Removing All Air From My Aquariums: Creating a Noiseless Fishroom

  • I’m going to attempt to not only turn off but fully remove all air stones and pumps from all of my aquariums. Why would I do this you might ask?
    Well that answer is because it has been my goal for a few years now. After finding ‪@LRBaquatics‬ and seeing his nature first approach to his tanks. For them to not only survive but thrive with no filters and air. So my goal is to try to blend the method of LRB along with everything I have learned from ‪@FatherFish‬ and create an ecosystem that not only has deep dirted substrate and a food web but no filters and no air so that everything within the aquariums depend on each other almost as if it were truly in nature.
    Will I succeed??? Have to watch to find out!!
    Also I will link the LRB and Father Fish TH-cam channels just incase your not subscribed to them already and if your not subscribed to me please consider doing so and join me in thinking outside the box and stepping back into nature🍃🍂☘️

      Thank you😁, Honestly you were the first TH-camr that went no filter no air with the size of fish house you had , that I seen and instantly intrigued me in the possibilities .
      I think people may think it’s crazy because it’s not the norm and something that was drilled into us that you’re not supposed to do. Some may think it’s crazy but that’s what inspires me to want to try it. It’s the same with Father Fish, both of you in my opinion are the pioneers of a natural, nature based fish keeping.
      So your not crazy, your helping open peoples minds to the possibilities in this hobby, including mine😁

    I'm on day two and the fish are loving it without the bubblers. It's crazy, I feel like I've been annoying them for months with screeching hugger air stones.. Anyway, all going well so far, happy Sunday from Ireland 👍

      That’s awesome, I think LRB mentioned once he thinks the fish would be happier without the constant humming of an air stone which makes lots of sense. Also theoretically the plants should grow much better too because the air stone will not push all the carbon out of the water column and the plants can consume more. I’m around 6 weeks in and have zero complaints so far. 😁👍

    Father Fish recommends water movement on larger systems as i recall for oxygen exchange and heat distribution. You have many smaller tanks so I don’t see how that will be a problem. I have found with flow, string algae was more problematic. Like you i wouldn’t eliminate the air on the 75 gallon. This is another video i will follow closely. i like your scientific approach to everything. it’s probably one of the main reasons i follow you,that and your unpretentious nature. Keep them coming 👍

    • @pattys_aquatics
      @pattys_aquatics  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you very much Ken, I use the wave maker in the 75 mainly for water movement to help prevent Cyanobacteria that has popped up a few times. I have been dealing with that and documenting it and believe I have it beat naturally without using meds but that being said I will definitely continue with the flow in this tank and maybe put it on a timer for sure though. The other tanks have been doing great so far and really think it will continue but only time will tell.
      Thank you very much for your support and input it is greatly appreciated 😁👍

    This is crazy man, I've been thinking about removing my air stones for the past month. 4 out of my 5 tanks have air, the tank in the kitchen without air(with canister filter) has no hair algae issues. This proves your findings, going to turn them off while closely monitoring the fish👍 happy Saturday!!

    • @pattys_aquatics
      @pattys_aquatics  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That’s awesome, in my tanks which you will see in future videos, that had the hair algae bad it had not grown back at all. It’s actually starting to look like it’s dying back. Now my issue is I have it in my 75 and have the wave maker going in it to help curtail Cyanobacteria. So I’m going to have to experiment in there with the wave maker on a timer I believe. There is a lot of hate towards Father Fish and to be honest I truly don’t get it. What he does is yes in my opinion a variation of Walstad and yes he likes to preach and states he is not a scientist and I can’t speak for anyone else nor would I but I have had a lot of success with it so far. To be fair though I don’t follow it completely to the tee but everyone has a right to their own opinion and I respect yours because I can tell from our comment conversations you are very science oriented and I find that helpful in these conversations.
      As far as updates so far everything is doing great in my fish room 6 weeks in but if you want to see more check out LRB Aquatics, he has been doing this on a large scale for some years now with great success.

      @@pattys_aquatics I do not have any hate towards father fish whatsoever. I do watch a few vids now and then. I am completely sure that no filter, no airation can be done. Actually I have a no filter, bare bottom tank running great. Accodring to me many fish is suffering and dieing to the let it go approach. Yes you can run an aquarium without filter and airation. But one really need to understand what is going on in the tank and take the correct measures if something goes wrong. The do nothing "understand nothing" approach is just wasting a lot of fish lifes and make potential hobbyists turn away from the hobby. I do think your experiment will succeed. All your tanks looks like they are ready. As said before, I am looking forward for updates preferably with data.😀👍

    Interesting, and you are braver than me, though your fish stocking is quite low. Glad the night time only aeration experiment proved successful. Aeration/surface agitation in the hours before the lights come on is however, often necessary especially if fish stocking is high, or CO2 injection is used. With CO2 injection during lights on, I must have at least one filter outlet directed at the surface of the water or I get distressed fish as oxygen levels fall against a backdrop of CO2 at around 15 ppm.
    Easy check, look for gasping at the surface before lights on, if fish gasp you need some surface agitation or some air stones.
    Excessive oxygen bonds with trace elements and makes them less accessible to plants, though Iron of course carries oxygen in the blood, this is not simple chemistry. Plants should benefit from the removal of air stones because trace elements should be more accessible (but I do not claim to fully understand the chemistry involved), and the fibrous elements of higher plants mean they require more carbon than algae, so higher CO2 levels with no aeration should benefit plants and they should thus reduce algae via competition for trace elements and light.
    It would have been useful to test CO2 levels when air stones were on 24 hours a day, when on for darkness only and now with no air stones. Tanks often settle better and are clearer in terms of mulm being in suspension with no aeration. A muddy pool clears via settlement. Oxygen levels are hard to measure but generally less than 4 ppm causes problems, though trout need higher levels around 6 ppm hence they live in colder fast flowing waters than say carp.
    Anyway Patty all good experimental stuff. Good luck.

      Always dropping the knowledge there William, love it. 😁
      Definitely hoping this will make the plants flourish and the tanks with algae disappear.
      That definitely would have been interesting checking the O2 levels before and after. But that would have entailed me buying something to do that.
      This definitely is not for everyone and every set up or style but think my style could thrive on this.

      Very true Chris 😂, honestly I had thought of air pumps on timers a couple years ago and asked the question on an actual good forum page and got nothing but hate. Then a viewer of mine , William, who commented on this video earlier gave me the insight of when the best time to do it was. Honestly if someone doesn’t want to cut the cord entirely from air things the way to do it. Still quiet during the day and pumps in not going when the lights are out.
      I’m very happy with how it’s going so far and yes that’s another huge benefit of the power goes out.
      My fish room isn’t a closed room. It’s part of my open basement but the furnace and water heater is right by it. Water temps in the winter get down to around 60-62 with no heater which is survivable for most of my species but the puffer wouldn’t like it and I don’t know if all my plants would either. I was trying to go more non heater fish( rainbow shiner, white clouds ,rice fish) for that fact as well.

      Basically in my perspective is to make my aquariums closer to nature. There are no air stones and air pumps in nature, plants make the oxygen and the point is to make the tank as natural as if it were in the wild. Plus the fish don’t have the stress of an air stone constantly making bubbles and having a vibration from the pump and it makes the fish room absolutely quiet. Hope that helps 😁👍
