Now I finally get that the closing bit from Buckaroo Banzai about "will return in BB against the World Crime League" was just a reference to this movie.
I grew up with Ron Ely as Tarzan and read many of the Doc Savage books in the late 70s and early 80s so thrilled by this movie. Still love it. Should and could be the next franchise movie. Difficult to bring this character into modern times with the modern technology today which were just science fiction in the 1920s. Difficult to offer another pre-WWII adventurer with comparisons to Indiana Jones.
Bry - as a native American, the funniest part to me is when the art director can't choose what type of 'Indians' are attacking Doc Savage. This is not me being some kind of scold - I legit LOVE that they tried to literally faithfully translate 30s pulp novels to the screen without being as racially wild as the original books were. Makes for a hysterical movie, sir. :)
I've read a few of the Doc Savage stories and you are absolutely right, a lot of the times it's like...why are these guys even here because Doc can do everything! Also they get very silly. I think a while back they wanted to make a new Doc Savage with Dwayne Johnson in the title role.
I saw this when it came out & loved it (I was 10, lol), it was hilarious what I refer to as a"spoof"!! It's 1 of the movies I made sure that my son's saw growing up (my youngest also 10, 11 & 13)!! A cult classic
hi Matt, just want to let you know ive been watching for over a decade and always appreciated your insight, tact, and experience. keep up the good work! ps. seen it: Furiosa?
I saw this originally when I was eight years old and I loved it. It feels like watching a Marvel comic book from the fifties or sixties, it’s over the top, action packed, funny, quirky, and nonsensical. In general it’s a fun B movie, I kinda wish a sequel was made but I understand why it wasn’t.
This looks like a pilot movie so a CBS show that would follow Wonder Woman. And I think it would have been good as a TV show where you can develop the characters better.
Growing up in the 70s I remember watching Ron Ely every Saturday morning as Tarzan. I didn't really enjoy it but there were only three channels so I watched it pretty frequently. I'm not counting UHF channels.
this movie is greatly hilarious in the French dub : Savage VO is George Aminel, he was Sydney Poitier voice and Jame Earl Jones (yes Darth Vader himself) and also better known for his Looney Tunes Sylvester the Cat voice. for the dubbing, a lot of VO ad lib jokes and Aminel gave weird speech impediment to the Doc, which his hilarious when he gives his speech to Mona explaining why he remains single, to conclude by the now cult quote (at least in France) ""Mona, vous etes bath !" (Mona, you re the brick in the original).
I got the first Doc Savage bantam book for my 23rd birthday last year and I read the Thousand Head Man a earlier this year. Aside from some of the weird views on Race (they were sympathetic to Mayans but were horrendously racist against Eastern Asians), these books were fun to read!
No joke, I just got home from watching that one guy be that principal at that school, at a breakfast showing, at a cinema. Breakfast showing if the breakfast club
Doc Savage has a sign that says 'Fortress of Solitude'. Which he hangs INSIDE THE FRIGGING IGLOO - (the Frigloo?) - and my questions are many. 1. Does he forget that it's the Fortress of Solitude when he's on the phone and needs a reminder, like a temp? 2. Why does the sign exist? He's the only one who knows it's the Fortress of Solitude, also no one ELSE IS GOING TO BE IN THE FORTRESS OF SOLITUDE!!!! Is the sign for his enemies benefit? 'No, I know - it's a big ass igloo, but you're in the right place -- yeah, turns out my secret base is basically a grampa's den and a lathe and a rocket that catches fish. My place in New York is WAY BETTER. You know what? I'll just put up a sign.'
Seen it: The Autopsy of Jane Doe. I was fascinated and enthralled when it was an autopsy mystery, then bored and annoyed when it became generic horror nonsense. Enemy of the State: this film was my silly action comfort film when I was a teen.
Love the Doc Savage character, but this movie always frustrates me 😤 It doesn’t know what it wants to be, as it’s not serious, but it’s also not funny, not even in a campy way. It’s just… cornball. Which is _not_ how a movie based on this franchise’s decades of lore, great storytelling, and strong characters should have been handled ☹️ Thanks for covering it guys, now i don’t have to inflict this one on myself again for a while 😅 Edit - Seen It: Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow? Another somewhat disappointing pulp-inspired outing, but at least it’s better than this movie 😜
I haven't watched the movie (BTW...old dude 60 Yr old male...I've actually probably seen it)... The edit of this video made it seem very similar to ""The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension"
This movie reminded me the most of the Adam West Batman. An incredibly ridiculous plot played completely serious by everyone. But surprisingly way less funny considering it came out after the show ended.
I think this movie has a lot in common with The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Ok idea, bad timing and poor execution.... I saw this when I was a kid at a drive-in theater. When the shaman is shouting nonsense..."Rugga Bunga" isn't the thing that I remember...fondly... Well maybe not fondly...but my young self was...amused... It was when he screamed, "Arranka Nalga"' Which in Spanish means, "Tear Ass". Or rip off some ass.... or possibly, euphemistically....go get yourself a nice big honkin'' piece of glory.... Well, I thought it was funny....
17:29 “The real failure in this movie is writing." Yes, in that all of the writing was pure trash. The ideas were garbage, the story was stupid, and Doc Savage is a Dollar Tree version of Superman.
Maaaaan, Doug is so witty and funny..
Great episode, fellas.
Matt: Did you have a birthday recently?
Doug: Yes, I had one this past year!
This is one of my mom's favorite movies! She used to act bits out for us. She turned 88 today!
Buckaroo Banzai makes so much more sense now.
And the Team Venture parts of Venture Bros.
Now I finally get that the closing bit from Buckaroo Banzai about "will return in BB against the World Crime League" was just a reference to this movie.

Loving Doug on this show!

I appreciate you and thank you for making content.
I saw this movie at some point, on TV in England as a kid.

Matt and Doug in fine form on this one.
I love music box so much
@15:04: Ancient MMA practicioner, lol! 😂
@12:12: a kerfuffle ensues...😂
Seen it! I Saw The Devil, a brutal but brilliant Korean classic
@14:21: i hate to be that guy, but he actually said, "Rugga, Bunga" which is a totally real series of words. 🤓 lol! 😂
Doug is my favourite Craig 😀
I find this very cool! My dad gave me some Doc Savage novels when I was a kid. I had no idea they made a movie!
Seen it! Goldeneye, Pierce Bronson’s first role as James Bond
Have you seen any of the Herschell Gordon Lewis classics, such as "Blood Feast" or the original "2,000 Maniacs"
I really relate to the maid in the window
Leathery Mephistopholes is my new band name. Thank you for that.
OMG YES.
I reviewed this and TH-cam NUKED the review.
No lie.
Amazing work!
@9:21: 😅
LES BAXTER! I love this mans music.

Don't remind your guest, Doug, another famous Ilsa movie, Ilsa She Wolf of the SS.
Can you believe Shane Black is trying to revive Doc Savage as a movie with The Rock?
I didn't know they made a live-action Venture Brothers movie
Seen it! Get Carter starring Michael Caine, one of the greatest British films ever made
It was on HBO back in the early 80s. We liked his car.
I got the first Doc Savage bantam book for my 23rd birthday last year and I read the Thousand Head Man a earlier this year. Aside from some of the weird views on Race (they were sympathetic to Mayans but were horrendously racist against Eastern Asians), these books were fun to read!
No review from the little Variety book?
I am confused this is the second or third video I seen so far after a hiatus from me why no first mike
The original pulp adventure hero's film revival being overshadowed by Spielberg's first big hit feels like foreshadowing.
"Why isn't the guy who's named Ham the guy with the pig?" The whole reason Monk got the pig for a pet was to poke fun at Ham, that's why.
I feel like I understand Buckaroo Bonzai a little better now.
Seen It? Have u seen "Miami Connection?" Idk if you would watch it on the show due to it's rating...
No joke, I just got home from watching that one guy be that principal at that school, at a breakfast showing, at a cinema. Breakfast showing if the breakfast club

There was indeed a second man with the name Doc Savage, he was best buds with Bruce Banner in Marvel comics 👍
Doc Savage has a sign that says 'Fortress of Solitude'.

I loved this movie as a kid....Ron Ely would've made a Great Batman.
Seen it:
The Autopsy of Jane Doe. I was fascinated and enthralled when it was an autopsy mystery, then bored and annoyed when it became generic horror nonsense.
Enemy of the State: this film was my silly action comfort film when I was a teen.
Seen it? Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 : The Secret of The Ooz (1991)

It pronounced Ron eel-ee not Ron E-li
I read the Doc Savage book which this was based on that too long ago. Believe it or not, the writing in that was even worse.
Hey, listen. I love Doc. Pal fucked up. No shade on Doc.
This movie reminded me the most of the Adam West Batman. An incredibly ridiculous plot played completely serious by everyone. But surprisingly way less funny considering it came out after the show ended.
I saw this when I was 10... it did not age well.
The visitor did his part of the Craig role but the "movie" was TeRRible. really gotta deliver a better movie next time.
I think this movie has a lot in common with The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Ok idea, bad timing and poor execution.... I saw this when I was a kid at a drive-in theater. I love George Pal, but this movie is a real stinker
17:29 “The real failure in this movie is writing." Yes, in that all of the writing was pure trash. The ideas were garbage, the story was stupid, and Doc Savage is a Dollar Tree version of Superman.
Doc Savage was created before Superman.
It's a movie for kids....relax.
