Returning To My Old Home In The Argentine Hood (#98)

  • Ah, Argentina. I have a special relationship with this country and it's capital, Buenos Aires. I spent a solid 2 years of my life there, in spite of having no blood connection to the country. And so it was, after hearing that the Argentine government had finally reopened the borders to international travel, that I had to go back to visit. The last time I had been there was back in 2014, right in the middle of an economic crisis. This time I returned to find an even bigger economic crisis than last time. But such is life in Argentina. Money isn't everything here.
Last time, being that I was a poor student, I lived in what many Argentinians considered to be a rough neighborhood. I wanted to go back and maybe even find my old home, the place that made me into the international man of mystery that I am now.

And now for something a bit different. Argentina was the first country I ever lived abroad in, way back in 2008-9. I liked it so much that I went back again in 2014. Before closing out 2021, I had go back and visit some old friends, and I found some time to do some filming along the way.
This won't exactly be the most African country we visit (other than the tango), but we'll make it work. Vamos.
Oh, and if you're in Argentina and need some hot sauce, check out @lagrimadeldiablo on Instagram.

My wife and I went Argentina in 1999, we were in the Rio Del la Plata area near Buenos Aires. The people were amazing and so kind and the city itself was as amazing and beautiful as the people. We were really surprised by some of the local customs, such as eating dinner after 9 at night and the night life came alive then, so busy. We ventured into the business area, the hundreds of storefronts, excellent restaurants, jewelry stores, leather good shops and clothing stores. It’s really an amazing country that has been thru so much and yet the people have held on to their laughter and love of family and culture. Hope to go back some day. We ventured out into the countryside and found that same enthusiasm for life and love of people, so blessed to have been there. God bless Argentina!!!

When I lived in Argentina from 2002-2004, the older generations would ask me how I liked the country. And after I’d tell them I liked it a lot, they would all inevitably tell me, “you should have seen it 30, 40 years ago. It was an amazing place. Sadly, no more.” This was a very typical conversation. And, I have to admit, all the buildings and parks and things look like run down versions of something that was once amazing and plentiful. But regardless, I love Argentina, and even married into an Argentine family here in the US.

There's something about Argentina, a certain tragic, romantic quality, some feeling in the air when I was there for a year. I wonder if the people want to get out to the beaches of Brazil, sea and nature especially in winter as I felt a bit sick in BA but that's probably because I did it wrong and ate to many pastries and didn't know where to get veg on the go.

I discovered Tommy's Sabbatical videos a few months ago and have enjoyed all of them. This one of his old neighborhood in Buenos Aires is my new favorite of his videos. I have always wanted to go to Argentina. I am a retired teacher in California, so I have the time and money. The section where he visits his old apartment house touched my heartstrings, as I could relate to the longing, a bit of regret, unrequited love. The lovely Bohemian life style of the young men happily living there now, from Venezuela, reminded me of the more carefree Bohemian days of life in the beach towns of California and San Francisco forty years ago in a more enlightened time, with less emphasis on money and status, more real.

The city looks European because the majority of the Argentina´s population is ethnically European, who came during the early and mid XX century. The immigration was overwhelmingly big: we have the most bigger community of Italians in the world (60% of the population) and the most bigger community of spaniards (some say 30%), the rest are Germans, French, Britains (mostly Welsh, we even have towns where are the majority and speak their language), Syrians, and a very small aboriginal community, who are not native of the terrory (they are from our neighbourg´s territory, they migrated). Our ancestors carried with them the European architecture to a city which was pretty small at that time. Thus, the whole capital resembles mostly to the French and English architecture.
Argentina was, in its good times, always compared to Australia. Australia resembles a lot, socially, to Argentina since both experienced the same immigration influx. Also, economically (in terms of what kind of products they export) are similar. Because of that, even nowadays you will find essays that try to compare why Argentina couldn´t keep their booming economy as australians did.
That said, we do have high inflation, but it´s a phenom which is a special case in the world. Our inflation is consistent and increase the prices all the weeks, but despite that phenom, our economy keeps afloat.

@@LucianoVonH Amerindian population is not so small: like 20% of the population is primarly amerindian (very mixed in most cases). And even before the immigration from other South American countries, it was important.
Whites of European origin that don't have a visible level of ®@¢¡@£ (I can't use that word because my comment get automathically deleted) mixing are like 55/60% of the population, then there is like 23/18% that is primarly white but tanned due to having a Middle Easterner/Armenian ancestry or being visibly mixed, usually having a big amount of amerindian ancestry (people like Maradona) or black in some cases.
And Spanish ancestry it's bigger than Italian one, but also tend to be more mixed.
And also there is a small minority (1%) of very mixed blacks, and an even smaller one that have primarly East Asian ancestry.

I know what you mean about the whole 9-5 for several decades. That's something that has just never appealed to me. I'm glad I didn't have kids right after high school or anything like that. I feel like a good amount of people who end up going the whole 9-5 route are sort of forced into doing because they have a family/kids to support. You can't leave as much room for uncertainty in your life when you have kids since they are basically depending on you for everything. Then there are people who do it because it's a bit easier (you're basically following down a path that's mostly been mapped out already since a lot of people have been going down it for a long time), you don't have to be too creative or think outside the box with it, all you have to do is be another cog in that machine the machine that is society. Thanks for sharing Tommy.
