Last August, after not having an aquarium for at least 40 years, I stumbled on the Father Fish channel and decided to give his method a try. It looked like a very easy way to keep fish, and I was pleasantly surprised. I love my aquarium and have only done a 10% water change twice since then and that is only because the chunk of wood I put in the tank is still giving off tannins. I know it is not hurting the water but the human in me prefers to have the water somewhat more clear. I just came across your channel a few days ago and I am very glad to see someone else supporting dirted, no filter tanks. I am also very happy to see this explanation of the food web and an actual demonstration of adding it to the tank. This video cleared up some things that FF has not gotten very deep into, even though he has a massive number of videos. I will continue catching up on your videos in order to learn as much as I can from you, in addition to the great education I have received from FF. Thanks for posting your videos.
Your welcome and that’s great your back into the hobby. I throughly enjoy keeping nature tanks. Father Fish and LRB Aquatics have been huge influences on me in this hobby from that perspective. There definitely is a lack of actual how to videos when it comes to the dirted tank processes and I like to show in depth what I’m doing to help. I really liked this video. My setups are a cross between sponge filters and sand bottom tanks with plants . I am going to try this method as I am looking for alternative foods for my fish

Thanks Gil, sometimes they can smell but what I found to help that is you can put a few small floating plants on the surface to help clean the water , you can use an air stone as well to agitate the water so it doesn’t sit stagnant. I always cover them so I typically don’t smell them till I take the paper towel is off I cover them with. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Thanks for watching 😁👍

I'm waiting on so stuff from FF to arrive then I will get started on it. I'm so excited to try this type of tank. I do have a question for you though do you get any kind of stinky smell from these dirted setups?

Could they be like a midge larvae??? But midge larva are red... Interesting stuff Pal I would probably leave a small carpet of algae but as long as it doesn't choke things out. I would be interested if the food cycle continues or if they get eaten up.. Is there an amonia spike when you add?? Just curious Full view as always!!!
I actually was told on the FF discord they believed they were some type of midge fly. I’m leaning towards keeping the algae in that tank and just see what happens over time. No ammonia spikes that I ever detected anyway. All my plants would consume it pretty quickly. I can’t keep nitrates in my water. Thanks for the support and watching my friend😁👍
Sounds like mulm/detritus . I have that in all my tanks. I leave it, it will gradually breakdown to feed the plants but if it gets too thick you could syphon some out of you wanted, but it’s nothing to worry about. Thanks for watching 😁👍
I have a question.😊 I have a water fountain that's not been put together but just laying around collecting water leaves & whatever else.all the stuff that's just sitting in it is considered good bacteria right 🤔🤔 im learning just want to make sure I'm right before I goof 😊😊
@@roxiereed4061 yes it absolutely will have microscopic life in it. May not have as much diversity of life compared to a body of water but will definitely contain life. 😁👍
No, but I may cut down how many times a week I feed. Now if these webs multiply enormously where copeds and other critters are swimming everywhere that will be a different story. I have about 6 guppy/endlers in my puffer tank and have never fed them once in there in over 2 months and their bellies are always full but my concern with my tanks full of other fish is if I don’t feed them they will deplete the the organisms before they can take hold. But also for me this is more than just for food. Having the diversity of these microorganisms within the aquariums will keep my fish and ecosystems healthier because any disease or pathogens will have a hard time taking off with that much competition. I keep getting a brown powdery “leaf dust” on the top of my sand substrate. What is it?…and do u s siphon it out?…or just let it be?…..🤔
