Small white female here, former photojournalist. Detained for many hours in Sudan, incarcerated in Egypt for ten days and too many other stories. This stuff is no joke. Do NOT think your embassy will help you. Photographing government buildings, bridges, military zones are all a no go. White men do convert to militant factions of Islam and Christianity etc, and do bad things. Kenya has been VERY HARD HIT by terrorism. Hundreds of people killed in 1998 near the US Embassy, shopping mall in Westlands etc etc etc. The vast majority of tourists stay in the tourist side of town. To do something different is a red flag. I believe that many times cops are seriously concerned, but when they realize you're 'ok', they need to SAVE FACE. Saving face is VERY important in these cultures. The flip side is if you're a mzunu/khawaga/gringo, it becomes the most entertaining thing all month and it turns into a circus. Asking for bribes is not ok. Offering bribes doesn't necessarily get you out of a bad situation. Do the adventure, be aware bad things can happen.

Police everywhere have mental issues. It's work related. Their work involves criminals so they have to think like a criminal. They live in the twilight zone between hard criminals and honest citizens. They are not your friend.

Fascinating and gutsy. But, yep, a quarter of a million people around the world will make a judgement about Mombasa from this experience. It was heartening to see the caretaker lady show so much concern toward a stranger in her country. Frankly, it’s probably the same everywhere. I lived my life in very tourist-heavy regions of the US and when I saw the cops with tourists getting a little aggressive, or the tourists looked scared, I, like many others would freely step in to try and help lower the anxiety. It’s frightening.

@Paul Z Very good idea. This was at the least an immigration issue. Unlike the United States, most countries, the burden of proof is on the person to provide citizenship and visa documents to the police when asked. If you do not have them, they may detain you.

@7:08 Honestly that does sounds like a good reason. Not to me, but different thoughts can cross other people's minds. I myself have a beard, and every time I'm abroad I think of the possibility of being profiled because of it. One time I was at a church in Spain, and cops asked me for my documents outside. Once they realized I came from the States, they didn't care much. The fact they arrested you for 4 hours was a bit extreme.
Its shameful that the people who allowed you to take pictures are the same ones that called the police to arrest you. Secondly it does not need rocket science to know who you are. Your video clips of adventures are on your youtube channel. By the way the church fellas were probably worried because there have been incidents of church bombings in the past. All the same they should have taken the initiative to ask you not to take shots. Pole sana kwa hayo.
So not taking pictures makes churches safe? No one have camera in their cellphone cause pople there are not using such phones, there is no google earth, no one can have hidden camera and there no other way of scouting. Therefore bad fellows have no way to check place out before planning how to blow it? Right, that "make sense". Not.
" Its shameful that the people who allowed you to take pictures are the same ones that called the police to arrest you" Utter nonsense. They did the right thing not to confront him but to alert the police. Confronted, a terrorist could have blown their heads off. They want to keep their city safe. As you would too. If several people had acted on their suspicions, many innocents in the Manchester Arena would be alive today.
Fast you speak very good Swahili and this is the reason they feel you can be a terrorist. If you were speaking English no one will harass you. So in Kenya speak more of English. Anyway your channel is growing despite the difficulty.
If I saw a bearded foreigner with a camera, and find that he's living in Mombasa's Old Town, I would call the Police. The Police held you for a very short time! Thanks for showcasing Kenya and shaving that beard. Karibu tena.
Why don’t you go up the coast? It is so beautiful. Nyali, Malindi, Kalifi. Vipingo. Lots of very inexpensive places to stay and everyone is giving huge discounts because of the lack of business. No one would understand why you would stay in a place in the old town instead of the beach.
That went very well with the cops..By Kenyan standards, Trust me it would have gone alot worse. Just be careful when recording in some place, get express permission from the building or site administration and not the guards. Anyway i know this trip will be memorable..😊 Your African trip has so much suspense, from Mwanza to Mombasa, Hence will be the most memorable. Otherwise enjoy the rest of your Kenyan trip..👍👍👍
I hope you left Mombasa before posting this video, for your own safety. These guys know your channel, name, and where you’re staying now, so if they see this video while you’re still in Mombasa, someone may cause some trouble for you.

Thanks Tommy for this video. I will NEVER go to Kenya after seeing this. I will spread the word to other westerners too. Let their tourist industry collapse. @S M If after watching my videos you really think my mission is to stop people from coming to Kenya, why are you even watching? I show the good and the bad, I don't make fluff pieces
If this happened to a black man, he would say in the video that it happened to him because he is black. And how could that not happen to a white man 100% hahaa you are the best as far as African videos are concerned. I hope you keep working
If it happened in America that’s what the black guy would say. You can’t try that anywhere else except in America. Happens a lot when I go back home to visit.
Sometimes you have to be patient when in a foreign country. Things are done in a different way. At least the police did not demand a bribe to set you free. From your story when you show them all the evidence they wanted you were free to go.

Kenyan vloggers will tell you how hard it is to vlog in Kenya quite a number of people get arrested .This is all due to the terrorist attacks so they are quite strict when it comes to filming places especially malls . I have been watching your videos for a while and i have to say i feel you are sometimes somewhat culturally insensitive, dude, Kenyan police, security guards etc are unhappy about people walking around randomly filming in cities in general. This is the case in many African countries and is not unique for Kenya. In case you have been missing the context and reason for this, is that Kenya have had several terrorist attacks in the past from Al Shabbab all over Kenya, where the terrorists have been walking around filming before the attacks. After this happened, filming on public places have basically been prohibited. Me as a white person living in Europe know this already only having visited Kenya once. You have to smarten up and see all this in context. Your language learning skiils are amazing but maybe you should focus on some cultural adaptation and sensitivity. And in case you didnt know, No mzungus stay in Old Town anyway. No wonder they were a bit edgy. If this wasnt enough, there has been kidnapping etc going on in Mombasa recently so anything looking a tad out of the ordinary would catch their attention. You have to see all this in context and maybe read up a bit on current events and resent history context on the places you travel to. All the best.
Best reply so far. Sabb is not as culturally aware as he thinks he is. This episode should make him rethink his attitude" They "dragged" him to the station, did they ? And delivered him back for his own safety ? You rarely get that in Europe or USA. And all despite him refusing to eat with them and hear their stories ? Make friends ? Interpreted it as a bribe request? At least one Kenyan has said that's not what it was.
You have to be careful where you film always. Because of the constant threats of terrorism we face as a country it is understandable that the security system is hyper alert. I would advice to always take a local especially in areas or situations that you're not familiar with. Alternatively as one dude below commented, notify the police in advance so as to minimise chances of these nasty situations happening to you. Rule of thumb to remember, its always going to be risky filming in areas that historically in kenya have been key targets for terrorism.
There is no situation where it is right to kidnap someone off the street because they are taking a video. The terrorism excuse is bullshit for profiling people and taking away their human rights. How can they detain him for the whole afternoon because he has a beard? Are you mad?
Ok just to be clear, I understand that there are problems with terrorism in Kenya, and the police have a job to do. But I'm not cool with being detained for 4 hours and being treated like a criminal just for walking around with a camera. That's crazy. I wouldn't support the police grabbing random people off the streets in the US either, you can't run things like that
If you understood how serious terror was then you would not even walk around with a camera here. Even Kenyans don't walk with cameras everywhere.

Very well said.

Yawn
True. I am surprised he didn't think of this .
There is no situation where it is right to kidnap someone off the street because they are taking a video. The terrorism excuse is bullshit for profiling people and taking away their human rights. How can they detain him for the whole afternoon because he has a beard? Are you mad?
