price in Sweden with some equipment: €46 000. Like what happend to the "peoples car" that is VW? I thought it would be cheaper than an E-Golf due to the all new BEV platform?

Those piano black surfaces should be banned from all cars. You can scratch them by just looking at them. It’s the worst possible material for interior trims.
@@YannR34 I'm guessing it's the cheapest or easiest to manufacture option after plain hard plastic. It does look pretty ok when there are no fingerprints or scratch marks, but it's so unbelievably fragile. I just test drove a brand new Audi A3 sedan (the new model) with only 300 km on the odometer and the piano black center console was already full of scratch marks. It looked like crap. So stupid, indeed!

I notice similar patterns in the car industry and the software industry: a lot of the management can't be impressed with patterns that are seemingly "old" and "dated". The slider probably looked "cooler" and more "sexy" than the regular, perfectly usable volume knob. Reliable patterns that have been providing great usability for a long time don't have to be reinvented for the sake of reinvention!
@@AlanTov I wasn't talking about any software of the car, I was just making an analogy between the business side of software developing (in general) and the business side of car manufacturing.
@@patrickdaly5988 Yeah. and by using a touchscreen you are much more likely to have an accident so they get money from you multiple times. I wonder why is it forbidden to use a phone in the car and then they allow for touchscreen for full airconditioning control and same for the radio. I've tried (not in this car) it and its freaking dangerous to play with AC on the touchscreen. There is no muscle memory for that when using screen, but it is for using dials and knobs.
A sturdy, quality knob is far better than any type of touch thingie like a slider. The feeling on the tip of your fingers is satisfying to many! Would never change that!
Thomas, you are the voice of the people, we really don't need this "Touch" nonsense in our cars, the driving and attention on the road should be at the forefront of interior car designers. I remember in the old days reviewers complaining about the placement of the radio and ventilation dials and 30 years of improvements is being thrown out of the window in favor of "modern look" and, maybe, cost cutting?! 🤔
Touch plays a big role in expensive cars. The feel of everything makes a big difference for me. I dont think its cut and dry that we dont care about feel. Its very low on the list, but is on the list for me when determining quality of finishes. (its a personal thing i guess)
@@porchemasi I'd argue that he's it may be an "expensive car" at first but remember it's a low category car, it's not a luxury car. It's also a pioneering car for the company. There's gonna be cut backs considering your getting its first run of technology. That's just something people are ignoring and it's ignorant and counter productive. Just because a golf has better interior... Lol.. yet it's got technology from 100 years ago, albeit with frequent incremental upgrades and improvements. This... Is a while new product. So yes... They're gonna give you some cheap plastic to go with that ground breaking and new product lol.
M M They’re not dumb, they do, just as to many other opinions and suggestions. And I’m certain that they will also analyze first customer reviews. It’s a huge company with scientific and business approach, they didn’t expand to current size for no reason. And they definitely learned their lessons from recent major fuckups. On top, they own Porsche and Porsche has already announced to go full electric. What we need in Germany is a serious cluster for Software development - like San Francisco or Bangalore. It’s too scattered: ERP in Waldorf, Database in Darmstadt, Online-Business in Berlin and Hamburg and automotive software development all over the place. There’s no clear competence center.
Thomas is one the best car reviewers, goes over every details on the car. Like this car i think it will sell good, if the prices is right. Many of the ideas on this ID 3 also been used on BMW i3.
15:43... i couldn't agree more with you ❤️ and please keep your voice loud on that... cause the companies need to make practical and functional buttons not just "looking cool" buttons... i don't want to turn my steering wheel and activate functions just by touching the surface of the buttons... is stupid.
There is a reason the motor has less horsepower on the smaller battery packs. It's because the smaller battery packs are not rated for the same number of amps. So, you wouldn't want to "tune" your drive motor to the higher spec because it would not be good for the battery pack.
Yeah as I said, the smallest battery wont work with the highest hp spec. But the mid battery could easily be tuned later to the higher hp spec - if newly registered at the authorities
That was the car review I had been looking forward to the most in the last three years and Thomas didn't disappoint. A solid a thorough review as always where we get info about all the things we could ever wish to know about the new ID.3. Thank you for your great work, Thomas!
Its probably also because the old generation in power at VW cant distinguish between useful new tech and marketing jazz. Id be surprised if they get windows running themselves.
VW should have had their North American design centers do the entertainment SW work. All VW had to do was take their Audi SW add few improvements (ie copy Honda or Tesla), add over-the-air updates, and CALL IT A DAY. Yes, Germans love to over-engineer, but they should kept a delicate touch.
I’m surprised that least they left the traditional rear view mirrors, not some fancy rear view cameras as Honda Ev did, that car also had potential to be more affordable with its less gimmicks.
@@baron_xd4633 After 4 months of owning and driving an id3 I can tell you that there's nothing wrong with the buttons and they sure as hell work a lot better than the physical one of my previous car.
Wow, you got a lot of hits on this video! Shame about the interior plastics versus the e-Golf. No felt-lined door pockets either! Not a fan of sliders. And those steering wheel buttons don't sound good. No 360 camera. HUD good. I know sustainability is the ID.3 thing, but the Golf majored on quality & detail which made it a hit for 47 years. ID.3 will have to be very competitively priced to temp Tesla Model 3 customers versus Tesla's vastly superior charging infrastructure. Many thanks indeed Thomas & Team for a great Review. Cheers.
Perceived quality is important for VW - it's what made the Beetle and the Golf, in their day. Yes, I guess pricing will be critical versus quality, and the price of the Audi and Seat/Skoda versions. Plus the equipment levels and cost of options - a loaded up ID.3 with the big battery could be Tesla Model 3 territory maybe? Kia e-Niro makes an interesting price/size comparison too.
@@chuckles069 The ID.3 may be 10k less, but the Model 3 is a best seller, and out sells the BMW 3-series; so VW has to hope to try and get people out of Tesla Model 3's and into their ID.3's - it will have to be competitive and good, and be easy to charge at charging stations, and without having to wrap up wet and dirty cables in the rain and puddles! Or find a charger that is actually working!
And what about the Ford Mustang Mach-E BEV - will that be a competitor? From 40k? It has a fancy interior...! We will look forward to Thomas's commentary on that one! Cheers.
@@kitkat5337 Go look at the statistics in Norway for 2020. After a record breaking 2019 for the Model 3, it's flopping hard in 2020. Sales numbers collapsed after owners complained of bad customer service, delays in repairs and rust forming on their brand new cars. E-tron is the new ruler of the EV market there. You should look at Norway as the trend setter. People want cars that are reliable with good customer service which Tesla can't provide. It might be the best EV out there, but it still won't save it. Also charging networks are already getting close to Tesla's, as other manufacturers finally got their heads straight.
I can see why VAG fired their software chief. This is potentially a great car that is woefully let down by its nightmare interior ergonomics and telematics. VAG can do better!

I was one of the first customers to put down a deposit for the ID3 in May 2019. I even flew over to see the car at the Frankfurt Motor Show in August. No one of the stand could tell me much about the car. In the next few months I asked my dealer for information. Nothing. Then I tried VW headquarters in the UK. Nothing. No specification, no price, no delivery dates. Then I found out the car would not get a heating system for the battery. Then when I heard about the software problems, I realised there were some serious issues and cancelled my order. I now have a Kia E-Niro with better range, a proper thermal battery management system, 7 year warranty, proven technology and a bigger boot. No it does not have over the air updates
Nigel Page well I’m pretty sure the first edition all have the heater included so I’m a bit surprised by your story. It’s just that all other have to order it extra.

Some additional information: - the electric motor is a permament-magnet-synchronous motor, comparable from the principle to the new ones that Tesla is using - While you could score the official range with city and countryside driving by reaching 13-14 kWh / 100 km, highspeed Autobahn driving (effective tested max. speed 165 km/h) resulted in about 23 kWh / 100 km. - The left capactive button fiel on the steering wheel lets you control the cruise control with +10 and -10 km/h by a deep click, and if you just click in a very soft and shallow way, you can control +1 and -1 km/h with the very same button... just have to be very gentle...
In the 2 motors MEBs (e.g. ID-4) is the second motor an induction motor? It would be best like that because for running on one motor, the induction motor is easy to free wheel.
@@jukkahamalainen4938 Nonsense. Lots of EVs use induction motors. E.g. Audi E-Tron SUV, Sportback, S. BMW IX3, Tesla dual motors, etc.. "Just google more." That is all the references you got???
@Foersom None of the EVs you mentioned is very efficient. For example electrically exited synchronous motor (aka SSM) would be much better choice in my opinion. I believe BMW is using similar in iX3. Let’s see what Autogeful think of it once they test it (hopefully) in the near future.
I'm always looking forward to it. I am a Japanese who has been to Autostatt. Thank you for the id3 report. I watched it on TV when I was a kid, so I laughed at Knight Rider.
Hey, VW! Bring the buttons back, not all, but the most important ones. ...and eliminate the black piano from cars. You are selling cars not piano or guitars as Yamaha does. It looks nice in the showroom, but in time it gets scratched no matter as much care you would take.
The first manufacturer to produce a decent EV with more traditional car controls will win a large slice of the market, but then again I’m getting old...
"No buttons it's the future" Tesla did that first. All these crying is such idiot, in my opinion, but everyone have a personal tastes and I respect them. Despite the fact that it's really normal we accustom with a new functionality on a car. In a month use those functionalities will be done automatically
@@mateus.batista The future is made from present which becomes the past tomorrow, but without this past you have no foundation. Maybe you'll accustom in a month, and that's good for you but not all of us. Moreover, saying that all these crying is such idiot is a total disrespect, so try choose your words with much care please. If button would have been a wrong choice you wouldn't have seen them in a cockpit of an airplane or a rally car etc. Imagine a pilot sliding on a tablet. Of course that we are not pilots we are just drivers, but instead of sliding, pintching, navigating through a menu etc on a tablet, it's safer and faster to simply touch a button. However, it is true that a nice and good infotainment system requires agoid and nice tablet, which, by the way will eliminate the phisical buttons, which is good too. Our complain is not to bring all buttons back, but the main ones, and to get rid off that black piano trend which is simply kitsch and unoractical. In conclusion, that's explain why cars are so different and drivers too, and we don't want to spend all our money on bad shaped or build or unpractical cars. Anyway, thanks God that quite soon we will be able to choose between cars, other than Tesla or the ugly kID 3. That will be the future.
Agree totally with your views about the interior and software. To me it seems that someone said ’be radical change everything’ but sometimes change for change's sake isn't the answer. In the UK we have a saying ’if it's not broken don't change it’, the window and wing mirror control gear is an example of this, there is nothing wrong with what they have at the moment. I'm sure they will sort it out, but they must do it quickly.
The best and most in depth review seen so far, and I can't fault the conclusions. The price (in UK at least) is way too high for 1st edition. The prices for launch vehicles (available for general puablic just weeks after pre-boooker 1st edition roll out) looks more reasonable - but even then materials quality need to be upped - and quickly. I sat in ID3 in Frankfurt motor show last year and the interior quality feel I expected would be Golf refined like felt more like low end Kia. Not so good. Not at all.
I know I keep going on about these sliders, but the way VAG are adopting less intuitive and less safe controls is baffling. How do they get through functional and user acceptance testing?!
Its all about the cost. I have had VW/Audi products for the past 16 years and am concerned about what has happened since dieselgate. My newest Golf R does not feel as high quality as the last two and also is missing features while costing significantly more. Its as if the accountants have taken over, beware, this is what happened to GM in the 1980's and look at them now.
@@Jonoponomono I agree about cost cutting, though I'm not sure these sliders will be. New tech is rarely cheaper. They'd have been better sticking with the Mk7.5 infotainment and HVAC controls imho.
Another excellent review, Thomas. I feel I know a lot about this car now. As ever, excellent levels of detail and thoroughness, far better than in the magazines. Keep up the great work 👍🏼
It's like they have a flawed diamond here. Like you said, the hardware is really good but little things that made VW great seems to be disappearing - mainly around perceived quality. Why have soft-touch door cards on the Golf but not on this halo car? As for the haptic buttons - that needs to stop - let the electric motors and tech be the showcase, but keep things that work simply, like a knob and actual buttons stay, so we can appreciate all that innovation. Just think how much money the VW group spend on perfecting the clicks - only to take them away! haha. The interior seems to be letting the side down. Again, VW has an excellent 12" drivers display that I'm sure they could have repacked for the ID.3. That being said, I think I'd still choose this in my dream two-car garage - this as the daily driver, and a GT3 as a weekend car 😍 Great review as always Thomas.
I think they did a great job with this one, I agree about the plastics but for touch controls, how often do you change you side mirrors or temperature? For volume 99% of users will use the controls on the wheel
@Comeonuseyourbrain Definitely agree with some of your points. So long as the interior sound quality is good and not echoing, then I don't care all that much about hard touch surfaces. Sure, soft may look a bit better, but if it's more energy and resource intensive, then it's something we need to phase out. We need to be more responsible stewards of the planet. Wasteful luxuries that add very little to our lives but waste loads of energy need to stop. That said, they could have done a better job with the interior styling I think. OEMs... STOP USING PIANO BLACK! NO ONE LIKES IT! NO ONE!
One reason I saw in another video was, the ID3 will be build CO2 neutral. The soft touch plastic needs a lot of energy to build, compared to hard plastic. Obviously it was also done for cost cutting, but helps to achieve to goals at once. But as long as everything that I touch on a regular basis feels good I dont care, never saw someone on the Autobahn hugging his dashboard because it feels so nice xD
Comeonuseyourbrain in that case why have any soft touch material whatsoever? Why have more powerful versions available and not just the most energy efficient? Why have 20” wheels available, they would surely be less efficient to create and run the vehicle?
Electric motors and battery packs are currently very expensive so car makers save money by cutting down on interior quality. Tesla makes batteries and motors in house so they can save some money on the EV drivetrain. Maybe one EVs become more popular, the drivetrain can become cheaper too.
VW needs to step back a bit, and glance at the Golf 7. That interior was more logical and felt more premium than that of the ID.3 and Golf 8. A lot of clever ideas in their new interior design, but a more conservative approach would have been better and more in line with classic VW. Evolution over revolution.
That is what happens when you have to develop 2 cars that compete with each other and are very different. They have to split the cost over the 2 models until they can ditch 1 of the 2. So it is in the best interest of VW fans to stop buying the ICE car and buy the BEV car, so that VW can get back at having semi-premium interiors. But a lot of those are hating on any BEV and will resist and stay buying ICE cars. So don’t expect VW to get back into semi-premium. People still have a hard time to accept that ICE is a dying bread. The solution to have kept the semi-premium interior was to work with a flexible platform like BMW does. Or like how the golf mk7 had a BEV version instead of a competing BEV model. VW did chose the long term best plan, so it is up to people to make the switch. And after the switch they can get back at what they do the best: offering German premium quality without charging the same German premium price
Hoedje Explains this should have been the Golf 8 too. They could have just developed 2 different floor plans and engine compartments. This , styling wise owes a lot to the original Golf.
@@MaximilianvonPinneberg That would be very wasteful. The most expensive part to develop is the platform. And it is not simple to just switch it the engine compartment since that is an important part of the structure for crash safety. That is why the e-golf didn't have a changed hood, aside of the closed vents in the front. Changing the design is much less expensive. That is how Skoda is cheaper than VW. VW engineers the platform, and Skoda only adapts it to have a better focus on their value for money (and thus bigger bootspace compared to VW equivalent). So it wouldn't have changed much to the costs if the ID3 would share the same body paneling as the golf mk8. And the interior would be the same hard plastic mess since sharing body paneling doesn't change much. Their current approach is the best they could do without giving up the ICE cars. Now they have both an ICE Golf and they have a real BEV counterpart instead of a compliance car. This should kickstarter the switch to BEV and phasing out of ICE. The only way they could have done better was to scrap the ICE version and focus on the BEV. But the average consumer isn't ready yet to embrace BEV. The only alternative way that might have worked, is the convergence platform like BMW uses. But than you get a BEV based on an ICE and you lose a lot of the upsides of BEV, like a shorter hood, a frunk and it is heavier than a BEV on dedicated BEV platform. So for every consumer this should be a clear sign, if you want VW to again get into the more premium interiors, you should stop buying the ICE cars and start buying their BEV. It is the only way they don't have to develop an ICE product and a BEV product that competes with each other. But as long as they have to keep the ICE alive, we will see cost cutting everywhere because of the almost double cost of the split approach. But hopefully, if the ID.3 proves to be reliable, consumers will embrace the BEV future we are entering and quit their addiction to fossil fuel cars
The problem is not an interior. The problem is software and hardware with which it works. The car is not just a car anymore, where engine and drivetrain and other stuff rules. The car is a computer first of all. The car is a software first of all. My conclusion is: VW is at least 5 years (or even 10) behind the Tesla.
Not true. Audi saloons often have them integrated into the boot lid. It is true however that they need to be visible in any possible position. I suspect it being a hatch would mean it is not visible when up
That doesn’t explain why the black pieces below then have to be part of the boot? There is just metal below them so having them move up doesn’t really help?
Not true. You can easily put brake lights on the rear bonnet (boot lid). They do need to have brake lights that are visible even if the bonnet is open. Most cars have split brake lights (some on the bonnet, some on the body) for this reason. Chevy Bolt has an extra set of lower lights below the bonnet on the car body. I imagine they did this so they could save on a separate wiring harness for lights on the bonnet itself. Whatever they did, I'm sorry but it's a bit of a mess. Corners like that are just asking to be broken or bent.

@@francescomarialeo It's not an electric Golf so much that it has the very same external size and its name has been specifically chosen to define it as the Golf's successor. I agree not using the Golf's dashboard was deliberate, and I also agree it was good decision. The one great thing about it is the platform, but that dashboard in a 50K€ car? Hard pass.
Love the new ID3. I have to agree with Thomas. Overall the new VW is great but it's not 100% perfect. I hope they fix the interior issues next time the car is updated. I really hope VW deletes the piano black plastic in the interior and decides to change the door switches and touch controls to something more sensible.
My head is 🌀, Thomas did a great job in showing his frustration without saying a single word except hmm. It's unique.. hmmm 😀 Thomas, please review Tesla Model Y 🙏🏽
ID3 = Model 3; ID 4 = Model Y. Would be good to get his Model 3 review soon. Remember his comments on how nicely the ID3 handled on the highway - that’s the long wheelbase: good to see they didn’t compromise relative to the short overall length. The mirror problem is avoided by doing it the safe way - adjusting them before driving, though his critiques of the controls is valid...
- Michael Schneider - The Teslas to be built in Berlin may surprise you. That said, the visual tricks VW had to pull to make the ID3 look streamlined are truly something out of Detroit - the “need” for light paint on the front half of the C pillar is cuz the black half would be easier to register in your mind as visually awkward (as the back of the car actually is, cuz the bulk of the black upper is more easily seen against the blue bottom). Detroit’s EV version of this is Ford’s e-Mustang, which has similar C pillar black magic (though I think their’s has just a little more design integrity to it). Regarding both of them, I’d like to see how the poor underlying design affects the cars’ CD. But I think the ID3 is fixable, cuz all the weight of the car is low & between the axles: In such a short car, body overhang beyond the axles can be increased ~3cm (this would be the center half of the bumpers, with more severe angles to the outer bumpers wrapping to the wheel wells, so parking & turning would be no harder). Then move the back axle back ~3cm, increasing the wheel base by that much. This accomplishes: (1) an even longer wheelbase for better handling; (2) with the other changes an improved CD; and, (3) remember how tight the back seat seemed & the reviewer’s complaint about excess seat slope? Use all the rear ~6cm lengthening to expand the rear seating space, w/ seats more bucket-like, more leg room & better lumbar support; (4) move back the entire rear cargo area ~6cm; and (5) reshape the rear lines of the car from the tail lights up w/ flowing lines that don’t need the cosmetic coverup you see now. This redo also saves money at the paint shop. Do it at the next model year, along w/ simplification of controls & a redo of some of the interior hardscape. Then sell a bunch of EVs in America at US govt expense $7500/car!
Thanks for telling the Truth, Thomas. I definately agree on the subjects of build quality, materials, controls and concepts of that new car. Both the Golf 8 and that new ID 3 have so many fine details in the technical design, but alle those new sliders and many layers of "windows" you have to pass through really IS totally misunderstood. And I wonder why VW has not found out by themselves while testing all these "developements". This is NOT at all new and hip - it really is a gross step back. To me the Golf 7.5 was a bit conservative, yes, but most everything worked perfectly. So why not wait with all those sliders and fancy menues until the find out what really works. As long as BMW, Mercedes and Polestar can make it better, I want for VW to improve instead of behaving as foolishly as they've done on the lastest Golf and the ID. We certainly need no more steps backward. Neither do we need silly fashions. We appreciate simplicity, functionality, longevity, stability, practicality, safety and would gladly accept a bit of conservatism if it works so well as in the Golf 7.5. I, for myself, certainly hope for VW that they still appreciate feedback from customers who grew up with Volkswagen while they were still sound and strong engineers and remained in contact with the customers. Hey, that takes good more than the internet; namely wholehearted and on-personal-level contact via dealers and quality service and repair shops. Thank you! P
My hope is that VW is only experimenting. Honda did something similar a few years back by removing the volume knob, facing backlash, then bringing back the knob with an arguably improved interface. As the Brits say, ID.3's controls are a bit of a faff. Unfortunately, the convoluted controls alone could be enough to turn me away. I wouldn't want to put up with that day-to-day for years, and I'm someone who loves technology, but some of this is ridiculous.
The one thing that sticks out like a sore thumb to me is the rear windows touch sensitive button... Imagine rolling up to a parking lot barrier, toll-booth or whatever else when you want to open your window you try to feel around for the button, activate the rear windows and when you finally press the button for opening a window it's the rear window that opens... What kind of engineer/designer thought of this?! Some of the "new and innovative" features of auto manufacturers nowadays seem like the come straight out of the head of people who never drove cars nor ever had to clean things themselves. Touch everything and glossy everything has to stop.
Great exterior design, especially from the front and VW have excelled where they always do: in driving experience and construction. Even the innovation in creating an entirely new EV platform is commendable, but their interface design has really let them down. It's not even a software issue, the interface itself didn't look that bad and the 'augmented reality' HUD looks quite exciting but what were they thinking with all those capacitive surfaces and multi-function switches!? Capacitive sliders are almost never the answer to anything, with any luck VW will let people disable them and just use the 'buttons'. Fantastic video as always, literally dropped what I was doing to watch this! Looking forward to more ID.3 and other EV coverage.
Volkswagen auto group does not care one bit about quality or customers, if the shareholders can save 1 cent on a part they will do so. (the engine chains for example)
@KneeGrowObama It's not just the absence of premium materials, they're cutting physical controls that are still found in cheap cars like the Up or Polo. Don't fool yourself, it's much cheaper for VW to program once, then off-load controls for heating and infotainment to the infotainment system, than it is to manufacture physical dials and buttons for millions of cars. For the price they're charging, it's crazy how much they cheaped out on.
Who's going to watch a weekly TV show where they spend an hour reviewing a single car. That's what these youtube channels give us. Top Gear in its own words is a car based entertainment show. It hasn't properly reviewed cars for 20 years and is all the better for it.
I like the interior. Simple, minimalistic but edgy. No need to change it.The only complain is some cheap materials ( doesn t always mean cheap quality thought). But like Thomas said, the choice of material mirrors the price of the car.
I don't always want a comprehensive review but when I do, I go to Autogefühl. Today is one of those days! I rather like the ID3. This or a 2L Golf, easy choice! Danke Thomas.
For the IO I have to say that for some parts you're absolutely right, like for the windows they should have just kept the old control interface. But for other parts like the temperature control I really think you will get used to it because in any other car you also have to look at the control unit to see, if you reached the temperature you wanted and you can can also change it via voice control . So maybe a longtime test will only show if it can or can not be intuitive in the every day use. I'm sure in the past, as touchscreens came into the cars, people have also said that it is very unintuitive and will never find it's way into a car and here we are.
I have the feeling that it is a downgrade in many aspects, im drivin the Golf GTE (Facelift) and the interior is looking much better. This black piano lacquer on the steering wheel looks horrible. I also dont rly get why there is no way to display the map in front of you, sure you can use the hud but for me its a major flaw. The whole thing looks like a copy of a cheap sci-fi cockpit in a trash movie. Styling a bit like Tesla, not my cup of tea. Outside is decent though, if you like it well rounded of course (I prefer a more edgy look).
I really hope VW brings this car to Australia. I’d buy one in a heartbeat despite some obvious shortfalls and cost cutting in the interior. Bring it on VW Australia.
Superb review, thank you! VW need to “simplify” or “die”. This is the key differentiator for both Apple & Tesla. Their configurator is an over complex mess, so is their website and now you have shown their software is too. Simple is not easy to do, especially for legacy process driven companies. They need to get their ass in gear though or Tesla will leave them behind in a cloud of EV dust!
@Z K Not an American, but he is right in a lot of ways. They added a lot of unnecessary new things just for the sake of it, all the capacitor buttons, like that touch button for choosing rear window operation. It is a step backwards for the sake of supposed innovation... I also think that they need to simplify their order system, with much more equipment included in designated packages instead of having to check every single item as additional equipment, makes it too time consuming for the customer during the buying(I once spent 3 hours specing out a Skoda Octavia at their dealership, and they have a system very close to VW) while also making their logistics a nightmare, they have to custom build every car for you due to insane amount of variables you can have with a car. Take Mazda for example, you have no additional options, just different trim levels with engine and color combinations, when you custom order your Mazda there is a great chance they have one already built somewhere, or at least already in the production pipeline.
I have never seen a review of Thomas before, where he found that many things to complain about and still tried to keep his composure to not complain even more. It's hard to believe that VW brings out a new vehicle with such a user unfriendly way to operate it. And that's even without the quality of materials mentioned.
@@naarealy isn't this a preproduction model? The ID 3 starts at under 30k after government rebates. That's seriously cheap and according to a German poster there is an even cheaper version to come. The 50k model is the first edition and that comes with a host of optional extras.
@@almac9203 🤷♂️ At 30k, I would pick this over a Nissan Leaf, or the Korean competitors. At 50k+, I would choose Polestar for the best build and materials, or Tesla for the best technology, efficiency and performance. Either way, I'm glad there will be more competition in this space and I wish the best for VWs EV efforts.
@@naarealy the Polestar is 11k sterling more than the launch edition VW ID3 in the UK. They aren't priced in the same ballpark. You can't compare the usa price for a Tesla vs the German price for a VW because the Tesla in Germany is also more expensive. This is supposed to be a affordable ev for the masses. If people want something nicer, Audi have the very attractive ETron Q4 coming.
I don't like the new trend of touch sensitive buttons everywhere. They are not practical and the drive needs to take his attention away from driving to check if the correct setting was set. Its a safety hazard and i'm glad the reviewer pointed it out. It's a shame this model comes with a cheap looking plastics on the door and that shinny black trim that only looks ok the moment u finish cleaning it.
Agree, eyes off tactile feel is better ergonomics. Reason I won't buy a model 3. iPad on 4 wheels without even a speedo infront of the drivers view of the road. ID3 has much better instrumentation layout that Tesla Model 3

Totally agree. You have to distract yourself from the road to turn off seat heating or to adjust the mirrors. I'm sure that there will be regulations about this after a couple of drivers wrap their new cars around trees while adjusting the climate control.
There is also another advantage of the location of the motor and that is the east west position which is also an advantage as you now have all shafts in parallel. the conventional way of having a drive shaft entering the differential at 90 degrees to the main axel is actually not good as that configuration creates extra stresses that would normally be avoided but is a necessary trade off in the conventional internal combustion engine rear drive layout. This is absolutely the best motor position for a two wheel drive electric car. Another good review as usual.
VW really missed with the interior design including the infotainment hardware .. Should have just replicated the interior of the Golf Mk8 .... I feel like the ID3 was designed for a 2015 market not a 2020 ...
@@jonpetter8921 contrary to the mob ranting life lessons, hard plastic does not equate to bad quality, it more than often means longevity. military and industrial equipment don t do sht quality and they use hard plastic as if there s no tomorrow
why make it more complicated when it can be done in an easier was? Also, you do adjust mirrors while driving from time to time, furthermore if the car doesnt have automatic mirror adjustment when driving reverse, you do that in this situation as well
This was a great review! Really good and detailed. Love that you speak so openly about everything, makes it much more helpful. 10/10 for the review, let's see what I give the car when I get the chance to test it myself.
Another great review Thomas. Particularly like the review style, not so much focus on the EV element but just the new norm. One question; is there cable storage in the Froot? Too many manufacturers overlooking this, Merc EQC for example. Cables lying in the boot, potentially being damaged is annoying and inconvenient. Keep up the good work.

I like it, but we will only get the crossover version in the US. I would want mine to have the headlights follow people when its parked. ;) I might have to smuggle one in from Canada, good replacement for my GTI.
Also, people drive with boot open when the cargo is to long to close the boot. That would be illegal if the lights are not visible, so they have to be at a fixed spot instead of the boot lid
@@Muppetkeeper I can not remember a car that had all the lights integrated in the boot lid. As far as I know in Europe the rear lights should all be visible with the boot open, since people can drive with the boot open when carrying longer cargo that otherwise wouldn't fit in the car

The ID3 is a great car ruined by touchscreens! Why did VW remove the physical buttons and knobs? Touchscreen sliders are difficult to use, distracting and dangerous while driving. The new VW Golf 8 was also ruined by touchscreens too. It is such a shame. As Thomas points out in his excellent review of the ID3 this is a great car from a driving dynamics and build quality perspective, but VW must fix this touchscreen problem - ASAP. They are jeopardising their future by moving in this direction. People like knobs and buttons - especially while driving!
As usual a really excellent and honest review. I love this car and the styling, and you can see from your review just how enjoyable the ID.3 is to drive. The software side of it is a worry, and you are exactly correct that Volkswagen needs to jump on this quickly to sort this out, playing catch up to Tesla won’t be easy, but I’m sure they can do this! Volkswagen also need to take on board useful constructive criticism about the ID.3 so that they can improve them and the driving experience, again as quickly as possible. Volkswagen are in a completely new territory, but I think they have done extremely well so far with this car, but the software side of this is so important and such an integral part of the future of the electric automobile future, and they really need to get this right to compete head on with Tesla!
amazing video... thank you for your effort! The car is lovely too, ideal family car for most journeys. Biggest issue as a fleet user, is that fuel cards limit which charging infrastructure can be used, and this causes issues on longer journeys.
I was at a Tesla location recently and they told me that WLTP can never be trusted. Better to take 80% for real world range (as is the case with the Model 3)
According to them, it doesn't meet the standards of VW and customers. Despite there is no software issue, it has a really poor intuitiveness - too much touch. I know... Having poorly intuitive forces VW to delay the release of ID3 a bit may sound a bit strange. They will learn a lot from this. I really appreciate the business that wants to set high standards.
I love it and want it bad! The ONLY 2 things I don’t like: 1) the interior looks and feels cheap. 2) the instrument cluster! I would have preferred it to be just like the new golf. Why not? It’s already very expensive given those two facts
The ONLY 2 things you don't like are the entire interior and the instrument cluster. So everything you experience and interact with! 😂 I agree btw. That interior is a huge disappointment. The only thing I like is the shell on the outside...
V G exactly. I like the look, and it sounds like it drives amazingly which is important to me... just looks cheap inside. I might wait a bit longer and get myself into way more debt but go with the Audi Q4 etron instead. Pending it’s release and reviews tho.

Agreed. But what other software did he criticise?? He actually criticised buttons, switches, display size, plastics they are HARDWARE.
They're impressed by their cost. A single touchscreen is far cheaper than buttons and dials.
Thomas, you are the voice of the people, we really don't need this "Touch" nonsense in our cars, the driving and attention on the road should be at the forefront of interior car designers. i don't want to turn my steering wheel and activate functions just by touching the surface of the buttons... is stupid.
There is a reason the motor has less horsepower on the smaller battery packs. It's because the smaller battery packs are not rated for the same number of amps. So, you wouldn't want to "tune" your drive motor to the higher spec because it would not be good for the battery pack.

The controls, especially the steering wheel mounted haptics, is an exercise in fixing something that wasn’t broken. A case of style over function.
Style over function SUCKS.
Cheers.
I think it's 10k less...
Cheers.

Some additional information:
- the electric motor is a permament-magnet-synchronous motor, comparable from the principle to the new ones that Tesla is using
- While you could score the official range with city and countryside driving by reaching 13-14 kWh / 100 km, highspeed Autobahn driving (effective tested max. speed 165 km/h) resulted in about 23 kWh / 100 km.
Foersom Induction motor in the front axle is laziest engineering ever. There are much better options available. Just google more.

Not at all.
Thanks for tuning in ✌️

Another excellent review, Thomas. I feel I know a lot about this car now. As ever, excellent levels of detail and thoroughness, far better than in the magazines. Keep up the great work 👍🏼
Great review. I always appreciate how thorough your reviews are.
Why have 20” wheels available, they would surely be less efficient to create and run the vehicle?
besides Co2 emissions its all about costs. How to make a car like the ID.3 possible for under 30.000 Euro.

Electric motors and battery packs are currently very expensive so car makers save money by cutting down on interior quality. Tesla makes batteries and motors in house so they can save some money on the EV drivetrain. Maybe one EVs become more popular, the drivetrain can become cheaper too.

Don’t need a volume knob.
Since i have the first car with an Multifunctional steering wheel i never used the volume knob again.
With a steering wheel volume control, I see no need for a volume knob on the infotainment unit.
What!? Learn from others’ mistakes? NEVER! VW is above all that...
Oh boy oh boy, those stamped indentations in the front bumper are going to be a nightmare to keep clean :P
Get the detailer brush out
That is a red flag on both poor design considerations and poor testing. This is what happens when testing is under camo wrap blankets.
haven't had any problems with keeping those clean in the 4 months I drive an ID.3. the black roof is and tail is much harder to keep clean
@@hoedjeexplains3661 ICE doesn't need to be a dying breed with such technologies th-cam.com/video/s1-soaZn4B0/w-d-xo.html
At 26:50 that’s actually because the break lights can’t be on movable parts of the car. So all just regulations
@@Keneo1 trunk lid is made of plastic, no metal there :)
After having driven thie car for a week, i really felt in love with it. Driving is great an you can get along with the user interfaces very easily.

@@izoyt I had an ID.3 1st max, which is listed for about 49k €, but in germany you get 10k off of it due to governmental support. Which is weird, because it's exactly what usually you can always trust VW to do well!
It 's not ment to be "an electric golf" they are trying new concepts, belive me, they could have just used the golf dashboard and interior if they wanted. I like the idea that they are trying, better than other car manufacturer.
@@francescomarialeo It's not an electric Golf so much that it has the very same external size and its name has been specifically chosen to define it as the Golf's successor. I agree not using the Golf's dashboard was deliberate, and I also agree it was good decision. What wasn't a good decision was to make a terrible dashboard compared to any electric car of its price - and actually, of almost any price.
The one great thing about it is the platform, but that dashboard in a 50K€ car? Hard pass.
Francesco Leo personally I think this is what Golf 8 should have been.
I would have named VOLTSWAGEN and not ID3! Top review as always 🙌
haha great idea =)
Love the new ID3. I have to agree with Thomas. Overall the new VW is great but it's not 100% perfect. I hope they fix the interior issues next time the car is updated. I really hope VW deletes the piano black plastic in the interior and decides to change the door switches and touch controls to something more sensible.
My head is 🌀, Thomas did a great job in showing his frustration without saying a single word except hmm. It's unique.. hmmm 😀
Thomas, please review Tesla Model Y 🙏🏽
Sunil Nair he did say: “this is something i could live without” about the colored ‘wrap’ on the c pilar ;)
Absolutely! I'd love to see him review with model Y.
@Sunil Nair. .. The Fit n Finish of the Tesla will kill'em; Herr Thomas
What were they thinking with those mirror controls?! 🤯

The cost cutting for the sake of technology doesn't look good at all.
Volkswagen auto group does not care one bit about quality or customers, if the shareholders can save 1 cent on a part they will do so. (the engine chains for example)
Better than that Tesla junk. Imagine driving a Tesla that would be embarrassing, sooner take the bus!
KneeGrowObama Very intelligent and logical comment.

Agreed. I think it’s emblematic of the design/decision-making process in a giant, leaden corporation.
I like the interior. Simple, minimalistic but edgy. No need to change it.The only complain is some cheap materials ( doesn t always mean cheap quality thought). But like Thomas said, the choice of material mirrors the price of the car.
No
I don't always want a comprehensive review but when I do, I go to Autogefühl.
I'm sure in the past, as touchscreens came into the cars, people have also said that it is very unintuitive and will never find it's way into a car and here we are.
it feels like i waited forever for this review
Would love to hear your thoughts on pricing and value for money, especially given the alternatives.
I have the feeling that it is a downgrade in many aspects, im drivin the Golf GTE (Facelift) and the interior is looking much better. This
black piano lacquer on the steering wheel looks horrible.
@Z K .. You sexist schwein you!!- LoL. .. Signed, Herr Schneider, .. Vail, Colorado
Tesla wins. Why would anyone by this over a Model 3?

It's hard to believe that VW brings out a new vehicle with such a user unfriendly way to operate it.
And that's even without the quality of materials mentioned.
It's 30k Euro. Were you expecting a Porsche for golf money? This is the people's car. If you want something fancier VAG have Audi's and Porsche.

Good idea on rear wheel drive - no torque steer! VW really going back to its roots...
I don't like the new trend of touch sensitive buttons everywhere. They are not practical and the drive needs to take his attention away from driving to check if the correct setting was set. Its a safety hazard and i'm glad the reviewer pointed it out.

Finally an electric car that actually looks good. Not like some Chinese models.
VW really missed with the interior design including the infotainment hardware .. Should have just replicated the interior of the Golf Mk8 .... I feel like the ID3 was designed for a 2015 market not a 2020 ...

I think the brakes are like that because some countries Eg USA don’t allow them to only be on the boot lid
Also, people drive with boot open when the cargo is to long to close the boot. That would be illegal if the lights are not visible, so they have to be at a fixed spot instead of the boot lid
The USA isn’t getting this car, so it must be for some other reason.

Mir gefällt das auto sehr, man sieht die VW Qualität..tolles Video Tomas!

If the range accords with what VW claim (why would we be nervous about VW's claimed figures?) then it's an impressive car.
