      I installed a 50W solar panel on the top of the vehicle, always make sure that the battery has more than 13.9V voltage😜

      Just use a coin open the battery terminal holes and fill it up to level with battery water. Do it every year. Mine did go up to 4 years. But I drive my d-max as an everyday vehicle to go to work.

    Hi Nick, Great work on the MUX scene. During the install @ 5:24 you had most of the earth connections wired in the body side of the vehicle earth shunt which allows the smart alternator to detect electrical loads. Then during the post install comments @ 5:33 you have all of the earth connections wired in the battery side of the vehicle earth shunt. This will appear to test OK for voltage on start up. However, when your DC2DC charger kicks in (Dual Battery System video) or any other added electrical loads (driving lights, etc.) the alternator may/will-not detect the additional load which can effectively be draining your start battery. If this is the case your current electrical setup could also be contributing to the shortened battery life you are experiencing. Please take this as a constructive observation.
    I,ve fitted a SuperCharge Gold power (36month warranty) about 2 years ago, MF80D26L. My original Isuzu battery died after about 3 years.

    Nick - doing a bit of research on how the 'smart' alternator on your MUX works might help you with your problem (I have a 2017 D-Max, with secondary battery in the tray and DC/DC charger - no battery problems). If you have a battery volt meter where you can see it from the driver's seat, you'll get an idea how it works. The ECU is doing a few things with the alternator's charging system. After starting the engine, the ECU will ensure the battery is quickly charged to replace the power lost from using the starter motor. After that, the ECU is trying to balance fuel economy with keeping the battery at a charged state to run the engine and accessories. Understanding the first Law of Thermodynamics helps to understand what it's trying to do (energy consumption isn't free...in this case it's coming from either the fuel tank or kinetic energy). So watching the voltage gauge, you'll see the alternator 'kick in' when you are breaking/decelerating, and disconnect when accelerating. If you have a scan gauge, you'll see these cut in/cut out points are directly related to 'engine load' points. You'll notice that driving after a while on the highway at a decent speed with about 60% engine load, the battery voltage will slowly drop down to around 12.6 volts, and only jump higher when you are going down a hill. If you turn your lights on at any time, the ECU knows this is a larger load on the electrical system, and the alternator will stay connected all the time and you'll see that your battery voltage will hang around 14.1 volts. I'm suspecting your short battery life problems might have something to do with your secondary battery DC/DC charger - maybe it's not turning off after you turn the engine off. Also, I agree with someone else's comment here - you should have your battery cable for your secondary battery connected to ground (so the ECU can 'see' the load)...not the negative terminal of the battery. Love your work! Ta Fless

    I had a similar issue with the same Century Battery, it spewed acid all over the battery tray, down the engine bay and on the garage floor. Pretty pissed, slow learner, so fitted another after supplier said "just bad luck! " I trickle charge if I haven't driven the car for 7 days. I used to get good life out of Century batteries years ago but things appear to have gone downhill.

    Mostly,Lead-acid battery onlly has up to about 500 times circle(fully charge and discharge),every time we start our engine only use about 20-25% percent capacity. so most lead-acid battery only has about 3 years lifetime (about according to the frequency you start up)

    3-5 years from a hyundai getz in Brisbane should be "normal"
    You can buy one, $199 and abuse it for a year, or spend $700+ on agm or lithium and worry about it all the time for 1-6 years.

    ….”just out of warranty”, and it starts to leak and swell? That just racks of the manufacturer building in a limited designed life. I’ve used Century ( or one if their branded clones) as a 2nd battery on the past and not had issues. Based on some other comments in this post, suggest Century’s quality appears to have gone downhill in recent times and performance is hit or miss. My crank battery (Prado) is nearly 4 years old so will be looking to update soon, guess I need to look for an alternative to a Century?

    Cheers Nick. I run Supercharge Allrounders in my Delica, generally they last 6 years. In my MUX, I'm still on the factory battery at 5 years old now. I do charge all my vehicles at least once every 60 days with a 5 stage charger, and think that's what makes the difference. When the MUX battery dies, will be going with the Supercharge Allrounder again.

    Hey Nick - we got 4 years I think out of factory, it failed hard when it went. I notice your century with secondary terminals were probably bypassing the smart alternator. I don't have a comparison, but monitoring charging voltage I consider the smart alternator control aggressive in the MU-X, enough to trigger dc-dc system to think the engine was off. So depending on what you had on secondary terminals you've been running off battery and not alternator.
    I assume you didn't get the dealer to turn off smart alternator, I asked it 'can't be done' but have seen posts that it can.
    In the end I usually end up driving with lights on which turns off smart management when we are on a trip.

    Hi Mick, Unfortunately The car manufactures Have changed a lot of the engineering on how a battery is charged. some alternators now only have a charge voltage of 12 v as before it was 13.8 volts so therefore a battery never can be fully charged as in the past. the main culprit that allows discharge is any accessory added to the vehicle such as cigar ret plug ins like Phone chargers, these power points remain active on most vehicles when ignition is turned off. Auto lights another always switch lights off. If your running fridge expect a constant drain more than usual a second battery is advised to be fitted just to run things like that. I've had a battery drain problem on the 22 M-ux it was a combination of the above and I remove the charger for my phone and turn off the auto light the computer in the vehicles of today also draw a constant current so there is going to be a constant drain on the battery that isn't there in the older vehicles .
    hope this makes some sense
    cheers from an old Gypsy

    I had the same problem as you with a century 4x4 battery. I replaced my factory battery with the century purely because it had the extra lugs for accessories. I kept it topped up to the correct level, however, I noticed if I’ve parked on a hill or gradient, fluid would leak out. I treated my under battery tray with Lanolin spray oil as a temporary measure. I tried a another supercheap auto brand battery however, not having the extra lugs was a pain, so I have gone back to century. If I get five years out of my new century battery I will settle for that.

    Bought a battery from my local isuzu dealer here in Philippines, has the isuzu logo on it, year old now and still OK.
    Got just over 4 years out of the original battery on my mux.
    When I lived in Perth used century dual batteries in my diesel landcruiser, 2 years was the average life span.
    I used to buy direct from century and found other suppliers had the same batteries at a cheaper price!
    Commented to salesman that I could buy them cheaper at other suppliers, he said well buy them there, never went back to century.

    I haven't had much luck with century batteries in both my 4x4 and boat. They were a bit of a let down. I use exide now only because the distributor is two sheds up from my work and I can get them cheaper than any other battery. The battery I had that lasted the longest was a Bosch maintenance free it lasted 4 years in North Australia where most batteries only last about 2.

    I put a Supercharge Allrounder as a second battery in my Patrol, wired in parallel with the OEM battery. Replaced both after 5 years with 2 more Allrounders which have lasted 6 years and still going. Judging by the distributor of Century batteries in Australia, and seeing they have many others made in China, I'm not convinced that the guts of the Century is made here. Maybe they add the acid here.......

    The greatest test on battery durability are heavy vehicle fleets.
    Century and Delkor Batteries used to be a fantastic product 12-14 years ago, but the companies were not making any money when their batteries lasted up to, and over 10 years in 4wds….. and 6 years in Trucks.
    They tinkered with the internals to shorten the lifespans.

    I can't remember what battery I have, I think it is an Exide (and the previous one which didn't last longer than about 3 years was I believe an Exide as well). I have a 2013 D-Max, so it doesn't have the smart alternator and I also have a battery in the tray. I used to charge the AGM just from the alternator. It worked okay, but found that my AGM was not lasting as long as I'd like (approx 3 years). I invested in a DC-DC charger. The AGM seems to be doing better (but I haven't travelled as much since COVID). But one thing I did learn though, because I was lazy with finishing the wiring, I had the AGM charging from the alternator for a while bypassing the DC-DC charger. I was finding that after a few runs, that the starter battery was losing oomf to start the car. I changed the AGM to charge from the DC-DC and after a long drive, the starter battery was back to its original cranking power. I've not let the AGM charge from the alternator since and have found that the starter battery is in a much better place. Nick, do you have a secondary battery? If so, how is it wired up?

      Hi Nick, Great work on the MUX scene. Must agree with Paul.

    I have had nothing but trouble with AU made batteries. 16 months ago, I replaced a 10 year old optima for one in my patrol, and it's stuffed now.
    I couldn't get an optima ATT because of covid issues... I will get another optima, because
    I have found them to be very forgiving, and ten years is not out of the question. I will never buy another AU battery again, sadly.
    Phill

    To many variables for saying how to prolong lead acid start battery..Under the hood temps, usage-dayly driving or just occasional fun..ratio bouncing around off road vs on road..so on..1-5years..I get 5 years out of Bosch 95Ah staring battery in my Dmax in Scandinavia..Temp outside less the 25C..usually..30 000 km per year since it also a work ute/truck/pick up...

    Hey Nick just replaced original battery in my 2019 dmax got 4 year's out of it, was done on recent service but dmax has just clocked 37000k so not sure if that's relevant to battery life span 👍

    Good 👍, Nick tell me one thing can I use damping sheet under the bonnet for reducing the engine noise

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  ปีที่แล้ว

      You should be able to put sound dampening under the bonnet.

    Isn't 14v a little low. Should be 14.4v for normal flooded battery and 14.6v for agm. I know new cars have smart alternators that drop voltage to reduce engine load... But could be more trouble.

    Hi Nick, a side issue, have you ever used rust prevention such as Lanoguard?

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't ever tried lano guard. I assume it would work pretty well being lanolin.

    What is the voltage, sounds like it had a shorted cell and the rest are gassing off due to over voltage

    Hey mate, did you had this kind of issue where filled up diesel but then the fuel gauge on the dash won't go full. It always left with one bar to full. Wondering if any idea? Thanks

    • @LowRangeNick
      @LowRangeNick  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I haven't ever experienced that. It could be a level sensor issue or that the tank isn't being filled completely. Would need to check the readout of the ecu with a scan tool and do some diagnosis.

    Was the battery swollen before you put the repco 2.5 amp charger on it? I've had the same charger swell and distroy 2 batteries.
