Hi everyone, Aiden here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness on our 2023 Kia Sportage. This is gonna give you a 4-way connector on the back of your vehicle, giving you running lights, brake lights and turn signals with any trailer that you plan on towing. And even some accessories like bike racks will utilize something like a 4-pole to give you those signals at the back of a bike rack if you plan on using that with your Sportage. Our connector is located pretty far down underneath but it's attached to a bracket on our hitch. Not included, but it does utilize that really well in our kit, our kit today and the kit does come with a dust cover to keep it protected whenever it's not in use.
On the vehicle side of things, it's just going to plug into your factory taillight connectors. There's no need to splice into any factory wiring and that makes this kit pretty easy to install. We'll walk you through the process right now so you can see how to pull those taillights out, plug them in and run the power wire up to the battery. Let's check it out. Now we're gonna start our installation off opening the back hatch and coming to the taillight where we're gonna have a protective sort of decorative cover and we can remove that with a trim panel tool or a flathead screwdriver.
Now this is a little tricky to remove but if you look closely, there's two small tabs or indents at the top and bottom and I'll do my best to keep my hands out of the way, but it's gonna be easiest to get your trim panel tool inserted into that top opening, try to wedge it in, and if you can get your tool in and kind of release it from the top and work your way to the bottom after that, that's gonna be the easiest way to get this popped out and fully remove it to gain access to these two bolts underneath. And here we can get a better look at what those tabs look like. Those are the things we're trying to release and if you start from the bottom it just doesn't want to give, so start from the top, it's gonna be easier. And you can use a Phillips head screwdriver or a 10 mil and back those out on both the top and the bottom, making sure to set them safely to the side for reinstallation later. And with the fasteners undone you can pull the taillight straight out.
Now, I'll be honest, it's gonna be difficult especially if this is your first time doing it. We did this off camera just because it felt like we were getting too much resistance, but it'll pop. So just get some hands it there and just pull straight out and you'll have these two tabs on the back release. Again, if it's your first time doing it, it's gonna be stiff so it was a little easier that time because we did it off camera once. We can turn our attention now though to this connector at the back, press in this tab and pull out and set the taillight to the side safely for now.
With the taillight out of the way we can feed a fish wire down the cavity and out to the bottom where we can attach our wiring. We're using a piece of airline tube today 'cause it's got a little bit of structure to it and we can push it all the way down until it gets fed out the bottom. There's a small gap at the bottom that I can actually see the floor through so I'll just feel for it and grab it out the other side whenever I find it. Now on this end we can take the piece of our wiring that we need to feed up here, tape it around and pull it up through. We'll quickly run over the components of the wiring here. There's the module box here, our 4-pole connector that'll go by the hitch, we've got the black lead for our power wire that will eventually get run up to the battery, we've got our green lead that's going to go to the passenger side and that leaves us with our yellow, brown and red lead, that's gonna go for the driver's side. This is the part we'll tape and put up into that cavity. Plus there's going to be a white ground wire with a ring terminal on the end that we'll eventually use to ground this. So now we can begin the fun part of feeding this back up through trying to not get it caught on anything which is easier said than done when it's all back here where you can't really reach but do your best to pull it up evenly. Luckily there's a fair amount of room to work back there. Only a few obstacles in our way, but we can get most of it up here pretty smoothly. We'll undo our tape and make some connections. So the connections are gonna be pretty straightforward. We've got a male and a female end. One of them's gonna look exac

I just took my SUV, identical to this for the wiring to be installed. The tech didn't have to cut any cables. The power, cable was run thru the cabin, no mess going under the SUV, and practically ended up right next to the battery. E-trailer you can do better with your how to videos.

We had to add some length to the green wire because it was too short. The length of that wire right out of the box isn't too consistent, it can vary. In this instance, it wasn't long enough so we had to lengthen it. Running the wire under the vehicle is a valid choice that is usually easier than running it through the passenger compartment.

The Curt # C99DR trailer wiring harness shown in the video is vehicle-specific, and is meant to fit the 2022 - 2024 Kia Sorento without Factory Tow Package and the 2023 - 2023 Kia Sportage. Hope that helps!
