Setting Up A Dirted Tank For An Oscar Cichlid

- I know, I know I’m sure I will hear plenty of “You can’t do that” and “There is no way that’s going to work” Well to that I say if you don’t attempt something you will never succeed at it. If I listened to what the internet says my entire fish room wouldn’t be possible with no filters and no air but it thrives, so why would this be any different? Only time will tell.
I would like to thank @Hygger-Aquarium for their continued support of my channel by donating their awesome heater to this build. I truly love this company and the new technology and ideas they bring to our hobby. I will leave links down below not only for the Amazon link for this heater but to Hyggers website and social medias as well so check them out.
Like I mention in the video I’m offering memberships to my channel and would love to see this part of my channel grow and can offer lots of perks including but not limited to members only videos, shout outs, and giveaways. So hit that join button and join me in thinking outside the box and stepping back into nature☀️🌻🍂 #fishroom #oscarfish #dirtedtank #noway

Cool video buddy! The egg crate makes total sense. This Oscar really is a grouch! 😆
Thanks Jay, definitely won’t hit that dirt layer with it. Just have to watch out for it being a turd and pulling out plants. Oscar the grouch … nice
Thanks for watching 😁👍
Sparkles is an awesome name!
Well at this rate it will be called Sparkles😂 Thanks for watching 😁👍
COME ON PEOPLE! Let's all vote to name him "Sparkles". Then Patty has to call him that in every video! 😂
Gil you are too much! Since you posted Sparkles twice does that count as 2 votes?? 😁
No cheating, Gil! 😋
@@TarasTankFriends Come on Your Highness, you want to heer Patty say Sparkles as much as I do!
@@Gilsfishroom 😂 right now Oscar the grouch is winning but because of you Gil now my daughter wants Sparkle to win 🤦🏻♂️😂😜
Sparkles perfect name
Sparkles oh my 😂😜
Awesome video Patty, I look forward to seeing the progress over the next year. Love the tank as well it’s great
Thank you, I’m hopeful it works out. Might be some challenges along the way but I will adapt. Thanks for watching 😁👍
I wouldn't have guessed an Oscar. I am looking forward to how the aquariums progresses with time.
Yes, I always loved Oscar’s and wanted to incorporate the dirted tank with it. Plus I like proving people wrong that things are possible that others say are not. But time will tell 😁👍
Have you thought of a name for him 🤔.
@@Aquarium_Fantasy-HF honestly no I was going leave it up to all you😁👍
Like you said. It's what to his or her attitude. Great video. Thanks for sharing
Thank you, I definitely think that will play a big role in it. But I’m hopeful. Thanks for watching 😁👍
Man this is what I love about you and your channel. Your willingness to try things no matter what others say. As far as a name I’m sorry Patty but I read the comments and have to go with Sparkles 🙃😆lol
Thank you I appreciate that. I love to challenge myself and try things others say aren’t possible. We will see how it works out.
Sparkles… really 😂 Ok 🤦🏻♂️
Sparkles is a great name
Chris and Gil are in trouble 😂😜 Sparkles lol
Great advice Patty on the “if you don’t try, you’ll never really know “
Thanks Mal, I’m a firm believer in doing what I want and learning from it good or bad. I never liked listening to teachers as a kid😂 preferred to figure things out myself and feel that thinking follows me into this hobby 😁 thanks for watching 😁👍
Interesting approach to the digging fish problem Patty! Another one that I will be following. I have a video coming up that I will be interested in having your opinion on regarding dirted tanks. Have a great week!
Yeah , I’m hopeful I can get it to work but time will tell as it gets older and gets moody😁 I most definitely look forward to it Eric!
Thanks for watching and have a great week yourself 😁👍
Oscar the grouch...Seriously like the way you integrated egg crate into the sand above the soil method, will have to give that a try.
Thank you, I thought it would be a great way to stop the Oscar from hitting that dirt layer. This could work for any digging cichlids to be honest.
Oscar the Grouch.. nice right now this name is in the lead. Sparkles is second 🤦🏻♂️😂
Thanks for watching 😁👍
I've never kept an Oscar, but I'd absolutely love to. I'm looking forward to seeing this progress.
Absolutely Keith, I’m sure I will have to adapt as it gets bigger but I’m hopeful I can make it work. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Your video popped up on my feed. I have 11 dirted aquariums and one is an 80 gallon Oscar tank. I even keep Axolotls in dirted aquariums too. I subscribed.
Very cool, glad to hear more is are doing this. Axolotls? Awesome, that’s my fall project, my daughter is obsessed with them and we want to get her (well me it will be in the fish room😁) one for her birthday and plan on it being dirted. Thanks for the sub and thanks for watching 😁👍
Ps I subbed to your channel as well 👊
i vote sparkles!! ✨✨
Sparkles 🤦🏻♂️😂 continuing the trend I see😜 Thanks for watching 😁👍
Father Fish says to put a flat rock somewhere in the tank. He says the reasons Oscars dig is because they’re looking for a flat surface to lay eggs on. If you have one for them they won’t need to dig.
Yes I did see that, I was planning on doing that soon . Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching 😁👍
Opinions are like A holes Patty we all have one lol, you do you mate and its going to be great to watch the progress on this journey, I really hope you pull it off in the long run. I am backing your daughter with Java
Thanks Paul, I’m really hopeful it works out just need to adapt to whatever the Oscar turns out to be … chill or psycho..
Java , I will put that down as a vote.
Thank you for watching my friend 😁👍
Sparkles
Sparkles everywhere 😂😜
Your Oscar is beautiful! 😍
Thank you Talisa! Thanks for watching 😁👍
Great video 😊 father fish did say U can have a planted tank with Larger fish if U start them off small Good luck. Detroit
Thank you, yes I did see that and that have always believed that myself. I’m hopeful it will work out. Thanks for watching 😁👍
It's a good idea and I think it will work .
Thank you, I’m hopeful as long it doesn’t wind up having a demon personality and rip everything up😂 Thanks for watching 😁👍
The tank looks nice! 🌿🙌🏻
Thank you, hopefully it stays that way and the Oscar doesn’t turn into a turd and rip stuff up 😂
Yes, hopefully! I love planted tanks so much, I don’t know if I could ever keep a fish that destroyed plants 🙊🌿
I bet anubias would be another great plant that he would have a hard time destroying, and if all else fails, you could just add a bunch of houseplants like monstera and peace lilies to the top, and still have plants filtering your tank!
@@TalisaAquarist I think it will be a learning curve as it gets bigger but truly believe with enough non stem plants it will thrive. I have Anubis I actually planned on putting in there soon have just been deciding between nana petite and barteri . I think this will be a good example of not being afraid to try things no matter how it turns out.
I am excited to watch and see how it goes! I love learning new things in this hobby, and I’m grateful for people like you that document the things you learn!
I would add some flat stones like some slate on sand so that Oscar’s have a flat hard surface to build a breeding spot
That’s not a bad idea. Thank you and thanks for watching 😁👍
Great video buddy! New member here!
Thank you Jesse! And thank you for joining 😁
Thanks for the support and watching my friend😁👍
cant wait to see how this goes over the next year or two.
I agree, I think there could be some challenges and learning curves but I will adapt.
@@pattys_aquatics I know you will brother.
New sub here and I vote to name the Oscar "Sparkle" 🥰🤗
Thanks for the sub and of course Sparkles 😂😜
Well sir I believe you have out done yourself. I would have never guessed an Oscar. The egg crate idea in the substrate is a brilliant idea. A far as lids I use polycarbonate panels cut to size lot cheaper than what the manufacturer wants. I have them on 5 of my tanks currently. Anyhow great video can't wait to see how it progresses. Call him Shaq
Thanks Scott, I wanted to do something different with the tank and love Oscar’s so I figured I would give it a try.
That’s actually the route I was thinking for the covers thanks.
Shaq… nice

This will be cool if you can pull it off mate. Have you considered giant val? Might stand up to a bored Oscar. I reckon Sparkles would be a good name.

@@pattys_aquatics My pleasure. Na thanks you for the sub as well. Thanks!
Awesome idea of the egg crate. That would probably work with large Goldfish looking for tender roots .
Lol I live by rob peter to pay paul ... Most of my tanks are done that way
I haven't had an Oscar in over 40 years
Zar!
It will be interesting if the stem plants don't get broken off as the roots aren't the best but that doesn't mean the ludwigia still won't thrive on top
Good on you marching to your own beat
Thanks Chris, as you know I like to try doing things others don’t think will work. There may be some learning curves with this along the way as it grows but I’m hopeful I can succeed at it.

@@pattys_aquatics well... Gil calls em as he sees en

I think Oscar 😊
😁 Oscar is winning
Also don't put another Oscar in or there will be a definite territory dispute which comes with digging. I think Oscar the Grouch or Sully would be good names LOL. I had an African Cichlid tank with mollies and spiny eels. It full of large lava rock with blue green algae all over the rocks. It had black sand and it was my most memorable tanks. The mollies survived but didn't grow in number, and the spiny eels came to the top and ate bloodworms out of my hand. The cichlids reproduced of course and it was an awesome tank even though everyone told me I couldn't keep those fish together.
Oh no I definitely wouldn’t put a second one in there.
Oscar the grouch and Sully . 👍 nice
That sounds like a very active cool tank. It’s definitely worth trying things others would say won’t work because if it does it could be awesome 😁Thanks for watching 😁👍
The Grouch
Nice, that’s the second vote for Grouch.
Thanks for watching 😁👍
I would love to see you buld the Oscar a 220 dirted tank and get a second Oscar. Then you can have Sparkles and Oscar the grouch 😁 looking forward to the update videos. My Oscar's destroyed their plants when they got to around 8 inches, deeper substrate, and a larger root system type plant likely would have curbed that a little for me. There are also some fairly large Cory's that could live with adult Oscar's as well as some plecos like Ranger Plecos, if you're looking for more than just the Oscar in the tank.
That would be an awesome build for sure Jeff and Sparkles is looking like the name so far.
I’m hoping the crypts and swords and dwarf sag will hold up. The stem plants is a toss up but they play their role now with the start up pulling nutrients out of the water column. As of now I don’t plan on putting anything else in there but if I do I definitely will keep those suggestions in mind. Thanks for watching Jeff😁👍
"Apple" because sometimes they're sweet, sometimes they're bitter, kind of like an Oscar 😅. Interesting experiment, clever with the egg crate. You sure are right that you don't know/learn unless you try. Will be looking forward to seeing how it goes, hope you have a great weekend! 🙂👍
Apple, nice! Better than Sparkles 😂 I love trying to accomplish things others say is not possible and this just another. I’m hopeful he doesn’t turn out to be a turd and rip all the plants up😁
Thanks for watching and have a great weekend yourself 😁👍
@@pattys_aquatics I had a betta I named Mr. Sparkles, it was a silly name, but silly is ok sometimes too 😂. I hope so! I've never heard of anyone successfully keeping an Oscar with anything but bolted down anubias, so it'll be really cool if your theory of raising him up with the plants works out! 🤞🙂
@@TarasTankFriends I’m hopeful , if not at least I tried. Are you changing your vote to Sparkles as well😂😜
@@pattys_aquatics no, I like apple, and I'm not falling for Gil's joke, lol. But I think you should name him whatever you want, he's your fish.
@@TarasTankFriends I told my daughter I would let everyone on here decide. I told her about Sparkle and she is rooting for that one now🤦🏻♂️ Thanks Gil 😂

@@pattys_aquatics late here but I will watch the video tomorrow!
In theory with enough plants the fish wont rip them up. He could nibble on them though.
I have a deep sanded fancy goldfish tank and the goldies leave the plants alone, unless its duck weed
Yeah that’s my hope. The stem plants are questionable long term but put lots of crypts and some swords and dwarf sag in which is my hope to be harder to rip out. Time will tell. Thanks for watching 😁👍
I was thinking about the plants as well, hopefully your theory is correct about him growing up so leaving it alone, i kinda doubt it but truly hope you prove me wrong on that :p
I think I will need the rooted plants to take over more like the crypts and swords . The stem plants might be hard but time will tell and that’s why I’m doing this. I like to challenge myself. Thanks for watching Gabriel😁👍
Oscar.

My current thought is my seachem prime killing all my good microbes
Huh, I rarely use any water conditioners and don’t have issues.
@@pattys_aquatics good video idea. How am I getting chlorine out of my tap water? Ty
@@ALvatar3 I don’t and don’t have an issue. There are other dechlorinators as well besides prime. I used Fritz complete the last few years when I do use it. I ran out a couple months ago and just stopped using any. Now every water municipal is different as far as what they use to treat the water from how I have seen various experiences from others over the years. Otherwise put water in 5 gallon buckets and let sit out for 24 hours and I believe that will also get it to be safe without using anything . Hope that helped.
@@pattys_aquatics last one and I’ll leave you alone but you’d do a 30% water change with tap water without treating water?
@@ALvatar3 yes, just did one this morning on my puffer tank. Not everyone can probably get away with and honestly I will get more eventually but it is possible depending on your water. But like I said if you don’t want to use any and be safe fill up a few 5 gallon buckets and let sit overnight and you will be good too
