I can honestly say this song was a defining point in my childhood. It was ‘84 and I was 12. I was at my best friend Sandy’s house when all of a sudden I hear this guitar riff and Morrissey’s distinct voice coming out of her older sister Marie’s room. I immediately ask Sandy what Marie was playing and she shrugged so I went to Marie’s room and stood by her door as she was applying her eyeliner in the mirror and singing along. I saw the Hatful of Hollow album cover on her bed and asked her what she was listening to. She casually replied “The Smiths” and I made a mental note. That moment in Marie’s room changed me. The sound was unlike anything I had ever heard before. l literally felt hypnotized and I had a weird sense that I would never be the same again. Like all of a sudden I felt older and wiser. I eventually got the record a few weeks later and have been listening to it ever since. I’m 50 now and I’ll never forget the feeling of hearing The Smiths for the first time.

I can't believe Morrissey and Marr don't like this song. I've always loved it, especially the falsetto at the end, the lyrics, and how hard hitting it is. This version is already great, but then the Peel/Hatful of Hollow version blows it away (in my opinion) and that was a live performance!
"Morrissey has stated on more than one occasion that "What Difference Does It Make?" is among his least favourite Smiths songs. He picked on the "rockist" influences and the "cliche" lyrics in particular, saying he "regretted the track the day after the record was pressed". Marr has similarly voiced his cynicism, stating "I didn't think it was a particularly strong one....There was one stage where I was playing [What Difference Does It Make?] seven or eight gigs on the trot and I didn't like the feeling. I knew that this was not why I had got involved in a band in the first place." I don't see it at all
This song makes everything seem so simple. As soon as I hear the “so what difference does it make” it feels like everything doesn’t matter, my problems, my ideas, my thoughts, and it’s weirdly calming that way. Helps me through tough times.
One of the Classic's from the 1980's club scene. I hate getting old. Please, someone invent a time machine so I can go the hell back to where I belong.
1:42 to 2:17 is absolutely FUCKING EPIC. You can hear the crowd going mental as it sinks in what they are witnessing. This is at the very apex of perfection.
Every now and again, if I'm feeling a bit angsty (as happens to us all from time to time) I give this a blast. It disperses the pent up frustrations and sounds fantastic and makes feel 17 again all at once. An ear kissing, anger venting, nostalgia inducing tonic. Long live The Mozzer and Marr!
Looking back, I remember how the Smiths sound, look, and sensibility stood out from the rest of the popular music of the early 80s, even by Brit Pop/Rock standards they were just more unique in their own way. What a marriage of sound and lyric that could only have been realized by Marr, Morrissey, Rourke, and Joyce.

I knew that this was not why I had got involved in a band in the first place."
I don't see it at all
I think they didn't like the studio version ,the peel sessions version was better IMO.
I still cant believe THAT was a LIVE version!!!
Its my favourite one and i strongly belived it was a studio version due to the amazing sound!
Its not live... where is his mic. lol
We're talking about the Hatful of Hollow version, not this video.
There is no other band like the SMITHS. They are many bands in the 80's from the U.K. that are extremely Talented.
those glasses have come back in fashion, why can't this genre of music?!
It is if you go to the right places and hang out with the right people.
It's sort of post-punk
If you love it like I do, who cares what others think! It's always in fashion!!!
Tonya Merritt Leather is always in fashion and glasses are not.
hipster glasses
My favourite band of all time, they broke the mould, lyrics of a genius and the music is just bliss.
Best Smiths Song ever.
Please, someone invent a time machine so I can go the hell back to where I belong.
israel24961 episode 4, san junipero?
Self-care is dancing like Morrissey in your room while listening to The Smiths.
so true
just a couple minutes ago I had a rather therapeutic session in the kitchen!

Facts
I really feel like the NHS should prescribe this to depressed people.
this takes me back to my youth, what an incredible song, simply amazing how this music gets better over the years
Wish i could've experienced the 80's and 90's for myself. Such a great era for music, and style.
This song is way too short. So addictive.
Rest in peace Andy Rourke 💜🌹💜
One of my favorites songs of all time
Moz was superb his voice had paradise in it ❤🎉
My 2 year old Son dances with the care free abandon of Morrissey whenever I play The Smiths ... May He always dance this way .
One of the most genuine bands I have ever heard.
Wow! His voice is so powerful it can carry over the sound of the instruments and audience without a mic. That's talent.
It’s lip synced as were most performances on top of the pops
Listening The Smiths Songs while reading a book about them... it' s 2022 and I love this music
This song cured my depression for a full 3 minutes and 26 seconds ❤️🩹💙👌. The smiths are my new favourite band 🏴 🇬🇧
Johnny Marr is one of the best guitarists in the world! Greetings from Argentina.
That feeling you get when you listen to a song which brings memories and it feels as if it put you back in time...... Wow.
1:42 to 2:17 is absolutely FUCKING EPIC. You can hear the crowd going mental as it sinks in what they are witnessing. This is at the very apex of perfection.
Im from argentina! 51 year old! The Smits the best! 👋👋👋

No wonder Morrisey was an unlikely fashion icon.
Yea but morrisey is an asshole
@@marker794 how so
@@grimm4990 he just is by the way he looks in every single music video and interview
You dinna mind the hearing aid? ;)
My grandmother's Sunday shirt! Dead! lmao
2:03 nobody credits Morrisey with inventing the dab.
OMG
@MR Melton...Can you explain 'the dab'...? Whatchootalkin''bout Willis...?
The dab is a mentally challenged gesture made by the mentally challenged when they want to announce their mentally challenged-ness to others.
@Rowan Melton more like the only cultural sin he's ever made
@@deprimeplatypus490 well
One of my fav Smiths songs hands down. Morrisey's dancing is fuckin dank. Totally gonna steal his moves lol
Dreighen It's mine too...well this and Rubber Ring vie for first place in my affections...sometimes What Difference Does It Make? wins...sometimes Rubber Ring wins...tonight What Difference Does It Make? wins...tomorrow, however, this may be different.
Dreighen *Morrissey
Plus he dabbed
Strong contender for my favourite of theirs, too, though there's a number of contenders, particularly among their earlier ones from 1983-85.
Summer of 1984, I was 11, my 17yr old sister used to blast this album love you sis ❤️❤️xxx
Love love love his falsetto.
This sounds better now than it did when it came out.
Still lovin his voice after 29+ years :)
All men have secrets and here is mine
So let it be known
For we have been through hell and high tide
I can surely rely on you
And yet you start to recoil
Heavy words are so lightly thrown
But still I'd leap in front of a flying bullet for you
So, what difference does it make ?
So, what difference does it make ?
It makes none
But now you have gone
And you must be looking very old tonight
The devil will find work for idle hands to do
I stole and I lied, and why ?
Because you asked me to !
But now you make me feel so ashamed
Because I've only got two hands
Well, I'm still fond of you
So, what difference does it make ?
Oh, what difference does it make ?
It makes none
But now you have gone
And your prejudice won't keep you warm tonight
Oh, the devil will find work for idle hands to do
I stole, and then I lied
Just because you asked me to
But now you know the truth about me
You won't see me anymore
Well, I'm still fond of you, oh-ho-oh
But no more apologies
No more, no more apologies
Oh, I'm too tired
I'm so sick and tired
And I'm feeling very sick and ill today
But I'm still fond of you
Oh, my sacred one!
53 and still singing The Smiths
When listening to The Smiths or David Bowie, I get nostalgic and in my head, I walk down the streets of London. Great times:)
imagine being the band that jammed that out for the first time, fuck ing hell they must have known what they made
kk
yeah one of the greatest songs ever written
I think that you are so right here , wow it must have felt sensational , what a riff but for it to work in this song you needed a rare talent to project it,step forward one Johnnie Marr. The rest is history.
Roger Jones ihlgighlujhhhjjjhjjk
What a great song... Born in 1979
Went to see them in Reading in 1985. What memories.
Jake buggs kingpin sounds like what diff does it make liston to it
I have had the guitar riff, the bass riff, and the vocals all stuck in my head at different points.
Morrissey is such a charming man
See what u did there
Not really but I got the joke
Gigi Rauchut y do u disagree?
Berenice Jimenez he’s not a good man. I mean I love his music and his voice but everything else about him is just ugh
Trust me, he's a douche
I envy every person who was a teen/adult at this time!
I love the way he dances. The definition of cool. :)
I get goose bumps. Oh my, since I was a kid in love with Morrisey's Voice.
man he is so attractive i could cry
You and me both, menna. You and me both.
Except I did cry.
That riff is soooooooooooooooooo GOOD
You know that feeling when you get bored of The Smiths? Lol me neither :3
