  • In this video I review one of the more obscure Nosler cartridges. I talk about the history and the performance of the 33 Nosler and question why it was made in the first place.

    Go with the 340 Weatherby Magnum. If you can handle the recoil it is simply amazing. New propellants and bullets have wonderful performance.

      I hunted with a mark v accumark in 340, I killed a lot of stuff to death with it, too much noise with muzzle brake tho, I've "downgraded" back to the " modest" ol 300 weatherby since then

    I'd still go with a 338 federal. Great efficient cartridge that should've been more popular.

      I have been considering it. With a 18 inch barrel and a suppressor.
      The bigger 338:s suffers to much from the short barrel.
      I think that the problem is not being unpopular but unknown.
      Nobody hates it they just dont know of its existence. 😪

      The 338 Federal beats the 338 Marlin's pressure handicap....both quite nice, but the 338 Federal can be put in so many rifle platforms....

    I think it would be cool to do a comparison of the 338 Lupua and 338 Norma Magnum. How do they stack up against Nosler, Weatherby and Winchester.

    The 33 nosler will fit in a standard length rifle action, which means you can rebarrel a rifle such a 7 mag and not even have to change the boltface. If you have a Savage 110 or a "Remage" type action with a barrel nut, it obviously becomes even easier to convert. The 340, RUM and Cartridges all require a magnum length action. These rifles tend to be more expensive, heavier, and inherently less accurate because of the action flex under heavy recoil.
    If you are a southpaw, this becomes very important, because of the scarcity of left hand rifles. Find an old left hand 300 win mag, get a new stick, rebarrel and have Cerakote applied.

    The real question if the 30 cals aren’t cutting it, why not go with a 375 ruger? Max handload from nosler book a 260 grain at 2941. That’s nearly 5000 pounds of muzzle energy. Same bolt face, same action length. But with way more power.

  • @r.awilliams9815
    @r.awilliams9815 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I think one of the reasons Nosler's numbers look a little funny sometimes is because they're shooting their data with E-Tip mono-metal bullets, which cause somewhat higher pressures than lead core bullets. That's why the book shows higher velocities with the 265 grain bullet over the 250 grain, I believe.

    I have a 33N and a 338L, both with 26” barrels. The 33N works very well with the 185-250gr bullets, depending on powders it gets very close to the 338L. I run a 185 ttsx at 3240fps with 7828 with no pressure.
    The 33N was handy capped by staying at 3.4” oal, if it had maxed out a rem 700 action at 3.6” it would gain significant usable case volume. But a m48 action is maxed out just over 3.4” in the mag box.

      I'm not going the 338 cal way, Someday maybe a 338 Win Mag. But have a project to build a 7mm Semi lightweight Hunting rifle. Any action that I might choose will be 3.7-3.8"(If contrlolled feed beter). And cartridge most likely a 7RM. Ammo and brass everywhere, Seat out a 180grs max weight bullet, and get the 7PRC performace. If hot road might just get a 28 Nosler and a 1.2-1.5 K Savage Ultralight that has about .5" extra magazine space. One of the afordable(donnor rifle) options is the Vanguard in 300 WBY. About $500 used, $700 New, $1000+ carbon barrel. Bit old to go the Target hobby now. But Next lifetime will try it but 30 cal most likelly. Should I reincarnate in Alaska, then the 338-358 Cal would be the option. Debating wether to rebarel my old 30-06 to 35 Whelen or 280 AI

    I own a custom built 33 nos with a 24" proof barrel.... the book lies. I shoot the 225gr at 3075, and the 250's 3085fps, keep in mind these are the loads that shot the most accurate, not the fastest. I can get them higher with less accuracy. The rifle was designed for a better option then the 338 win, and more efficient than the LAP or the 340 and or the 338-378. It's a great cartridge in my opinion.

    It's seems when a cartridge first comes out, it gets hyped up. My 7mm wsm factory federal 160 partitions advertising 3150 at the muzzle for 3500ish ft-lbs at the muzzle, 2005 loading. The last loading I seen from federal(not sure they even load for it anymore) was 3000 fps and 3300 ft-lbs, trophy tip loading I believe. Just show people buy into it. I did with the 7 wsm. Good cartridge and an excellent performer but what was claimed initially...

    My 338 Lapua runs 3125fps with a 250gr, and 2850fps with a 300gr - the Nosler isn't keeping up with that...but it's a solid design.

    Seems like 33 nosler and 338 weatherby rpm are the only readily available 338 cartridges at stores and online. With the 33 being the cheaper of the two and faster.

  • @forrestebert5276

    You are correct why? Buy a 338 Ultra mag and be Happy. I have a switch barrel rifle in all the Ultra mag offerings and I like the 338 but it wears the 300 barrel 95% of the time! Retumbo and a 210 grain bullet I can take anything on this continent no problem period as I have done so! Now for the biggest game in the world the 375 is one hell of a cartridge if you can handle the recoil? If you know what it is like to spare with a boxer then you know how one recoils but deadly on the delivery end as well!

    I'd far sooner use a 338 win, although I would love a 340 weatherby by far the most.
    Probably mostly because I think the name is cool, but I'm also a weatherby fan.
    My next older brother likes 338win mag, and I shot my first deer and bear with it as a young teen. We thought recoil was cool, and only whimps cared about it lol.
    I've noticed Nosler produces
    data very hot for their cartridges, and seems to download the weatherby cartridges.

    I’d go with the 338 Win Mag or a 340 Wby. Yesterday, I shot my 338-378 and 300 Wbys with brakes. Not bad at all. Of course, the 338-378 is louder, deeper and has more recoil, with or without brakes. The 338-378 with a brake is about like my 338 Win Mag without a brake. The 338-378 without the brake reminds me of my old 378 Wby. Very similar in recoil with similar bullet weights. Love the .338 bore diameter!

      @johnvillalovos5082 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      One more thing I’d like to add re. the 338-378 Wby, is a considerable amount of smoke coming out of the brake/muzzle. It’s clearly evident that all of the powder is not being completely burned in the 26/28 inch barrel length. I thought I just shot a very powerful muzzle loader! 😂 This was Weatherby factory ammo topped with 225 gr. Barnes TTSX bullets.

    I'm not exactly sure why manufacturers shorten the 338 version of their cartridge. The 338 rum was shortened and then guys had to make the 338 edge based on the 300 RUM case increasing the performance . Then Nosler did it. Makes no sense as the larger payload requires more powder for increased performance. A 100 fps increase is not really worth it. 200fps is . If they had used the 300 Nosler case ,that would be possible.

    I think we get carried away worrying about speed . For hunting purposes a 265 barns lrx doing 2700 out of a 338 lapua kills things until they die from it every time

  • @ericstrabel4365
    @ericstrabel4365 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It was definitely incorrectly marketed. No way it's going to compete with the magnum length action cartridges with the heavies for long range. However, the cartridge does make a lot of sense for a shorter barrel and suppressed hunting set up. A 20" barrel with suppressor will still match the tried and true 338 WM with a much longer barrel.

    From what I’ve heard nosler is no longer supplying federal with bullets for loading so I’m thinking your gonna see nosler do the same thing as hornady with reinventing the wheel every couple months. It’s come to the point all manufacturers can come up with is the re-work old cartridges with heavy for caliber bullets and fast twist rates. The whole process has actually become boring you can almost predict what there gonna bring out next. If the want to really impress us give us a powered that burns hotter/faster gives twice the velocity with half the recoil and no increased chamber pressure. 😂😂

    No thanks. Rather have an 338win built on an long action with 28" barrel. This pushes 300gr at respectable velocites with minimal powder and manageable recoil.
