    Lyrics
    When routine bites hard
    And ambitions are low
    And resentment rides high
    But emotions won't grow
And we're changing our ways, taking different roads
Then love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again
Why is the bedroom so cold?
You've turned away on your side
    Is my timing that flawed?
    Our respect runs so dry
    Yet there's still this appeal
That we've kept through our lives
But love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again
You cry out in your sleep
    All my failings exposed
And there's a taste in my mouth
    As desperation takes hold
    Just that something so good
    Just can't function no more
Then love, love will tear us apart again
Love, love will tear us apart again
Then love, love will tear it apart again
Love, love will tear it apart again

If any musician deserves a place in heaven, it was ian curtis.
He suffered terribly with epilepsy, and was tormented by the heavy, early medicine they used to try treating this horrible condition, and to ian, suicide was eventually preferable to continuing to suffer.
He didnt overdose, or lose his life to hedonism.
He literally couldnt take the pain any longer.
God rest your soul ian Curtis.

Back in the 80s my mum really liked this song. She was not into my music at all generally but she really enjoyed this. I lost her by suicide just over 20 years ago after she had suffered many years of mental health issues. I always think of her when I hear this and have always wondered if she felt connected to the song or some empathy for the singer. I truly feel for all the tormented souls that suffer mental illness and hope that they find happiness.

This song and video captured Joy Division's outward musical ethos perfectly.
Four young men, dressed in formal wear in an empty room nearly devoid of color.
Peter Hook seeming angry while playing an incredible riff.
Bernard struggling to play the ethereal perfectly.
Steven hammering a tight, flawless driving beat.
And Ian, with an exhausted, but soulful delivery of a beautiful melancholy summary of love that is nearly dead.
Aurally captured and enhanced with the musical production talents of Martin Hannet.
This is how Joy Division will be remembered.

I was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder this year. Idk why, but immediately after that appointment + diagnosis, I went home, stormed into my room and had this song on repeat for a little while. I guess I relate to Ian Curtis on a spiritual level at times because I, too, have felt that all I do is cry out for help and no one could hear me. I just find comfort listening to sad music in general, be it Joy Division or Elliott Smith or the Who (Behind Blue Eyes gets me every single time) or Pink Floyd (Brain Damage and I Wish You Were Here especially). I cry, sure, but I guess it temporarily numbs the pain. I also liked that Curtis seemed to not care if he smiled in photos or not. I envy that lol.

    And resentment rides high,
    But emotions won't grow,
    And we're changing our ways,
    Taking different roads.
Then love, love will tear us apart again.
But love, love will tear us apart again.
Why is the bedroom so cold?
You've turned away on your side.
    Is my timing that flawed?
    Our respect runs so dry.
    Yet there's still this appeal
That we've kept through our lives.
Do you cry out in your sleep?

    All my failings exposed.
Get a taste in my mouth,
    As desperation takes hold.

When the lyrics the artist is singing are true you can just feel it. Phenomenal song. So sad we will never hear anything else from this brilliant artist. Rest in peace my friend.

And 3 weeks after this video was filmed he took his own life… we will never know what joy division would of become… but secretly I think we all know.. such a tortured soul to write such a honest song about his own marriage… I hope he can look down and see how his pain has helped me and many hundreds of people through the hardest of times in life …. RIP ian curtis

Man, they had the coolest practice space. I saw an interview with Johnny Marr, and he said they used to rehearse in the same abandoned building, and that they would sometimes cross paths with Joy Division in the stairwells. Imagine that.

I come back to this thread every now and again and the one thing that always strikes me every time l do is the complete love there is for Ian. In 20 years from now I think the same will be true, people like Curtis don't disappear and people like us I guess are the custodians.

Seeing Ian singing and holding the G chord like that just reminds us that this wasn't a polished mature band, but still early in their playing skills absolute simplicity, yet the magic that resulted was just that - magic. It's just something that doesn't happen with music anymore, it's gone.
