When I was in the air force we had a v16 twin turbo catapiller generator. It had a radiator that was 16 ft x16 ft and the fan was powered by a 75 horse power electric motor . It also was air start. It had 2 air compressors one electric and one diesel powered. This unit b powered à 5 story hospital .it was a standby unit. It was ran under full load every 2 weeks for testing . Denis from Santa rosa California.
Toby, just to let you know, I finally got the deal done and picked up the good radiator for my D17000. Had it shipped from Mn to Ma. Took about a year dealing with the weather, etc. Thanks for the lead, will help in restoration of my genset. Herb 24 Sept 2022
7mi up the road from me is one of these (after seeing this video) with all the shrouding in place. Is sitting on the back of a large 70s Ford truck. I think it's mated to a huge compressor. The whole thing eats up nearly ever bit of space on the truck bed.
Just to let you know GE used two of the D17000 series engine two each with electric start on their 44 ton diesel switcher. A number of railroad museums have them non operational. Might be worth while to offer your knowledge and experience to them if they want to restore their 44 toner to operational status. Just a thought.
The thing is they are so well made that they could still be returned to service and work perfectly. Sand blast them and they will be as good as new underneath. The castings will machine up like new. You can't kill an old cat!, they ain't scrap, they just resting!
Thanks. That would snatch a tranny or a set of bull gears right out. Sounds like a 343 type all right. I ran a 7-E and 8-H with those and I never got tired of hearing them snort. Straight pipes too. I like your stuff and I'll be around close! Thanks!

Would those be for generator use only, or would they be used in Cat crawlers/excavators, etc... too?

Boy I'd like to hear one of those snort! Looked like an old G.M.C. GI in the background.

Will they deliver or do you have to run home for the trailer? 😎👍👀
Whole cow that thing enourmous
those are about the same size as a 379 cat.. I've worked on bigger cat engines 3608's and 3616's.those aren't even the biggest engines Cat makes now.
There's a video on TH-cam of one of these on a prony brake. Quiet the engine.
