FINALLY! A long range gel test, Ryan is one of a very few TH-camr that emphasizes the down range effects of bullets. This could be a really genius idea for a whole series of videos. Something that I’m really interested in, MORE PLEASE!
22 arc, 224 valkyrie, 6 arc, and 6.5 grendel are the intermediate versions of the 308 family lol. Side by side, they're all hard to distinguish because they use the same parent case. I would love to see a head to head of all 4.
My 6ARC gas gun is likely my favorite rifle to shoot. Incredibly accurate and just a joy. The pandemic really shut this cartridge down but man I sure hope it gains traction and takes off. It deserves it!
The 6 Arc and the 8.6 blackout are the only two cartidges to have come out in recent years that piqued my interest enough to build and i definitely have zero regrets for either
We need a 6.5 Grendel vs 6ARC comparison!! Both are great especially in bolt gun platforms for deer hunting inside 300yds, 6ARC is definitely flatter shooting but 6.5 Grendel carries a better frontal area and more energy up close
@@mgabriel2636using my 6.5 Grendel handload (120TTSX at 2525) vs Ryan’s 6ARC handload (80TTSX at 3080) my 6.5 Grendel has more energy at all distances but drops below 2000fps at 275yds vs Ryan’s 6ARC dropping below 2000 at 375yds, muzzle energy is nearly identical at 1699ft-lb for 6.5 Grendel, and 1685ft-lb for 6ARC, 6ARC wins in the drop category at all distances, it also wins in the windage category but only by .5in at 500yds in a 10mph cross wind

You guys made me a 6ARC believer! Got myself a howa barreled action after Ryan's "stick rifle" video and can't wait to take it in the woods this season!
Got a Howa Carbon Stalker in 6ARC a few months ago, been a dream to shoot and I’m super impressed by the ballistics in this little package. Hoping to get to test it during deer season.
Same here. If you don't like the polymer trigger guard and magazine well, Jefferson makes an aluminum replacement. With scope and rings my Stalker only weighs 6 pounds total.

I have the Howa Mini 6mm ARC in a B&C M40 stock. It’s shooting 10 shot groups at 1 MOA with my handloads. 3-5 shot groups are sub MOA. I have the 22” sporter barrel. Accuracy is best when I’m running the can. Great cartridge and I am doing the 108 ELDM handloads at 2685 FPS.

I’m a huge fan of Barnes, as Ryan is, however I would argue that the 90 LRX in the 6ARC at 300yds on game is not sufficient. Awesome video guys!! After seeing the video some months ago, where Ryan bought his Howa, I picked up a Howa Mini (not the carbon) also in 6ARC. Beyond stoked to see Ryan's howa mini in action. The original video convinced me the mini in 6.5 grendel would be the perfect first deer rifle for my boy. Sometimes I wish I'd home 6 arc. I'm guessing the release of this video will only strengthen that wish.
I've never worked with Howa actions but it could be possible to just swap the barrel. It uses the same parent case as the 6.5 Grendel so the bolt is the same.

I really wish you guys would’ve tested the Hornady ELDM and some Berger options. In all the studies that I’ve seen, they give a bigger permanent wound channel than the bullets tested in this video.
In addition to the efficiency of the 6ARC, one thing you forgot to mention is the typical rate of twist in a .243WIN will generally limit projectile options. In saying that, the 80GR TTSX, 85GR TSX or a 100GR traditional soft point boat tail would be just about identical in performance to what you tested. The plus side for a .243 is you can pick em up off the shelf just about anywhere.
Very interesting. While playing with load development for the Howa Mini, I ended up shooting the TGK and the LRX as go to bullets. Loved seeing the gel tests. I ended at 2880 with the LRX and 2900 with the TGK… very similar to your loadings. TGK seems like the king of versatility. The LRX will be my go to when harvesting protein 👌
Finally got some of the 90gr TGKs to load in the ARC, haven't loaded then yet but I've been running 165gr TGKs in my 300WSM for years now and couldn't be happier.
I'd like to see you guys load up some 90gr Hammer Hunter Tipped bullets and compare it to the 95gr LRT load that Ryan likes so well. Recommend hitting up the Hammer folks for load data.
Ive been so interestes in yhe 6 arc and am definitely going to get one. I just really wished that after a couple years if popularity that big name manufacturers would have more factory options already. But still in love with the idea if the ARC
I bought a gas gun as soon as I heard about this cartridge. I bought a match grade barrel. It’s so accurate that other than being way to heavy it’s a fantastic rifle. I’m waiting till Howa makes it in a 24 inch bolt gun before I buy a bolt gun.
For those interested in a Gas Gun Loading with the 90Gr STGK (since nobody has it listed) Gas Gun Loading not published with any Reloading company. >400 rounds tested. 18” Barrel 82F° 2630 FPS 16” Barrel 92°F 2615 FPS 90gr Sierra Game Changer 26.5gr Hogdon Benchmark Federal GM205 SRP Starline Brass We tested a 26.8gr loading, and gained 40 FPS, but it showed ejector swiping and you could feel the difference. So we’re running 26.5 because it’s a safe bet. I will likely try to work it up by another 0.2 gr down the road. Other powders I tried: 27.8 varget came in at 2568 FPS
I have this in CMMG AR, and I REALLY, want to see some 65 to 75 grain loads for coyote hunting. 3200 -3400 fps muzzle speeds for long range. Would love a video!!
I just recently got into the 6 arc when I started building different caliber ar’s for coyote hunting and I’d love to see what you and Ryan could come up with for a loading on it!? I just recently purchased my dies and then picked up some 65 and 75 grain Hornady v-max projectiles and I’m going to see how they do! Also I’d love to see a cartridge talk on the 22 tcm and 21 sharp the new cartridge from Winchester! I’m a huge fan of the cartridge talks and love hearing what Ryan has to say about them! He’s the reason I picked up a 12-36 diamondback spotting scope and got into deer hunting!
Im a fan of the 6 arc. I think its about as close to a Goldilocks hunting cartridge as one can get. From varmint with a 58 grain up to mule deer with 100+grain bullets, at reasonable distances.
Yep , I couldn’t agree more. I’ve got a couple gas guns and then I thought a bolt gun would be nice so I’m not loosing cases out in the field . I went with the Howa mini also but I chose the 20” bull barrel and put it in a Trybe “chassis” from Optics planet . I like the little Howa so mich I bought a 300 blackout and a 6.5 Grendel all with the bull barrel . I started with the 80 Grn TTSX then got a smoking deal on 500 Ct of Berger 87 Grn VLD hunting bullets , then got another deal on the Sierra 90 Grn tipped game king and I wanna say I bought 800 of those . So I’m set for hunting bullets for hogs , whitetail , Axis and whatever else tempts me . Thanks for the long range gel I particularly enjoyed that and would love to see more . 6.5 Grendel , 6.5 CM would be top on my list . I’ve also got a 6mm Remington and probably going with a 6mm GT next z thanks for the informative video look fwd to more
Yup I would definitely love to see a 6.5 grendel vs 6 arc comparison. 6 arc seems like a great little round, but if factory ammo is harder to find and more expensive, is it worth it?
100gr 6.5mm ELD-VT Grendel delivers 6mm ARC performance out of much shorter barrels in Grendel. The speeds you see in this video are normal for 16-18" Grendel AR-15s in those weights.
I have a 6arc in an ar and regret it. Its very touchy with the adjustable gas block and I think it’s much better in a bolt action. Both 6arc and 6.5 Grendel are great cartridges though and in my mind the premier youth cartridge.
Have you guys managed to get the Dreaded Belted Case with the AR yet? That is a learning curve the Grendel guys went through. Getting the pressure up and a little too much gas and odd things happen to that case. It looks like Hornady uses a thicker case wall near the base now, so maybe that will reduce the problem.
I’ve been loading for and shooting Grendel since 2009 and only saw it once when I used too much Imperial sizing wax on one piece of brass in the sizing process. I have seen it with a friend’s 2000s-era 28” AA RLGS Grendel, due to it having too much plug dwell time. This will happen with any cartridge in the AR-15 though when you have too fast of a cyclic rate and the extraction process happens way too early when there’s still residual chamber pressure.
@@LRRPFco52 I knew it was often a timing issue (early extraction) but didn't go into details. It seems that pushing the pressures is often a factor and sometimes just backing down on the load solves the problem. In the roughly 20 years I have been following the Grendel this seems to pop up every now and then. Bill Alexander and someone with a moniker similar to yours responded to this issue in a a thread a couple of years ago (Sniper's Hide maybe?). There was a very good detailed explanation..
dude i got that new razor spotting scope a few weeks ago and absolutely love it. it is a little heavier than expected but the size is awesome. also i wish vortex had a replacement arca head for the pro gt tripod.
After getting a 25wssm ive seen my 300wsm n 7wsm are not really needed for white tail atleast out to 300 yds the 115gr berger vld is devastating n 6 arc will be a good round for me since 25wssm ammo n brass is hard to find n the wife will love to shoot it just having a hard time on 6arc or 22arc
I love 25 WSSM, but brass availability really makes it hard to feed. Once you go down in projectile weight with 6.5 Grendel, you get some pretty crazy speeds though for the same applications you might use the 25 WSSM. 80gr Hammer is one of them. 105gr MKZ is lightning-deadly as well.
I had a 243 now converted to 308.. My friends used to make fun of me for the 243 being a barrel burner... But really I only upped to 308, for the test of gunsmithing comprehension...😂
I've got all of these loaded in a gas gun with an 18" Odin. GK and ttsx are primary loads. 2800ish with ttsx and 2890 on GK. Nose and lrx don't group as good for me.
6mm creedmor. The podcasts with Forum give some compelling information that a small caliber would make more sense that the big stuff. Even for larger game like Elk. The bullet selection and shot placement seems more important than the caliber. Steve from exomtn had zero issues taking a huge Caribou from 600yds
I hope you take the 6 arc or 22 arc and compare it to the creedmoor family in long and short barrels. Same bullets but using powders appropriate to the cartridge. Or just factory loads of same bullet. Will the small cartridge that generally uses faster powders hold it velocity better than the larger/slower powder creedmoors in a short barrel?
6mm creedmor. The podcasts with Forum give some compelling information that a small caliber would make more sense that th big stuff. Even for larger game like Elk. Should shoot the gel at 600 yds and see.
Plenty of other cartridges I'd rather dear hunt with out of a bolt gun. However, I love this calibre in an AR-15 size weapon. Purchased one last year. If I had to downsize to a single rifle for my needs it would be the AR-15 in 6mm ARC.
I would be really curious to see what the 90 grain CX bullet from hornady would do, the 90 grains seem to keep up the velocity but have the monolithic design
This would be a perfect shtf/ survival cartridge option, a good amount of flex up and down in power with out loosing accuracy and probably taking smaller game without blowing it up.
@@rolliskarvellis6254 Well, could have been chicken!! They have a chicken gong @ 500m at Vertex range. You impromtu hit it, slinger is "Chicken Proofed"
Lever powder is your friend in 6 ARC. 90 ELD-X 3122 fps from a 22 inch barrel. 100 grain 3089 fps give or take depends on which bullet 103 ELD-X closer to 3100 to 3120 fps. never had a pig or deer get back up.
I just want you to show me the difference between the 6mm arc and a 243 Winchester in a bolt gun. The arc has a shorter action of course but when you are taking follow-up shots on game do you actually perceive how far back the bolt goes? The 243 is around 200 fps faster than the arc in factory loadings which is what most people shoot. The only advantage of the arc is less powder when you reload. Then you are getting close to a 243 Winchester with less powder I’m just not sure what the big deal is with the 6mm arc other than being in a AR-15 platform.
Self-spotting/sight picture management, recoil energy, overall rifle weight/balance. .243 Win is wasting a lot of powder with a non-optimum case design. It's too long for what it does, mainly the propellant column is too long with too shallow of a shoulder angle. Notice that the Dasher will achieve similar performance.
Great job boys but hard to beat a 6.5 grendel with a SST!!!! Explodes thoracic cavatie under 400. The wound channel on a 6.5 Grendel is devastating with an SST!!!!

I’m telling Hornady that you didn’t hand load and test the ELDX at 300. You’re gonna be in so much trouble! @hornady get em Jayden!
😂
There goes your birthday!
Love this style of video! Thank you.
Thanks for the data. I got a white tail and a black bear last season with a 6 arc ar I built. Both 1 shot kills. Shot placement is key.
Love both my howa arc and grendel.
6mm creedmoor is a better comparison to 243, but if people want to know more about 6mm arc, Wade at TPH podcast has put out a ton of information
I'd like to see you guys load up some 90gr Hammer Hunter Tipped bullets and compare it to the 95gr LRT load that Ryan likes so well. Recommend hitting up the Hammer folks for load data.
I would have loved to see a hand load of the Hornady bullet.
Very nice gentlemen! Great episode!
😮 Very few expenses were spared in the making of your video! That child size Howa, 😅 Seems like a great little truck gun...
Will there be a holiday cartridge talk? Or some other holiday talks. The holidays are way better with your talks! 30 minute talks that go long😂😊
For those interested in a Gas Gun Loading with the 90Gr STGK (since nobody has it listed)
Gas Gun Loading not published with any Reloading company.
>400 rounds tested.
18” Barrel 82F° 2630 FPS
16” Barrel 92°F 2615 FPS
90gr Sierra Game Changer
26.5gr Hogdon Benchmark
Federal GM205 SRP
Starline Brass
We tested a 26.8gr loading, and gained 40 FPS, but it showed ejector swiping and you could feel the difference. So we’re running 26.5 because it’s a safe bet. I will likely try to work it up by another 0.2 gr down the road.
Other powders I tried:
27.8 varget came in at 2568 FPS
Yeah just like 243. It’s why they are popular!
I’ve also got a 6mm Remington and probably going with a 6mm GT next z thanks for the informative video look fwd to more
Thanks for doing a deep dive on the 6mm ARC, especially on hand loads for hunting. It is a cartridge that really shines in bolt action rifles.
I agree sir The highwayman is the greatest song ever!!!! Mark rulz!!
Yup I would definitely love to see a 6.5 grendel vs 6 arc comparison. 6 arc seems like a great little round, but if factory ammo is harder to find and more expensive, is it worth it?
Local store has 105gr BTHP for $40/box in 6 arc.
103gr eld-x are $45/box
100gr 6.5mm ELD-VT Grendel delivers 6mm ARC performance out of much shorter barrels in Grendel.
The speeds you see in this video are normal for 16-18" Grendel AR-15s in those weights.
The build quality of the rifle is not super high, but they shoot really well and extremely light. It's a dream mt. gun for deer.
Should have tested the cavity back bullets. Awesome bullets
I hand loaded the 103 eldx for a 20” Howa. Got it goin 2900 with leverevolution.
I have a 6arc in an ar and regret it. Its very touchy with the adjustable gas block and I think it’s much better in a bolt action. Both 6arc and 6.5 Grendel are great cartridges though and in my mind the premier youth cartridge.
This was such a good test. It makes me think better things for my arc.
Like this cartridge. Would like to see more
I ve been waiting for this!!
I’m so glad they came out with the 6mm ARC, my 243 won’t kill anything.
Can’t press like fast enough. Great topic.
I'm already invested in the 6.5 Grendel and will stick with it, if I didn't have it then I would look closer at the 6 ARC,
I’m hunting with the 108 ELDM out of my Howa Mini 6 ARC. My handloads exceed the KE of a Hornady American Whitetail 243 load at 350 yards.
9:05 Mark "Impact" Ryan, "I know"...Cameraman Laughs 😂
Love the video you guys make.. Please keep up with it..
Tyler Freel just got a moose with a 22arc with the 88gr ELDm. 6ARC with the ELDM/X would be fine for deer.
Really need to try the Speer 100 SPBT they are incredible and very accurate out of my carbon stalker
Yall need to get Jayden Q from Hornady on the show
If there's anything the world needs, it's more Hornady marketing nonsense
I don’t think they do. No offense to Hornady, but we hear nothing but Hornady talking points all the time. Gimme a WSM or a 6.5 Grendel please.
dude i got that new razor spotting scope a few weeks ago and absolutely love it. it is a little heavier than expected but the size is awesome. also i wish vortex had a replacement arca head for the pro gt tripod.
I’m so excited about this one!
Talking about 10x scopes, it would be nice if Vortex made a fixed 10 that falls between the SWFA 10X, and the U.S. Optics 10x.
Thanks for the video!
Great video and great shooting.
Are those the “factory” included Howa rings?
Great video! What was the barrel twist? Sorry if I didn't catch it.
I'm only 6 mins in, but I love all the bullet choices this far. 🎉😊
I do wish we got to see the eldx at range since it is the only current factory hunting option for those of us who dont reload
Cool to see the 6BR , oh sorry ARC getting some recognition after being a dominant fixture in precision shooting competitions for how many years??
Now that’s a sweet rifle!
What stock are you using here with the howa action? Thx. Great info.
I like the Barnes TTSX because it’s basically a blender going through the animal
Yeah, the heavies keep energy potential deeper into trajectory❤ That's what she said
I would be really curious to see what the 90 grain CX bullet from hornady would do, the 90 grains seem to keep up the velocity but have the monolithic design
This would be a perfect shtf/ survival cartridge option, a good amount of flex up and down in power with out loosing accuracy and probably taking smaller game without blowing it up.
Excellent
But, it is "Chicken Proofed" yet?
Haha!!! We must see it be “chicken proofed”
Please enlightening me, and others on the "Chicken Proofed" test.
@@rolliskarvellis6254 Well, could have been chicken!! They have a chicken gong @ 500m at Vertex range. You impromtu hit it, slinger is "Chicken Proofed"
@@js7127 Thanks!
Notice that the Dasher will achieve similar performance.
id like to see partition bullets added to the selection of bullets tested
Great job boys but hard to beat a 6.5 grendel with a SST!!!! Explodes thoracic cavatie under 400. The wound channel on a 6.5 Grendel is devastating with an SST!!!!
