5:11 True story, I'm Thai and my grandma visited me when I was studying in London, so she was cooking with Shrimp paste, I went outside to buy noodles from the Asian supermarket. We didn't have the best smoke hood, so she opened the windows.
I came back, to see five construction guys drilling the front of our house. I asked them why they were here- "Your neighbour complained about smelling a gas leak".
I went into the kitchen, grabbed some shrimp paste, made them smell it, and they went red in the face, and wrinkled up their noses as if they had been forced to lick vomit.
They apologised, and fixed the 2 metre-deep hole they had drilled.
My neighbour moved out a month later.

I gotta say this was super wholesome to watch. I love how under the guise of dissing certain cuisines, Uncle Roger’s actually open to trying and appreciating foods he hasn’t tasted before. To me that’s character development of the best kind, and more cuisines can be showcased to the world! A win-win for EVERYONE :)

As a Thai guy who spent 8 years in Minnesota, i wanna thank the Lao and Hmong communities (and my local Chinese restaurant) for feeding me. i think I would've starved otherwise 😢😅😂

I will have to admit that I had zero information about Laos. This is not just a fun video to watch, but learning more about the culture.
Now, I started to search more about the history and I'm loving it!

Since he mentioned Laos and Cambodia he got flooded with tons of stitches and responses to his videos. He got interactions and people who normally don’t have the size of his platform got more attention by dueting his videos. People can be upset but it just brought more attention to Laotian and Cambodian cuisines.
I was really hoping that would happen and it did help that Ae already was in the Gordon Ramsay cooking show.
That was his scheme this whole time. Controversy garners alot of attention. Plus, he gets to do new videos like this where he gets to eat good food. Now if I said anything negative about other cultures, all I get is beat up.
Cambodian and Laotian food in America is more recognized than Malaysian food.

Well I think the reason that some Thai restaurants in America feel watered down is because when they initially opened up restaurants, Americans couldn’t really handle the heat. I do love many Thai and Laotian restaurants in Oklahoma but Thai restaurants can be considerably more subdued. As many cultures adapt to “americans taste” they are losing their culture. I would love authentic restaurants all around. 🥰

Also not all Thai food in the US are owned by Thai ( many Asian ppl like Chinese Indian Vietnam also like to open Thai restaurant too) so the flavour ofc are different from what Thai usually eat

Dont forget indonesian food as well. I do find it kinda sad that average foreigners only know rendang and nasi goreng, despite there are tons of cuisines in this archipelago. Even each regions are so unique it comparable to smaller nations.

I love that the Lao food was legit and not changed or altered to be more Americanized. I am Laotian and this is exactly how we make these dishes. Uncle roger was brave to put that whole roasted pepper in his mouth. I know his ears were hot. Also, seeing him joke around and then smile sweetly after was so cute. You tried the food and said it was good so I will forgive you for what you said. 😂

When I saw that video of him "trashing" Lao and Cambodian food I was like "uh oh" and I secretly was hoping someone from Laos and Cambodia would call him up for a challenge. Soooo glad this is happening. These 2 are lovely together. The lady is super cool. My first tour 1971 was Cam Rahn Bay South Vietnam. Second tour 1973 was out of NKP Thailand on the Mekong river. It only cost 50 cents to get across the river into Laos and it cost everything you had to get back to Thailand. Thais are the most friendly folks I have ever met and their food is spicy hot.

Nice, being partially Laotian myself I'm used to people mostly not even knowing that a country such as Laos exists, always a nice surprise to see it pop up somewhere and tell others about its culture, altho I do think they should've made lap (larb), which in my opinion, being an unofficial Lao national food, represents the cuisine better and tastes absolutely amazing, must recommend.

I grew up around a lot of Lao people and that food was some of the best I’ve had in my life and I’m a proud Mexican AND Filipino but the way the Lao incorporated the different flavors was amazing!

As being half Thai and half Laos, the culture are very similar. My parents speak to either in Thai or Laos and they understand each other. I was laughing through out the video cause I didn’t know if i should be offended or not cause he is dissing Lao food but praising thai food. 😂 My fav Laotian food is beef laab.
Depends hardly on the dialect, my mom learned thai so she can understand also bangkok thai, but i only speak a bit of Lao and only understand Isaan Thai. Talk to me in bangkok thai like my gf and i'll only understand every 5th word or so 😂

In summary, Laos papaya salad is Isaan papaya salad (somtum lao). It's not papaya salad from Laos left.

For anyone interested they are actually at a Vietnamese restaurant called Lotus in Minneapolis which is why the lady at the end (owner) thought it was funny to call Laos food sh*t.
There is actually a Laotian restaurant that just opened less than a mile away called Gai Noi with an amazing rooftop though :-)

Isan then united with Ayutthaya to become Rattanakosin kingdom. In fact, whole Laos was under Thailand's influences. Idk what kind of history you learnt but its not quite accurate.

As Thai Isan. I can say Isan food and Lao food are similar by look and name but the taste are little different. Lao food will have more nature flavor from the ingredients but Thai Isan food will add flavor from thai spice too match Thai teste.
