Don't worry my Nigerian friends, this isn't the end of the adventures in Naija. I'm sorry I didn't make it to Abuja or Calabar or Port Harcourt or Kano or (insert city here) on this trip, but you can only do so much in 30 days. You'll see me there next time, in parts 2 and 3.
In the meantime, if you'd like to see more, Tayo Aina is pretty good at making videos on Nigeria (and everywhere else). And Miss Josey has plenty of good videos too, and they're shockingly even more African than mine.

As a Chinese working in Nigeria, I studied in the United States for my undergraduate and master's degrees. Comparing China, the US and Nigeria, I find that the problems here are not just the corruption, wealth gap and uneven development that can be seen on the surface. It is more focused on investment in infrastructure, investment in education, the credibility of the federal government, the execution of local governments and so on. The political system is only a small part of the problem. The forced replication of federalism but the inability of the people to understand their rights and obligations with the level of education has led to politics becoming a game for the rich and a tool for enrichment. It is the most populous country in Africa and has the greatest potential for development and the greatest demographic dividend, yet the country is less than 10% industrialised which I cannot understand.

Odabo Tommy, you have done a great job covering Lagos and Ibadan in 30days, yet you haven't seen half of southwestern Nigeria. Like you said later in this video, Nigeria is not for the faint hearted, it's honestly a stressful and interesting country. Your farewell message almost got me emotional, you have done well by coming here to see for yourself the situation of things here. I wish you a safe trip back home and a renewed energy to comeback for more exploration of Nigeria.

Mauritala Mohamad airport is Nigeria's shame, probably the most corrupt airport in the world. The airport has been like that for decades and nothing is being done to curb the rampant corruption. This is the point of entry for most visitors to Nigeria, it's a pity that their first impression of Nigeria is that cesspool of corruption we call our airport.

They made me cry in 2013 when I landed in Nigeria after so many years away. They basically threatened they would not let us in until we do this and that.. My son finally lost patience and told them we are ready to go back...'don't let us in....we are ready to leave', he told them. He snatched back the $50 they demanded and I gave them. But anyway, I was glad I had my son with me....because like he said, "they saw me coming". Next time we went back in 2017, we wisely flew into Abuja, and then took a domestic flight down South. Horrible place, MMIA.

Wow! Amazing TH-cam reporting. This is probably the most intimate picture of a slice of Nigeria that I've ever gotten. The big question is how big is this slice as a representation of modern day Nigeria? I have no idea. But it was very fascinating to watch. The issue of your driver leaving a thumbprint on the camera lens was a hilarious side note. There's a theme that keeps popping up with Western TH-camrs in Africa: the African habit of depending on handouts and or bribes. As an African outside the continent, this gets to be quite embarrassing after a while. But what can one do? Misrule from the top will do that to a continent.

Yes, nigerian airport (especially MMIA) is a definition of rowdiness and a cesspit of corruption, the 2 rolled into 1. Even those of us who live in the diaspora dread having to go through that terrible airport. The officials there are shylocks with blood dripping lips. Their activities receive blessings from the very top in Abuja, so the corrupt practice is not likely to stop anytime soon.

Im so happy my fellow Americans are exposing these things. So when i was at the airport coming in Oct this year. I was approached i paid 70 dollars US, so that three men can help me take my bags through so i don't get checked. It was my first time coming into the country. And even though people warn you. As a woman coming in by yourself they will definitely get you. My fiance and his friend were outside and couldnt come in. But im hip to it now. The corruption is much there. Its unfortunate. But i go the next time not a dime will come out my pocket. You can tip but when they ask for a specific amount " Don't Pay it" its their job to do.

I have never experienced more stress than I did at the Lagos airport. My second time leaving it took almost 4 hours to get the gate, it is always that level of chaos. I wasn’t extortioned but another American women with two small kids was and she almost missed the flight. She had to pay 200$ for them to release her, she was so upset when she finally arrived at the gate. The airport bit was really stressful to watch. I came here after watching a clip of this video from a different TH-camr (Sassy Funke). I'm genuinely anxious visiting Nigeria again (and I was born there). The Airport needs sorting out. We and the govt are all corrupt. We tend to blame the govt but giving them the bribe only exacerbates the problem. I'll make sure to give myself enough time when travelling and I'll be taking names and filming. The madness has to stop.

Wish you a safe trip back home Tommy. Indeed Nigeria is a very stressful country. It’s sad that you had to go through all that, but I can bet that you didn’t get half the stress regular Nigerians go through because of your skin color, they will usually be scared that a white man would have some serious security back up if they mess with you too much. It’s a lot better with East Africans. But I hope you start from kano or calabar when next you come. You will witness an entirely different Nigerian. As you leave I hope you don’t end up having a general perception of Nigerian, drawing inspiration from Lagos. So long Sabbatical. Hope to see u soonest back in Nigeria.
