Thanks for sharing! As a Kid coming here from HK back 87 it's true that immigrant kids were easily drawn into the gang culture and I was one of those kids back then in NYC. I used to indulge that lifestyle as a young adult and go through that phase and end up paying a heavy price. I did time and came home became a much better version of myself and never look back. I am grateful that I got the message and reflected. I realized being incarcerated was the most valuable lesson in my life, with the support of my family I was able to turn my life around after coming home. Now I am 46 years old and have a professional career as an artist, something that I could only dream of as child. I totally agree about having a mentor in a young person's life, which most immigrant kids like us don't have that type of role model in their lives. Our parents work hard and strive to put food on the table and oftentimes they can't be there for us. But we're optimistic for a better future.
We were first generation Chinese cop in NYPD, we had so many great stories and experiences. Mike, you missed all these great guys (real Chinese gang cops), they were involved so many Chinese gang cases, helping investigation and making an arrest during these golden days, they have so many real cases and untold stories.
@@keithng274 Unfortunately those stories will remain untold unless they care to reach out to me and share those stories for our future generation. It’s a piece of Chinatown’s history.
Phil! Your parents are the best! I still see your mom from time to time. The circumstances surrounding us growing up in the 80’s made it part of the fabric of Chinatown. So glad to see you’re doing well in retirement! You should convince Eddie to get on this podcast. Haha.
Good interview, Mike. It is nice to interview different varieties of guests whether it be gangs, policemen or civilians. We outsiders from other countries are interested to know about NY’s Chinatown history 👍🏻
Phil - it's good to see you well in retirement. Growing up in the 80's and 90's during the gang days, this channel brought back a lot of memories. My friends and I still joke how we survived those days vs the bubble our kids grow up in now.
Big shouts to you Phil- Congrats on your retirement! It’s Conan lol- big baller. Definitely telling our stories about Chinatown survival and playing basketball saved us. Say hi to your sister, Linda for me! It’s been a long time and good to see and hear from you. It’s a small world you know Mike! Take care!
Great interview and story. I would love to hear his take as 5th Pct Executive Officer on his relationship with On Leong, Hip Sing, CCBA etc. His experience in resisting gang recruitment was ver common.
Tell some juicy stories. Make it up if you have to. Talk about the graft, corruption, payoffs, and free meals. Tell us about how you go to "inspect" an unlicensed massage parlor. Talk about all of the red envelopes. Detail how you work "off duty" at pool halls and karaoke bars.
Philip was some what involved with the gangs. No young kids in Chinatown back then would have a fight with the gangs let alone two! Philip, was a bad boy! Both of you are shady individuals.
@@zhikongli879 Apparently you don't understand the difficulties growing up and the fight for survival in NYC Chinatown. Both Phil and Mike chose the NYPD before they got caught up in the gang life. Much respect 🙌
Why dont you guys talk about the level of corruptions youve experience while on the force. Let's get some self accountabilities instead of pointing your fingers at the gangsters. Lets start with that if you want respect😂

I like to thank both of you for protecting and serving the Asian community ..... Enjoy your retirement & be safe.... ✌🏼

Captain seems like a great humble leader. Would be great to hear more stories about interesting cases and characters he worked on

Will cover that and more on future episodes
Hope he comes back on the show and interact with everybody.
Great interview man... I think Philip went to school with my brother.
I came to New York at 1996, at that time, Chinatown was much better, thank you

Please make a video reviewing the food at Potluck Club with Big Head and Kenny
Happy retirement Phil! Absolute gentleman
this is the basis of a movie..i am sure y'all seen infernal affairs..this is more unique because mike straddles both sides..
Anyone know what the song name is at the ending?
Chinese parents working hard to make a better life for the kidds. Lot of kids back then had little time or contact with thier parents
I went to Seward park high school
Have lots of memories

It's very interesting that Phillip was Mike's first boss in the gang of NYPD.
“Job is dead”. 5yr left🤞🙏

More than likely you dont have a job
@@pauls8620 the difference between me and you is that when your self employed I do what I want you do what you can 🤷🏻♂️
Were there any other Chinatown gangsters that talk and dress like China Mac?
Actually many that was the 90s hiphop culture. But if you’re talking about the present China Mac, probably alot.
Love it! Living the dream and living on hard worked pension. Respect 🫡
Mike did u ever go to prison before being a cop?
Sup Capt!
BIG HEAD PLZ!!
Chinese on chinese crimes was stupid. If think of whats happening now
What’s happening now?
They didn't really protect the community. They were just looking after themselves. Most of the time they tried to mug you if you were by yourself.
33 years served 33 minute video😂😂😂

Mike has already talked about that, that’s how I found this channel actually
