It's a shame that 'Auntie Liz's' cookbook Makan has been removed for sale by her publisher because it turns out she has plagiarised lots of other authors. Some of it is literally copied word for word. I can't support someone who is so happy to steal other people's hard work.

If they were talking about cooking those candle nuts...it sounds like a not-so-fun death lol we have those in our backyard for some reason and I thought they were macadamia nuts. Nope. After eating just 4 raw and my husband eating 2 raw, we had to go to the ER. Twas not a fun night. Always make sure those bloody things are thoroughly cooked to ensure they are safe for consumption! • @foxbatt

Live and die by the sword, live and die by the burn :) - however what's perhaps a more BURNING question is the Catch 22 - does Uncle Roger take down this video to protect frequent collaborator Auntie Liz from the heat from the alleged plagiarism BUT THEN forego the SUBSTANTIAL short-term ad revenue, publicity and engagement metrics from alleged plagiarism for Makan going viral globally with video links from numerous online news outlets reporting the alleged plagiarism? :) How about those lovely sweet sweet sweet high CPM UK / Singapore impressions during the leadup to Singles Day / Thanksgiving / Black Friday / Christmas?
Curious about the viewpoint of Advertisers/Agencies/Brand Managers/Media Buyers and planners, how does controversy affect engagement, Return on Ad Spend (RoAS) bearing in mind brand identity, safety and equity and the myriad range of ad objectives in this case? Is this another case where organic reach of channels with a large, diverse subscriber base becomes a double-edged sword? How does the calculus work in terms of the current/future revenue/engagement levels on this vid /the whole channel, advertisers/agencies' perception of the channel vis a vis perceived proximity between Mr Ng and Ms Haigh?
Will taking down the video (and the associated comments) buy enough time for the news cycle to move on to the next shiny/shocking/ scintillating object or will this video's removal result in an even stronger backlash and extend/expand negative coverage? Someone somewhere is probably already running an A/B test, designing an FGD to check :)

When things were at their very worst:
2 Suns, Cross in the sky, 2 comets will collide = don`t be afraid - repent, accept Lord`s Hand of Mercy.
Scientists will say it was a global illusion.
Beware - Jesus will never walk in flesh again.
After WW3 - rise of the “ man of peace“ from the East = Antichrist - the most powerful, popular, charismatic and influential leader of all time. Many miracles will be attributed to him. He will imitate Jesus in every conceivable way.
Don`t trust „pope“ Francis = the False Prophet
      - will seem to rise from the dead
      - will unite all Christian Churches and all Religions as one.
One World Religion = the seat of the Antichrist.
Benedict XVI is the last true pope - will be accused of a crime of which he is totally innocent.
"The time for the schism in the Church is almost here and you must get prepared now"
"Arab uprising will spark global unrest - Italy will trigger fall out"
      The Book of Truth.

To Robert P asking for proof/data about plagiarism, here you go:
From a Facebook post by Daryl Lim Wei Jie
I came across a post by Sharon Wee, author of the cookbook and memoir "Growing Up in a Nonya Kitchen" (Singapore, 2012), stating that some recipes and content from the book had been copied or paraphrased in Elizabeth Haigh's cookbook, "Makan" (London, 2021). Apparently "Makan" has been withdrawn from publication. I found this intriguing and also a bit worrying: Haigh is a much-feted chef and celebrity who has earned a Michelin star and even appeared on the famous "Uncle Roger" videos. She has also made her name through touting her connections to Singapore and her roots here. I decided to get hold of both books to conduct a comparison, and ascertain the truth myself. What I found was rather disturbing: it seems there are parallels not only in the recipes, but also in the structure of the cookbook and perhaps most distressingly, allegedly personal recollections.
The following images and comparisons will demonstrate my point. There are many other instances which I spotted, but I felt myself becoming a bit disgusted, especially when it seemed the memory of someone else's mother was being somewhat appropriated. To date, I haven't seen a statement from Elizabeth Haigh or the publisher, Bloomsbury Absolute, and I do hope to see one.
(I should say I have no connection to Sharon Wee or Elizabeth Haigh, except that I used to be a casual fan of the latter, having seen her in the "Uncle Roger" videos. Sharon's post is here: facebook.com/sharon.wee.96/posts/10158683619643391.)
Postscript - a list of some further instances of copying:
Wee: “My mother, like many of her friends, placed their most frequently used condiments and ingredients within easy access while they cooked. That often meant a plastic tray . . . where there were small bottles of soy sauces, sesame oil, and jars of minced garlic, salt and sugar. In the past there would also have been a metal container to hold recycled cooking oil.”
Haigh: “My mother . . . kept her most frequently used condiments and ingredients within easy reach of where she cooked. That often meant a plastic tray full of little jars of oils, crispy-fried shallots or garlic, crushed garlic, salt and sugar. There was also usually an old metal pot for recycled or discarded frying oil.”
Wee: Ginger is thought to ‘pukol angin’ (beat the toxic gases and dampness out of you to relieve aches and pains). Hence, post-natal mothers were given lots of ginger to ‘beat the wind.’ In my case, a backache, especially in the winter, was often remedied with a knob of ginger, with the sliced surface dipped in brandy. The brandied ginger was used to rub my back and it left red streak marks, indicating the wind in my flesh and bones. It always worked.
The ginger flavour is strongest just beneath its skin. Therefore, leave the skin on to get the most of the flavour.”
Haigh: “Ginger is thought to have healing properties - pukol angin (to beat the toxic gases and dampness out of you to relieve aches and pains). This is why postnatal mothers were given lots of ginger to ‘beat the wind’ . . . The strongest ginger is just beneath the skin, so to get the most flavour out of it don’t peel it.”
Wee: (from Chillies entry in the ingredient glossary): This particular type had been developed in Holland so that the Dutch could replicate their favourite Indonesian dishes back in their homeland, far away from their previous colonies. . . . My mother . . . always threatened to smear our lips with chilli paste if we ever told a lie. It was an effective tactic.”
Haigh: “This type was developed in Holland so that the Dutch could replicate their favourite Indonesian dishes back in their homeland, far away from their previous colonies . . . When we were little, or growing up, if we were naughty, my mother would threaten to rub chili on our gums or put it on our toothbrush. We always behaved after that threat because we totally believed her.”

Really very nice Uncle Roger review 👍

    • @foxbatt
      @foxbatt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

What would be an even NICER review is the review for Makan - and the resulting Catch 22 situation - does Uncle Roger take down this video to protect frequent collaborator Auntie Liz from the heat from the alleged plagiarism BUT THEN forego the SUBSTANTIAL short-term ad revenue, publicity and engagement metrics from alleged plagiarism for Makan going viral globally with video links from numerous online news outlets reporting the alleged plagiarism? :)
For folks in Ad-Tech, how does controversy affect engagement, Return on Ad Spend (RoAS) bearing in mind brand identity, safety and equity and the myriad range of ad objectives in this case?

    • @kaytan2205

It's not very nice that Uncle Roger is reviewing and calling for donations for someone who steals other people's work and passes them off as her own... Haigh's plagiarism came out 6 days ago... he posted this 3 days ago... and no word from either Uncle Roger or Haigh except for the deleting of comments.
