  • The 2020 Volkswagen ID 3 is VW’s bespoke new battery electric vehicle. And although it’s not the first EV on the market - it’s not even VW’s first EV - it still feels like a significant car.
    Here we pitch it against its key competitor, which is also a landmark car in its own right and is still the world’s most successful EV, the 2020 Nissan Leaf.
    In terms of range, battery size, 0-60mph time and top speed these two are pitched extremely close to each other. So join our testers as they review the pair and deduce which is best.

    Owning a 2019 Nissan LEAF e+ Tekna myself, I think Nissan knows exactly what everyday driving means. The "many" buttons make it far more easier to adjust whatever you want without looking at a touchscreen, navigating throughout many menu's. So, you can keep your eyes on the road and drive 😉

      To be fair if manufacturer would be smart their Home Screen would be tailored based on what users use more often while keeping essentials on Home Screen.
      basic climate controls can easily be on home screen as well other options. Having customizable home screen is key. You could even make it smart so when temp is below 0c you would have option to turn Steering wheel heating on from home screen and stuff like that . . .
      What I'm saying is Nissan Leaf should have option for bigger tablet where you don't have climate controls ;) that would be neat option where they would integrate climate controls to the tablet while also giving bigger and better tablet to have options ... make the home screen customizable where you can hold some function and it would ask "add this to home screen?" and pressing yes it would add it :D
      you could have cruise control options or even profiled and the best option home screen saved driver seating options >:) press a button and both the driver's seat as well wheel adjust themselfs to your settings and when your wife/husband drives they can click their options :D
      Hey, I'm just saying these are posibilities which I don't think many if any are giving us ;)

    The sluggishness on the LEAF is because you have the ECO on. Turn off ECO and the response will be much faster.

    • @Tron-Jockey
      @Tron-Jockey 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm glad someone else noticed that. The car had to be in ECO mode which intentionally adds hysteresis or slight delay to the accelerator pedal. A lot of drivers experienced only with gasoline vehicles find ECO more predictable and more in line with what they're used to but EV drivers would rather feel the incredible torque. When not in ECO mode the Leaf's accelerator pedal becomes very touchy and some would say, aggressive. The car will surge like a rocket. This makes NORMAL mode extremely noticeable so it makes me wonder how he could not have noticed this.

      @@djlondon7956 Yes, but we know the difference between kW and kWh. EV reviewers should choose their words carefully as many people that watch videos like this are uninformed. It's also disingenuous to compare the battery and charging systems on both the ID.3 and Leaf as if they were equal. Although in theory, the Leaf can take 100kW on a Chademo DC charger, you will be lucky to find them anywhere even here in Norway where we have more Leaf's around than you can shake a stick at - so the best you can assume is 50kW charging. And then there's the rapid-gate issue (the lack of active battery cooling) with the Leaf which is an issue for long distance travelling, exacerbating the lack of 100kw Chademo charging availability. Honestly, there is little equality in terms of technical ability in these cars. And it's why Nissan will release a new car shortly with CCS and phase out the old tech Leaf. AFAIK, Chademo is a dying standard and will become more difficult to find outside of Japan.

    I have to add, a few things you guys didnt mention, which i think are pretty important. The Id3 if taken with the matrix leds has some seriously good light power, secondly the id3 can charge 100 or at 125kwh, and as the bms is good, itll still give you around 22kwh at 90%. The leaf on the other hand has an air cooled battery (liquid cooled on id3). On longer trips especially on the motorway this becomes a problem with the leaf, as its bmw will limit charging power quite alot. Also at home with a wall charger, the leaf will only charge at 6.6kw and the id3 at 11kwh. Also you didnt mention anything about the small turning circle of the id3.

    I find this a strange comparison. The Nissan Leaf seems to have fallen out of times. With a battery that lacks any thermal management, an AC charger that is single-phase only and a DC charger that is both slow and uses an outdated plug, the car does not qualify for many use cases. It is basically a short range city car. But then, why is it so expensive and why does it come with a large battery? The VW, on the other hand, qualifies for both city and long range. It is actually a (small) all purpose family car.

    Great review! I´m now on my second Leaf, switching to the ID.3 any day now (I hope!), so I can recognize how you describe the cars. I have been really satisfied with the Leaf, and if you don’t plan on road trips they are great. BUT: The lack of battery cooling means there is a limit to long trips; after 3 rapid charging sessions my Leaf battery (30 KWH version) is in the red and can take no more, while the ID.3 will let you go on and on. Also, new chargers are being established without Chademo support, and the ones that support Chademo will generally only give you 50Kw, compared to 100Kw for the ID.3.

    • @boy638

      Now these are things I wished reviewers can share. I had no idea you cannot fast charge a Leaf all the time.

    • @supaahflyy
      @supaahflyy 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@boy638 yep he's right. The older leafs have passive cooling which basically means no cooling of the batteries. When you fast charge it cooks the battery which damages it. More advanced charging cars have active cooling of the battery with fans, liquid and whatever which keeps the batteries cool enough that fast charging can keep occuring over and over again without damage (major damage) to your battery.
      Note: you will always damage your battery. Infact you damage your battery just by doing absolutely nothing. So don't be alarmed. It's normal. It's just the hotter it gets, the faster the battery is damaged.
      I'm a Tesla owner for about 3 years and 140,000km of driving later has given me a decent amount of experience with electric cars and if you're in the market for an EV, don't buy the leaf. It has an old plug which is outdated now which means it charges slower and the whole no cooling of the battery. Every new ev as far as I know has active cooling as that is a basic requisite of an EV imo.

    • @hakonklausen4429

      @goodfella21f There are some benefits on the ID.3 compared to TM3: Less cabin noise, higher seating position, very good driver assistant systems compared to a non-finished self driving feature, better headlights, head up display and a more functional hatchback design compared to the sedan shaped Tesla. Yes, Tesla is better on other parts, but these where the important ones for me. Also, the ID.3 has a more environmentally friendly production, and as a European I do like to buy a European brand instead of something from Trumpland. The latter is highly irrational, I know, but in the end the choice of car more often than not is based upon emotion and the need to signal who you are, more than cold analytics.

    • @hakonklausen4429
      @hakonklausen4429 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @goodfella21f Yeah, that was the alternative. But the allure of being one of the first to drive this new initiative from VW got the better of me-:) Also, I needed a car with longer range now, not in a year. But it’s only a three year lease, so by then the TMY with FSD will be even better I guess.

    The one comment that stood out to me was in the Nissan Leaf about this switch in the centre console to enable recuperation and the lack thereof in the ID3. The ID3 has a D (coasting) and B (one-pedal mode). As an e-Golf owner and having driven the ID3, I am missing the manual switch (3 stages in D mode) on the gear stick in the ID3 but the ID3 automatically slows down toward obstacles due to GPS and sensors. So this comment was pretty uneducated.
    What I totally agree with is the VW software navigation issues. It takes too many taps to get through the menus.
    If the e-Golf had an actively cooled battery and faster charging speeds (11/50-100 kWh/h), I would not be tempted to change the car and would consider it the better vehicle. The ID3 is a neat car but they dropped some neat features from the predecessor that really discourage me from buying one.

In addition, in contrast to for example what I felt in a Tesla it is a very light force which is easy to override.
