The more I work through your channel Kevin the more I learn from each video. Even for a newb like me, if you want to put the attention in then these longer tech talks are rewarding and very worthwhile. I hope you keep them coming even if it means reiterating a lot of material several years down the line, to update us on any new developments and ideas or simply to keep bringing in more subs. 👍
First time I watched your video an I realized after watching you made this 2 years ago, thank you for still having it up you really have me a lot of infoe that I needed to know, thank You
Im new rider and my bike has been running lean and there seems no breakdowns vids like this i was able to tune my bike properly with this video, keep up the good work
Thanks Kevin! I'm a new subscriber and a very grateful student of this incredibly detailed insight to actual engine tuning. I've got a stock 2011 Heritage Softail 103 ci.(European version) and nearly bought an expensive TM with "autotune". Thanks to this vid, I'll be going with a "flash" tuning system.
Just saw this for the first time and it is excellent information and you are obviously a very good tuner. I have been using TTS for more than 10 years and I think I will continue to use it.
Excellent tutorial for me as a newbie who just purchased my first tuner. To keep the HD warranty intact, I went with the SEPST. Though I understand the EPA imposed limitations on my ability to change tables, as a retired engineer, I’m digging the ability to tune and refine the operation variables directly into the engines “brain” rather than relying on the canned starting base maps and the as-built tolerance factors 👍. Piggy-backing has its place, but I like the direct approach.
At 15 minutes you're talking about engine load and it's effect on tuning. That's why I like the FactoryPro EC997. Lock it in at 3000RPM, and tune at 10% throttle, 20%, etc. This simulates that load variable pretty well.
As usual another great video and info. Now the elephant, in the room. How does a person find a great tuner? What should the cost be for a thorough, competent tuner?
Kevin your knowledge on the intricate adjustments to get the best performance with longevity out of the motor is mind-blowing. But not to the degree of being overwhelmed with information because of the breakdown explanation you provide along with every scenario. THANK YOU so much for what you do and keeping it simple for us not educated enough in the finer workings of how our motors work more efficient. My question is about the TTS tuner my 15 limited has installed. Since its installation 7 or 8 yrs ago ive done different things to the motor. Such as adj. pushrods, Hyd. Lifters,by pass oil breather from air box to catch can. Is there a reason to take bike back to mechanic for another/different map on the TTS Tuner to make it more fine tuned? I don't know if it would improve the efficiency of the tuner or not and figured I'd ask. THANK YOU for Your time Sir, APPRECIATED!!!
Never got the last few minutes of the video lol Ok I got a s&s 110 big bore kit in my 2008 Fatboy Getting the heads and TB done What would you recommend for me Btw really love your videos brother I really thank you
An interesting and valuable tutorial this was. I am well aquainted with a world class tuner on Vancouver Island Canada and it boggles my mind how many riders want to spend money on their expensive purchase but cant be bothered with getting it tuned well. Their loss.
I've been looking for videos like this one, thank you. After loading a canned map and running a few auto tune sessions I'd like to be able to use the winPV software to fine tune my map but really have no idea where to begin
Very nice explanation of the two different H-D OEM FI systems. I was most disappointed to hear nothing about the after market EFI systems, most notably the Pegasus. Could you please do a video discussing the Pegasus? Thanks in advance, I will eagerly await it!
Stew and Mil started that company quite a few years ago. I think we met a couple times years ago but I dont think we would recognize each other in a crowd. In any event....I've worked with that system a handful of times but it's been quite a while. I have not had a single customer request their system in many, many years. Cool setup though especially for a custom bike.
Awesome Kevin nice to hear all this great info from someone that has no dog in the fight as far as trying to sell the next best tuner,,I could listen to this shix all day long,,,,Now open a shop in Wisconsin damn it,,,,:)
Thank you very much Paul. I appreciate your kind words! Glad it was helpful. If and when I do relocate, I'll be near Columbia, TN...of course, Madison isnt a bad city either ;)
Awesome topic Kevin! I'm glad you touched on the ECM replacements. I've looked at the differences (Alpha-N vs Speed Density) between them and have a couple of questions if you will. My '05 Softail has an OEM MAP sensor. Do the aftermarket ECUs utilize this sensor at all? That said, in an Alpha-N configuration and with the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) staying constant, wouldn't the drop in RPM indicate increased load? Granted, there is the availability of another "dimension" giving more precise control of timing and fuel when you include engine vacuum, but don't proper tunes account for this in an Alpha-N system? Lastly, as you increase in altitude, wouldn't the wide-band oxygen sensors allow the ECU to adjust for the thinner air to keep the AFR where you set it? So long as the system has a broad enough spectrum of adjustability to keep everything in tune, of course. Engines don't NEED to adjust to run richer or leaner at altitude, right? Meaning, would the optimum AFR at sea level also be the optimum AFR at 10,000 feet? Thanks again for the concise, thorough explanation of so many topics pertaining to our bikes. I'm a relative newcomer to H-Ds and your channel has helped me understand more about my bike. Sorry for the long-winded comment. I know you have more important things to do than humor someone on social media, but I've asked these questions for a while and would like your input or thoughts if you would like to share.
Hey Kevin. I stumbled across your your Tube Videos. Very informative so I'm a subscriber now. I had no idea about the different kinds of mapping .The only thing I knew was open and closed loop. I have a T-Max ECM on my 2019 Ultra Limited with the 131" Kit and different Cam and Exhaust. Unfortunately T-Max only had a Map for a 117" engine which they told me to use. I had detonation and starting problems with it. Seeing as I live in Daytona I went by their Display during Bike Week. When I asked about Automatic Detonation Timing retardation, they said that it is not programmed in their ECM's. Seeing as the 131" engines are so new, this was the first one they ran across. They did some re-mapping to my Unit several times and it seems to be much better. Now from your informative Videos I find out that Daytona TwinTec produces an ECM that is Speed Density. I don't want to Dyno Tune every time I change Cams so that's why I prefer the ECM's. You seem to bend towards the Daytona TwinTec ECM. Plus they are right in my area should I have any problems. I don't know if I should pull this Unit out and sell it and buy a Daytona TwinTec ECM.
Just tuned my bike with a Maximus pro tuner. Very impressed with the results! Low to mid range is much more punchy? Just need to do a final run and put more fuel in at the top end. Im hitting 100 easily now, as i wasn't before? Ive got a Switchback 103 with stock pipes. Couldn't get above 95mph so hoping to hit the 110 club very soon?
Hi Kevin. Just noticed in the comments two people where asking about the SE tuners one for the street and the other for the pro. You gave them two totally different advice. The street one you said go get another tuner and the pro guy you said get a downloadable file to record his data then make his changes with his SE Pro. I have the SE Pro Street tuner that has the capability already built in that can record data then use that data in the downloadable SE tuner file (from H-D’s website) to rewrite some charts to then download back into my bike. I bought this tuner because I bought the extended warranty on my 2019 FLHT. My question is do I need to go with another tuner when I get ready to void my existing warranty? I heard😆 that I could manually change some of the charts but others I couldn’t because of the EPA standards.
The street tuner does not allow the level of custom tuning as you stated...due to EPA restrictions. Yes you can data log, but...making desired changes is another story.
Can you please do a video adjusting AFF showing decel , throttle advanced , start ect? How and where to start . Man this was a fascinating video. I was a jet engine mechanic 30 years trimmed a lot of engines this was great and Thank you.
All your vids good stuff. Wish you could figure out how to do them in more basic under 10 minute vids with further details & the more advanced continuations in part 2s.
Me too. Lol. I could chop them up I guess, but I have found viewers tend to watch the first part, not the second, and much info is lost. Please share any suggestions you have on how I could do it. I'm putting it out there for you guys anyway.
Amazing tutorial, lot of answers to critical terms. Now going back to study and try to fully understand tables on the map that I currently run on my 06 Fxdbi open loop. (bought it brand new ) Any particular tip or item to look into, I got the SERT since 2007 -no big mods- just SE Ii and KN high flow air filter, but I'm getting older so as she, and lately she feels too hot. Again thanks for those 40 plus minutes of knowledge.
Kevin, love yer videos man. I have a 2019 Electra Glide Standard on which I did a full S&S camchest upgrade, with a Redshift 468 cam, de-catted stock headers, and a big sucker air filter. My question to you is if I have a power vision with stock narrowband sensors, will the “auto tune” option on the power vision be able to adjust the AFR to stoichimetric ratio and enable it to run correctly? Or will I need to add the “target tune” with wideband sensors to get it dialed in?
So if I understand you well, I have flashed my bike with a powervision tune (speed density) and I also installed their Target Tune (it's not replacing the whole ECM but it's a wide band closed loop system) module with wide band O2 sensors to target the AFR dynojet set in my AFR table, I don't really need to dyno my bike as the wide band sensors are always communicating with the ECM? Do I have to run some autotune sessions to optimize the VE and the advance spark?
You are correct...but with some stips. As long as you are confident that the AFR command is proper for the bike, as well as ignition tables, then no dyno required. Many only utilize a dyno to dial in VE tables anyway. And the in pipe sensor method is more accurate so youre better off. Yes you should run some auto tune sessions to make sure you arent out of range for the auto corrections.
Thank you for the great tutorial. I am looking to purchase a Vance & Hines Fuelpak FP3 for my 2011 Dyna Wide Glide. From what I have seen it should be a great addition to my bike. The alternative is a Screaming Eagle flash tuner which should work well too but requires a laptop etc. I am not the original owner of my bike, so I do not know if anything internally has been done, but a Stage 1 upgrade is in place with Python straight pipes, and a high air flow intake. I like the idea of flash programming. I program microcontrollers and write custom firmware as part of my job. I'd love to mess with custom maps for my bike :)
You're welcome. I would highly recommend a PV3 or Power Vision instead. Will allow for quite a bit more custom tuning, especially if you decide to do more Performance work later. If you decide to go that route, give us a call. I can set up a custom map in it for you before I ship it out.
Loved the video on tuning. Just wanted to know if you see any benefits to the autotune that systems have. I know it will not set up afr for cruise speeds, wide open throttle or make decisions for you. But is there any benefits to using the autotune features at all? Does it fix or get anything right?
It has value yes, but I have a unique perspective I guess. The further off from a good tune the base map is, auto tune has more value BUT...the harder the system will have to work to maintain tune and could possibly create inconsistent running conditions. If a bike is very well tuned, there is no need for adding auto tune. Stock ECM uses sensor data to modify fuel delivery based on atmospheric changes. In some cases, depending on the build and the exhaust choice, auto tune can be a bad thing as well...false lean conditions, reversion, etc.
I bought a 06 fatboy last summer. Seems to be well cared for but couldn't talk to the previous owner due to his passing . His son didn't know anything about it and was simply wasn't into motorcycles. Bike seems to run very well the son gave me a case of Syn3 oil. Heard it's not the best oil but price was right. Bike has V&H 2into2 exhaust air breather looks like Ness big sucker ? I'm wondering if I need to go out and get a tuner . Like I said it's seems to run pretty swell. It's just an 88 I've put the screamin eagle cam chest end hydraulic chain tensioners with oil pump.
Long story short. I have a flashed tune from Dynajet, power vision 3. Does it do any good to run the bike thru auto tune program? Of course the bike has the stock Harley narrow band oxygen sensors.
Great video, wished I’d seen this before buying the V&H FP3 after replacing my pipes with Samson true duals. I’m now purchasing the power commander and having it dyno tuned professionally. Screaming eagle super tuners and V&H FP3 are only any good if you are doing simple upgrades like replacing end cans or installing a high flow filter. If you replace your entire exhaust system plus have a stage 3 high compression cylinders, forget canned maps, they don’t work.
Yes...and no...depending on the system but for the most part, in simplistic terms, they take the command afr, look at actual afr, and along with input from other sensors, apply a block learn multiplier or correction factor to achieve desired afr.
Hey Kevin, great info, thank you. Question for you if I add a high flow air breather (S&S super) and decat my 2016 roadking stock head pipe and keep my stock muffers, should I do a tune?
What a great video and thank you very much. I got what you were saying about tuning but what I have is 2020 Street Bob that i Like to keep warranty which means I only have 1 option. I thought about well i can just switch out , lets say, dynojet tuner but I know GM and Ford will also look at dates and notice gap and flag your vehicle. I haven;t fully decided on the parts but have idea. S&S 50 state slip ons ( i can remove or install db reduces to be quiet). the new screaming eagle heavy breather and maybe screaming eagle power cam. I might go with the Hacker exhaust I really like the look and doesn't seem obnoxiously loud like most 2 into 1s. My question is will the screaming eagle tuner with pro tuner get me close enough. so it adds some power but most importantly run correctly and not have problem
youre welcome. truth is sir, if you flash it with anything other than the Street Tuner....it will flag it. the only way id say that tuner would get you close enough, is if you used all components as prescribed in the base map supplied....eg all SE parts. Yeah....sucks.
@@KevinBaxter thank you for quick response. I guess I pretty must figured this would be case. Like you said even same bike could need different tune, I guess I was hoping similar mufflers but different might not be a huge deal. not that the screaming eagle mufflers are bad just they don't look much different than stock ones
Kevin, the fuel injectors you mentioned are sold by choice option of gm/sec, starting at 3.9 all the way to 10.6. How to choose for a stock motor for example? Is it best to use the same size as factory, or go one size larger? Does Harley provide factory injector info in their workshop manuals or is the owner left to guess stock injector output?
Question - I have a 2017 RK standard. I am at stage 1 with slip ons and screaming eagle protuner. I Want to to put in a cam, probably a redshift 473. my mechanic really pushes the thundermax tuner. what i don't want to do is over buy a tuner-meaning buy one that does more than I really need to do. my bike is a daily commuter year around. the SE pro tuner sucks, I know that, but I am still under a warranty. where should I go from here when I do a cam? thundermax is expensive, but is it more tuner than I need? great video and probably provided more questions for me personally than answers :) but it was very informative . Thanks for your time and any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Good question. Do you have the SE Pro Super Tuner or the SE Street Tuner? Because of the year model, I'm guessing it's the newer "street" version. If that's the case, you are correct...that is a watered down system that definitely will not allow you to get the most out of the engine. If your bike were here, considering all you said, I would recommend a tuning license and I would tune it with a Power Vision. That would save you quite a bit of money and the end result would be great. If your shop isn't comfortable (or isn't familiar) with using Power Vision or something similar, the end result may not be as good as it could be. While i agree with you that a TMax is more than you need, if they understand that system better, it may be your better option. If skilled in both, the end result should be the same regardless of which tuner is used. Good luck! Be sure to subscribe too...i'll have more videos on this topic soon.
Hi Kevin, I want to thank you for uploading this video. You seem to really know what you're talking about and I'd like to get your opinion... I have a 2018 Harley Breakout with a Screaming Eagle Pro Street Tuner (came with the bike) I want to upgrade to either a Power Vision or FP3 since they both allow AFR to be changed. The only mods I have on my bike right now are an Arlen Ness big sucker and a VH big radius exhaust system. Which tuner would you recommend and why? Thanks in advance.
Youre welcome. I would recommend the PV3...the newest Power Vision over the Fuel Pack for many reasons. Mainly...you have more options and flexibility with the PV3 and it can grow with you should you do more later. It comes down to functionality and all the available tuning variables that come in the PV.
Hi Kevin-Screamin Eagle Race Tuner (SERT) 2009 black unit. 2008 FLSTC with Stage 1 upgrade (Vance & Hines Duals with Fish Tail tips with SE air cleaner with K&N filter). Have tried several times over the years to use the Smart tune option on the SERT to improve the various ECM parameters over the HD recommended Stage 1 base map (calibration ID 176AE106). Unfortunately when I integrate the recommended changes and reflash, the bike runs worse. What is your experience in using the Smart tune option on the SERT? (not used on a Dyno, multiple road runs were used to collect the data over various load and RPM conditions. Thanks for the great content!
I'm new to tuning and want to learn more on how to use the tts but I'm thinking pre made maps by the company seems easier and less racking of the brain
In conjunction with the Power Vision or PV3 of course, good product. It's basically analyzing AFR and "injecting" it into the correction tables. If your command AFR is proper, it will dial it in.
@@KevinBaxter Thanks for the response. BTW awesome channel. Too many people that think they know something. Nice to find someone who really does. I was trying to see if it would be a good investment to go along with my Power Vision and my Stage 2 ( cams) upgrade.
Thank you for the kind words and the sub. It's not a bad idea at all (and almost a must have) if you plan on doing it yourself or don't have access to tools that will allow you to confirm AFR. Also, we are a distributor for pretty much every company in the MC business. If you'd like to order from us, you certainly can and we'd appreciate it.
I got flhx 2017 with a stage 4 on it but I plan to put a 7.1 GPS injector and a red shift 468 plus a Thundercats. What do you think? I got a basani rage road 2
I didn't see where you have done any videos on carburetors so I'll make my comments here. I'm gonna swap my 74" shovelhead for a 93" S&S engine. I'm not sure about giving the S&S "E" that comes with it a chance or go to what has worked best for me, a HSR 42mm Mikuni. I'm also looking at a Lectron carb, which is a very interesting carb, but quite pricey to try out as an experiment. What do you think about the S&S "E" vs the Mikuni HSR 42mm? Have you tried the Lectron? Any opinions on the Lectron? Better than either the S&S or Mikuni or not worth the $800?
Great video...lots of great info...I unfortunately have one of those 3 button systems that shall not be named and I soon found how much of a PITA it is to get a decent map that runs good...I've been thinking of getting a better system...I'm really just looking to get the bike running properly...its an 06 flhxi with a big sucker intake, true dual conversion, and stock slip ons (for now)...I dont really plan on doing any other modifications and I'm not trying to get huge power gains...any recommendations on a direction I might want to head in would be greatly appreciated...thanks
thats a fairly straightforward list of mods. I would hope with a power vision, tts, or similar, someone could get you dialed in pretty good. I could send you a power vision preloaded with a map that would be very very close to what you have there if youd like to call the shop tomorrow 6782269651.
Kevin, I have a: 2013 harley FLSTC w 103 Stage 1; SE slip-ons and Synthetic AC Using 93 octane w 10% ethanol I have the SE super tuner pro. Installed map had the Stoiciometric at 14.6, and the tables were anywhere from 14.1 - 15.1. I adjusted the Stoic to 14.1 and the tables are now 12.9 to 13.8. Of course, this is out of the effective range of the NB O2 sensors, and the tables don't show anything in the closed-loop operation. Also: the plugs show that I am not too lean or rich, and could actually add more fuel. I have made other adjustments, but not relative to this question. My question: Should I install wide band o2 sensors, if so, what hardware would be needed and are they compatible with my stock ECM and Super Pro Race tuner? Thank you Peter
Wideband sensors are not compatible with your stock ECM...it doesnt know what to do with them. I have a video coming up this weekend on the truth about tuning...dynos, etc....before you do anything, i would watch that video.
My 97 with MM fuel injection seems to be running rich. Is there a way to adjust this? Also my plugs are carbon fouled. I assume this is from the bike running rich.
I have and 2006 Roadking originally with a stage one from the dealer with the SE Race tuner, I had a S&S 106 stroker in it with 510 gear cams, would I benefit from a newer tuner like Power Commander etc...
@@KevinBaxter EC997a is a dynotune process that Cycle Tune of Clovis Ca and a few other tuners that want total precision from their tuners use. I understand it is not inexpensive equipment but you can Google it. That is the route I took.
So is it better to tune with speed density or alpha n? Why would one replace their stock computer which is speed density with Thundermax which is alpha n?
I have a 2003 Harley Ultra Classic 1450cc with the Screaming Eagle twin engines. Also have after market mufflers installed. What tuner do you recommend?
Hello Mr.Baxter, I just got my 19RGS Dyno tuned and it seems at low rpms 1500-2500 it is starving for gas and wants to stall. I have a Pro screaming eagle tuner and was wondering if I do the run mode and work on the ECM will that help me at lower RPMs or do I need to do something else? Oh I forgot to mention I have a stage 2 on it (full Reinhard exhaust, screaming eagle air filter and an s&s 475 cam)
I got a 2003 heritage softail with stage two. Had intake exhaust and a cam what do you recommend to tune it? Would auto tune work well? I also have a power vision pv 1b.
For Someone trying to keep their Harley Warranty Screamin Eagle seems to be the option. That been said I like the possibility of see the bike sensor readings (AFR and Temps mainly) while in stop and go traffic like I used to with a V&H FP3. Any option out there for both things? Could I use the SE tuner to flash the ECM and then hook a V&H for reading on the go purposes no for tunning? Without marriying to the ecm
Hi Kevin... As you know by now, I have an (04), Heritage Softail, with the 88ci engine, and it is fuel injected. I feel that the engine is always idling too fast. Is there a way to just turn down the RPMs at idle, without having to mess with the turner? Is RPMs at idle, still controlled by the tuner so that you must go through the tuner? I think it would help improve both my "find neutral," and "shifting to first," when at a dead stop. Neutral is sometimes hard to get at startup, because the trans oil is cool and thick. Then shifting into first from neutral, causes gear slap and grind, before gear meshing. I'm going to change my oil leaking clutch cable, and do an adjustment on the clutch, at the primary side. "Yup," I'm gonna do that, just like you showed me in a video on that subject! "Thanks!" As for auto tuning and 'maps...' it seems a little obvious that someone creating a map, say... In the hot desert of Arizona, may not be the right map for someone like myself, living in VA, where I go from 0' MSL to maybe 2500' MSL and often am in humidity that ranges from maybe 10% to a gazillion% !
ECM controls the Idle. The IAC in fact. for a TC to circulate oil properly, they really need to idle around 950 to 1000. It's healthy. Not sure where yours is. If the ecm cant maintain that, you either have an intake leak, bad or dirty iac, tps problem, etc. Maybe take a look at that clutch adjustment as well. If you cant find N...it has nothing to do with IDLE rpm really. As for the maps...you are dead nuts on correct.
but wouldnt the stock ECM still compensate for the load. the piggyback unit only adds or removes a percentage of fuel from what the stock unit is delivering. It doest eliminate the map sensors
Get a fuel air ratio guage that have their own O2 sensor to monitor your intake charge if it is tooblean toovrivh and or just write ..check out sunit racing , speedway the oldest speed shop ...Jeggs and J&B cycle for a handle bar gauge Mount ..don't let your bike run with high numbers above 14.7 to 1
I have a 2019 street gide screaming eagle air cleaner and vance and hines shash cut. Im looking at a vance and hines fp3, or a maximus but im not huge on doing computer work. My bike i have it parked it seems to be running lean. What would be the best to go with im not trying to make this a track bike just a strong bike that runs smooth can u help. I can get a fp3 for 329, maximus for 279 and I just want something to add fuel to smooth my bike out thanks
If that is all youre planning to do to the bike, an FP3 would be just fine. If you were doing internal engine work, I would recommend something else with more robust tuning options. It's not complex to use so it sounds like it would be a good fit for you. If you like, give us a call and we can get one sent out to you for that price. 6782269651.
Thats what I did i put some ngk iridium plugs in and did the self learn on the fp3 with the pipes and screaming eagle its pulls easy from 45 to 125 thats all I need thank for the response great choice worth every penny just tell ppl if the unhook the battery from the bike like i did installing my J and w amp you will need to re-download the programed map u had
So many tuners, I have 2020 RG 107 with Jackpot 2-1-2 head pipe, comp cam 307-103-9 with air cleaner and open mufflers should I go to wide band sensors or stay with stock and a tuner that will satisfy this combination.
Great video! I have a SE PRO Tuner (not street) for my 09 103" TC stage 4. I have never attempted to look into the tune. "Race" tune originally flashed by the dealer at the time of the modifications. I am now getting some pinging under load at 25%-50% throttle and its driving me nuts. Can I fix this with the flash tuner I have (SE PRO), or should I invest in a ThunderMax or other wideband capable tuner?
Good question. There is absolutely no need for you to buy another tuner. The fix is actually quite simple and you can do it yourself. Use your software to activate the recording feature of your race tuner. Free download...just google it. While recording, reproduce the condition. Then look at the recorded data file. It will log all parameters including rpm, map, and knock activity. Then, go to your ignition timing table, in the rpm and map area you had knock activity, retard timing equal to the knock activity plus 3 to 5 degrees. Then, taper it off in the cells around it. Your problem will be solved.
@@KevinBaxter awesome. thanks Kevin. I am consuming all your content lately. great stuff, very thorough. I hope to get you to work on one of my bikes one day. Also- I will be contacting you for parts when needed from here on. Thanks again!
There are many different flow rates for the Daytona twin tec injectors. How do I know which ones I need. 103 with MR103 cam, Vance and Hines exhaust, S&S air cleaner. Using the super tuner pro. I have not installed wide and O2 sensors yet, but next thing to do.
My question is on tuners. I bought a used 16 street glide 103ci. and the previous owner did a major overhaul on the motor from bottom to top. After 2 months of owning this bike I snapped a valve spring. At idle. The bike shut down when I put bike into gear. After further investigation by my local H-D dealer and there master mechanic. For what I was going to repair damaged parts on the damaged top end for a few more bucks the master mechanic thought it would be better to put in the 110ci top end tire shredder kit. My lower end has S&S 585 cams with a dark horse welded crank Etc. the master mechanic said my lower end would marry the new 110 slip on tire shredder kit. My question is this bike has a FP3 fuel pack. And is quit overwhelming for and guy who knows nothing about tuning let alone autotune for optimal running capabilities. So with this new setup, would a power vision work best and give me my best optimal running capability? This will be just the license version from my dealer only. Hope this makes sense and thanks fir any info.
I know this is old but I’ll try. Have a 2018 road king special with cobra NH slip ons. No other mods yet and will prob only ever do a high flow A/C. So if caned maps are junk then what do I do with a flash tuner? Power vision or fp3? What should I do with those if canes maps are crap. Do you recommend a canes map then use the auto tune feature? It’s just confusing cuz you said auto tune doesn’t exist?
I would agree to an extent. Carbs are far more forgiving and easier to tune with even a limited knowledge of basic "tune while ride" techniques and reading spark plugs. Carbs were also less likely to do damage from lean conditions because the engine would always pull fuel thru it. And if too rich or lean, it is more obvious there is an issue. With EFI, it takes far more skill and knowledge to get it right. One can be running very lean or very rich, enough to do significant engine damage, and the average rider would never feel it. Because of that, I would never trust a generic canned map on anything more than pipes and a high flow. Even then, its questionable. Thanks for your sub and comments. They are appreciated.
Please an answer on this, power vision with target tune wide band o2 system (speed density) or thunder max (alpha n) for a 2022 low rider s with full 2-1 exhaust and possibly a cam? Which one and why? Or just dyno tune and be done with it?
New to your channel, great videos, if the injectors and such vary up to 15 20% My question is,how much can a factory calibration on the new HD compensate on changes (pipes,de cat and so on)? Thanks
Thanks for subscribing. Great question. Keep in mind that the factory calibrations and factory download calibrations must meet EPA compliance which doesnt maximize potential performance or the coolest running engine. Closed loop operation on narrow band sensors only functions at and around an afr of 14.69 or 14.3 depending on model. It can only correct a few percentage points. Removing a cat, and free flowing exhaust and air cleaner changes AFR in most cases, well beyond that. If it's already a bit lean unmodified, it will be very lean without custom tuning. In some cases, only installing slip ons would be acceptable however, do anything else, a custom tune is pretty much required.
good morning i have 2018 RG i put in a 468 cam & Thunder max & bassani header pipe do you think i should install larger injections & a dark horse compensator
hi kevin - i just had a dyno tune done at the HD dealership with the power vision tuner (on a 19' softail slim SE stage 3 114). after getting the bike back i've discovered a very noticeable delay / dead spot in the first 5% of the throttle. when taking off from 1st it will almost stall out. Any ideas?
My dealer mapped my SE Pro orange tuner purchased with my new 2010 Heritage. After cam change, air box and exhaust, the engine has always cranked differently than any other bike I have had. When you hit the on button, the pump does its loading the cylinders, and you hit the starter button, the engine seems like it if firing before TDC. So the engine does not turn over more than a revolution and it fires and runs. Is this normal or is the timing off. Will this hurt the engine in then long run. My dealer also keeps pushing the dyne tune. He say it will never run at it's best without putting it on the dyne. I am not looking for race power but I do want my bike to run its best without damaging the engine.
Hey Kevin Question, I have a 2016 street glide special, put a jack pot header 2-1-2 with Khome works slipons and screaming eagle heavy breather and power vision tune, took my bike to harley to have it installed and what not after they tuned it I picked up the bike got 3 blocks and pulled up to a stoplight and I have a loud knock in the intake, they want to charge me to look at it have you ran into this issue with the knock?
Thank you for your reply. Is the Pegasus an Alpha-N or a Speed-Density system? I have it installed onto a ‘91 FXDB Dyna Sturgis. My only complaint thus far is that the tuning software was written for Win 98 or Win 2000, which makes it very difficult to work with nowadays.
If stock Harleys use narrow band oxygen sensors will a flash unit allow you to leave the 14.3 range AFR, or is it necesarry to fit wide range ox sensors to adjust outside the normal parameters?
@Persistent Predator Thanks P. Predator. I'm just thinking the narrow band 02 sensor would compromise a wider band, flash tune programming insofar that these are a vital part of parameter readings read by the stock Harley unit. I'm not saying you're wrong. Powermax provides wide band 02 sensors that must be fitted for it to function properly. Why do that if the stock NBO2S can "guess" what the pmax control is trying to do outside the NB range? I plan on fitting the PV3 flash unit this winter. My otherwise stock 2011 103ci bike has Miller exhaust cans. This tame modification causes obnoxious deacceleration popping throughout the rpm range. It also runs hot at idle. I have two targets; 1) flash a program to eliminate the popping. 2) possibly lower engine idle speed to 600 to 700 rpm and slighty richen idle mixture for cooler running. I don't want to flash the EFI box if it gets confused by the narrow band 02 sensors...not sure what to think really.
hello there i am curios, i bought my 2007 utlra classic and it came with a tts tuner. i want to add on slip ons and larger air intake to start. can i utilize this tuner or is it safer to stay with the screamin eagle tuner? or does it matter which one that i use? there is no warranty on this bike it had a 30 day warranty that has already been utilized to fix oil leaks now all gaskets all the way down to the main seal between the two halves. so now that the 30 day warranty is up does it matter which tuner that i use? is one better to be utilized on a CVO model?
ahhh thats a multifit deal or an older one. i would remove positap, peel back a little insulation, tab of solder, then waterproof tape it. keep it corroding.
No sir. Not aware of any that will allow multiple bike use unless you pay for a license or for a multi use device. Power Vision, TTS Mastertune both allow for that.
I really enjoy the way you can take your extensive understanding of these systems and explain them in a way that makes sense. Thanks for the video!
Great lecture on tuning! Very helpful information. Please add a lecture that includes looking at maps and what the values and patterns mean. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Look for an app call MyTune. I haven't used it but looks interesting.
Great video to introduce me to the fundamentals of fuel injection and tuning.
Thank you for your time.
Thanks Clinton.
Wow! Finally, a concise guide which answers questions I have been asking for 2 days! Thanks so much!
Thanks for following and for the kind words. Please subscribe and check out other videos as well...try to keep folks informed.
At 15 minutes you're talking about engine load and it's effect on tuning. That's why I like the FactoryPro EC997. Lock it in at 3000RPM, and tune at 10% throttle, 20%, etc. This simulates that load variable pretty well.
GREAT VID. REALLY LEARNED ALOT . THANX FOR THE INFO. YOU MAKE IT EASIER TO UNDERSTAND IN UR EXPLANATIONS
Not for what you have listed...otherwise download the TTS manuals and figure out how to do it yourself...its all there
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I appreciate it.
Never got the last few minutes of the video lol
Ok I got a s&s 110 big bore kit in my 2008 Fatboy
Getting the heads and TB done
What would you recommend for me
Btw really love your videos brother
I really thank you
An interesting and valuable tutorial this was.
I am well aquainted with a world class tuner on Vancouver Island Canada and it boggles my mind how many riders want to spend money on their expensive purchase but cant be bothered with getting it tuned well.
Their loss.
Hi Thomas, who is your recommendation from Vancouver Island? I would love to talk with someone who actually knows how to tune around here. Thanks
thank you for sharing your experience in the field of tuning
My pleasure! Thanks for subscribing.
Thank you! It's a great explanation of many aspects about tuning that i didn't understand before. Congrats for this video!!
I've been looking for videos like this one, thank you. After loading a canned map and running a few auto tune sessions I'd like to be able to use the winPV software to fine tune my map but really have no idea where to begin
Thanks Kevin, really help me a lot for tuning the v-twin engines.
@@KevinBaxter Too many liberals. College town and state government with too many unelected bureaucrats.
They don't have an ECM for M8 just yet...not sure when they will. ign timing is critical....so keep working at it.
Couldn't get above 95mph so hoping to hit the 110 club very soon?
thats a great system as well. use them often.
Thanks for the great info!! Cleared up allot of the questions I have. Great Video
Can you please do a video adjusting AFF showing decel , throttle advanced , start ect? How and where to start . Man this was a fascinating video. I was a jet engine mechanic 30 years trimmed a lot of engines this was great and Thank you.
Great suggestion!
Thank you sir. Nothing wrong with the SERT. You may have something wrong causing the heat like intake seals, etc. Even engine wear.
This guy knows his shit!! awesome 😎 vid!
What are you currently using for a tune now? Powervision only adjust VE tables, you can manually set AFR in the tune to fit your riding style.
Love all your videos!!! I don’t know how the dislike button was hit.. my bad Kevin lol .. thanks again for all your info.
Do you consider piggybacks to help with lean running bikes Mr Baxter ? Thank you for your time .
Explained very well and easier to wrap my head around it. Thanks
Great video Kevin, so ecm replacement system isn't a block and learn system?
Yes...and no...depending on the system but for the most part, in simplistic terms, they take the command afr, look at actual afr, and along with input from other sensors, apply a block learn multiplier or correction factor to achieve desired afr.
How about those of us who live in countries where no dyno is available? Will a canned map from a vendor website do? Great video btw!
Very informative video. Have so many question on tuner cams and dyno. Looking for a great tuner/mechanic. I'm in Michigan. Have any suggestions??
Kevin, the fuel injectors you mentioned are sold by choice option of gm/sec, starting at 3.9 all the way to 10.6.
How to choose for a stock motor for example? Is it best to use the same size as factory, or go one size larger? Does Harley provide factory injector info in their workshop manuals or is the owner left to guess stock injector output?
Great Great great information! Thanks Brother
@@KevinBaxter thank you so much for the quick and thorough response. I've been binge watching your videos while in "captivity" :)
Good information thanks. What are you thoughts on products like Dynojet Target Tune?
Thanks for the basics .
Awesome breakdown. Thanks!
I havent yet...but that's on the ever growing list as well. Thanks for watching!
How do you feel about Fi2000 PowrPro Tuner which advertises that it adjusts A/F 80x a sec? Sounds like heaven on paper. What's the downside?
Kevin,
I have a:
2013 harley FLSTC w 103
Stage 1; SE slip-ons and Synthetic AC
Using 93 octane w 10% ethanol
I have the SE super tuner pro.
Thank you
Peter
Not really. If your Race Tuner is in good hands, the bike can be tuned quite well with it.
Kevin, can you explain the difference between EC997a and Dynojet dynotunes and the pluses and minuses of each? Thanks, Mark
EC997a? Can you enlighten me on that?
@@KevinBaxter EC997a is a dynotune process that Cycle Tune of Clovis Ca and a few other tuners that want total precision from their tuners use. I understand it is not inexpensive equipment but you can Google it. That is the route I took.
It is much more accurate then Dynojet and you get real torque numbers rather then a Dynojet formula.
So is it better to tune with speed density or alpha n? Why would one replace their stock computer which is speed density with Thundermax which is alpha n?
Is there an advantage to replacing the narrow band 02 with wideband o2's in the bike?
I have a 2003 Harley Ultra Classic 1450cc with the Screaming Eagle twin engines. Also have after market mufflers installed. What tuner do you recommend?
Hello Mr.Baxter,
I just got my 19RGS Dyno tuned and it seems at low rpms 1500-2500 it is starving for gas and wants to stall.
What about the target tune for the power vision is this an add on/ piggy back or still. Flash
If you were to add water/methanol injection, how would you go about tuning?
"Thanks!"
As for auto tuning and 'maps...' it seems a little obvious that someone creating a map, say...
@@KevinBaxter It's idling pretty fast...
I'd just guess at 700+
950 plus is the sweet spot for a twin cam
but wouldnt the stock ECM still compensate for the load. the piggyback unit only adds or removes a percentage of fuel from what the stock unit is delivering. It doest eliminate the map sensors
the guy is selling something, you're on to him...
Now you scared me with the tune I made the other day
Get a fuel air ratio guage that have their own O2 sensor to monitor your intake charge if it is tooblean toovrivh and or just write ..check out sunit racing , speedway the oldest speed shop ...Jeggs and J&B cycle for a handle bar gauge Mount ..don't let your bike run with high numbers above 14.7 to 1
So these piggy back systems operate as alpha n even though the stock ecu is speed density?
So many tuners, I have 2020 RG 107 with Jackpot 2-1-2 head pipe, comp cam 307-103-9 with air cleaner and open mufflers should I go to wide band sensors or stay with stock and a tuner that will satisfy this combination.
if the bike is tuned very well....no need for wide band after the fact really.
I have not installed wide and O2 sensors yet, but next thing to do.
email me with max RPM and estimated HP. I can calculate it for you and get the injectors heading your way. will be back in the shop on Tuesday.
Do you have a video or something thwt can help me with understanding tucking in different elevations?
i dont but that's a great suggestion. thank you. ill add that to the list.
Great content thanks for sharing
What brand tuner you recommend for modified engine still touring?
The average canned map is still light years ahead of what the average person could achieve when we all relied on carbs.
Appreciate the knowledge!
You bet! thank you.
New to your channel, great videos, if the injectors and such vary up to 15 20%
My question is,how much can a factory calibration on the new HD compensate on changes (pipes,de cat and so on)?
Thanks for the input, one more question, is the factory ECM a block and learn system?
good morning i have 2018 RG i put in a 468 cam & Thunder max & bassani header pipe do you think i should install larger injections & a dark horse compensator
Love the Daytona twintech 👍 🇦🇺
hi kevin - i just had a dyno tune done at the HD dealership with the power vision tuner (on a 19' softail slim SE stage 3 114). after getting the bike back i've discovered a very noticeable delay / dead spot in the first 5% of the throttle. when taking off from 1st it will almost stall out. Any ideas?
Hi Kevin, I have a 2005 softail deluxe oem exhust headers , my question is how and can I add o2 sensors ? t.y.
Hey Kevin
Question, I have a 2016 street glide special, put a jack pot header 2-1-2 with Khome works slipons and screaming eagle heavy breather and power vision tune, took my bike to harley to have it installed and what not after they tuned it I picked up the bike got 3 blocks and pulled up to a stoplight and I have a loud knock in the intake, they want to charge me to look at it have you ran into this issue with the knock?
Thank you for your reply. Is the Pegasus an Alpha-N or a Speed-Density system? I have it installed onto a ‘91 FXDB Dyna Sturgis. My only complaint thus far is that the tuning software was written for Win 98 or Win 2000, which makes it very difficult to work with nowadays.
I believe its Alpha N but i cant say for sure. It has been a very long time. I may be wrong on that.
When changing tuners from piggyback/splice do you have to change wire harness? Probably cause you splice in to throttle position sensor.
depends. on most of the piggys, it's jumper or split connectors...no actual splicing. so unplug.
@@KevinBaxter I had to posi tap into it. Im sure you know the pc5 type of tuner im talking about. Wish I saw your video before deciding 🤦♂️
@@KevinBaxter and if so ill give you a call.
ahhh thats a multifit deal or an older one. i would remove positap, peel back a little insulation, tab of solder, then waterproof tape it. keep it corroding.
@@KevinBaxter exactly what I will do, called fuel moto about it... they said I dont have to get a new wire harness thankfully.
Any of this flash tuning systems can be used in several different bikes? Or they get married with the ECM like the HD street tuner?
No sir. Not aware of any that will allow multiple bike use unless you pay for a license or for a multi use device. Power Vision, TTS Mastertune both allow for that.
Thanks very helpful
