    I've seen I don't know how many reviews of this car and its Kia sibling. Yours added considerably to my knowledge base and I'm actually glad you got the car late. You guys' approach to car reviews is so thoughtful, interesting, informative, different.

      I've only heard Savagegeese and Alex on Autos (in a Redline review actually) mention the i-pedal or regen braking making passenger heads bop and that could make you car-sick. That's actually a pretty important thing to mention and I'm glad they did. Shows how thorough they really are.

    I understand the anxiety of being the "last in the media" to get your hands on one of these. But the great thing about y'all having actual real-world expertise is we'll gladly wait for a take that gives us more than the 1,003 "pretty good, looks neat!" videos that have been done on the Ioniq 5. You made it clear the Hyundai means business, and I think the whole Ioniq line is really gonna take a big share of the market in the coming years.
    Speaking of expertise, congrats to Cinematographer Jack on packing focal length and f-stops on top of his world-renowned engineering prowess. Cheers

      This is why I watch this channel. It's so frustrating when every car review is "looks good, has pedigree, feels nice and has soul". That doesn't help me at all. I want to know what kind of suspension it has, what the interior looks like and how it functions for daily driving.

      The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a recall for 2019-2020 Hyundai Kona and 2020 Hyundai Ioniq electric vehicles after over a dozen battery fires were reported. The agency is also warning owners against parking their vehicles near their homes or any flammable structure.
      An electrical short in the Kona’s lithium-ion battery cells increases the risk of fire while parked, charging, and driving, NHTSA said, adding, “The safest place to park them is outside and away from homes and other structures.”
      Last month, Hyundai announced that it would recall some 76,000 Kona EVs built between 2018 and 2020 over battery fire concerns. It was the second recall for the Kona but the first one that was global in nature. The automaker also said it would recall some Ioniqs and electric buses that it manufactures. In total, Hyundai said it would recall 82,000 vehicles, which it estimates will cost $900 million.

    I’m a traditionalist that grew up loving accords, civics, GTI’s and my love for n/a V8 and n/a Porsche’s and this would be the first EV I would buy. That is after my never dying 07 Prius finally kicks the bucket.

    My dad just bought one of these. It’s quite a vehicle to drive and see. Everything about it is, for lack of a better word, futuristic.

    I love how you and Jack slowly became the perfect automotive duo. Smoothly Bouncing ideas and explanation of each other, throwing subtle jokes and mixing phenomenal cinematography with exceptional editing. Savageese in no longer a TH-cam channel.       @@virid6819 Maybe condensing what I truly meant in a sentence didn't help my point to get across as I Intended. Allow me to elaborate. I think savageese is targeting a niche audience rather than appealing to the masses. Nobody talks more in-depth about everything a car has to offer like Mark does. And he did that since day on, you can go as far back as his 2015 GMC Yukon review. It really shows the man is a critique master.
      That's why I think this channel is a category on its own.
      And when people bring automotive journalism especially Chris Harris and Jason Cammisa into the conversation, they're getting it wrong. Yes both are charismatic fantastic presenters and very entertaining to watch, but just because they're in the automotive category doesn't mean they belong to the same conversation as savageese.
      And I'm not by any means interested in upvotes or like, it's not like I convert them to money. I just spoke my mind and heart, a famous Arabian trait.

    Drove both of the E-GMPs. Kia is a sportier drive, more cockpit, driver focused interior.

    I test drove this recently and if I had the money and somewhere to charge it (I don't have a garage), I would have bought it. I'm not paying markup so it would have been difficult, but I would have moved heaven and earth to make it happen. Love the car! Not as fast as the Model Y, but drove better and is made better.

      Actually, the Ioniq 5 and EV6 (AWD with bigger battery) are as fast or faster than any Model Y besides the Performance from about 0-80. Quarter mile, the Y is a bit faster. But there's the Ioniq 5 N and the EV6 GT which are again just as fast if not faster than the Performance...

    Important clarification regarding the charging of this vehicle. The 800v capability/architecture is part of the CAR, not the external public charging infrastructure. As such this car (and a few others, like the Porsche Taycan) can take advantage of already available public DC fast chargers of 350Kw to charge to 80% in roughly 18 minutes. Most other EVs are built around a 400v system and even if you hook a "400v" car up to that same 350Kw charger on the road, it would not be able to accept a charge that fast. So it's not that you are looking for a "800v" DC fast charger on road trips, it's that your Hyundai/Kia EV can pull up to the already available 350Kw fast chargers on the road and get you a quicker fill up.

      Seems like the fast-charge in these cars would degrade the battery quicker, similar to the same feature in cell phones. I see why it’s needed, but I’d prefer a system that keeps the battery “fresh” for longer.

      @@moloono1 that's just level 1/2 charging, you plug in to lower power and charge overnight or while at work, depending where the charger is. DC fast charging is really just for long trips, the bread and butter of EV charging is just charging slowly while you're already parked

      And actually I can imagine 800V Systems degrade less over time because normally much less heat is generated while charging (this is one of the main points why 800V systems can charge faster).

    I live in Southern California, which is likely to be the core market for this vehicle and I've already seen a lot of them on the road. It maybe biased because this vehicle has a ton of road presence (the anti-NPC mobile). Looks like Hyundai might have a hit on their hands with this one.

    This is the absolute best review of this car on the internet and significantly adds to the understanding of the vehicle beyond the usual regurgitation of a spec sheet and then shouty qualitative superlatives about the usual driving focus points.     I would totally choose this or the Kia over a Tesla. I'm more than willing to sacrifice a little speed to gain a tremendous amount of reliability and build quality.

      @@leecm Well relatively speaking based on reports....Hyundai group is one of the top in terms of quality as a brand. And if you compare specifically w/ Tesla...I mean...Tesla isn't anywhere near the worst actual car manufacturer out there. Tesla has consistently been rated the worst quality by any report (panel gaps, paint quality, fit/finish, etc etc). We're talking normal stuff (it's an iPod masquerading as a car. I could build a better quality car. Lol

      Yes. Hyundai and Kia are average in reliability, but Tesla is near the bottom. They have had so many problems getting their cars properly assembled and painted. That's ridiculous given the prices they charge. I'd much rather have this practical box of a car than the swoopy Model Y.

      @@markmiller3279 Average in reliability? What do you base that on? All objective publications based on actual data say Hyundai Kia Genesis (HMG) in the past 5 years are in the tops for reliability. Granted the old HMG had sketchy reliability which most people base their opinions on.

    Thank you for an honest and well thought review.
    The four dots on the steering wheel are morse for letter H, clever they kept the logo, but didn't.
    The small room in the front by the floor are good for the items you need only after when you park, at the dealer they kept the RFID tags for different charging suppliers.

    Can’t forget the warranty, best I’ve seen for an EV, and definitely helped with buying anxiety. 10 years (or mileage) on a battery is no joke

    As always, a great thorough review, nut to bolts, pros and cons. A car is uniquely individual to the driver. SAVAGE GEESE is the best thing to actually getting behind the wheel of your own test drive.

    Great report! Well balanced. I've owned mine 4mth now (in NZ), the base model 58kW rear drive. Style mixed retro-modern to my eyes. Never go back to ICE after the great combination of power, suspension, braking dynamics ... and SILENCE. Just a point: the 4 dots on the steering wheel likely are " H " - in morse-code! Look forward to your next update.....

    I have a model 3 and a model y ( with 7 seats). I was thinking about changing my M3 RWD with IONIQ5 AWD (I am in Canada). I have watched many many videos on IONIQ5. You guys are the best in terms of answering the questions a real buyer has and many other things. My only concern with this car is the charging network. We are so used to Tesla's network ( which works all the time unlike others). Thank you for creating great content.

    It's insane how good progress hyundai as a car brand has been doing for the last couple of years. They go full EV while also releasing enthusiast petrol cars like i30N or i20N! I think that's the future: 95% EV where you make the big money $$$ and 5% petrol cars for the car guy/gal, where you might take a loss but it's free PR for your brand!

      Totally agree. We just got 2 of these. I never thought I would ever own a Hyundai and I love them. One of them replaced my dads fully loaded 2020 BMW X5 and it actually likes the Ioniq more.

    I don't particularly "love" the design but I respect it, bc I can see what they wanted it to be, which is being a real head-turner, but also an entirely new page for their brand.
    From what I've gathered so far, the Ioniq 6 could be the one I'm gonna drool over.

      I couldnt get over the fugly screen set up. It's gonna be in your sight at all times. It just looks out of place and totally terrible. If you going to be supercheap with the screens and have them look like an afterthought, at least make the bezels dark. Like in the KIA. It's still terrible but it's not as much of an insult to the eye.

    Excellent review, and vehicle, obviously. The comment about Hyundai/Kia's overreactive stability/traction control could not be more true. I've had several what feel like near-death experiences turning left or right under hard throttle at a busy intersection and having the power cut drastically. Now on my third new Kia SUV to do this, I've resorted to turning off the stability control ahead of time if possible in those situations.

    While this and the Kia EV6 aren't to my liking style wise, I can respect how unique they are, along with how interesting and differentiated the product is. Being strictly a sedan/coupe guy I'm very interested to see what the Ioniq 6 will look like.

      I own a kona ev and I hate it because every day I can see the missed opportunity and the potential an electric platform would have in a RWD sedan. With the ioniq 5 being so solid I have really high expectations for ioniq 6 as well

      Haven't seen them in person however I think the Hyundai looks pretty good. The kia not so much. Kind of the reverse of the telluride/palisade.
      I think this and the ford will be the best to live with assuming you don't need the super charger network which is honestly the only reason to buy a Tesla.

The Kona is still very good for what it is (basically just a very competent compliance car), but it is frustrating in that you can see that all of the ice-packing problems are still carried through into the design, I will probably dump mine for an Ioniq 5 at some point when the potato chip shortage is over. Through it all, I recently drove a combustion Kona loaner while having a manufacturing defect fixed, and honestly going from driving electric for the last 3 years back to a combustion vehicle, I felt like I got cancer. Driving around with the raspy four cylinder, weak torque, it feels like you're driving a that car is broken, by comparison, I couldn't stand it, I think at this point I'd actually choose not own a car and save the cash, than have to drive a vehicle like that as my daily.

    Being last to get access to the Ioniq5 is a good thing in my opinion. Instead of breathlessly rushing a review, you get to see what the car is like after some hard miles. The first reviewers will never know if squeaks and rattles will develop. In future reviews, it would be nice to know how many miles your review sample has. I also appreciate that you compared it to it's senior siblings, which were half-hearted efforts at best.

    It is a wonderful looking vehicle. It seems as though the Korean brands are really picking up their game. Every one of their vehicles looks unique, the interiors are sharp, and the quality is good. Pair that with the best warranty in the biz, and you’ve got a winner.
    I’m a truck owner, but I certainly wish they’d enter that market.

    Car looks amazing! But it’s a nightmare dealing with any car dealer especially Hyundai dealers. Hyundai should start selling direct to consumer like Tesla.

      Dealers are local businesses. Hyundai doesn't make them good or bad, and they vary just like any other mainstream brand. When we were shopping none years ago our local Hyundai dealer was the best of the brands we visited (Honda, Mazda, and Ford were all worse). The Hyundai guys knew their product, were happy to let us test drive, and were entirely willing to handle the final details via email. They even delivered the car to a closer dealership (not Hyundai) owned by the same people for us to pick it up. I'd happily deal with them again.
      Of the others, only the Mazda salesman knew his product, and he just answered questions when asked. The dealership was inclined to the same "keep them waiting" tactics as so many others.

    First off I must say that I felt that you gave a very comprehensive, detailed, and objective review of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, while at once providing us with your personal insights as to what makes the Hyundai Motor Company tick - insofar as their passionate quest to produce a truly consumer-friendly, quality EV vehicle with trim and performance options to reach many different economic levels. I absolutely loved the high technology assembly imagery you used so effectively in your presentation. Personally, I have been following this car, reserving it in May of last year initially then working with the dealership to bring it home to me. I have been informed that my AWD Ioniq 5 limited is at the Port of Arrival with delivery to the dealership in mid April '22. Thank you for your very professional and enjoyable in depth review!

      It depends how many road trips you'd plan to take it on. I wouldn't buy an EV if I didn't have some way to charge at home. EV's have the greatest benefit for daily commutes, driving in the city, etc where they are the most efficient and won't need to charge. Plug it in when you get home and wake up to a full charge the next morning.

      If you want to take longer road trips, it likely would. However, it's improving all the time, and that should speed up as more people buy non-Tesla EVs.

    I work near a Kia and Hyundai dealerships and see these everywhere now! It’s so weird how different automakers do things like I’ve seen some Ioniq 5’s with Halogen reverse lights yet this one has LED and the EV6 has LED as well

    Thrilled you got one. If I was to get an EV right meow, this or the ev6 would be my picks. However, there are ZERO chargers with 150 miles of my house that are over 50 KWH. I hate tesla, but they’re the only solution currently because of their network.

      @@mofayer there’s some good things about them, sentry mode is genius and their charging network integration into navigation is brilliant. But after that, it all falls apart. Their cars as a whole are not built to any fraction of their price point, Tesla customer service is horrendous and the company as a whole is very strongly anti-right to repair, making fixing these things extremely difficult and expensive. They did a few things right, but stepping away and trying to take bias aside, they don’t seem practical to own long term and their manufacturing, quality control, maintainability and customer service are massive detriments. Not saying others are perfect, but the impact that Tesla has had on the industry has also had the same pros and cons. A con being their tech mentality of ‘put everything in software, take all the buttons away, and then push it out regardless if it works, they can fix it with an update later’. Look at the new VW stuff, all through the infotainment and it’s horrible. I can’t blame them directly, but Tesla definitely set a tone going forward.

      @@Suction_ ok, your use of "hate" is justified. All this points are valid, but their QC has improved the past couple of years. After all Tesla is a tech company first (self driving), car second, and that's what you get. Also, all car manufacturers are anti RTR, even more with their EVs.

      @@mofayer I’ve heard that, and sure it’s improved, but my coworker just took delivery of a MY2022 model Y and the panel gaps issue is still a thing, and there’s some strange consistencies in the paint (blue). Interior is better, doesn’t seem as creaky, but it was almost $63,000. Sorry, I just don’t find that unacceptable. I know others are anti RTr, but not to the point that Tesla is at. I could at least go to autozone and get some sway bar end links for an ev6 someday, Something I don’t think you can currently for a Tesla. Obviously the battery concerns are the biggest ones there that Electrified garage and the like exposed pretty clearly

    The exterior is cassette futurism. I grew up looking at the aesthetics of squares and cubes. Simple shapes that are broken by origami creases, but retaining that simple silhouette. If I had the money, this is my EV. I've never looked at an EV before and said "I want that". I've seen how the moon roof works, I think it's gorgeous. I enjoy the interior space both from the front and rear. The front reminds me of all the minivans that I've had the pleasure of driving. There's always that small cubby hole near your feet, there's open space under the armrest, it's open everywhere. People can argue about space in numbers about the hatch all day, but I believe this is the most ideal hatch design to get the exterior to match. Most people have never used the upper portion of that hatch, everyone likes their gear below the window line so they can pull the privacy cover over it. I'll have one, if I had any money!

I already bought an N, and I think it's incredible what Albert Beirmann was able to do with the car handling/performance-wise. I'd love a review done on the car by the kind of high-quality production and reviews savagegeese puts out.

    This is the best ioniq 5 review I’ve seen and I’ve seen a ton of them. You just gained a subscriber. I’m a 2020 ioniq electric owner and I absolutely love my car. I was considering the upgrade but I’m going to wait. Range and battery technology is only going to get better. I do wish I had a flat floor and full glass roof. One thing I wish hyundai would keep is the BUTTON GEAR SELECTOR. Some people hate it I LOVE IT. I think it’s really cool and futuristic makes my car feel more like a robot. 💯🖤

    I'm impressed with this and the EV6. Not long ago we would look at 300hp as good for an expensive sports car, and now we have faster SUVs with most of the weight centered under you, and they're not crazy expensive. I found that in passing, this car's interior looked too plain, but it seems to have everything and the exterior design definitely stands out. Well done Hyundai, I would love to see this platform in a new Genesis Coupe.

    I'm glad you're still willing to put out "Long Format" videos like this on non-performance vehicles, because I'm sure you're taking a bath on the ad-share revenue with TH-cam compared to something a Porsche GT3 RS upload.
    I value your opinions on the vehicles you and Jack Singapore review, and I'm one of those folks that have said that I'd never buy a Korean car based on what I saw in the early 2000's from Kia/Hyundai. The older I get, the less I'm inclined to continue to hold this viewpoint.
    I want to buy from a domestic manufacturer, but I found myself wanting to watch this video given where the domestic manufacturers are placing their priorities. I hope Hyundai/Kia continue to offer the 300+ mile range RWD offerings in North America, as snow tires have proven to me that in many cases you don't need AWD with the correct seasonal tires.
    Thank you for offering an alternative viewpoint to the TH-cam channels that are all-in on the marketing POV of Ford & GM

    This looks amazing and I'm excited to see how it trickles down, but $50k+ is painful. I'd probably get a plug-in Ioniq for closer to $20k, since it's still all-electric for everyday trips and no range anxiety for longer trips.

      Yeah the Ioniq plug in is the current best deal in terms of pricing and affordability and practicality.

      It's important to note that many will qualify for the US $7,500 tax credit, bringing the fully loaded AWD model from $54k to $47k or $40k for the mid tier RWD. They price it knowing such and will likely drop/increase the price as incentives change. It's certainly still an expensive vehicle, though.

      True, but all they really had to worry about was tire/suspension noise. A modern aerodynamic shape has little wind noise, and electric motors are very quiet. Still, they did do a good job on it.

    This design somehow fits well with what Hyundai is doing! Looks unlike anything in their lineup but familiar enough (a lil bit of Audi influence imo, I think). Hope u guys do Hyundai's other brother, lol:

    Good review. We have already road tripped our Ioniq 5 from Northern California to Southern California and I can say that 300 miles of range at 80 mph down I5 does not happen. With cruise control on 80mph, strong headwinds and climate control used normally, we got around 200 miles before needing to charge. Good news is on 350K fast charges you absolutely can charge from 10% to 80% in less than 20 minutes. We stopped for 30 minutes to eat and take a bathroom break and charged from 7% to 90%.

    Counterpoint to the comment in the intro about some of the company's other EVs being gas cars with batteries packed into them - I'm fairly certain the Kona was originally designed with electrification in mind which is why the EV version is able to achieve such good range and not compromise space to fit the batteries

      With Kona EV and E-Niro, electrification was was in mind but it was still not a priority. A well packaged EV will almost always take the form of RWD-based and have a frunk (or a huge interior if no frunk). Going FWD with an EV is basically nonsense, there's way too much torque to reliably get it to the wheels. The Kona and E-Niro are dominated by insane tire peeling and torque steer, the under the hood space is dominated by a lot of empty space, they definitely could have packaged both vehicles more efficiently if they had reduced the size of the nose and moved the bulk of the powertrain to the rear.

      @@0hypnotoad0 @0hypnotoad0 The Kona does have a lot of wheel spin if you're hard on the accelerator pedal, but it also has the characteristics of an electric hot hatch so it can be fun in that sense, and of course a bespoke EV will package in an electric drivetrain better than one that's designed to also accomodate a gas one, under the hood of the Kona is pretty well entirely occupied by the electric motor though, it's not empty space like what you find in something like the Mazda mx-30

You are actually learning about this platform and what it does. Nothing wrong with the entertainment factor but the priority is on providing you with great information to make a knowledgeable decision.     Awesome review, Mark. I test drove the rwd long-range version of this car at my local dealer (they didn’t have any others to try) and was also quite impressed with its performance for a daily driver. The only thing that was a bit lacklustre in my opinion was that a fair number of the touch points felt cheap given the price. This doesn’t seem to be the case in the model that you drove, so to me, it would make sense to spend the extra 5-10,000 to get this car for its full potential. I can imagine the awd version is even better - it is also the version that I would go for given the harsh Canadian winters where I live.
    As these technologies become less novel and economies of scale really kick in, the base rwd version will be the exact sort of vehicle that makes sense as a daily driver for almost anyone, it’s just not quite there at the current pricing. Although for more enthusiast drivers, I think the range topping models are about the right price and make a compelling option.

      I haven't seen too many reviews on the RWD version. I live in SoCal so RWD is fine for me and I was wondering, would the over all driving dynamics be likely better in the RWD version (with stability and traction control off) like is often the case in ICE vehicles?

      @@ericlecours4208 honestly I’d have to try them both, but I tested the rwd version on a dry day so it isn’t completely different than what you may experience in SoCal. I tried all combos of regenerative braking and stability and traction control on/off. To me it felt pretty well planted, but with stability and trac on, the systems were pretty overbearing (like Mark said in the review). It felt good, but with the rwd’s lesser power figures, I would say that it is more of a utilitarian style vehicle. In my opinion, you wouldn’t have as much fun hooning it around like you’d think of a rwd ICE car. For the rwd, think of it as much better Nissan Leaf, less a hot hatch. I think if you want to have a really fun time with the car AWD higher trims is likely the way to go. To me it’s less of a fun toy and more of a just super competent do-it-all kind of car.

    I really like this car! Exterior wise, It's my favorite new EV suv. It looks sorta 80's/90's "techno" ... kinda cyberpunk-ish. The interior is ok but I wish the design was better... more practical, more physical buttons. Hate capacitive touch! Because of those reasons and the ridiculously angled rear that robs space, makes this a pass for me. Put a sorento interior here and make it boxy and I'm in!

    Much of our local taxi fleet in Jeju, Korea are Ioniq 5 or EV6. They seem to be great fleet vehicles with adequate charging infrastructure and short trips. As a passenger, they ride much better than midsized and compact cars, especially on questionable pavement. The quiet cabin is noticeable, even if the interior is nothing special. EV6 sacrifices some space for spaceship feelings.

      cuz this car's design is inspired by their old model Hyundai Pony, which was designed by the same guy who also made Lancia Delta. Giorgetto Giugiaro.

    Ordered the limited RWD 77,4kWh in Mystic Olive with black interior, sunroof, digital rear view camera and a lot of other stuff. Won't be delivered until january 2023 (which is fine as my Volvo contract expires then). Must have watched a hundred videos and reviews before and after ordering but this one was top three... Possibly top two. Good work!

    Probably the only video you need on the Ioniq. Thats said a lot of what you said is consistent to what I’ve seen on other reviews. Its a winner.
    Aesthetically I don’t think its for me, but I really ought to look to test drive one.
