    Four music geeks. Three lost studio tapes by 1970s pop legends 10cc. One oven. What could possibly go wrong?
    In December 2020, four intrepid 10cc fans set out to unearth buried treasure. They have in their possession three mysterious studio tapes by this great and underrated 1970s band. This reflexive documentary tells the exciting story of how they restore these unique and rare tapes - by baking them in a food dehydrator! One tape in particular, purporting to be a TV advert for make-up giant Revlon, has never been heard outside Strawberry Studios in Stockport. The adventure ends in a vintage recording studio in Salford, near Manchester, where they'll attempt to play the tapes. But will their first steps into the dark art of tape baking be a total disaster?

    I worked for Lasky's in the Arndale Manchester. The four came in and was the lucky one to serve them. I sold them a Philips video recorder each, Graham asked for his to be delivered and installed. He was not home when I went to install it, he lived in what looked like a Swiss Chalet. His maid answered and showed me to the bedroom where it was to be installed. The carpets were all white and about 2" thick, his bed was bigger than my bedroom and there were gold discs on the walls. A memory I have treasured all my life. Wonderful group and amazing music, so much talent.

      @@smacreavy Let's face it ... this isn't just music history. It's not even just social history.
      This is actually archaeology, isn't it? The study of material remains of the industry of members of a culture group to enable us to complete the story of that culture group. That definition works at two levels: 1970s pop culture in the UK and 10cc themselves!

    When I was about 9 or 10 yrs old, my big sister took me with her to a place called “The Preview House” in Hollywood, CA. It was a testing theatre for various media such as, TV shows, feature films, commercials, music, etc. We would sit in an audience and watch or listen to whatever they played for us and with a small handheld unit, we would rate the experience. Sometimes throughout the playback and sometimes after. One time I distinctly remember the room going dark, and I heard a beat, then all of a sudden I was mesmerized by the sound that filled the theatre. It was an ethereal and enveloping chorale that excited my ears like never before. It was as if I was transported into my own mind, floating and wandering through a spatial abyss. It was wonderful. The song they were playing was “I’m not in love” by 10cc. My young self could hardly process the lyrics but the music had me fully, and happily entranced. Easily, my most memorable visit to the Preview House. That song also played a big part in my becoming a musician. By the way, I gave them an A rating.

    I just love this! I'm a 10cc super geek from childhood. Definitely agree with the others who say that this band is up there with the Beatles in creativity and pure warped pop genius. I finally got to see 10cc live in Belgium about 5 years ago. We had house-swapped in a little town called Eeklo, and it just so happened that they were the headline act at an annual music fest there. I was blown away, and overjoyed. Thanks for making this doc! And thanks to 10cc.

    What a treat to have stumbled on this and what a great story. I'll forever remember the huge sense of disappointment I experienced when, as a 16 year old kid late in 1976, I heard on the radio that Kevin and Lol had left 10CC. Even at that early age and having been a big 10CC fan since Rubber Bullets, I sensed they would be different going forward. When I finally got the chance to see them for the first time at Hammersmith Odeon (Deceptive Bends tour) in June, 1977 I was thrilled. If memory serves correctly, there were two circular screens, lowered from above the stage for the beginning of Feel The Benefit, against which was projected a faintly lit naked girl swimming underwater. I remember that because a few rows behind me a guy shouted out "you dirty "ol man" when that was shown. To my surprise, when I subsequently first heard the live album, there it was, immortalized forever. Still hard to fathom that Sheet Music has been on my record shelf for 50 years and I still love playing it.

      Dunno how many times I've watched this video now, and every time I do, I keep picking out likenesses between the Revlon music, and other 10cc tunes. For example, the backing vocal voicings on the D chord are very reminiscent of the backing vocals that bring in Art For Art's Sake, as are the various guitar picky bits in the intro and middle section of AFAS to the piano part in the Revlon music.
      I think it says that in 1976, the members of 10cc were definitely thinking about certain musical themes in their own and the band's music.

      @@smacreavy Btw Sean, re podcast 65, just to throw some more ambiguity and uncertainty into the backing vocal issue for you, I can definitely hear a high G on only the A, above Kevin's E, which would make that chord an A7. I'm fairly certain its not an overtone, because it seems to gently fade in on that chord, as though the person singing it only introduces it at that point. That note sung gentler, coupled with Eric's quieter part too, could that track have possibly been a bounce of two separate takes, Eric's part being a piece of one that was bounced in at a lower volume? Definitely very strange!

      Thanks! I just ordered our masks off the net - sent them a photo, and they arrived in the post. ;- ). Not good quality though. There are plenty of custom mask companies around...

    A true delight and beautifully told with humour , excitement and the trademark forensic qualities which i love. The inclusion of the two Mr Gs adds to the story and viewing pleasure as they did it and it is great to hear their memories or lack of them ! So Sean , Paul and Liam and everyone involved you all brought your own talents to this project and it all blended together wonderfully . As a 10cc fan since 1975 a big thank you for bringing this about , because it is important !

    In '70's all my pals had heavy, soul, punk etc and I chose 10cc,. Best thing I ever did was slow dance to INIL to my future gf and the rest of course is history. Thanks, loved this film and of course your 10cc book 👌

    Wow am a fan from 1st single to today. I remember seeing the melody maker front cover in the newspaper stand in piccadilly gardens with the news of the split in 1976. It broke my heart. Having seen them twice in manchesters fth just a few months prior where they were riding the crest of a wave prior to world success. Hearing this new recording is simply magic. Thanks to all involved. Youve made an old manc very happy indeed.

    Astonishing stuff! Re: why did they do it (Kevin's comment) - perhaps to get some brass to pay for Consequences and gizmo development! The band were the first headline act I ever saw live - Leeds University, 12 October 1974 (I was going to say first band, but the support act Vineyard take that spot). Love them to this day and have just bought Kevin's new album. Much love to everyone involved in this project. Congratulations!

    Great story and a good production. Back in the very early '70s, I was intrigued by 'Rubber Bullets' and later, 'I'm Not in Love' played out over Sydney Harbour during those balmy winter days of 1976. Ultimately, 'How Dare You' became my constant LP companion in my North Sydney terrace where a view of Luna Park across Lavender Bay could be yours for just $22/week. Those were the days! In about '83, 10cc toured Australia so I managed to snaffle an interview with both Eric and Graham in Newcastle just prior to their first concert. My Marantz Superscope cassette recording (one of the few items not stolen from a vehicle break-in during the Concert) eventually became the basis of a 'Sonics' magazine article plus a two hour radio programme I made for a local FM radio station later that year. Eric and I really hit it off in that interview, especially when we delved deeply into just which Neumann microphone they used to record his Levi zip for the 'How Dare You' track: 'Iceberg'. I wonder what has become of Eric as we rarely see him. Has he become a recluse? What an astounding, multi-talented artist he is.

    • @smacreavy
      @smacreavy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Craig, and I agree with all of your points! Eric has simply retired from music making...

    • @CraigMarshall_HDvideo4K
      @CraigMarshall_HDvideo4K 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@smacreavy Eric was very gracious during the interview as nearly all my questions were about Godley & Creme!! I do hope Eric has not become 'bitter & twisted' as some of us can and he is simply enjoying the fruits of his talent along with his family.
