- As much as I appreciated the stability and peacefulness of Rwanda, I wanted to see another side of the country. To find that, I went to Nyamirambo, a working class Muslim and immigrant neighborhood in Kigali. In addition to a lively nightlife scene, Rwandan friends had told me that supposedly there were thieves there. There was only one way to find out.

Showing an interest, but even more showing you have knowledge about someone elses culture/country legitimises it, and makes it seem more important to them. I'm sure Izzy was shocked that Tommy knew anything about Rwanda, or the language, but was very flattered with everything he did know.

Poor guy said he was still affected in the head from the trauma, he probably doesn't know that sort of trauma requires help from a professional to get over and even then, you might never fully heal from it. But he's doing he's best and that's all he can do. God bless him and everyone affected by that genocide.
Stayed in Nyamirambo the first time I was in Rwanda. Did not know it had a bad rep though a colleague and people who later became acquaintances had somewhat similar reactions when they heard I was staying there. Beautiful neighborhood. What I remember mostly about it are the roadside mechanics, numerous tailor shops, huge foreign contingent operating these premises and countless guys trying to sell you very trendy shoes on the street. I also remember the mosque, including the one that was opposite Camp Kigali and hearing prayer calls in the morning. My other enduring memory of Nyamirambo, and Kigali generally, were the short distances, I remember walking to Nyabugongo, Kyovu, Mille Collines. I actually walked to town most days to have a meal or run an errand. I would also do a jogging circuit that ensured I climbed the Mille Colline hill on my way back. Thank you for taking us with you on this journey. You showed us the other side of Rwanda. Would want to visit these other places/prefectures next time I'm there as opposed to hanging out in Kigali the entire time.

Nyamirambo is the only place you find street food in kigali. In Rwanda culture people don't eat in public.
Nyamirambo somehow has figure out how have it be acceptable.

That’s true, that’s what we use to call it but as we were introduced to other people who also ate it, they all had their own definitions of it but I mostly hear fufu

If time and the right woman comes along, then that's fine but for now he is good the way he is . It being married is not making one less adequate, valuable or respected . What did you expirence?
@@jumpy2xstreaming I spent several weeks there in 2016. The roads weren't in such a neat state back then but also very clean - we also saw the groups of workers cleaning them. Uganda was much more littered in comparison. From Kigali, we traveled to Kibuye, stayed a while at Kivu lake, visited some markets at tried zambasa, stopped at the Ndaba Falls, Gisenyi and then traveled back to Kigali to fly to Entebbe. Then we spent a while traveling Uganda and then crossed the border back to Rwanda to get back to the Kigali airport. I traveled in a group of 3-5 muzungus and one Ugandan (my sister-in-law). I wasn't the only unmarried member of the group - my mom is a widow, the best man was also single - but everywhere we went, I was constantly hit on by the locals. Sometimes it was funny, sometimes just awkward (e.g. when getting the visa at the airport..the guys there couldn't understand why I wasn't married and questioned me more about that than my travel plans..also they claimed my English was subpar because I couldn't understand their whispered conversation in Kinyarwanda..they kept laughing about my confusion and kept me hanging (regarding visa) when all my other travel group members who spoke poorer English had already received their visas). Not saying all Rwandans are trying to hit on single muzungu ladies. But I was shy and really had some trouble fending them off without being offensive. We tried to travel light, we didn't dress wealthy, we donned jeans and t-shirts and didn't wear a lot of accessories except sunglasses and hats. Locals still huddled around us everywhere we stopped and asked for 1000 Rwanda-Francs, beverages and cigarettes. Also the children! I understand they think every muzungu can spear a dime but it was more the way they asked than that they did ask at all. Like we couldn't even sometimes get our bearings first and try to enjoy the landscape. They performed random bits of songs and wanted payment. But what confused us most was that all the Rwandans we met except the ones at the weddings were hard to read and tried to either rip us off or bend the truth quite creatively. Examples: a chef at the hotel at lake Kivu told us the lake was closed instead of admitting he didn't know how to fry the fish my brother had ordered for dinner (it was on the menu, btw). One of our drivers said he would refuel the car, we gave him money so he could get a hotel and refuel the car but instead he slept in the car and gave the money to his family. We found out because we went on a trip the day after and because the car was still out of fuel we had to refuel and the guy didn't even know where the tank was. If he'd told us he needed more money for his family, there would have been a way but we appreciate honesty. The weirdest thing happened when we went back to Rwanda. I had gotten a 4 week visa at the Kigali airport but was told it was no longer valid. That wasn't true, my mom had the same visa and they accepted hers just fine. My sister-in-law told me they hoped to be bribed so I could cross the border - as only one of the group who they wanted extra payment from. ...Sometimes we just shrugged it off but the creative truths did annoy us at one time or other. The Rwandan people were a constant enigma for us. Which is why I'm glad Tommy showed me they can also be very fun and easy-going and polite.
@@ch3shire_kat your experience reflects more your attitude than anything else. I've worked in tourism industry for quite sometimes and I can ensure you that what you said doesn't match what I know about the country that I was born and raised in. For example what you called bribing the immigration agent doesn't make any sense. Are you aware that the day you left for Uganda in a team, all your information were recorded and stored so that when you come back the data are still there and they can easily verify with who you crossed with? It doesn't make sense to ask a bribe only one person in a team while they can ask 3-5 traveling together. My conclusion is you maybe had an issue that took time to resolve and they resolved it without making you turn back to where you were from as it most of the time the case in western countries.
What exactly did you experience cause unless it was in the 90s then I don't know

Big up to Tommy, this was a nice video, I live in Rwanda but I was interested and curious how your video would end. Hope you didn't forget tipping this kind guide, he had to take you throughout your journey at your request, rwandan are very reserved, most of them try to keep their noble spirit of not begging. I bet this guy, doesn't earn a wage of more than 60$ per month for the job he mentioned, so, handing at least 5k RwF (~5$) to someone who might have a family would be great.

I'm really impressed that you learn Kinyarwanda since it is much more difficult than kiswahili. You get by in french fairly well and know a little bit of russian. I wish more americans were like that. I speak eight languages including french and russian. At my age (77) even learning swahili is a formidable task.
Rwanda has an interesting culture. Usually people are very well behaved and do not talk loudly. And you should sit when.you eat and never litter.

I’m from Nyamirambo, when I read the most dangerous neighborhood! I was like oky lemme watch and see what’s up…. Turned out it’s the same thing over and over… coffe shops, having chats with strangers, and basically being an African. That’s what’s up with Rwanda 🇷🇼 also big up to those guys who corrected him about war.. it was genocide.
Is your neighbourhood really seen as the most dangerous in Kigali? What do you guys think of that? I feel like people all over the world often feel as though the poor areas of their cities are more dangerous than they actually are. It's the same in my hometown too. People say that my area is really dangerous, but I never encountered any problems there at all during the 21 years I lived there.
Sure it was a genocide but it occoured during a war started in 1990, am I right?

My mom made the transition to the Netherlands in 98 , i was 12 years old at the time.
Life has been good and I'm an adult with an interesting life.
I feel blessed seen you take the journey to Rwanda.
Many family members there also and strong people over there.
Rebuilding of the country Rwanda is great and many of untold traumatic event in the past.
As the future can heal in time, peace to the world.
I felt terrible for that poor man who lost most of his family. Such a needless tragedy💔😔
Many Rwandans experienced the same thing. Everyone lost someone, most lost many family members.
So sad 😞
