  • We belatedly celebrate Valentine’s Day with a screwball comedy classic starring the one and only Cary Grant. Also Irene Dunn and a very cute dog. Come and it on the old leather couch with us and learn the awful truth for yourself.
In Seen It, we discuss more Oscar contenders: a family of parasites, a pair of popes and a story of marriage.

A prefix goes at the beginning of the word, and a suffix goes at the end of the word. I think the term Craig was looking for was affix, which is a particle that attaches at some point to the root, and includes both of the previous terms.

This is the first time that Craig “suffix” Johnson has been wrong on the show. Matt should’ve edited it out. Now I can’t lazily take everything he says as truth. I added a suffix and an affix to lazy.

Speaking if animal actors, and the Wizard of Oz, I had a curiosity of why Uncle Billy had a pet raven. I didn't find out why he had a one, but I did find out that the Raven, Jimmy the Raven, played in over 1,000 feature films. Jimmy Stewart said that the raven "is the smartest actor on the set" requiring fewer re-takes than his human counterparts. All that info and no reason why Uncle Billy had one as a pet.

No exaggeration, This is certain to become one of my new favorite episodes since you guys' unique brand of humor rings true from start to finish. Since I just moved to Belgium I have to ask if you've seen any of the films of Agnes Varda. I just saw Cléo from 5 to 7 and It showed a whole new side of the french new wave. It tackles both societal expectations of women in the late 60s as well as the power of film and art against tough situations in life.

I know this is a weird thing to pick out from this whole video, but rewind doesn't mean backwards, it's quite literally rewinding the tape around the spool in the video tape.
On that note, this seems like a fun movie and you're right, that last scene with them and the door and the way she looks at him at the end is just so perfect. I only wish I could pull off that same movement with any amount of grace that she had for it. Absolutely stunning.

Basketball was invented in 1891. The backboard was added roughly 5 years later (cementing the practical use of "rebound shots") and the actual word "rebound" seems to have shown up in a basketball context within 10 years after that. Despite the age of this movie, it's still very plausible that "rebound" came into dating from sports!

Forgive me my "Well, ACTUALLY..." post: I think you might be thinking of "affix," Craig, rather than "suffix"---affix refers to the general thing added to a word to change its meaning, rather than suffix, which is the type of affix added to the end. I got curious about the use of "rebound" in terms of romance, so I checked the OED, which quotes an 1853 source for its earliest use. Much older than I would have guessed. Interesting! Thanks for another great episode and discussion!

Bit late to the party but great ep as always guys. I could see you guys being iffy about Irene Dunn until the sister scene, and even just watching the clips I could see she was a bit flat until then.
Yeah, the suffix thing... Matt is right. An easy way to remember is to break it down to the literal meaning of the Latin-- Suffixum--. 'Su' is from 'Sub' and 'fixum' is literally to fix. So it's something fixed to the 'sub' (under, or the end) of the word. It's always 'under' because of the 'su' in the word, for the same reason, 'pre' always goes before. Though funnily enough, 'sub' on its own is a prefix, haha. (Submarine/Subterranean)
I speak Italian so I tend break it down in meaning when I'm unsure, since 'su/pre' is more widely heard in Italian. It's a nice little shortcut for me.

Even if you haven’t seen it yet, do you feel at least a little drive to see it seeing as how it’s probably the first time in ages if not ever that a studio got massive negative feedback and instead of lashing back, toxic fanbase I believe is the popular term, they took it to heart and actually delayed its release to fix its biggest problem. Also its got Jim Carrey returning to form after so long.
