Not sure what it is about these cartridge talks that makes them ENDLESSLY entertaining, but they just are. I'm never going to own or shoot a 33 Nosler, but that's beside the point. I just like to listen to some knowledgeable experts break it down. And maybe from that I'll be able to glean/distill some truths about what I DO shoot. It probably also takes lots of us back to our childhoods, reading Guns & Ammo, dreaming about what we'd get if we only had a better paper route . . . .
I’m glad they actually mentioned margin of error in a hunting situation. Everyone loves to talk about shot placement and tiny bullets being about to kill big animals. But when it doesn’t land perfect, bullet weight and velocity can help compensate for that mistake
I love how I can bank on every episode bringing up the 300 Weatherby and the punishing recoil. It’s as reliable as the sun rising in the east. I flinched when I typed that out. Thanks team!
Talk should do a podcast on a barrel/caliber swap on a Tikka and/or Savage 110. Ryan and numerous other guests (Travis included) will talk about barrel swaps and changing calibers often and I think it would be a neat podcast idea.

Larger calibers of the same bullet weight class and same case volume will typically produce higher velocities due to the larger bore having more crossectional area behind the bullet; producing a higher aggregate of force behind the bullet for a given psi. Typically every increase in desired velocity requires that the increase in pressure/powder charge to be squared. For example to increase velocity from 2000ft/s to 2400ft/s is a 1.2 (120%) increase requiring a 1.44 (144%) increase in pressure/powder charge (1.2²). So you can increase the velocity of a given bullet weight by either increasing the caliber or pressure/powder charge.
I think if the American outdoorsman didn't love 30 calibers so much the 33 nosler would be widely touted as one of our better all around big game cartridges, because it really is. The 33 nosler is one of the finest case designs I've witnessed
I absolutely love these magnum cartridge talks. Although they didn't get into it in this talk. They really haven't gotten into behind the reason or thought process of old school magnum designs vs new school magnum designs. I know that the old school thought simple trick was to look at your bullet size and double to close that shell case length. New school magnum thought process seems to center on look at the BC and use a shell case of close length but fatten up the shell case diameter. I also suspect that the difference in the quality of gun powder's between the time periods comes into play.
Glad to see a thoughtful discussion on larger calibers. So tired of all the content pushing hunters to use light calibers for real work at ridiculous ranges for the majority of hunters. The animals deserve better. This was a very good dose of reality. Thank you.
Love the Cartridge talks and mention was made in this discussion of one of my favourites. I’d love to see now a cartridge comparison of the 33 Nosler and the 338-378 Weatherby.
So you talking about the weight of that gun, and I just redid my 708 Thompson center venture was always getting 3/4-in groups out of it. Different stock, different scope and different bullets. I don't know what it's really like for you guys out west climbing, real mountains. But our mountains in Pennsylvania are as steep as yours out there in some areas

Love your cartridge talks. Watched so many of them now. The ramblings are cool and you all bring your own little piece to the table keep it up. I actually have a request for a future cartridge. I think it’d be cool to watch a talk on the 6mm max. Interestingly I bet 1 or 2 of you haven’t heard of it before. It’s fairly new and I’m sure you’d be able to get the creators on to talk about it too. It’s essentially a cartridge that competes with the like of the 6.5 Grendel and 6Arc. But if the numbers are right might actually be better, especially due to the bolt face.

Allegedly, some USMC scout snipers used this cartridge early on in the Southeast Asian Conflict in the 1960s.
I love some 338 caliber stuff. It can be a kicker though. Even at 21 lbs my 338 Lapua has a good thump with the 300 SMK i shoot. It's not as bad as my lightweight 300 Win Mag. That is going to become a heavy barrel target rig at some point this winter.
