So it's much much less of a certainty, not even a 50/50 chance since the Gods themselves were never really good parents to even their favourite children. “When does a comet become a meteor?” When it hits the earth. “When does a candle become a blaze?” When it catches the house aflame. “When does a ripple become a tidal wave?” When it strikes the shore. “When does the reason become the blame?” When it is assigned to another. Each of these questions can be answered with the same idea, that something changes when it does harm to something else. That is when a man becomes a monster.
but the question is made all the more complicated in justice. What is doing harm to another? Is your inaction to stop a monster not itself harming another? Inaction is as much of a choice as action is, no matter how much the trolley problem pretends it isn't. Choosing to take no action is still a choice.
@@xShadowChrisxidk if it works the same in america but in the justice system where im from we class that as crimes of action and crimes of inaction or omission. Depending on who commits a crime of omission it is just as bad as a crime of action and the person answers for the same full legal consequence that they would if they had committed the crime of action. The most poignant example I have for this comes to parents and children. The parents/guardians (even if only temporary guardians) have the duty to care and protect the child, so if something happens to the child in a situation where the caretaker could have avoided it from happening, they will answer as if they caused the harm themselves (which they did, by inaction instead of action). Like, say, if a child is left alone in a locked car in a hot day while the parent goes shopping, and the child passes away due to overheating. The parent had the ability to prevent this outcome and did not, so they are charged with first degree murder.
I like to point out the beginning deliveries of line 'I'm just a man' was used to justify he can't harm the baby but as he continues on the song, the line 'I'm just a man' was used to justify this cruelty. He tried to reason with the act, saying he's just a man, he can't do it, but at the end of it, sadly, it's because he's just a man can he be capable of doing such a thing
I think another meaning for that line could be that he is not a god but a mortal and therefore he cannot change the baby's terrible fate. The only thing he can do is kill him and thus prevent him from turning into a monster.
@@yanirap.t.2654 Another interpretation, is that Ody is denying that he has become a monster by doing this, that this is not his moment where he has gone too far, and become a different person entirely. He is 'just a man', and the gods say he must do this, so who is he to defy them? He is no one, he is just a man.
All around good interpretations, for me I'm just a man meant to say that he was capable of both good and evil. Besides, man in human always refer to us being a flawed being. Thus for this moment, he is just a man is that he also want to live a fulfilling life with his family and didn't want any threat remains for the rest of their life, so he just a man means he also selfish for his own self and loved ones preservation. He is a man indeed.
i love how vastly different we interpret this! it’s so beautifully human! my own interpretation was him saying he was just a man because (similar to what nssheepster said) ody feels like he needs to follow orders. obedience is one of those moral dilemmas. at what point do you say “no. that’s going too far.”
One of the things I love about this song is that the question "When does a man become a monster?" has a double meaning. When does Odysseus become a monster, to protect his family? When does the baby become a monster to avenge his? I think this animatic does a really good job of keeping that question mutual between the two of them. I don't think it's ever clear which one Odysseus is asking, and I think that's the point.
Man, that one shot of Odysseus in his armor, carrying the baby with a distance in his heart, unlike Hector, who holds the baby close to him in his armor with his smiling wife, like Odysseus and Penelope would with Telemachus in that same situation... Knowing full well neither Hector nor his wife will ever be coming back to save him, while Odysseus has to live with the guilt when he goes home to his own living, loving family... Destroying one family tree, grown from love in a time of war, destroying one just like his own to save his own, not knowing that everyone else aside from Penelope and Telemachus will be ripped away from him in the very near future to possibly compensate... That Shit Hit Different™
SO GOOD. Your take on "Close your eyes and spare yourself the view" is the most gut-wrenching I've seen, like Ody just stabbed *me* instead. It's such a literal interpretation of what Odysseus is surely _thinking_ in all of them, but showing him physically covering baby Astyanax's eyes and steeling himself as he lifts the sword until he finally accepts that he can't make himself do the deed so violently ... it's very effective. Love that you've shown Neoptolemus in the crowd, since in myth it's usually him doing the killing if it's not Odysseus. It's a nice nod to other versions, and a reminder that though this moment pains Odysseus it's precisely because of the type of man and warrior Odysseus is (one who considers everything, a strategist, and who despite his best efforts cannot harden his heart completely) that it does so, unlike Neo who is usually portrayed in the moment as a mindless ball of rage with no care for honor or laws or consequence only violence. Sidebar that I love your design for Neo in both of these--such an effective shorthand for what I described, just by showing his face constantly in chaotic shadow!
Aa tysm for writing this haha! Also on Neo that's supposed to be blood, not a shadow. Thought if I drew full black blood on his face like on the Horse and Infant animatic it would get too distracting.
@@gigi2820 Oooh that makes just as much sense, idk why I never read it as blood, but now I'm imagining this kid styling his hair / doing war paint over the whole top of his face with the blood of his enemies and yep. That tracks.
i interpreted that in two ways: one is his genuine desire for the baby to suffer as less as possible (like the baby not seeing what was supposed to be the incoming stab), and the other was for himself, basically making the baby faceless so his conscience doesn't eat at him
OHOHOHO THIS WAS DELICIOUSLY PAINFUL The visuals were stunning, I especially adored the tree growing out of the baby… what a great callback to both Odysseus and Penelope’s olive tree (and the fact that he was basically destroying someone else’s) and the lyrics that the baby “will grow an avenger”
I love the look of the baby when he's about to be thrown off.. like he knows what will happen. Usually animatics make them oblivious to whats about to happen (which is equally hearthwrenching) but for there to be a feeling that he knows something is wrong.. uff Amazing animatic as always
I love love LOVE the way you portray Odysseus! He's just so tired, desperate to go home, and I was literally gasping when I saw his younger self fade back to the present. Huge props, this made me cry buckets
I feel like the line “when does a man become a monster” has a double meaning. Like when does the baby that he holds become the monster that will seek vengeance against him, or when does he himself become the monster for taking the innocent life of an infant.
Honestly, that makes sense. He's just a child, he doesn't know about anything that is happening outside. Meanwhile, Odysseus is a grown man who knows and thinks this innocent child should die.
I love how you included the detail of Odysseus and Penelope's marriage bed from the Odyssey. For anyone who doesn't know the Odyssey's end (slight spoiler), Penelope is skeptical when Odysseus returns home and reveals himself. So she tries to trick him by saying she had moved their bed, because only a few including the real Odysseus knew it was made out of a real tree. I think (it's been almost a year since I last read it so this is based off memory, correct me if I'm wrong) Odysseus is shocked and upset and asks how she managed to do it considering how he made it out of a tree. Penelope realises it's really him, they reunite and live happily ever after....... Until you remember there's a sequel to this... LONG OVERDUE EDIT #1 (sorry it took a year): the ‘sequel’ is called the Teleology, ALTHOUGH it was made WAY AFTER THE ODYSSEY and is by a DIFFERENT AUTHOR SO IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE CONSIDERED CANON IN HOMER’S UNIVERSE. Especially because it's a lost epic anyways. ALSO Ik that now in the EPIC musical Odysseus isn't successfully coerced by Circe (sidenote: I have made a long comment in the replies on this topic [pls check it out before arguing: it's the second part of my 7th reply] but basically in the ODYSSEY: Circe holding his friends/crew as hostage and only letting them free when Odysseus agreed to sleep w/her ISN'T actually CONSENSUAL so I don't qualify it as cheating) so in the EPIC universe the Teleology cannot be canon (because in the Teleology Ody is accidentally killed by his illegitimate son). BUT I made this comment well before I knew how much EPIC would stray from the Odyssey's and Greek mythology canon. EDIT #2 CHRISTMAS 2024, SPOILERS FOR THE LAST SONG IN THE LAST SAGA THE MARRIAGE BED PART MADE THE CUT!!!!!!!! ITS OFFICIALLY CANON IN EPIC, ONLY USED FOR A DIFFERENT PURPOSE 😭 I'M SO GLAD JAY KEPT IT IN!!!
He isn't just upset. He rants for a paragraph or two about the bed and the general vibe of that scene is: HOW IN THE FLYING FUCK DID YOU MOVE THE GODSDAMNED BED?.
YES! the helmet showing him losing his humainty becoming the very thing he's trying to protect his family from, goddam gigi hitting it out of the park!
Gigi this was amazing! I absolutely love it! The flashback. The tree. Penelope and ten-year-old Telemachus. The flash of Ody being a monster. Everyone seeing Odysseus about to drop Asyanax from the balcony as the battle comes to a close. It's amazing!
ok i think an AMAZING detail that’s going unnoticed is the black tree growing around the baby! if i’m right, that symbolizes how the act of killing the infant would only be the first of many acts ody commits, until he eventually loses all his morals and would do anything to see his son and wife. which is. wow. such a cool and heartbreaking detail 😭.
Interesting take! I read it as "if you don't nip this in the bud, this child will grow into a force you won't be able to stop anymore." Notice how throughout all of Epic, despite the guilt he feels over it, Odysseus is never taken to task/suffered for killing the baby. He's only punished for showing mercy to beings he shouldn't.
I like how the future of the child is this really dangerous Beast like man but still has features that show he is human while main character his monster is just a black void lacking any similarity to a human just a suit of armor showing that his monster brings him too far
That tree growth was such an intriguing way to portray Odysseus's way back to his life (seen through the window) becoming obscured by Asyntax (the baby) growing up, yet it was strangely elegant at the same time? It was almost a connection to the olive trees that comprise Odysseus's bed, like there's a shared motivation to return to loved ones in that revenge.
IS THE DETAIL OF PENELOPE WEAVING AT 1:34 BECAUSE THATS HOW SHE SPENT HER TIME TRICKING THE SUITORS WHILE ODYSSEUS WAS GONE?? omg i love this so much 😭😭
...now I don't want to see it on stage. Now I want to see all the animatics compiled into a whole animated musical by you and keep it under my eyelids till the die I die. Such a good wooooork. Every next installment is somehow better than the rest and makes the whole set elevated.
Personally my interpretation of why he does that is because if he held Astyanax like a normal baby he wouldn’t have the heart to truly drop him, so instead he just holds him by the blanket to make himself able to do it
oh my goodness the animatic gave me chills! It was beautiful yet haunting the way you showed Odysseus's struggle and decision just before the baby gets dropped
I love how you made the braches of the tree for a skull to signify the baby's fate, it was beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. I think what really broke me though was the end where baby's face got more concerned as Odyseuss was holding him over the ledge
This is so good. Penelope looks so regal, I absolutely adore her design. The tree growing out of/around the baby >>>>>; I also love a good mirror shot. Thank you for sharing this with us, it was an absolute joy to watch 😊
I like how Odysseus initially has his eyes closed when he sings "Close your eyes and spare yourself the view." It's like he's trying to spare himself as much as he wants to spare the child. Then he opens his eyes and immediately backtracks, remembering how badly he does not want to do this.
No one talks about the double meaning in “When does a candle become a blaze?” Meaning that it could be him or the infant, who is harmless as it seems, but when he grows up, he becomes the ‘Blaze’ from the harmless ‘Candle’
look, I love this traumatizing masterpiece, but the fact that right after that trauma of him dropping Astyanax there's a cute little popping sound effect killed me. And I loved it btw, almost cried but I loved it
*sniffle* This was the best depiction of this song I have ever seen. This is my favorite song in this Saga. I really loved how it showed the inner turmoil that Odysseus went through and how much it pained him to have to kill the little boy. It brought me to tears, I absolutely love this
0:58 ok but the light from the war going on out side just shows how odysseus is thinking in a war like way when he is going to kill hectors son ( that’s just really good visual story telling)
Funny enough, this is the second version of how Astyanax dies. In the first, it's Neoptolemus who kills the child. Though, the Greeks had this weird thought process for the Neoptolemus version of the myth, namely in the fact that with some of the paintings on their vases, which is basically ancient fanart, Neoptolemus beats Priam, the last king of Troy, to death with Astyanax's dead body.
Oh, this is so gorgeous. The way you animated their expressions was incredible. The way Odysseus looked at the baby while remembering his own son was so fond, so loving and kind. I really liked that Odysseus had to put on his helmet, had to turn himself back into a soldier so that he could do this monstrous deed, as he (the man) could not. Just wow.
I absolutely LOVE the duality that you have animated into this. When Odysseus covers the child's eyes and closes his own while he says "Close your eyes and spare yourself the view", he's obviously not wanting the kid to see but he also doesn't want to witness it himself. Then again when he sings "But when does a man become a monster?" he sees the monster in both himself and the child. Because either way if he goes through with it or not one of them is going to become the monster. This is literally my favorite animatic of this song!
I HAVE NO WORDS TO DESCRIBE HOW INCREDIBLE THIS ANIMATIC IS!!! The flashback to Odysseus leaving home and to his time with Penelope, the flashes of the "monster" in Odysseus' reflection, the dark three, it even looked like big horns when Odysseus moved in front of the cradle (don't know if that was intentional, but looks amazing regardless) TT THE FEELS 😭😭😭 Odysseus dropping Astyanax with everyone looking, the baby's expressions AAAAAA This was incredible 👏🥲❤️
Soooo that was amazing. But why do I feel like you enjoy making us cry? I swear the only reason I'm holding back my tears is because I am in the subway. The animatic was gorgeous, I loved the details, especially the bed!
1:34 : I love how you cant see any details on Telemachus's face.. when Odysseus left, he was just a baby, so it's a nice little detail to remember that Ody doesnt know what Telemachus looks like.
The baby is absolutely cute and I wish I could enter the scene and rescue him :'( I like how you expressed Ody's humane side and ruthless side by helmet on-off. And also how the other Greek commanders witness Odysseus on the high wall. This is the tragedy of war....
Imagine what is going through their heads. Their Captain and leader, who was singing about his child mere minutes ago, is now about to kill one for no apparent reason
It was beautifully told. I loved the internal conflict between duty, love, fear and consequences. It is those conflicts that makes our life difficult because no one wants to make a bad choice for oneself, the one they love or for others. Yet when we come to the crossroad there is no turning back and we have to weight our choices to move on. I remember playing witcher 3 and being so frustrated that no choices were "good", there was always a consequence to it even if you thought it was the best thing to do at first. But it also was echoing deep down on how important it is to understand that our actions have consequences, we tend to not want to suffer the burden of complicate decision but to me an adult that shoulder his choice is a true adult.

Odysseus picking up Astyanax and walking to the wall's edge... past the family portrait and with a tear on his cheek no less... WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME?!?!? 😭😭😭 Odysseus' men about to watch him do the deed The little expressions of worry on Astyanax's face as he doesn't really know what's going on... my heart 😢😢😢 THE CLOSE-UP OF ASTYANAX RIGHT BEFORE THE END... 💔💔💔💔💔💔 The animation of Odysseus'face (I didn't expect you to animate the entire phrase on his face). god this one never fails to make me tear up :') the tree sprouting out of the bed, the flash of Odysseus as a monster in the mirror, the EXPRESSIONS and the one last look of the baby at the viewer...absolutely gutting.
Ough the roots growing from the baby as his resolve grows and the roots look like a smiling face and then his shadow growing as the soldiers look at him on the wall! Thanks for making this!
The way you drew their olive-tree bed has me giggling and cackling at the same time tbh xD. I'm just, thinking of some mornings where either one of them wakes up with a leaf in their mouth lol. Wonderful work! You really added a lot of symbolism to the scene, especially with Odysseus's reflection talking on a more monstrous appearance. One bit of criticism: at the end, when we see a close up of baby Astyanax's worried face, I think we should've seen the beginning of him being dropped to his death; because as is, it looks a little unclear on whether the baby was dropped. But maybe that was your artistic choice, idk. Still, this is an amazing work of art. Keep up the work.
Thank you for the criticism! There were actually a lot of attempts of doing the drop, but I didn't think none of them were looking dramatic or holding a lot of weight (they were looking a little silly too lol) so I decided to just end it on the just a man verse

How you animated the child to make it even WORSE for US AS THE VIEWER HOW DARE YOU.

This animatic is amazing! The time and effort put into this really shows and it's just so beautiful I hope you keep creating! Ok, I've always listened to just this song and Loved it. But I just recently listened to the horse and the infant and damn oh this song just hits so much harder.

In Greek mythology, the Greeks feared that if Hector's infant son, Astyanax, lived to manhood, he would rebuild Troy and avenge Hector. It was decided that he would be thrown off of walls of Troy, but Odysseus wasn't the one who committed the deed. It was Achilles' son, Neoptolemus. Overall, I thought this was a great animatic.
The way you drew Astyanax expression before Odysseus dropped him hurts ahh
I literally wanted to cry 😭

That tracks.
i interpreted that in two ways: one is his genuine desire for the baby to suffer as less as possible (like the baby not seeing what was supposed to be the incoming stab), and the other was for himself, basically making the baby faceless so his conscience doesn't eat at him
OHOHOHO THIS WAS DELICIOUSLY PAINFUL
The visuals were stunning, I especially adored the tree growing out of the baby… what a great callback to both Odysseus and Penelope’s olive tree (and the fact that he was basically destroying someone else’s) and the lyrics that the baby “will grow an avenger”
Yoo so glad someone noticed that! This tree symbolism was mostly for myself since I didn't think anyone would get, so tysm for noticing :D
ikr!! I love the tree symbolism
How do we feel about this after “would you fall in love with me again”?
I love the look of the baby when he's about to be thrown off.. like he knows what will happen. Usually animatics make them oblivious to whats about to happen (which is equally hearthwrenching) but for there to be a feeling that he knows something is wrong.. uff
Amazing animatic as always
sorry but for some reason your comment made me think of him throwing the baby like a baseball
@@alexanderberry1665Lion King style, lol
I love love LOVE the way you portray Odysseus! He's just so tired, desperate to go home, and I was literally gasping when I saw his younger self fade back to the present. Huge props, this made me cry buckets
His crew looks so shocked when they realize hes at the window and it breaks my heart
The "close your eyes and spare yourself the view... How could I hurt you?" made me tear up omg
The fact that he drops the child instead of more “painless” methods bc he can’t bring himself to directly do it is KILLING ME
I feel like the line “when does a man become a monster” has a double meaning.

LONG OVERDUE EDIT #1 (sorry it took a year):
the ‘sequel’ is called the Teleology, ALTHOUGH it was made WAY AFTER THE ODYSSEY and is by a DIFFERENT AUTHOR SO IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE CONSIDERED CANON IN HOMER’S UNIVERSE.
EDIT #2 CHRISTMAS 2024, SPOILERS FOR THE LAST SONG IN THE LAST SAGA
THE MARRIAGE BED PART MADE THE CUT!!!!!!!! ITS OFFICIALLY CANON IN EPIC, ONLY USED FOR A DIFFERENT PURPOSE 😭 I'M SO GLAD JAY KEPT IT IN!!!
Pen: Oh btw I moved our bed
Oddy: I-- wh-- HOW?!?
he also wouldn't shut up abt his bed in the Song of Achilles
He isn't just upset. He rants for a paragraph or two about the bed and the general vibe of that scene is: HOW IN THE FLYING FUCK DID YOU MOVE THE GODSDAMNED BED?.
@@akumasstorytime3910 oh yeah I remember that part 😂
@@iliketea1427 it's my favorite scene in the Odyssey.
YES! the helmet showing him losing his humainty becoming the very thing he's trying to protect his family from, goddam gigi hitting it out of the park!
OH GOD YOU'RE THE FIRST ONE TO HAVE THE BABY ACTUALLY NOTICE AND RESPOND TO THE DANGER HE'S IN AT THE END MY HEART
I’m way too attached to a dead mythical baby
In some telling of the story it is ambiguous if the baby dies and some even say he lived
Omg seeing the baby looking down, so innocent and unknowing, made me tear up so bad. THE FEELSSSSS
I like how the future of the child is this really dangerous Beast like man but still has features that show he is human
while main character his monster is just a black void lacking any similarity to a human just a suit of armor showing that his monster brings him too far
What?
Thats not accurate to the storw
That tree growth was such an intriguing way to portray Odysseus's way back to his life (seen through the window) becoming obscured by Asyntax (the baby) growing up, yet it was strangely elegant at the same time? It was almost a connection to the olive trees that comprise Odysseus's bed, like there's a shared motivation to return to loved ones in that revenge.
IS THE DETAIL OF PENELOPE WEAVING AT 1:34 BECAUSE THATS HOW SHE SPENT HER TIME TRICKING THE SUITORS WHILE ODYSSEUS WAS GONE?? omg i love this so much 😭😭
honestly i feel like not showing him drop the baby is more powerful than otherwise like that actually made me sad
Did you see the one gigi made where The Horse and the Infant and Just a Man are together? The end... I think is even more powerful.
...now I don't want to see it on stage. Now I want to see all the animatics compiled into a whole animated musical by you and keep it under my eyelids till the die I die. Such a good wooooork. Every next installment is somehow better than the rest and makes the whole set elevated.
CURRENTLY CRYING BUT ASIDE FROM THAT, THE WAY ODYSSEUS GRABS THE BABY LIKE A BAG OF GROCERIES IS SENDING ME 😭😭😭
And the shot of it during the meteor line adds to to
Personally my interpretation of why he does that is because if he held Astyanax like a normal baby he wouldn’t have the heart to truly drop him, so instead he just holds him by the blanket to make himself able to do it
oh my goodness the animatic gave me chills! It was beautiful yet haunting the way you showed Odysseus's struggle and decision just before the baby gets dropped
You've managed to make this song with Odysseus dropping Hector's son more tragic and haunting... Incredible work.
A toast to another great animatic by a great artist. 🥂🥂🥂 Also a moment of silence for baby Astyanax 👶💔👶💔👶💔
yes
in some stories he survives, look it up its kind of amazing
I love how you made the braches of the tree for a skull to signify the baby's fate, it was beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time.
I think what really broke me though was the end where baby's face got more concerned as Odyseuss was holding him over the ledge
This is so good. Penelope looks so regal, I absolutely adore her design. The tree growing out of/around the baby >>>>>; I also love a good mirror shot. Thank you for sharing this with us, it was an absolute joy to watch 😊
2:28 that little frown actually shattered my heart
The last "I'm just a man" at 2:30 is just too good
I like how Odysseus initially has his eyes closed when he sings "Close your eyes and spare yourself the view." It's like he's trying to spare himself as much as he wants to spare the child.
Oh my god, the baby is so cute, I was dying inside everytime I saw him, especially at the end looking down and being scared :'( Baby Asyanax noooo!
look, I love this traumatizing masterpiece, but the fact that right after that trauma of him dropping Astyanax there's a cute little popping sound effect killed me. And I loved it btw, almost cried but I loved it
*sniffle* This was the best depiction of this song I have ever seen. This is my favorite song in this Saga. I really loved how it showed the inner turmoil that Odysseus went through and how much it pained him to have to kill the little boy. It brought me to tears, I absolutely love this
0:32 damnit he did the :3 stop hitting me feels man
0:58 ok but the light from the war going on out side just shows how odysseus is thinking in a war like way when he is going to kill hectors son ( that’s just really good visual story telling)
I love the way Odysseus sings in the first half to the baby- almost like he’s soothing him like a lullaby.
The flashback to Odysseus leaving home and to his time with Penelope, the flashes of the "monster" in Odysseus' reflection, the dark three, it even looked like big horns when Odysseus moved in front of the cradle (don't know if that was intentional, but looks amazing regardless) TT
THE FEELS 😭😭😭
Odysseus dropping Astyanax with everyone looking, the baby's expressions AAAAAA
This was incredible 👏🥲❤️
Soooo that was amazing. But why do I feel like you enjoy making us cry? I swear the only reason I'm holding back my tears is because I am in the subway. The animatic was gorgeous, I loved the details, especially the bed!
1:34 : I love how you cant see any details on Telemachus's face.. when Odysseus left, he was just a baby, so it's a nice little detail to remember that Ody doesnt know what Telemachus looks like.
That moment he looked in the mirror and his reflection changed... That was a punch to the gut
Woaaaah 😢 every scene is perfect, the baby transition just hurts (also the olive bed 😭) and the end!! Chilling
The baby is absolutely cute and I wish I could enter the scene and rescue him :'( I like how you expressed Ody's humane side and ruthless side by helmet on-off. And also how the other Greek commanders witness Odysseus on the high wall. This is the tragedy of war....
By hades I've imagined this song a thousand different ways but his army looking up at him committing this horrific act just hits different
I... am... SPEECHLESS. 😮
(And now to the part of the program where I list EVERYTHING that's FIRE 🔥 in this animatic)
Odysseus holding baby Astyanax in his arms (the smiles on their faces too) so cute 🥺
The first Penelope and Telemachus flashback was so adorable 🥰 (Penelope's a ✨QUEEN✨)
Odysseus covering Astyanax's eyes and closing his own when trying to stab him... and then hesitating... (You know it's coming but you don't want it to 😢)
The moral conflict Odysseus goes through is just *chef's kiss* in this animatic 👏👏👏
ANOTHER FLASHBACK of Odysseus and Penelope together. (With the OLIVE TREE BED?! Are you kidding me?!)
The transition from the Trojan horse to Penelope and Telemachus at the loom is so smooth! (Also the fact that you drew Telemachus at ten while Penelope's weaving the shroud was PERFECT 👍)
The flash of monstrous Astyanax as the tipping point for Odysseus' decision was impeccable
The black tree growing out of Astyanax symbolizing everything that he would become... wow
Odysseus' monstrous reflection in the mirror foreshadowing everything he would go through in his journey was perfect.
Odysseus picking up Astyanax and walking to the wall's edge... past the family portrait and with a tear on his cheek no less... WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME?!?!? 😭😭😭
Odysseus' men about to watch him do the deed
The little expressions of worry on Astyanax's face as he doesn't really know what's going on... my heart 😢😢😢
THE CLOSE-UP OF ASTYANAX RIGHT BEFORE THE END... 💔💔💔💔💔💔
The animation of Odysseus'face (I didn't expect you to animate the entire phrase on his face). Completely adds to the emotional gravity of it all
My heart is now eternally broken. Well done. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
god this one never fails to make me tear up :') the tree sprouting out of the bed, the flash of Odysseus as a monster in the mirror, the EXPRESSIONS and the one last look of the baby at the viewer...absolutely gutting.
Gosh the feels ToT. The transitions in 1:33, where Odysseus holds his helmet, to then a sunrise colored ng and then Trojan horse melting, making way for Penelope and her loom with Telemachus has me- AHHHHH EVERY SHOT IS SO GOOD
Edit: 2:09 that family tapestry has me in tears
@@gigi2820 you could've had it where when he finished saying 'just a man' he lifts his hand up and its empty, so not actually showing the baby dropping but giving the implication. Anyway!!! its perfect as it is the details are amazing, well done :DD
Yeah I was heavily waiting for the implication of Odysseus letting go of the cloth
The foreshadowing for Monster makes me so mad I love it
Going all the way and animating the lip flaps on the final “just a man” really hits HARD. Fantastic work
I cried….the emotions hit me so much harder than I expected 😭😭💔 amazing animation ❤
I absolutely love the way you drew Penelope, the whole animatic is wonderful but you made her look absolutely gorgeous and perfect!!!!
I’ve been following this account since I’ve found the Epic saga, and I must say that
THIS ABSOLUTELY DESTROYED ME!!!! THE CONTEXT ALREADY IS SO DEVASTATING I JUST- GAH I CANT!!!!! Keep up the amazing work! I can’t wait to see what you have planned for the other songs in the Troy and Cyclops Arc!!!!
Look, ive listened to hundreds of musical tracks before. I love them. Each song from Epic I listen to is my new favorite.
But this one? The section with his Mother is not only one of the best musical song segenents ive heard, but its one of the most evocative and beautoful peices of music Ive ever heard. The fact your (actual) Mum sang with you i think adds layers to this that tao into something pat music. Something universal.
Something beautiful.
Thank you for creating it.
I especially love that he removes his helmet to hold Astyanax because Hector took of his helmet because it would scare him :(
“ thanks for watching! “ GIGI IM HAVING A BREAKDOWN BECAUSE OF THIS
How… how dare you… this is… this is sick, and evil, and twisted. I cried so much. How dare you make that toddle so realistic and sweet and showing fear. How could you ruin my day, no, my YEAR with this immaculate piece of art. I’m subscribed now. I’m addicted to your animations that rival Pixar in beauty and emotion. The framework, the colors, the simplicity… you are a true artist.
Depicting their bed as the trees like it does in the book shows how much effort this person put into this animation
Out of all the animatics I've seen portraying this scene with this song yours was the only one that as actually made me shed a tear. The camera shots you did of Odyssey and the child were so well done and all the extra details you added with Penelope, Telemachus, the visions and that one scene with the tree sprouting a dark omen WERE ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!! You captured everything so perfectly. The smile that he gave Odysseus and him shedding a single tear tore me apart 😢
(I hope that if this musical ever gets an animated series that your put on the team you def deserve it along with many more ❤)
I feel so bad for astyanax he's just a baby and got caught in all cause aphrodite wanted to win some random beauty contest
this has so much emotion it actually made me shed tears, which is uncommon for myself.
thank you for being such a great artist.
Gahhhh, the fact that you gave the baby so much expression in these two animatics makes this hurt so much more! ;;;; Wonderful job!!
Listening to this song and now watching this animatic gave me very similar imagery of his armor by a large imposing tree. I have cried everytime I have seen this.
Yeeeesssss! Finally another person who yeeted Astyanax
But all serious now, thank you for this experience your animatics truly are always incredible
Hi! I love your animatics btw.
I watched this in class, and now I'm crying. Beautiful. I've never cried this quickly.
THE OLIVE BRANCH TREE THAT ODY MADE AS A MARRIAGE GIFT 😭😭😭
Me in the final: Do not cry children, probably the baby is fine, was rescued at the end, Only they did not show it ":D
I love the animation is my favourite song of the musical and this is my favourite animatic of this. The tree is perfect!
Come on, it was just a baby! My heart hurts right now, i'm not even lying when I say ' I cried a lot.' Gigi, you are so incredibly talented, by far one of my favorite animators!
Your skills at storytelling are genuinely incredible. I can see Odysseus' train of thought in every frame.
WHO ALLOWED THIS TO BE SO GOOD?!
This is actually such a beautiful song, I'm so happy this series exists
I cannot cope I cannot survive....the pain you have caused me.......I am so impressed by this and all your other work, too. Your character designs, all the symbolism you use throughout, your dedication to the point of making animatics for unreleased songs--we are so lucky that you share them with us. Thank you for that! :D
other solders: why would you drop the baby
Odysseus: the gods told me to do it I swear
Lmao
Contributing to the hype that is preceding this premiere
I'm sitting here suffering and then the cartoony little pops at the end come out of nowhere to murder me
I think literally the only thing that could have made this more gut-wrenching would have been Astyanax smiling at Osysseus in the very last frames. That would have broken me for good
Just a Man is probably my favourite song from Epic and oh boy when your premier dropped I was feral bouncing off the walls and I was not disappointed this is so GOOD!
Edit: Just rewatched it for the fifteenth time and I somehow hadn’t noticed the tapestry of Hector and Astyanax so that was a punch in the gut.
It's crazy how good your animation is for an animatic. I'm so used to still frames constantly. I also like how you use the actual interpretation of what occurred, aka, the story in which Odysseus throws the child off the tower. How you animated the child to make it even WORSE for US AS THE VIEWER HOW DARE YOU.
I have no idea about this whole thing about this WHOLE thing because I’ve only seen this and the one before it, but what I ABSOLUTELY know I can say is that this animation is- like- the greatest thing I’ve seen in a while :)
THE WAY HE FIRST HOLDS THE BABY LIKE HOW YOU SHOULD BUT THEN HE ENDS UP HOLDING HIM IMPROPERLY LIKE OTHERWISE HE WONT BE ABLE TO GONTJROUGH WITH IT UGHHFGGHH
I love how “when does a man become a monster?” applies to the baby as well. As the dark tree grows from the baby, resembling a skull, it’s hard to believe such an innocent thing could become that. It truly is a question of when does an innocent human being, become a monster?
This animatic is amazing! The time and effort put into this really shows and it's just so beautiful I hope you keep creating!
Ok, I've always listened to just this song and Loved it. But I just recently listened to the horse and the infant and damn oh this song just hits so much harder.
the animation is amazing!! but im crying rn 😭😭😭 the "just a man" at the end was so smooth! ur so cool and epic ❤️❤️‼️‼️
I was okay just listening to the song, but with the added animation and the visuals - i`m sitting here literal tears running down my face
GIGI HOW COULD YOU MAKE ME CRY LIKE THIS OMG THIS WAS SO GOOD BUT SO PAINFUL-EVERYTHING about this was absolutely amazing, I loved watching very second of it. Although I’m about to cry rn, this art is spectacular!!! :DDD
I don't get it why y'all crying I'm stupid
In Greek mythology, the Greeks feared that if Hector's infant son, Astyanax, lived to manhood, he would rebuild Troy and avenge Hector. It was decided that he would be thrown off of walls of Troy, but Odysseus wasn't the one who committed the deed. It was Achilles' son, Neoptolemus. Overall, I thought this was a great animatic. Keep up the great work, gigi!
