Starts on the 19th time everytime
Actually the bulldozer started on the first try. The pony motor is what took numerous tries. Teeeechnically lol.

Oh the memories. My dad somehow acquired a D2 cat that had a dead starter motor. We had a 76 chevy pickup that had been a little extra horsepower to pull a large 5th wheel trailer. We used to hook a towstrap to one of the hooks on the front of the truck, run it under the blade of the cat and hook it to the frame. Then I'd get on the cat and pull in both yokes, he'd put the truck in reverse, 4 wheel drive and we'll pull start it. The strap, since it was under the blade, would lift it enough to get it off the ground and then we could get going just fast enough that when I dropped the yokes, it would jump start the diesel motor.

I wouldn't call it a safe method, but as a 14/15 year old, it was fun!
As an owner of this exact same machine, i can tell you one tip that will save you that nightmare we watched of you and your buddy trying to get it started.....although we can all use the workout sometimes.
1. don't turn the pup motor off by the Magneto, always turn off the fuel supply and let the carb run dry. Once it dies off, you can reset your choke, throttle, and turn the Magneto off so everythings ready for the next time you want to start it up. Your carb is where the problem starts, and if you let that run out of fuel everytime, you'll have a 1-3 pull start every time.
2. Step 1 has never failed.

These old Caterpillar machines are treasured jewels. They should be restored and used whenever possible. The generation of mechanics and engineers who built this machine are no longer around, but their incredible work is a testament to the quality and durability that went into every
Machine they built. Try buying a new equivalent Caterpillar today and see what they cost. Well done and bravo.
Haha I got my 1938 D2 running this year. It had been sitting in a field for 10 years or more and it came with the property i bought. I was able to get parts for the fuel system overnight from caterpillar!
My Dad used to make sales calls at the Cat parts distribution center in York, Pa., and he was amazed at the size and efficiency of the operation. He said if you needed a tiny part for a 50-year-old machine they could ID it, locate it and have it in your hand in a few minutes. So much for just-in-time inventory...

Scott when I started work on coal strip mines we had a D9 Cat with a pony engine (that is what we called the 2 cyl. gas engine that started the diesel engine). Love it. Just a tip if you don't already know you should always turn the gas off to the pony motor and let the carb run dry after starting the diesel motor.
Incredible! I have one at my family's ranch, been indoors it's whole life. Would love to find someone to refurbish it. It's probably the nicest unrestored 42? d2 you'll ever see
Nice to see ya selling that crawler. Don't get me wrong here, but, if ya don't have a purpose for it... Nice to see someone willing to let the next guy have it than to just let it sink into the ground. It really gets me how some guys will just hold on to it till it's scrap "oh, I'm gonna fix it up some day". Better to give it a life. " If you love something, then, set it free" !
Brings back memories of vibrating compacting house pads in Wash. D.C. in the early 70's. What a time to be alive.

OMG! Wish I had run across this earlier! I would buy that in a heartbeat! Brings back great memories. Spent many many days using one of these as a kid plowing fields. We had a dozer blade on ours that was great for roadwork and moving a little dirt around.. Still got it? BTW a little starter fluid in the pony worked wonders along with consistent use but you always had to pull it at least 5-10 times..
We are SO spoiled in our instant gratification, push-button world. This was great. As always, thanks for sharing.

Scott - There's a series of kids books with anthropomorphized tractors called Tractor Mac. One of the characters is a Cat just like that one. If your grandsons like tractors or farm/logging work, you might look them up.
I truly enjoy your channel and it inspires me to keep working on my old house, truck, and other hobbies after my 9-5 IT job.

Kinda misty eyed here remembering my grandfather and his bulldozer.
We did a LOT of work with it, and it was a cornerstone of his construction business from the 40's through the 90's.
Also had to snicker... pony motors can be such a pain to start...
Cool little dozer, and it reminds me of the ones used in the movie "Fighting Seabees". My last ship (Rescue/Salvage) was diesel-electric propulsion, and there were four D399 Cats in the main engineroom. The #1 Cat was affectionately called the "rock crusher", and my bunk was located in the compartment directly above it. No sleeping when that thing started-up! :)

I was on an ATF. Good ship except for the exhaust ports. I still dislike the smell of diesel. Anyway we did a lot of good work. I'm proud of my service, including 2 WestPac cruises.

I grew up driving on after school. My dad farmed vegetables in south Florida. Bought it new. Cat ran a full page ad featuring it working plowing 8 foot sawgrass.

And than Damnable starting motor was always hard to crank. We pulled it off with a 4x4 Jeep most of the time.

Later years had electric starters for the pony motors.
@@jimcarter4929 Our D4 cats (49 & 53) had electric starters on the pony motors. Much easier than the rope.

Love it! After you cranked that jewel, I suddenly realized I was smelling the exhaust. I'm not sure whether that was psychological or related to the fact that I was operating my diesel tractor this afternoon. But I no longer smell that beloved odor now that the video is over. I guess you could say I really get into your videos. :) Thanks for sharing!
I saw a D6 sitting in some scrub land. It had a sassafrass tree growing through the block. No I can't spell. Thanks for noticing. The land owner said it was there 20 years earlier when he bought the place. I commented how sad it was in such rough shape as it would be helpful making the improvements he had planned. After 2 years over seas, I went to see him. He was digging out a cattle pond with a D6 that looked suspiciously familiar. He explained that he had cursed my name several hundred times for suggesting how it could help but he couldn't stop working on it. You just can't kill the good stuff.
A lot of the D series were brought to Australia by the US military during the Pacific campaigns during WWII. A man here purchased a few 'for a song' after the war and put them into service clearing land for farming along the Darling Downs, South East Queensland during the late forties early fifties when farmers opted for the quicker grain crops of the era. That man was Joh Bjelke-Petersen and he used the fortune he made from this enterprise to fund a well timed campaign to successfully become Premier of Queensland (Governor). His wife, Florence (Flo) Bjelke-Petersen became famous for her Pumpkin Scones recipe. I would like to say these magnificent machines are preserved as a monument to their reliability and serviceability but alas I fear they are nowhere to be seen now.
Really fun to see. My dad used one just like it to disc my grandfather's pear orchards in the Rogue Valley. He took me for a ride on it in the '70s as a little kid and he had the same trouble starting it. I think it still sits on one of the orchards today. Thanks!
A couple of years ago I worked at a Heavy stamping factory that probably made parts for that machine. They and Caterpillar grew old together. While it is still running I hope whoever buys it does a full rebuild.

The new ones sound the exact same to this day. Im a heavy equipent operator NCCER certified. My word is as good as any. Stop blabbering about the past. Things werent made better back then and our quality of life in this field have improved greatly.

This is amazing! I love the earlier made equipment, it was simple. Simple to run, simple to work on and fix, and above all made well. Not like today's heavy machinery that you need a degree in mechanics and software to run and have no chance of working on yourself

Have it's bigger brother on a ranch in NM. No one remembers how to start it down there. Sat for ten years before I came down and fired it up. Those things were built to last forever.
Were any swear words edited out while trying to start the CAT up? I get the impression you're the trades version of Mr. Rogers. My version would be one long bleep censor sound.
I've worked as an equipment tech in quarries that had some ancient equipment. Swear words while starting are called out in the owners manual as mandatory.

Scott, until now I have thought your video's showed the most important details of a project. Without a minute long cursing tirade or a distance that the rope was thrown, I am now having concerns.
Its clear that you can appreciate machines as I do; literally as works of art. Like TS Elliot wrote about, casting his poem upon the sea of humanity to see how it would fare, I've always been fascinated by the process of literally casting new machines, tools, and structures, works of art, upon the sea of entropy to see how they fare. When there are signs of age and persistant functionality, that is beautiful to me.

Wow! Nearly 75 years old, and still running. They sure built things with regards to a higher standard, in those days. Seems like until the 80's (As manufacturing began to shift overseas) things were built in such a way, that if something went wrong or broke, you would fix it. Now we just scrap it and start fresh. It saddens me that we don't fix things anymore. And on that note, I think thats why your channel is so fantastic. In "throwing away" and not fixing things anymore, we lost the "craftsman" attitude. It's great that your channel is reviving the craftsman to the few of us who believe in fixing and in the art of craftsmanship.
There's a fair bit of confirmation bias involved - all the poorly built tools and machines from that age have broken down long ago, so the only ones left are the ones that were well built, like this one - I'm sure there were plenty of other Cat D2's that didn't work nearly as well as this one, and we'll never know. I don't think you can extrapolate from these successful remnants that everything from back then was built "with regards to a higher standard". We'll only know in 75 years, when we can compare with how many 2017/18 tools are still going!

The best thing I got for my D2 was a tank heater that warms up the coolant. Pony and main start up easier and quicker after plugging it in.
Not to tell an old dog new tricks, but you could weld a large nut to the starting wheel/rope pulley so that you could just use one of those cordless impact guns to start it up. Save your back, enjoy your tractor!
This trick can be used with all manner of pull start/kick start motors. How i used to do it when I fixed small motors back in the day.
There's a nut holding the crank pulley on but it's a large one if memory serves. BUT they make big sockets too.

Smaller motors like 4-5hp briggs/stratton can get by on a cordless drill.
I don't use an impact gun because of the shock, I use a 9" Angle Grinder.
Works great for a lot of things from stubborn lawn mowers on up......

as a teen i worked on a farm that had a 1942 d2 that he bought new, and he still used it on his farm for plowing the fields, he was old school, and didn't want to get a new tractor. and he had 250 ac that he farmed, with it.
also at some point the pony motor was up dated and had a 6v starter attached to it, and a batt. still could pull rop it if it went dead. ( no charger/alternator.)
fun fact he told me that when they was selling them ( the salesman's ) would place an egg on the ground and then spin around it, and then run it over all with out cracking it, and it was to show how agile it was.
Fogging oil is your best friend for starting those spray it right in the plug hole and pull

Love this channel! Remembered the old joke about the lawnmower salesman telling the preacher to try cussing if it wouldn't start. Preacher said he didn't know any cuss words. Salesman said, "Keep pulling that rope - they'll come to you!"

Good looking little horse! I'm amazed at how good the undercarriage looks. Can't see much of it from the vid, but the rails, pads, grousers, rollers, idlers and drive sprockets all look good. The pony motors have always been temperamental. :)
I must have ridden a million miles on one of these, Dad had a D-2 and a RD-6 Cat, We farmed vegetables in South Florida.
He always called the D-2 " That yellow bastard". lol

My dad had a D2 years ago. But it had an electric start pony motor. And the diesel tank was behind the operator seat. I miss that old "kitty". That was my dad's terminology for it. :) But it began having clutch problems and repair prices were too high.

Never owned a Cat nut did have a old TD9 International that had the pony motor. It too had its cantankerous spells but boy she was a old powerful machine. Since then I also had the pleasure of a old HD5 Ali's Chalmers with the GM 71 two cycle diesel engine. Now that was a screaming machine I really miss that one. I later got more modern with a JD 350 C 70's model 6 way blade. I did my logging with that one. Just say I have spent alot of time on machines and I wouldn't change a moment.

My grandfather used a chainsaw motor with a pulley on it. He would wrap the starter motor with a belt to start it with the chainsaw motor. Might help you in the future.
