    Lee, your feeling seasick even though the Channel was as calm as a mill pond reminded me of one member of our team of eight people when we went from Ramsgate to Dunkirk on a Sally Line ferry during my first trip to Romania in 1992 with humanitarian aid. Poor chap felt seasick as soon as we were on the ferry but still in port! He stayed on deck for the whole crossing while the other seven of us tucked into a nice meal which was free for one person from each of our four vans. My cross channel trips in more recent years have always been with Sea France and their food was very good.

    13:17, square plates…. This is where the term ‘a square meal’ comes from, the plates on ships are square shaped so that they don’t roll when stored stacked up on the edges.
    When joining the royal navy they were legally obliged to feed you the correct amount of food each day, the plates sizes were standardised so to ensure that you got your 3 squares a day.

    Enjoyed your video, I drive in France quite a bit and it is an absolute joy driving over there compared to clapped out UK. French toll roads are the best in the world, it's like driving on a snooker table, no congestion or roadworks, quality food/drink stops. Compare it to the UK where roads are always packed, poor quality road surface, service stations are an absolute disgrace with poor food at eye watering prices. When I drive in France I ask myself why can't we have nice things like the French have. UK has had its day unfortunately.

  • @st200ol

    Interesting to see everyone commenting that the charging is cheaper because French electricity is cheaper, it isn't its around the same price as here. The difference in France is the companies that run the chargers aren't allowed to mark it up 300% unlike in the UK.

    That's how I remember the French roads from decades ago when I used to drive south. Followed the road through Millau and Lodeve many times, before the bridge was built. I also preferred the French driving style, which would not tolerate lane hoggers. They come up behind flashing if you don't move back in after overtaking. Makes the slow ones behave better, so traffic moves more freely.

    If you suffer from no sea legs, I would avoid the Spain-Portsmouth Bay of Biscay ferry, as even though it likely be calm it’s 24 hours plus, I’ve done Bay of Biscay in severe gale 9 to storm force 10. I loved it, ferry rocking like mad, spray everywhere,dishes breaking, was an adventure, was also 10 hours late due to weather and engine out, only time ever felt sick at sea was on a Hydrofoil from Guernsey to St Malo, was weird motion but once outside was better.

    At last! You are on the right side of the road. Be reminded that two thirds of the planet is driving on the right side (including me). Each time I look at your cars, I can clearly see that they were designed for the right side and that they are only adapted for the wrong side (oups, I meant the left side). Best example: the bonnet/hood lever is often on your passenger side. This is a solid sign that your cars were designed for the right side. I would love however to drive on the wrong side just for fun…

    • @gimble447
      @gimble447 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The real most telling sign of where a car is designed is the indicator stalk, they are really meant to be operated by the free hand that doesn’t need the gear lever, ie left hand drive origin designs have the stalk to the left of the wheel, on right hand drive origin cars it’s to the right of the wheel, just look at any left hand drive Japanese car to see what I mean ;) bonnet releases are sometimes moved and sometimes not depending on manufacturer and also where original release location is ( bonnet releases under the steering column are usually moved over obviously but not so much if they are on the kick panel beside the “A” post) but no manufacturer makes two different “mirror image” sets of steering column switch gear 👍

    You may have got the ev fuel for half the price of the petrol but when you look at the cost difference of the 2 vehicles and the repair costs of the 2 vehicles and the resell value of the 2 vehicles, I would say the volvo is better value for money and gets you where you want to go quicker. The average person cannot afford an e.v. or all the hassle you get with it in the u.k. in my opinion.

      Have you visited recently? I was over at the end of March. Disregarding France because that looked as decayed before ww1, but in Belgium and Germany, there is no evidence of any recession at all. In the 4 years since I was last in Germany, it has only got even better... the UK is a third world country by comparison.

      @@billyskoda6839Yep, I visit all the big cities regularly in the UK and in the EU and people moan in the EU just as much if not more, especially about rising crime that's rising much faster than the UK in many of those locations among many other issues... And that's before we even get into the mass violent protests, blockades and demonstrations by the public as well across the EU, as well as the farmers going on the rampage right across the continent in the EU, which all make UK problems and protests look like picnics in comparison!

    Lee, I can remember back when the M5 / M6 (except around Brmingham) was nice like those French roads. Even the M4 had nice service stations; the one at Aust before the first Severn Bridge was great. The UK has just become grossly overpopulated for its infrastructure.

    1:17:00 You're omitting to tell us how much the motorway tolls are in France. In the UK there are only a few toll motorways. Using a French website I calculate you'll be paying about 36 euros in motorway tolls for the first leg of around 600km. Imagine those kinds of tolls in Britain. Many more drivers would just avoid toll sections, like I have programmed my TomTom to avoid the M6 toll.

    I think I'm more or less correct on this one.... France is around 2.2 bigger than the UK , with a marginal bigger population.
    That will make a big difference...... basically we are full up in Britain, especially England.
