    Jon McNeill is also a board member of General Motors so he's talking his book. CNBC should have disclosed that. Of course he's going to say that "competition is coming". But when you look at the actual BEV numbers from GM, it pales in comparisons to any other car that Tesla sells. Tesla's core business is far from weak. The macroeconomic situation is globally bad for all automakers in Q1. GM was down -16% QoQ. Tesla was down -20% QoQ as a result of supply chain issues, transportation issues, and forced factory shutdowns. Even if you looked at those as excuses, Tesla did not perform significantly different from GM in Q1.
    It's also laughable that he says there's 2 driverless cars out there. No sir there's only Waymo. Cruise has yet to resume robotaxi services after they hit a pedestrian and dragged them down the road in SF.

      But competition IS coming. Porsche Taycan is objectively a more beautiful desirable object than the dated looking S.
      There are many low cost EV models coming to market from other manufacturers.
      Tesla is the clear leader in software but their hardware/design/build quality isn't clearly better.

    • @thesadboxman

      @@2011hwalker 😂 Porsche has been "coming" for Tesla for years. Still hasn't happened yet and will never happen. Even if Porsche gains more success, it doesn't take away from Tesla. It should be obvious that the auto industry is not a winner take all market. Saying something is objectively beautiful is just ridiculous. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Where are these low cost EVs today? Those have also supposedly been coming for years. Even if they do come, it's unlikely that that company can remain profitable selling at the lower cost. Nobody besides Tesla and BYD have made profit per car. And BYD barely makes a profit at all. You can argue design, but there's a reason why Chinese autos keep copying how Tesla builds hardware and manufactures its products. The Chinese only like copying the leader in an industry. Lastly, the Model Y was the best selling vehicle (ICE/EV) in the world last year. I don't know what better standard there is for determining better software/hardware/design/build.

      @@Funktastico 😂have you actually tried it? If you did you'd know it was severely restricted. Anyone could make a L3 autonomous system if they include enough restrictions. Since I'm guessing you haven't actually tried it, here's a list of its limitations:
      • It only works on 0.2% of roads, and can only be used on highways
      • The car can only travel 40mph or slower
      • Can only be used at temps above 40°F
      • You can't be the only car on the road
      • The weather must be good (no rain)
      • Must be daytime
      • No construction zones
      Tesla FSD's limitation is that the driver must be attentive with their hand on the wheel. It will work at least 95% of the miles driven. Some FSD users don't have to intervene 99% of miles driven. It does not have any of the Mercedes L3 restrictions listed above.

And don’t think GM is gonna flood the market with these things. Each dealer will have one or less on hand at any given time, which will allow them to add their ‘market adjusted’ price increase. Maybe they will just have an auction every month or so for the one EV they will get. They don’t want to sell EVs at all. GM doesn’t want to make EVs in any great quantity.

    PHEV...all the downsides of ICE ( fluid replacement, oil changes, etc) and downside of EV ( battery replacement is expensive)...only upside is range.

    • @FabioCapela
      @FabioCapela 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Actually, if it's a properly made PHEV with a durable battery and good electric range, enough to allow most drivers to complete their daily commute on just electric power, the fuel-using engine should only engage very rarely, when its extra range is truly needed, offering most of the fuel savings of EVs with very little degradation of the fuel engine. This, in turn, should make the maintenance of the ICE part of the hybrid much lower, as it will get very little use.
      A bad PHEV, on the other hand - like one with low battery range, or that uses quickly degrading NMC cells - is bound to be a headache.
      PHEVs have smaller batteries than BEVs, so they cycle faster, and thus degrade faster; every time you drive the whole pure electric range of a car it "uses up" one cycle from the battery, so if you are driving a thousand miles, that will be 4 cycles if the car has 250 miles of electric range, but 40 cycles if it's a PHEV with 25 miles of electric range. This is why NMC cells aren't such a good idea, the number of cycles they last is fine for battery EVs with larger batteries, but for PHEVs they degrade too fast and might need replacement, so a chemistry capable of doing more cycles - like LFP - would be much better.
      (This is why most times you hear a nightmarish story of expensive EV battery replacement, it's a hybrid rather than a BEV. The battery of a BEV should last enough to not need a replacement for the whole life of the car, more so if it's an LFP or, in the near future, Sodium battery.)
      Also, if the battery is too small to account for the daily commute then it will need to make constant use of the fuel engine; it's the situation you described, where you lose much of the fuel economy of a pure EV while being saddled with most of the maintenance of an ICE car.

      Rubbish. Most people travel less than 50 miles a day. PHEV’s are excellent for that. Then if you need to go long distances or tow something a proper engine is there for that. EVs are useless for anything that requires hard work

    • @FabioCapela
      @FabioCapela 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@darrenprior6339 It's a matter of having the proper specs. Few things do harder work than a long haul truck, and over 10% of those trucks sold in China are already electric (as well as about 20% of lighter trucks); EVs with adequate specs are clearly capable of doing the hardest work you can throw at them.
      Hybrids, including plug-in ones, have another big issue: the smaller the battery is, the faster it will cycle (go through all energy in it), and thus the faster it will need replacement. As a result, the small battery on a PHEV would need to be replaced multiple times before the larger one on a proper BEV degrades.
