He also has a positive basis. It’s different to hold a company while you’re losing your initial investment vs losing some of your profit. If he sold he would owe over $1 B in taxes.
Tesla is still over valued. It’s just all the musk fan boys buying the stock after he spoke on the earnings call. People are quick to forget the last earnings call where musk said BYD was beating Tesla. That has not changed. The cars don’t hold their value well and autopilot is terrible. If the government stops tarring BYD and subsiding Tesla their sales will plummet.

Smart, yeah, but it doesn't seem like he's had much (any?) experience with FSD. Elon's been promising something like level 4 for years now, and it's never been close. It's closER now, but we aren't there, even with the latest version. I'm afraid it's not going to be good enough for a robotaxi for a long time. I still have a substantial TSLA position, but I've lightened up on it.

And he was right. If you expect volatility to deliver 10x to the upside the you have to accept the downside vol as well.

Current FSD is great as a toy for now, key point is that the human driver HAS to pay attention and be ready to take over at any moment. That is Level 2 or 2.5, not nearly enough for a robotaxi. Waiting for the moment when Tesla will take responsibility (assume liability) for the accidents where FSD was involved...only then it will be FSD.
I am a Japanese investor, fully agree with Ron's points and own 900+ Tesla stocks. My question is why do so many Americans, or at least American media, look so happy nitpicking Elon and Tesla? Macroeconomics will drive a much lower cost product soon. That could bring an existential threat to Tesla. BYD is a real threat both in China and in Europe. Tesla’s FSD is a no-go other than the retail investors for the time being. But overall, its earning will plummet and tesla could get a “no buy” status.

This response shows a fundamental misunderstanding of the current state of vehicle autonomy at Tesla. He clearly does not drive one daily. There is hope for FSD/Robotaxi, but it's years out at the earliest, unless released in very narrowly scoped circumstances.

LAST WEEK I CALLED An Uber to get me to the airport in Fort Lauderdale and a Model 3 showed up. I asked if he had the latest FSD "supervised". He said yes and that he'd been using it regularly since the free trial. I said engage it and let me see for myself how far along this is. A 20min drive through city and highway traffic with some sections really tight and busy..."zero" interventions!! Like Ron says, this is now!

I own a EV but this guys comparison between a motor and engine being $1k vs $5k is delusional…yes the motor is 1k but most EVs have 2-4 motors…and not just that but even if only 2 motors they have a $20k battery pack. The gas car has a $1k fuel tank. So combined the gas car cost $6k between the engine and fuel tank that feeds it and the EV costs $22k-$24k for the motor and battery pack that powers it.

Not now from my experience. My model S is using a free month of FSD and it is disappointing. My 2017 Model S with camera upgrade has not been paying attention to my preferred routes home. It wants to drive where it thinks it should drive. I have a preferred route for a reason, and it should be paying attention. Also the car hesitates annoyingly when pulling into an intersection sometimes. For this to work well the car has to be at least as good a driver as I am. Right now it just makes me nervous the entire time.

If you don't want to crash and burn, you should seek the advice of a fiduciary counselor when you first start out. Because their entire skill set is based on going long and short at the same time, they employ a profit-driven strategy based on individual risk tolerance.
Ron is missing the biggest hurdle for Tesla: there is much more robust competition now and there will be even more in the future. None of his arguments here are convincing me.
Just like resistance to fully electric cars, there will be so much resistance for completely autonomous vehicles. I think people will always prefer (at least for the next 100years), a car that they can control but has self driving capabilities….a hybrid function basically.

To answer the guy's question regarding when the autonomous driving capability comes, it's been here for a few years for a lot of Tesla owners that bought the FSD (not the stepped down version called "Autopilot". I know... You'd think it's the other way around). My Tesla has been driving to work and back home, for 2 years now, using the Beta version (basically, assisting them to collect data and issues that came up). The recently upgraded version is called "Supervised", and it drives more like a human. I would look at it like a NEW student driver for the Beta version, and the Supervised version is like an advanced student driver or a newly licensed driver.
That's my analogy. I haven't heard anyone, or even Elon Musk, or his team publicly used that analogy. I think it's better if you can relate to people for easier understanding. Cuz honestly, your average people are still pretty dumb. They only see black or white, on or off, go or no-go, etc. It's a new technology, so take it easy, it won't be perfect. It will be more perfect, at driving, than a lot of average humans though. 😉

Be patient. Tesla will be a multi-trillion dollar company but it may go down to $135 before it go above $1000.

This fsd has to be funded by elon or a research fund or an institute on non profit or smtg. But to expect people to chip in and loose money until then is not a viable option. Was in the market shopping for a new vehicle, Model Y vs Lexus RX, pricing a bit higher for Lexus, but the quality ride with its amazing suspension and how quite the cabin was on highway speeds, was the deciding factor to choose Lexus over Tesla and not having to be worry running out of battery juice when going on long trips and looking for charging stations with long waiting lines.
Once there is more infrastructure, might give EVs another look.

Fyi, the main front camera has a built-in heater. Back camera really only gets blocked when on the hwy and it's yucky out). Fsd beta drove me around 90% of the time this past winter and that was with V11. V12 is truly mind blowing. My wife and I rarely have disengagement now, and when we do, none of then are critical. Fully autonomous driving isn't here yet, but it for sure is super close!!!!
