers claiming they are being forced to buy EVs.
It seems to be one of the main reasons for not buying one. You even allude to that myth in your post.
Before I see the car he bought, would it be a Volvo T5?
I dont own a computer, only a phone, managing quite nicely thanks👍
Unwittingly parked next to a charging bay at the sports club yesterday in the underground car park in my mk4 diesel Mondeo. Playing with fire next to all the shiny Tesla's. One of us, one of us.
You're supposed to notify your insurer if you go NEAR 'one of us'!!
Sniff 'n' The Tears - Driver's Seat is a good song to drive by 😊
Macmaster and Geoff buys cars is a great duo .. two brilliant channels together 👍
Say hello to your mum Lee.she was great.❤
A real race Geoff would win by a mile if he bought a suitable car. There are plenty of diesels out there that would do it with 1 fuel stop. He could do Calais to Benidorm in 18 Hours for half the price of the EV. The car he has chosen will make it close.
Yeah but an EV can be very powerful and effiicent at the same time. If you want a fast car thats dirt cheap to run, not possible with ICE.
@@usefulrandom1855 speed limit is 81 mph in France. A big diesel Audi will cruise at 81mph whilst doing 60mpg. 16 gallon tank so will do 950 miles. Followed by a 5 min fuel stop. No electricity car can compete with that?
Geoff has bought a hearse to put his family in. The end to this story could have more than a small amount of irony.
20,000 miles to show EV's are not fit for purpose... Reads manual.... complains that car charging is too quick. Well done for becoming one of the biggest EV advocates.
If you had a Tesla, you wouldn't need to keep turning your milk float on or off. You just walk to it. The doors unlock, touch brake, select gear and go. Visa versa getting out. The charging starts and stops seamlessly too with a Tesla ❤
Radar Love by Golden Earring is the ultimate driving song. No discussion necessary.
Citroen BX estate, there's a weapon... the spaceship became a McDonald's and is sadly no more.
Confused why you haven’t been using the inbuilt sat nav before? So you’ve never been preheating the battery before today ?
Enjoy the videos with you and Geoff 😊It is a bit of fun and people shouldn't take it so seriously 😮It is about choice and I want to keep driving my petrol cars and manual at that!!😊And it was good to see Happy Eater.Brings back memories of my dad driving his Morris minor traveller up to Berwick-upon-Tweed from Warwickshire with us kids asleep in the back 😊😊

You need the high vis jacket to be accessible not in the boot. There is no need for breathalyser . Devises with speed camera recognition are illegal.
Illegal. 😂 I don't care. 😂 got waze on. Told me where all the speed cameras are. Stuff em. 😂
Thanks Lee for your latest video. You wont change my mind re any Evs though. Am pleased porshe have fixed your car and told you various things you didnt know about your car. I will definitely keep driving my 2004 Rover 75 and hope one day meet up with you, Regards Keith x
Best of luck.Love the banter
Nice touch taking Mom along.❤
"Preheats your battery" = Reduces the range.
Don't have to pre-heat the battery in my petrol.
Not an issue though since it's done when arriving at a charger which rapidly replaces that.
Summer you cool them, winter you warm them, to get the most range.
@@jacobjensen408 We don't do much cooling of them in summer in the UK, still not warm enough, that's wishful thinking! 😁
@@dingopisscreek don't have to put petrol in an EV so there's that subtle difference I guess? :)
Great video Lee. I have to disagree with you on Geoff's car as I love the Volvo's colour.
Great journey to Dover you learned alot about charging ,evangelists were right !!!!!! Have a great trip you and Geoff and mum making memories. So onwards my friends
The only thing that differs is filling up time, 5 min or 30 min. Costs is depending on you charging network and not cheap..
Also Lee those fast chargers are a very very very very BAD IDEA as like a Smartphone the faster you charge it the faster the lifespan of the battery reduces

I really like the color of the Volvo. It's different and looks sporty and so does Jeff's hat.
‘Flamin hot’is the best Monster Munch flavour.
Suits EVs as well.
Haha brilliant
A couple of things will never cease to amaze me: the time it takes to negotiate with the charging station before you can charge. How much time is wasted in headaches there with the different apps and systems?
And the other thing that you are not just driving where you want to go but you are driving where you can go to charge your car, so obvious with the video.
Thank you Lee I love these journeys with Geoff buys cars would also like to thank you for the memories of ur dad u shared and I'm glad ur taking ur mom she would be saying come on Lee we have got this bless her looking forward to all the rest of the videos as well as Geoff, s video ur both a great team and a great laugh 😊😊
Santander to Portsmouth on the ferry isn't overnight. Its nearly 30 hours
Now you're getting it. Maybe. Enjoyable vid. Nice one.
He's £100k out of pocket. He won't get it back. It's a liability on wheels.

Fantastic video looking forward to the rest of the journey. Main observation from footage at Dover I didn't realise how much taller than Geoff, Lee is.
You asked if anyone today doesn't have a smartphone. Me! I have a dumb phone, a Casio F-91W watch and a Peugeot 107. I just get up on a morning and get on with my day. No planning routes, no working out where charging points are, no having to continually tap touch screens because they're not working, no checking social media because I'm not on it, no time buggering about with apps, no stopping for sandwiches at garages, no reeling through options on my watch. It's called a stress-free life.
Lee, please also consider time wasted on charge time. Your rate is £50 per hour LOL. Wow Premier Inn, I can just see Lenny Henry walking in to welcome you guys.
he is making lot's of money with the ev vlogs don't worry about him😜 alot more than a measly £50 pound's per hour👍

This just sounds to me that the car tells you where to go.... Where will it end? Just handing more and more control over.
Price per litre in that old clip, Lee. I have recordings from then of garages and the fuel prices. Two weirdos filming the price of fuel 😂😂
Traffic jams would work in your favour. If Geoff was stuck, he'd be burning his petrol even though he's going nowhere, while all you will be using is the air con. - - - You were talking about needing a wee, then went on to say you had all your things ready and prepped! EV drivers think only having time to use the toilet, get a sandwich and a coffee is a quick stop 🤣
And you do all three, then spend 20 minutes at the petrol station. "Because its quicker" 🤣🤣🤣
Do you normally piss your pants then to save time? 🤣
The ultimate driving song and it can't be beaten is ... " Tom petty Running down a dream"😊

Lee, you could go back via Santander to Southampton if you want a different route?
He already said that..
Santander to Portsmouth. We do not have any continental ferry services here in Southampton these days.
Did you use RFID for Shell. I used one as I was advise to when I used one on my very first fast charger. They charge monthly. Thankfully it was small amounts as I had forgotten about them. If you have the Shell app the details will be in there.
Breathalyser kits for France were scrapped in 2020. You do, however need 2 x warning triangles - to be placed at 50 & 100 metres behind the cars' breakdown point. 🤔🤗
BUT with the cost of the Taycan, I can buy a freaking load of petrol for the depreciation on it. A lot of petrol.
The Relationship Between Lithium and Cancer Proliferation
The relationship between lithium (Li) and cancer proliferation is a topic of ongoing research and debate. While some studies suggest that long-term use of lithium may be associated with an increased risk of certain cancers, others indicate potential anti-carcinogenic effects. The mechanism of action of lithium in cancer proliferation is complex and involves various pathways such as inhibition of glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β), modulation of redox status, inflammatory changes, pro-/anti-apoptotic mechanisms, and mitochondrial function alterations.
I would also add the link between RNA INJECTIONS and massive spikes in cancer rates.
You don't carry the batteries around in your pocket so as long as they are processed safely where is the concern. Uranium causes cancer ..
Well, I wasn't planning on eating a car battery!

Watching you too is like real top gear keep it up
Born to be wild.....steppenwolf.....
Talk about control!
So EVs only really work if you allow the car to monitor everything in real time!
No but as with many things, the optimum result is achieved by using the methods and services available. It's a choice.
If I'm on a roadtrip, sure I'm going to use satnav and routing. I'd do that in an ICE car too, the extra benefit is that the car will optimise itself, nothing to do with spooky control.
I'll often use satnav around town in any car, not because I don't know where I'm going but because it has a live view of the traffic situation and I'd prefer to have that than to join a road with no exit, only to come to a standstill due to traffic backed up and there are numerous routes here where that's every day depending on time of day.
I guess you don't realise just how many sensors are monitoring your ICE vehicle in real-time. MAF, DPF, ATS, Oil level, MAP, O2,NOX.....
Failure of just one will kill your cars journey. And fail they do. Replacement is typically £250 - £1000 a time. An EV has none of these. Oops. Your engine light is on again. You need to precondition your wallet 🤣🤣
Good luck Lee & Jeff enjoy your trip 😁👍
