- G'day Guys and Gals!
In this video I show you just how easy it is to replace the factory fuel filter on your Isuzu Mu-X or D-Max.
Replacing the Fuel filter on your vehicle is a very important for keeping the fuel system in your vehicle in tip top condition. Using a high quality genuine fuel filter or high quality aftermarket fuel filter you will maintain the fuel system to its highest standard. Using some basic hand tools you can easily change the factory fuel filter in under 30 minutes.
I show you all the parts necessary to carry out the job and also the tools necessary.
It is a simple job that requires only a flat blade screw driver to carry out.
After I remove the filter I show you how to clean out the fuel filter bowl and replace the 'O' Ring seal.
After I complete the job I use some Lucas fuel injector cleaner and fuel conditioner to look after the Diesel in the tank and help lubricate the fuel system.
Thanks a lot for watching guys! If you enjoyed this video and would like to see more videos like this. Please like and Subscribe to my channel : )

These videos are invaluable for Isuzu owners. Great relevant content, no fluff, just facts and to the point. Great job Nick 👌🏽
Great video mate, my 2018 Dmax is out of warranty now and my dealer wanted $662 to do a basic oil and filter change! I bought all the gear including oil, air and fuel filters with 20 litres of oil for $190. Was great to get my hands dirty after 30 years of being a lazy prick with some reassurance from your videos!
@beanster3748 nice work! Great to hear 😀👍
Just wanted to say a massive thanks, Nick. I recently inherited a 2018 MUX that hadn’t been driven in about 3 years.
Mechanics wanted stupid money for basic things I knew I’d be able to do myself with a bit of help, considering I’ve never done anything on a car before.
With your videos I’ve been able to change the cabin filter, air filter, fuel filter and change the oil + oil filter myself with minimal trouble, time and saved a shitload of money in the process.
Cheers a million!
Awesome work! Thanks a lot for watching ☺️
Im trying to look after my late dad’s mux. Your videos are a godsend since theres not alot of how tos especially for the mux. Thanks a lot mate 🙏
Thanks mate. Helped me heaps. I got it done in 40 minutes watching your vid 😁
That's awesome! Thanks a lot 👍
HOT TIP: Make sure you lubricate (spit) the o-ring really well before trying to reassemble the housing otherwise its very difficult to screw it back together. I learnt this the hard way haha. Thanks so much for the video. Just did it for the first time!
Good one
Thanks for the simple and informative video! Just got us back on the road quickly and saved another holiday breakdown nightmare..!
Don't stop making videos mate. Glad I'm learning more through you!
Thanks Jake! 😊
Just used this vid to do a fuel filter change on my 2013 dmax. Can confirm, car still works 👍
Cheers.
Apart from my cabin air filter, everything is now up to date.
I was unsure until I watched your Vid. Well done n Thank you. I will change mine tomorrow morning 👍
Thanks Nick, you make it look simple. I have changed the fuel filter many times on my old BT50. Now I have a new 2021 DMax, your video will help a lot.
Realy well explained cheers mate I'll follow
Thanks Nick, I not only know where my filter is I can now change the filter myself in my MUX
Thanks Wayne 👌
Thanks Nick, a little easier than what I've been doing!
Superb as always , very helpful.
Change my filter on the Dmax. Thanks for the help. It all went well. Great clear video and great explanation. The filter was black
Nice! Good time to change it by the sounds!
My fuel filter light has come on and isuzu reckon they changed filter, dont think they did so ill be following you on how to do all the basic servicing. Also have to watch how to fit a snorkel. Thumbs up mate.
FuelDoctors for the win.
Thanks Nick, well presented
Excellent video
Great help👍very good description.
Thank's for the video, save me a bit of money. excellent info, very well explain.
Very good tips thanks for the vid, it made my fuel filter change much easier and quicker
Did this today after the fuel filter light had been coming on under load... fixed it. Filter was pretty dirty and a fair bit of algae in there as well. Isuzu is pretty slack with the fuel filter changing intervals. Cheers
Great and clear explanation.
Getting a new filter today. Thanks.
Thank you for that clear and concise video.
great vid again from you Nick. Thanks again.
Good work, good presentation, thank you.
Thanks a lot for the vid, that was easy to follow and was very clear and informative. I knew it wasn't going to be too difficult once I saw it's location, but I appreciated seeing exactly how the clips came undone and how to lift it off its bracket, that saved me a bit of stuffing around.
Thanks alot for the feedback! 😊
@@LowRangeNick Not a problem mate, I don't post often, but if someone makes a video that I find helpful I will always give thanks, even more so when it is a fellow Aussie :-)
Good job, the service shop could charge you dearly for that maintenance task.Ill inspect mine for for those FOD soon..Nice Vid!
Cheers for the big help Nick!!🙏🙏🙏
Great Videos Nick. Very simple to follow steps. 👍👍👍
Nice tutorial mate. Cheers for posting.
Thanks Phil!
Cheers mate I've got a 2015 dmax @100,000km . It helps heaps to double check I'm doing my services right. 👍
Great video Nick, as always. A question though: my old Rodeo 4x4 has a second filter under the driver's door. Is this a fuel or water filter and what am I supposed to do with it?
Excellent how-to video. Thank you LowRangeNick!
Thanks Nick - great video!! The fuel filter light has come on on my MUX mainly when going up a hill or accelerating. I will replace the fuel filter and think I could do this myself after watching your vid. Top notch.
Nice one! Cheers
Nick,
I came across an Australian made diesel additive from Responsive Engineering in NSW.
Thanks your very good help all the people and me know
Hey Nick very informative thanks . question what's the best way to lubricate fuel filter o ring
Thanks Sean, either Vaseline or silicone spray.
@LowRangeNick Thanks, keep up the good work
Thanks for the video, going good now, you're a champion
Thanks Nick, worked a treat
Great to hear !
Great vid, clear and precise...thank you. WA
Very helpful and clear. Thanks
thanks Nick, the hardest part was getting the filter off the bracket. Nick have you thought about doing a video on how to replace brake pads & rotors?
Nick,
Thanks for the great video.
I can across a diesel additive from an Australian company called Responsive Engineering. Have you used this product and any comments
I haven't used that brand before. They all do a very similar job so if It looks good then I'm sure it will help.
Awesome mate cheers 👍
Legend! Thanks heaps bro!
Thanks mate made it easy
Great video mate
Hi mate, thank you for the video. I am struggling to screw the top back on to seal. I’m about 1 rotation short I believe. Any tips on what I could be doing wrong? Thank you
Hey Tee Jay, sometimes the seal can make it difficult to screw down completely. If you try lubricating all of the seals with silicone or rubber grease and then push the lid down as you screw the threaded ring on it should help seat it over the seals correctly.
@@LowRangeNick I did try that mate with no luck. I haven’t serviced a car since a commodore about 8 years ago lol. When I position the fuel filter in the container does it need to face a certain direction? Thank you for the reply. Extremely handy page
@@teejay607 It doesn't need to face any particular way. Maybe try using the old 0 rings on the new filter sometimes the ones supplied with aftermarket filters are too big.
I was having same issue. Not sure why. Eventually got it but took ages. Last time I did this job it was much easier 🤷♂️
Awesome mate love your work much appreciated
Thanks Brendan!
Great vid mate
Been waiting for this one! Thanks mate
Thanks Nick
hey i just had my mechanic pit in diff breathers, i noticed i have two breathers where as you have four. have i been ripped off?
Great video Nick, just what I was after. I'll be subscribing to get some helpful info.
Thanks alot Shane!
Great video, very helpful, good job
Another very educational video Nick. You turn a daunting task into a step by step process. Well done! (Is there a ‘pre-fuel’ filter cleaning video?)
Thanks a lot Christian, no video of the pre filter as I haven't got one fitted yet haha
Great video Nick thanks for posting it rgds Peter
Thanks mate great video
Thanks really good vid, keep up the good work
Hi Nick, Have done the filter change as per your video. All good until I try to connect the housing back together can not get it to seal it appears right until you prime the system & it leaks. Is there a trick to the retaining ring?
The after market o rings can be really tight. Try some vaso or lubricant on the o rings and thread. You can also apply some pressure down ward on the lid whilst turning the locking ring.
Did you use a Lucas diesel fuel treatment in this Vid ? I have heard that excess injector cleaner can damage injector washers with excess temperature created at that point. I realise fuel and injector treatments are different. Thanks.
Good job, nick
Thanks Nick can you show how you change the fuel filter under the chasis
Thanks Nick. As a total novice I was able to follow your instructions pretty well. However, I would welcome your replies to my comments below:
1. What is the purpose of the bottom section of the Ryco filter assembly? It seems to have different fitting to the factory installed version which has slots cut into its base.
2. After 8:33 into the video you mention "tabs" - could explain what tabs you mean please?
3. I found too that too much diesel leakage/spill causes the white dots to disappear, just as I was trying to screw the top on. This was the hardest step for me, because even after lubricating the new O-ring, I had many attempts to tighten the circular locking ring before I succeeded - with no white dots to guide me!
I've run the motor for 15 minutes and can't detect any fuel leaks so far - so many thanks again!
Hi, the tabs are the tabs on the lid that line up with the flat spots on the base. I think section on the bottom is just a little filter. It can be difficult to get the lid on with aftermarket filters and o rings. Best to apply lubricant and push firmly down on the lid while tightening the locking ring.
Thank you very much
Hi Nick, do you have a vidoe tutorial for brake fluid replacement? TIA
Not yet sorry
Awesome!
Thanks for the video. I love all of your video probably because I drive the same family of vehicle..an isuzu dmax 2019 4jj1. But I heard there are 2 fuel filters..one is underneath. Did you make a video of that too?
There are 2 filters on the 2.5l I believe. On the 3.0l there is one in the engine bay. I have made a video on changing the fuel filter.
Sweet as mate
Perfect 👌
Hi Nick , what's the brass breather looking things on your firewall with hoses leading up to them?
Hi Tony, they are diff breathers.
Good video Nick, nice n clear Mate 👌, do you know of any spin on fuel filter conversion? I hate stuffing around with the paper element filters 🦧, I have a 2015 dmax 4x4 mux, Love it...travel safe Mate...🇦🇺🔧🦉
Hi mate another great video, can you do a video on the spotlight install
Thanks alot 😊 i have a few videos to finish off and then I will put together a video of the spotlights, stay tuned 😊
Hi mate tried looking for one of your videos about replacing cv’s have you got any, cheers
The Ryco filter appears to have additional pre filter?
All good just read old post.
Hey nick what about the fuel filter that's underneath the truck .. is it basically the same process?
Tighten whole filter assembly outside of vehicle id say
Thank you so much for putting this video. Aussie diesel fuel doesn't look that bad at all, still as clear as water. So is the same theory if you run out of diesel fuel by pumping it on the top of fuel filter? Thxs once again.
Cheers Simon 😊 Yep your spot on. If you run out of fuel you can top up the tank and then use the filter primer to bring the fuel right to the filter and make it start alot easier.
I did a service on my 2017 MUX today, just doing the air, oil, fuel and cabin filters, as well as oil obviously. I replaced the washer for the sump plug, got it from my local isuzu dealer. Anyway, i am getting a small leak from the sump plug. I didnt over tighten it, and its certainly not loose. The plug itself was in good condition. Hope it recitifies itself, but probably not. Any ideas?
thanks for the share bro。
Thanks for the video, the light for the filter is coming on under acceleration, the car has done 95k and it's never been changed so I guess it's time, the old guy I bought it off serviced it from new ( changed the oil) LOL, also do you know if there is any difference between a 2014 dmax and 2014 mux as far as fitting a bullbar, I picked up a 2nd hand ECB bar for my dmax but when I called ECB they said the part number on it was for an mux though the wrecker I bought it off swore it was off a dmax???? Thanks
It does sound like its time to replace the fuel filter. It must be pretty blocked up. As far as I am aware the dmax and mux bull bars are different.
@@LowRangeNick Thanks, yeah changed the filter and problem gone.
Awesome car 😁
i followed your instructions and had fuel pouring down the sides when priming. i took it apart several times but could not get the collar to thread up far enough to make the seal . you mentioned aligning the tabs as you were putting the two sections together. what tabs are these.
There are 2 tabs on the lid that align with flat spots on the base. You will require some lubricant on the seals and thread. Vaseline is the best to use. Then push down on the lid whilst tightening.
thanks mate.
Excellent demo Nik. Will you be considering putting in a second fuel filter?
I will eventually put in a secondary fuel filter, it's not on the immediate to do list though 😊
@@LowRangeNick Maybe share your thoughts on the secondary fuel filter? I can't see the advantage of a second fuel filter that does the same job as the factory unit. Instead, I would do what you are planning to do - replace the filter element more often. So called "bad fuel" maybe a reason if you can get a "bad fuel" filter, but I know very little about what constitutes "bad fuel".
@@MiniLuv-1984 Secondary fuel filters generally go before the factory filter and have a finer micron filter installed which is extremely effective at removing water and fine particles. Then the factory filter is there as a second filter to ensure your fuel system is getting very very clean fuel.
@@LowRangeNick Thanks LowRangeNick. When will your brother LongRangeNick make a show? Ofcourse I'm talking about long range fuel tanks...I'm just about to buy a off-road touring tug and, i guess like others am grappling with what to do to it to make it suit our needs. At the moment, i have 80L of gerry cans....but what a pain - and so damn messy. Anyway, that is why I follow your channel so closely...you are like a pioneer for me!
@@MiniLuv-1984 Thanks alot Benny! Haha I have also been looking at long range tanks. I think I am going to go with the ARB Frontier tank as it is a plastic tank so nice and light and it replaces the factory tank but uses the space around it alot better. They are 119l tanks.
Should the primer plunger stay hard or does it go soft after a few minutes?
it will go soft after a few minutes or if you start the engine.
Hi Nick another great video. Did you ever feel that you needed to add a secondary fuel filter on like I see people do on other 4x4s
Hi Bill, I don't really see a need for it unless you are doing a lot of remote touring and filling up your fuel at remote stations where there is more of a chance of contaminated fuel. I usually change my factory filter every service so its always in good condition.
Hi Nick, what is the recommended replacement of fuel filter? TIA
There isn't a schedule for Isuzu. They recommend when the fuel filter light comes on it should be changed.
@@LowRangeNick I see, in your experience when do you normally change it?
@@johnphilipocampo951 I personally do mine every service every 10k. Under normal driving conditions every 20-30k is a reasonable service interval.
@@LowRangeNick thank you so much Nick.
Hi Nick, I just wondering what is the diesel fuel cetane rating in Australia? Thank you.
Minimum index of 46 which equates to a cetane number of 51
Good day, mate! I have the same model of your Isuzu Mux, does it have a secondary fuel filter?
Great vid nick! I wasn't able to align the two dots but managed to tighten it. Is that ok? No leaks too.
It should lock in and the dots should align if fitted correctly.
Thanks for the videos, just wondering your opinion on secondry fuel filtration?
A good idea! Can prevent costly repairs.
what are your thoughts pre-fuel filter.
Cheers for that. Do you know if some D-Max's have their fuel filters underneath??
Current model dmax should be in the same spot.
Hey mate, hope you can help. I can't get the screw cap to the top over the O ring
Try lubricating the o ring with some rubber grease or silicone spray and lubricate the thread with silicone as well. Make sure the locating tabs are aligned and fit the lid first to the bowl and then screw the thread on. If this doesn't work try fitting the old o ring and giving that a go.
@@LowRangeNick Thanks man, i ended up putting the old o ring on and that worked. Almost got the new one on but it was too tough!
Hi nick.
Does that injector cleaner. Have any negative affect on the dpf ?
No negative effects. It will just treat the fuel and clean the fuel system.
