  • The all-electric Hyundai Ioniq5 shares its architecture with the Kia EV6 but the two have wildly different personalities. Looking for a comfortable throwback utility vehicle from the future? Your search is over. The all-wheel drive Ioniq5 EV goes 256 miles on a charge, can juice up from 10-80% in the right conditions and will dust a Volkswagen GTI in the straights. It even pulls out of a parking space with no one in the car. Tom Voelk checks out the Ioniq5 AWD Limited in Phantom Black and finds a comfortable roomy EV with an airy cabin. It’s an electric vehicle worth waiting for.

    Speaking of styling....that silver vest was PERFECT attire for this car. Nice touch.
    Hyundai (and Kia) have really jumped ahead in the styling department the last few years. They've come a long way from when I owned a Scoupe back in the 90's! For example, it's nice to see a company finally realizing LED lighting can do amazing stuff.

    Great review! It convinced me. Ioniq5 over EV6… I’m an 80s kid, so the styling speaks to me… closest to a DeLorean I’ll get to, especially in the Shooting Grey Matte color. In Canada the Ultimate package (Limited in the US) gets rear heated seats. The “sound bar” as you stated near the screen is actually a magnet pegboard… no sound there but would be handy to magnetize your phone and place there… if only it had wireless CarPlay. I did hear that for 2023 model year they may add a rear wiper or one of those rear view mirror camera things that instantly make your rear passagers disappear when looking at the rear view mirror… great when mother-in-law is ridding along… however it won’t mute her… 😂… just kidding I love my mother-in-law (my wife may read this review). Once again stellar job on this review, keep up the good work!

    As always your reviews are awesome! I often ask myself asking that same question “How fast do your real need to go?” The reason your so awesome Tom is that your reviews always contain honesty, reason, and logic. Other auto reviewers always complain that any car or SUV is too slow if it hits 60 mph in over 6 seconds. That makes sense I guess if your driving a Ferrari La Ferrari but not if it’s say a Subaru Outback XT. I’ve said it before, you seriously deserve your own tv show!

    • @lanceareadbhar
      @lanceareadbhar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for saying this. I chose the RWD for this very reason. 0-60 in 7 seconds is plenty fast for me and the fact that it gets more range and in theory should be fine in the snow due to the weight of the battery confirmed my choice. The only downside is that in the US version, the RWD doesn't have the heat pump or battery heating system so the winter fast charging won't be as good and the heater will use more energy. On the bright side, the heater is better than the heat pump in terms of heat, with the cost of losing more range. Not a big deal unless you travel a lot during the winter in which case get the AWD.

    The EV market has changed quite a lot since I got my 2017 Chevy Bolt new. Back then, nobody wanted one and you can bargain the hell out of GM products. Still remember when all my friends were in disbelief when I told them I bought an electric vehicle, now everyone wants one. With federal tax credit and state incentive, my LT (not premier) came out to be $23,460 pre-tax. And with the recall, I'm getting a new battery, hopefully with the upgraded range of 250 miles. It's been a great car for us, so far spent $26 on an upgraded in-cabin filter.

      For road trips, Tesla is king, but we mostly charge at home so that advantage didn't really affect me. Also, the Ioniq 5 in the US comes with free 30 minutes of charging at Electrify America and we have a good number of those in the areas we would travel to when we would need a charge to get back home. I am so glad Tesla paved the way for EVs, but I think it's only a matter of time when the super charger network will be shared with other EVs which is good thing from a revenue perspective. I trust Tesla will find a way to ensure traffic doesn't get held up too much during busy periods when this happens.

That was enough to sell me on the significantly better build quality of the Ionic 5. Went to a Hyundai dealer in Dallas and they were just taking an all black Ionic 5 SEL RWD off the truck. Drove it around the parking lot, dealer offered to sell it at MSRP with no add ons to inflate the price. Had it delivered to my house (44 miles away) at no additional charge, after it was prepped and charged. Fantastic experience so far and with the $7,500 tax rebate the cost was the same or cheaper than the new CR-V hybrid I also was considering. Couldn’t be happier!! (Also have a new white 2022 Tesla Model Y LR with white seats, tow hitch, 19” wheels, and FSD with an estimated April 12 - May 10 delivery date for an Austin TX pickup that I’m trying to decide what I’ll do with. Good problem to have.)

    I was all set to purchase either a Hyundai Ionic 5 or Kia EV6 and was excited about the prospect, but the greed of my local dealers combined with flagging inventory drove me right to Tesla. I just couldn't bring myself to pay $5k over MSRP for either of those vehicles. I may look at purchasing a used one in a year or two after seeing how they hold up in actual use.

      @@BrosBrothersLP No, you cannot. To my knowledge, Tesla is the only manufacturer that sells directly to the public. All others have to be sold through dealerships, who in turn, will take advantage of supply and demand to jack up the retail price far beyond the MSRP.

    Nice review, Tom, as always. I personally am fine with not having wireless CarPlay. I can't tell you how often the wireless CarPlay in my Kia K5 disconnects. It's extremely frustrating and potentially hazardous if you're relying on a navigation app to get to your destination.

Can they judge velocity and distance? Sure track time helps but those speeds require control and understanding. Mix that with unpredictable traffic and you have accidents.

    Hey Tom.. Thanks for including compare/contrasts of high speed charging infrastruture experiences with Tesla so people know what makes each brand/EV owner experience different :) Keep up the fantastic work!
    As an EV owner who highly PREFERRED the original Ioniq over the Tesla models- I ultimately chose Tesla BECAUSE of the charging infrastructure and am very happy I made that choice. I will share with any potential new owners that its not the car (or its range) but the CHARGING EXPERIENCE that makes ALL the difference in your enjoyment of EV Life.

      I’ve little plan of using DC charging for my EVs. Virtually all my long distance traveling will be in ICE cars for the forceable future. Already installed a 40 amps AC EVSE in the garage that’ll be used; this gives me ~ 200 mile round-trip range from house (will probably home charge twice per week).

    • @DrivenCarReviews
      @DrivenCarReviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It makes a difference if you charge on the road often. If you don't, it doesn't. But glad to see you're happy with your car.

    • @richiroproductions8262
      @richiroproductions8262 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tonys9413 I know that's what most new folks to EV say, or most car review channels that don't specialize in electrified transport say.. but here is the thing:
      1) Even if it's not a LONG road trip, people buy cars (in America) to do road trips- or be soccer moms, etc.
      2) If you've been paying dimes per KWH every day for a while, are you really going to then switch and pay dollars on the gallon for your LONGEST drives?
      Easy to think and say that when you're currently paying for gas. NOT so easy to swallow when you haven't bought gas in a long time (especially if they keep climbing closer to $10/gal (CA is already at about $7/gal)
      So to both of you- yes, if you "never use external charging" it doesn't matter.. but in the end- once you own an EV you are going to want to use it for trips that will require external charging.
      (best bet is to talk to EV owners, not gas car owners.. we've ALL been through all these "lessons learned" already)

    • @COSolar6419
      @COSolar6419 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@richiroproductions8262 It isn’t that we never take long road trips beyond the range of our I5. However it is pretty rare. So the vast majority of our charging is done at home.
      Obviously the current non-Tesla public charging experience needs improvement.
      I think we’ll get to a more universal public charging network in terms of connecting and payment sooner rather than later. It’s still early days and there has to be enough cars on the road to justify the investment.

    Design is a very personal thing... for me this is a cracker; fresh and crisp, with just enough interesting "points of difference." I prefer it to the Kia.
    However... I bought the Kia. I went to the Hyundai dealership; they had an Ioniq 5 on the prime spot by the entrance. The lot had an unkempt feel, with muddy puddles, weeds, rubbish etc. where I had to stand. The car was so close to a fence I could not walk around it... after a number of minutes nobody had acknowledged my existence, so I opened the car to check it out; it was filthy! There was grimy marks in the door shuts, mud buildup in the tailgate opening, along with a big cobweb that had been there so long he had probably died of old age!
    I liked the look of the car, but I quickly decided I did not want to risk a relationship with a business that couldn't even manage basic housekeeping... sad really!
    Despite their connection to Hyundai, the Kia dealership was a much better experience; Thank you Nathan and Blair. 👍
