This grinder puts out the most consistent grinds i have ever witnessed in a grinder, the people complaining about the button are lame, this grinder is amazing the sound is superb, easy to clean, an integral part of the brew recipe with my moccamaster (setting 4.5) and French press brews (setting 6) FTW - everyone can afford this grinder, it pays for itself.
Most people seem to believe this is a Eureka Filtro essentially under the skin. I started with the Filtro and used it for about two years before upgrading to the Eureka Brew Pro. The Brew Pro doesn't require you to hold in the button to grind, but that never really bothered me that much since I was just making one pot of coffee most mornings. The Filtro was trouble free, and since I mostly like Sumatra beans that aren't particularly oily, I didn't have to take it apart to do a deep clean in two years of use. I don't like the look of this Moccamaster grinder, but if it is a collaboration with Eureka, and is a Filtro essentially under the skin, it's a great and reliable grinder for brew coffee grinding.
Just received my grinder today and has an exorbitant amount of retention. There was retention in the hopper, retention in the grinder and retention in the exit shoot. I was really hoping to stop having to water my beans after coming from a fellow ode gen 1. The grinder itself is high quality and grinds great. Huge retention problem, much worse than the fellow ode gen 1.
Good to see this review. The switch is absolutely absurd. I am often multitasking in the AM like filling up water, wetting paper cone, etc while grinding. Moccamaster - if you want me to buy this dealbreaker here!! Make my morning easier, not harder. Love the look and I’m sure it will be sturdy. I am curious how even it grinds, how loud it is, etc??? How does it compare in taste, fines and TDS when compared to an Encore or Fellow? That is the video I want to see!!
I am not normally critical of these reviews but I can’t help but wonder why you did not test this grinder for consistency/size/quality of grind. After all….it’s a grinder.
If I were to guess, I'd say this is the Eureka Mignon Perfetto. It's the only Eureka filter grinder that has an adjustment knob that hits all of the grind sizes in one revolution. (Edit): I was wrong. The Perfetto has a 55mm burr. The KM5 has a 50mm burr. However, it does have a 310 watt motor that is hard to come by in the U.S. market. Must be why it is so heavy and has quite the kick. I can't wait to get mine.
Somewhere else i saw that the finest grind on this could actually be ok for espresso? I have an express impress which has its own grinder but in case it breaks I want a good drip grinder that can also function as a backup for espresso. Thinking about the Baratza Encore ESP but know that is conical. Can someone say if they think flat burrs are indeed better for drip? Many say flat is good for clarity and conical for body?
Appreciate the review! Would love to see a comparative taste test at different grind settings. It looks like it's built like a tank plus it's got a 5 year warranty. How well does it single dose (though I don't think MM intended it to be used that way)? It obviously would look great next to your Moccamaster coffee maker.
Technivorm Moccamaster Director of Sales Will Etherington said, “The KM5 has very low grind retention and is, therefore, a good grinder for single-dose grinding.”
Cool review! I am looking for a grinder which does both Brewed (Filter) Coffee and for Espresso ? as next to my Moccamaster I'd like to buy an Espresso machine. Which Grinder would you suggest which does both ? you mention it's not for Espresso 00:58
Depends on your budget. Maybe Baratza Encore ESP? Designed to have that flexibility for $199. The real connoisseur types have multiple grinders for different purposes. I am also looking for one that does everything.
I have a Rancilio Rocky grinder and it has a switch like this. The weight of the Rocky makes it secure and not move. Even has the “1 bean holder” feature haha. Not worth me changing, as the Rocky can handle espresso too.
Solid early product review. Good usable info and some good perspective. One suggestion, and I hate to be that guy, but you might be surprised how many times you used the word “actual” and I can’t think of a time that it was necessary. That said, keep up the good work!
Yeah, my Baratza Encore died and I'd love to go back to freshly ground AND yeah, it'd look cool next to the Moccamaster that has been great. The comments here DO bring out valid points: Switch would bug me, retention etc. I guess I'll consider the new Ode. While not architecturally matching, it may be a better way to drop $300+ Heck the Baratza didn't care that it was next to the Moccamaster :-)
No espresso grind? Why even make a grinder then? My KitchenAid coffee burr grinder dial from flour like espresso grind to filtered coffee all for $200. Absolutely awesome machine. Highly recommend over this grinder. Seriously.
If this was priced equivalent to the Baratza Encore, it would have been an instant buy for so many. Regardless a solid product and a great review as always!
This Moccamaster grinder has an all metal direct drive motor with a metal chassis from top to bottom and no plastic to be found. There's just no comparison to quality between the two. Plus, this grinder doesn't sound like a dying goat while it's grinding a dose of beans.
That Baratza is junk. I bought it and the stupid top wouldn’t clip or turn without falling off. I tried to figure out what it was the rubber piece would come off. I think $300 is high, but I much rather spend that much for a high quality item than a Chinese made disposable item.
I respect the fact that it doesn't grind espresso. After all, it's for the Moccamaster. But needing to hold the button down while you grind the coffee? If you could just pick a # of cups and have the KM grind it, I would get this for sure. One of my pet peeves about my current grinder is that it grinds 6oz cups and the Moccamaster brews 4oz cups so I have to do a little mental math when I grind. I was really hoping this grinder would solve this for me, but instead I would need to measure the beans each time (how? on a kitchen scale? I just want my coffee) and then hold down the button. Yeesh.
a little late to the party, but my thoughts are that you could measure your beans once on a scale using the collection cup from the km5, see what line it ends up at and then you would have a visual method going forward from there, no more need to weigh.
Hello and many greetings from Germany, nice video that made me buy the mill. Since I live in Germany, there was no point in buying from you - which I would have liked to do otherwise. 😄
Don't see the point of holding the button down. Most comparable grinders have freedom of choice, where it grinds itself after starting. Weakly rated by Technivorm. This grinder is not considered for purchase.
Ya who the hell thought it was a good idea to 1. Make you hold down the switch 2. have no way of knowing how much coffee you are grinding. Im a huge moccamaster fan but this grinder is ridiculous

Well, it looks very Moccamaster like. Price is a bit steep, it looks like the eureka line in terms of burr size and burr adjustment.

Serious ? You make a review of the grinder, but don't show how it grinds ? I would like to know how loud he is 🤷🏻♂️
Most important feature is the sound… still looking for a grinder with great sound. Any recommendations out there?
Not sure I want to hold the switch while grinding, otherwise looks like an excellent grinder.
This feels like a lot like the Eureka filtro. From the burrs, rpm, motor and the fact you have to hold the button down.
I see you gave Ode 2 a favorable review as well. Would recommend the KM5 over the Ode 2 for use with a Moccamaster?
Appreciate the review. I've been going back and forth between a new grinder and the Fellow Ode was at the top of my list. This is helpful.

I have the moccamaster coffee brewer. Do you recommend their grinder or the ODE gen 2 grinder?

So if I get this right, you need to remove 4 screws to clean this thing inside? How often will you need to do this?
There is an unanswered question: What micron range does it cover? Since it is intended for filter brewing I bet it wont grind as fine as 200 microns.
Do you think they will release this in the Stone Grey soon?
I have a Rancilio Rocky grinder and it has a switch like this. The weight of the Rocky makes it secure and not move. Even has the “1 bean holder” feature haha. Not worth me changing, as the Rocky can handle espresso too.
How is the sound compared to the Ode 2?
quieter
Per another commenter, this is looks like a Eureka Filtro with some aesthetics to match their brewer. Not a bad move actually.
Not the same wattage
@@2Amigos805Yes it is. 310w, same as the Filtro.
@@kuppenbender1 negative. 210 vs 310
Did they make custom burrs or are these an existing set they chose for the grinder?
Just speculation, but it looks like the Eureka Filtro, 50mm Pro filter burrs. Eureka came out with them last year.
Cannot confirm but they do look like the Eureka Pro Burrs.

What I can think of is this has flat burrs which some think are better for drip than conical.
New?This has Eureka Mignon Filtro parts same 310w motor and 50 mm flat burrs and so on.And yes more much more expansive then the Eureka...
Wish it had a timer...
We are in the works of installing a SPSM (non-momentary) switch to ours. If it's feasible, we will offer it as a service for owners.
Nice looking grinder! I wish the price point was a bit lower. That grinding receptacle looks like it could cause some static issues.
If this grinder is modeled after the Eureka Mignon Brew Pro, this price point is an absolute bargain.
Seniors can’t hold that for 30 seconds.😮
If this was priced equivalent to the Baratza Encore, it would have been an instant buy for so many. Regardless a solid product and a great review as always!

Sounds funny, but I would have liked you to actually grind something.
One factor in my decision is decibels and ... pitch.
