Beginners image transfer using a gelli plate and laser photocopies

- In this tutorial I am experimenting with image transfer. I have printed out my own images using my HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw. Some of the prints were not so successful but I show these too!
Here is a list of paints that I tried. Best combo was Pebeo Studio Acrylics Paynes Grey and Amsterdam oxide black, next best was Amsterdam Prussian Blue. I have had some success with Daler Rowney graduate acrylic Black and Indigo.
The tissue paper is Carnival wet strength available on Amazon.
I really like that you leave your fails in as well. A lot of artists only show the great ones, it makes me feel like a failure when I can’t get it to work and they make it look so easy 😊

Yes I have found transfers very hard. Light touch for transfering image I think?

Thank you, I took pictures of trees myself then used the background remover tool on canva. Unsplash.com is a great resource for royalty free images though
Hey! I’m going to hypothesize the reason the pattern tissue isn’t working is how it’s made: one side of pattern tissue is almost glassine, the way it’s pressed and processed. It won’t have the grab that other tissues (or the book paper that grabs the paint so well) have. My guess is you’ll find those old book pages consistently pull all paint (no matter the brand) much better than the tissues - especially the pattern paper. :) Thanks for sharing your wins and losses here - I really enjoyed watching!

Thank you for the fabulous tutorial. Is it possible to use stamps on our gelli plates, and what is the best technique? Do you use a heat gun to set the inks and dry the prints?
Not a good idea to use heat on a gel plate, stamps work well though 😀

Thank you for showing us that not all of our attempts are going to work. I see lots of videos and everyone they try works perfectly. I was so excited to try my homemade Gelli plate for the first time and I never got a good image. I got so disappointed. I’m still going to try again and will try different paint and paper. I was doing magazine pages and none of them worked….

Why is your gelliplate not accepting the paint at the top? (When you use your brayer to put the paint on) I have never seen this before. Is something coated on the gelliplate you can’t get off?
Not sure what you mean? If there’s ever paint I can’t get off I use baby oil and that works 👍
This may be a silly question, but how did you isolate your photo to be just the tree on the page?
Not silly at all! I used the background remover on Canva 😀

I’ve seen other people just using black and white printers with success too.
So its just matt copy paper not shiny paper? I tried to transwer a bird image - quite high contrast, i thought but nothing came off 😮 I've also heard Amsterdam is the best for transfers.
Hi 👋 my paper is just regular copy paper. I’ve seen other artists ask for a high quality laser print satin finish and this gave good results. I like the Amsterdam paint for transfers, listed the ones I use in the description below. Jane Fasse and Drew Steinbrecher have good tips on image transfer 👍
Would the pebeo be good enough on its own or does it need to be mixed with a heavier paint ? Ive been trying with system 3 acrylic and not getting a transfer? Wondering if its not heavy enough Thanks
I don’t mix with heavier body, student grade works well for me 😀

I noticed how a lot of artists keep a journal of techniques they tried. Also thanks for recommending the brand of wet strength tissue paper. I ordered some. Have been trying this with magazines but it was a flop. Will try with laser prints.

I often found I quite liked the first pull - of the ink onto the image too.

you printed in color setting , BEST QUALITY? but you had b/w tones, or switched to b/w filter but still kept at rgb file?
Your getting a bit technical for me lol 😂 I printed a black and white image in colour settings, best quality. Hope that is what you were asking 😀
@@susanmccreevyartist thank you yes Susan, this makes a difference, because if someone was working from an original b/w image, they would need to make sure it was not grayscale, and still in RGB on computer, because it's not really a b/w image unless you throw away color info making it a grayscale image. Did you just put it through the printer one time? Some people put it through multiple passes to ink it up, which I think is a ridiculous waste of toner.
Hi Jaime, I did actually try putting through the printer twice but the image wasn’t exactly aligned and it ended up like double vision 🥴

Thank you Susan your technique looks doable, however for everyone out there who has never done this kind of technique, BE VERY MUCH AWARE!! this is not as easy as the videos make it look. I wasted a lot of money and time and was not successful. If anything almost traumatized me and made me feel so incompetent. I am renowned for not giving up and have done complicated art to a good standard. In any case all the best of luck.
