Driving VW's first all-new electric car - what is the Volkswagen ID.3 really like? // Jonny Smith

  • The Volkswagen ID.3 is VW's most important product of the last 40 years. It marks the new era of ground-up electric cars for the German car giant, and with that comes huge investment. This is the first time Jonny has driven a finished version of the ID.3 and it's the 1st Edition that early customers have ordered.
    Jonny only had 2 hours to film the car, so this is more of a Vlog, but once he flew home from Wolfsburg to digest his thoughts, he wrote the following: 'The exterior is pleasant, with its side profile being a grower. The space inside is phenomenal, given its dimensions. The layout of the interior is pleasing, however there are more hard plastic surfaces than the equivalent Golfs. An e-Golf probably feels more premium inside. VW's new infotainment system (which is shared with the new mk8 Golf) is a disappointment. It is so damn confusing to do the simple functions, such as switching on AC, which comes as a result of wanting to reduce physical switches and rely more on touch screens and voice commands. That's a big mistake to me.
    'The ID.3 drives beautifully and has a definite Golf DNA feeling to it. I personally wouldn't bother with the 1st Edition, as it doesn't feel special enough when you can probably spec it better after the initial early wave of orders have passed. No word on the lower ranking spec prices, but the 77kWh battery in a car this size could be a game changer. Handling, brakes, steering and ride are all up there, but it certainly felt less sporty than my Kia Soul, or the Mini Se.'
    Tech spec:

    I get the feeling you were not completely convinced by this car. You never at any point mentioned "game changer" or related phrases. I assume that people who have ordered one have a get out once they have seen it. When you compare it to the Soul or Kona it has lower spec the interior looks cheap and it does not have a 5 or 7 year warranty. I am sure the fact its a VW will carry it a long way but the more astute value for money types may cancel and get a Niro, Soul or kona.

      Agreed, E Niro looks a better bet although the ground up EV element means the ID3 looks better packaged from a useable space to footprint standpoint.
      Looking forward to seeing the Skoda Enyaq, will probably be better again although still lacking that long warranty you get from the koreans as you rightly point out....

      This launch '1st edition' costs £35k, but the base model is something like £25k and if you take into consideration the very cheap running costs (fuel mostly) this starts to become affordable. It depends on how far you drive but electricity as fuel could save more than £2,000 a year in running costs when compared to petrol/diesel. Own an BEV for 5 years and you've taken £10k off the cost. How does £15k sound?

Although I do hate all the Tesla comparisons. While you can’t argue with the drivetrain efficiency, the only Tesla I’d ever go for is the Model S as it’s a good looking car with a good interior. The 3 is just too sparse and cheap feeling to me (let’s not talk about the fact is a saloon) and the x and y body shapes just look weird. And also, while it’s expensive, in reality most people don’t buy cars these days as they get them on lease so the sticker price isn’t all that important for most people.

    Both of these brands are very competitively priced when you look at what you get for your money and, daft though it may sound, I think many people may prefer the more conventional buttons and dials than everything on a touchscreen, like it is in the ID.3?

      I have a Leaf 62 kWh. Would definitily say it is a competitor, even better than this actually. I got it for €29,000 in Norway brand new. Had to wait only 2 weeks for it (was on the ID.3 list for more than a year or so, but the car seems to never show up). If you can live with the chademo plug and not usually drive more than 600-700 km/day, it is great. More comfortable, more space, same performance (214 hp) with an actual working app (Golf has had big problems with its app).

    That doesn’t look like a 35k interior... the plastic “1st” stuck on the dashboard and the screen that looks like after they made the car they realised they forgot to include the screen so bolted one on... my first two cars were Beetles and I was honestly thinking this would have been a new chapter for VW where they could have done something incredible but wow it’s kinda disappointing

    • @thomascrabtree
      @thomascrabtree 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All VAG Group cars use the same standard plasticy interiors and entertainment systems, knobs, buttons, handles etc... It's something that's baffled me since they started doing it 5 years ago or so, who wants to pay for a high end Audi with the same plasticy handles and buttons and nobs as the most basic basement bargain VW UP or Polo... I know it's for cost saving and efficiency reasons but they've taken it too far.

    • @mikeblatzheim2797
      @mikeblatzheim2797 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm guessing the interior is cheaper than in the equivalent Golf because the production of an EV is still more expensive than a similar ICE vehicle. It seems that in order to bring down the purchase price, they saved money on the interior.

    I like how they talk about how they need to make the vehicle as efficient as possible to get better mileage... and they proceed to putting a black roof on it to make people use their AC/roll their windows down more. Great job VAG. Great job.
