Thanks for joining me for my first video! Let me know what else you'd like to see! Also I will definitely work on improving the audio quality for the next one 💛
I feel like it may be better to have more smooth transitions if possible and less sudden zooms to create a more peaceful and expressive feeling. Thanks for reading and best wishes from a Dutch cellist!
You can hear a lot of influence from Elfman's Batman score too. As for people not knowing your instrument.... you tell people you play the cello, they know what you're talking about. After I say "timpani" it's usually followed with " kettle drums" after I see their dull uncomprehending eyes.
I'm not sure if you've heard of a cellist named Kevin Olusola. He has been playing since he was a child and won some competitions as a student. When he was in college he developed a technique of beatboxing while playing cello (celloboxing). That led to him being recruited to provide vocal percussion for an a capella group called "Pentatonix". He has been with Pentatonix for over 10 years now, mostly beatboxing and singing, but he plays cello on some of their songs. He has his own TH-cam channel (KO - Kevin Olusola) where he posts arrangements of classical and pop music, solo and with other musicians. Here is his version of Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" where he is looping his cello and singing and playing with the looped recordings. th-cam.com/video/nyYG70aM9Fw/w-d-xo.html
About audio quality: Acoustic panels, even removable, on at least 2 perpendicular sides of the room and possibly on the floor if there is no carpet, can greatly reduce reverberation. It's better for the spoken voice, but obviously for the music it's an artistic choice so at the player's discretion!
Imagine all the future cellists who never would have given the instrument a second thought who will be getting into this instrument now that this show has made it popular.
I’ve thought just the same and am delighted (and slightly afraid) that my daughter has decided to make Wednesday Addams her new role model. I am hoping the cello enthusiasm might follow …
It is just so refreshing to see an actor actually learn the instrument enough to make it look believable instead of all the cringy scenes from films where the movement, tempo, body position, bowing and fingering doesn't match up at all to the soundtrack. I hope Jenna is enjoying learning and keeps it up!
@@JL_Pope totally...but that's not her playing the actual music.... it takes years to get that good. But she could definately learn enough to sync enough with the music to make it look good!
i think they chose the cello for Wednesday to play because it at least in my opinion has a darker more melancholic timbre to its sound so in that sense i think it is very fitting for her character
At 15:58 are they really Jenna Ortega's hands compared to the shot where you see her face in the same shot I am wondering if she had a cello double.. for them double stops
@@NotesWithNicholas there are a few shots where you can't see her face... and they are always 'complex' finger movement shots I just wish my fingers moved that well 😎
Yeah that makes a lot of sense! If it’s a quick shot then it’s probably possible to get a good take after a few tries, but definitely safer to use a double if you can 🙏
I love how positive this commentary is. Also, I'm happy Jenna got a thumb up from a professional cello player. To me as a viewer, it just looks nice and sounds nice and fits amazingly the story.
I actually really like how in the show it's played "less lively and more perfect" because that sounds very much in tune with Wednesday's personality. Let's not forget there are hands running around, magicians, monsters... so it's not too long stretch to believe Wednesday playing in an impossible way.
"Less lively & more perfect is perfect ! She understates everything (expressions, colors, emotions, dress) but demands perfection of herself and without any fanfare.
I didn't actually expect to watch this whole detailed commentary on cello. And then realized i had made it to the end and was pleasantly surprised. It gave understanding to the depth of the sound and feel in the series, that on initial watching was taken for granted. Thank you Nicholas.
I think when she says ‘now I don’t really feel better’ it’s the same thing as when Mortician cuts the blooming rose 🌹 petals and leaves the stems with their thorns for her arrangement. The goal is to get back into an emotional place devoid of good feelings, it’s keeping theme with the original series intent. Great vid, thank you
Being a Finn, Apocalyptica has always been a part of the "normal" music, but they still blow me away with their live shows. They are just that skilled with their instruments. They somehow manage to isolate the sounds so well as well as match each others' pace, that you actually hear every single note crisply while it still maintains the overall melody. Absolutely recommend their gigs!
I love the cello-playing scenes in Wednesday, since I didn't watch any of the promotional content of the show I was caught off guard(in a pleasant way)by the cello scenes. I was completely entranced by the playing and music so much so that I'm trying to convince my mom to get me started on cello lessons. Cello is such a beautiful instrument in so many ways, I hope I can start learning it even though i have a rather late start by me being in my teen years and all. This video was so interesting, it was nice to see someone take a more positive and pleasant attitude toward the cello playing even though its not 100% perfect.
Thanks for watching, I love that the show has gotten more people interested in playing cello! Definitely don't be discouraged by thinking that you're getting a late start, especially if you're still in your teen years. There's always going to be time to learn and enjoy 😊
Jenna is 20 years old, and she's done two months of Cello playing, and seeing how well she is doing gives me confidence that anyone can start learning the cello, no matter the age! You should try it!
I started learning the cello at 16 and I’m 19 now. I love learning the cello and even though I got a “late start”, I definitely don’t regret it. If you have the passion and determination for it, I say go for it!
Love the video Nicholas! I'm a guitarist myself but I've always loved the deep luscious sound of the cello. Hopefully Wednesday gets more kids off TikTok and onto an instrument!
Hello from Hershey PA 😊 I watched your cover of “Paint it Black”… I thoroughly enjoyed it and will watch it again and again! Keep putting videos out there featuring cello virtuosos, with your interpretation of them. I have become a huge fan of the cello, mostly because of this show! The sound you get from the cello is so magical to my ears. If I were back in grade school, I would want to learn to play… Wednesday is my favorite show on Netflix… I binge watch it all the time! Thanks for your video, can’t wait to view more!
As another fellow cellist and fan of Wednesday, I found this video very interesting and I'm glad that the cello was incorporated in this show. My friends now think that the cello is cool! Nice video, and subscribed.
The cello has always been may favorite orchestral instrument. That deep, resonate base is just so addictive and I guess it makes the best instrument to represent darkness/moodiness that we'd associate with the Adams Family.
I just discovered your two YT channels thanks to this video. This was so interesting and so nice to watch! I appreciate the way you comment and analyse with so much respect. In the end it really creates a passionate and a kind atmosphere. Definitely waiting for your next video ! Thank you !!
I found your review of Wednesday by accident and so glad I did - First off let me say I am not a musician of any kind but I really, really enjoyed your review and thoughts of the cello pieces in particular and the music in general. You absolutely enhanced and changed the way I think about the show and am going back to re-watch it specifically so I can watch with your comments in mind. Your commentary was excellent and I especially liked the setting of your video - simple interior and lighting, etc.. I also thought the way that you shot the video - from the side - was spot on. I think more videos like this help the non-musician peel back another layer of fantastic shows like this. You picked up a new subscriber and I'll also look for your other channel as well.
Late reply but I really appreciate this comment! I was definitely hoping it would resonate with someone who watched the show but wasn’t coming from a musician’s perspective 🙏
I was nodding along enthusiastically when you talked about how great it was to hear the cello being given that room to breathe and show off how many sounds can be made! Whenever I hear a piece really showcase the cello, I'm always amazed at how one cello can sound like a handful of different instruments. The range of sounds is can make is really incredible, even as a non-cellist who is only listening and appreciating someone else's playing, so it's really cool to hear all those different playing methods broken down by someone who is an actual cellist and is really familiar with the instrument. I'm looking forward to more content here, and hoping for the cello to grow more and more popular!
I was unsure about this show at first because I didn't want them to butcher my favorite franchise, but watching the cello scenes made me start to love this representation of Wednesday. Cello is such a beautiful instrument with such a beautiful richness to it's sound. It's one of my favorites of the string instruments. It definitely deserves to be in the spotlight.
growing up playing the violin, i swear that every violinist secretly wished they played the cello. i think theres something about the full body physicality of it thats just as impressive as the fast & technical work on violin. its such a passionate and moving instrument
I was never a professional (not even close to good) violin player, but I did play it for about 15 years or so. But then, right before the pandemic at the ripe old age of 22, I started getting cello lessons, fulfilling this dream i had for quite some time at that point and while I'm not even decent at the Cello, I just love that I took the opportunity to do so! And it was far easier to learn than if I had never played violin before :)
@@juliecolemannelson6849 Why not? It's always worth a try, and if the only thing you get out of it is a new found appreciation for what cellists actually do when you hear them play, that's great on itself. But I think that you're definitely gonna get past that stage pretty fast :)
The 'colegno' bit that Wednesday plays could be a nod to Wednesday's fascination with the dark and sadistic, its followed by a book being ripped too. Two 'damaging' themed tones layered over the visual murder themes.
This was well done. The presenter Nicholas, has a personality of the right blend of subdued repressed emotion and excitement, knowledge of the subject matter. And the right bit of whimsy at the end when he mentioned the painter got the fingering wrong.
saludos Nicholas!! I am a violinist but I really enjoyed this video you made about the cello playing of Wednesday!! Your channel is so refreshing and insightful!! Thank you for this contribution!!!
@@Itza-Me That's true, I definitely don't think she got THAT much training. But she still certainly received professional help, so her being good shouldn't come off as a shock
During my teen years I would practice cello for 5-6 hours per day, but never going through 4 hour lessons. Hard to imagine she could have lessons that long. She’d have to have natural talent no matter what. I also used to love when movies or shows featured cellist characters. The 80s featured a number of movies and shows such as Ghostbusters, Electric Dreams, Micki and Maude (sp?), Fame (of course with Lori Singer) and Witches of Eastwick name a few. I had gone to an arts HS as a teen and recall doing fundraising to go on the music exchange trip. The violinists copped out, so I went with the band but didn’t bring my cello…. I was the “cello mascot” and only got to watch the band perform. Kudos to Jenna Ortega for her bow hold and her brief attempts at vibrato.
Didn’t even see the show and I have no idea about how to play the cello but I LOVE your breakdown! I’ve been listening to you for years! Keep sharing what you love!!!
The most beautiful and soulful intsrument in the world. The Cello concert No 1 by Bach is my all time favorite piece of music, I never tire of hearing it.
I want to thank you for everything you've done on your channel. You are one of the reasons I play cello and stuck with it as long as I have. Great review! keep on being amazing!
This channel is such a great addition to your usual content! It's great to hear you talking for the whole video. Looking forward to more future analysis from you. Subscribed!
I first watched this series on Netflix from a nostalgia of watching the original Addams Family shows as a kid. My expectation bar was set pretty low based on other Netflix shows I have seen but was then blown away. The trio of Wednesday, Enid and Thing was a revelation of cheesy themes with great acting. Loved it.
Thanks for the video, not only did I enjoy your comments but appreciated the music even more. Your modesty was very refreshing. Sadly I will not be learning the Cello but I will be watching the show. Keep up the great work and I look forward to your future videos. I am an electrician, machinist and a mechanic and my friend is a Violin maker/repairer ... ..... We both know our place in this world ... Thanks again .. Really enjoyed it
Metallica worked with the San Francisco orchestra when they made the S & M album. The conductor along with Metallica wrote arrangements for the orchestra rather than just having them play along with Metallica. One of their best live albums if you ask me.
You seemed like a really nice and genuine person right from the start of the video I didn’t even finished before I subbed. I hope you get wayy more subs in the future you deserve it. :)
I've always been a fan of cello. I really enjoyed the inclusion of this instrument in the story of Wednesday. Finally getting the spotlight it so richly deserves.
I've loved Apocalyptica for a very long time, so it was fun hearing how much you enjoyed them too. Great video, Nicholas! Looking forward to more in the future!
Not a Cellist here, but my favourite Apocalyptica song is "Hope Vol 2", I just love how the vocals mix with the Cello, how you could imagine the vocals kind of BEING a cello, with the long notes that he would sing, and then the parts where there were vocal Harmonies, and you could imagine the bow of a cello going along 2 strings to create that vocal line....Just my own interperetation of tha piece XD I still get chills listening to it =3
Listening to it now! I love the sound of the acoustic cello on top of the electric cello rhythm. They always do such a great job of incorporating vocals in their music while still spotlighting the cello too 👌
This is so good!!! Thank you. It reminds me of when I had to take a Music Appreciation class in college. I just took it because it met a requirement but it wound up being one of my favorite classes. We were required to attend 6 live performances and I saw so many great things. We had to write about it so you really had to listen. I still think about that class more than 30 years later and it had nothing to do with my major. Great job, subscribed.
Great, great video. I am a cellist myself, and I'm a metalhead, and I suspect I'm at a similar age. I grew up watching Tim Burton films and I've got that experience that you mention of my teen years straining my relationship with my instrument... And then getting this great shock and possibilities widened upon discovering Apocalyptica. There was a life and things to do outside of classical playing?! It was a big renewal. Basically your video says exactly all of the thoughts I've had on the series relating to the cello but much better worded, how proud and excited I've been, impressed with the actress, and their really seamless matching of the soundtrack to what's happening. And the use of so much cello. I didn't expect much from the series and it's really the cello representation I've always dreamt of. Now thanks to you I can share this with my friends and hopefully give them some insight! Thanks again. And I'll definitely pay attention to your channel. Kudos to you ✨
Aw thanks so much for sharing, I'm really glad this resonated with you! It's definitely a reflection of how meaningfully the cello is integrated into the show 🙏
I Just want to say, I absolutely loved ❤ your video!! I stumbled upon it while just listening to TH-camrs play the cello, because I absolutely love the sound of the cello, but I know nothing about the technicalities or what would be considered a good or a bad cello player, 😅 so I was delighted to find your video and feel like I was able to get to know the cello a little more by understanding the way, cello artist, like yourself, view the instrument, and how the artist who is playing the cello, feels about the instrument itself. I know that in this video, you are just enjoying and explaining the movie and all that stuff, but I hope you know that the why you talk about the instrument, and the fact that other people are now able to see the cello on a broader spectrum and by that I mean millions considering the movie has been seen a shit ton of times 😂 but your face lights up like no other. 🤩 as a first time viewer to your channel. I feel that You can see the joy ,love and the respect that you have for what you do and the instrument you play.☺️ but at this point, I’m just rambling but I gotta say I think that’s what really drew me in and kept me watching your whole video. So I 💯% agree with everyone your channel has immense potential keep it up I’ve already subscribed so from this point on I’ll be another fan of yours waiting for your next post 😁😄😁
I love this video. Thank you for your expertise. I am a keyboardist who uses cello and other string samples for composition, and it is so great hearing what is real and possible, and your insight, and some of those amazing other players showing off their dexterity of what is "really possible" amazing. Thank you for putting your thoughts, and the talents of others out there. I also watched Ms. Law's commentary, and playing. Amazing!
Thank you so much for creating this video! It feels very nice listening to you talking so passionately about this masterpiece. A little tip on the side, put your camera a bit closer to the computer, you won't have to look to the camera more, but it'll still create the feeling that you are talking more to the viewers! Love your playing btw., you're such an inspiration. :) Have a nice day
A comedy series “the IT crowd” (it’s on Netflix) has an episode prominently displayed cello playing. The episode is called “Moss and the German”. The cellist even played the theme song of “IT crowd” at the end
As an Orc Dork myself, I’m always happy to see any orchestral string instrument represented. In my high school, the band got all the glory and first pick of music, and we got the leftovers of music and budget.
The cello was always the instrument I wanted to play when I was growing up, but due to the cost and lack of teachers in our tiny northern Ontario town I ended up with a tiny quarter violin at 5 years old. It’s still my goal to one day set the time aside and learn the cello. The amount of emotion that can be conveyed through it is intoxicating and it is by far my favourite instrument. I thoroughly enjoyed Wednesday’s portrayal of playing it, and appreciate this video talking about it. Subbed. 😊
It may have been played on carbon fibre cello to reach this cleanness of the sound in the arpeggios. They are known to sound cleaner when playing double stops and play more effortless. The Lewis & Clark 5 string might do very well for these type of passages.
So glad I found your video. I loved the Wednesday series and am looking forward to a 2nd season. Your commentary on the cello playing was interesting and adds to why the quality of this show is so good.
I loved all the songs she played in the show while watching it, and I loved this video as well. This channel has started out strong, keep it up! Edit: Winter hits HARD
I had been putting off watching the show but your video made me want to watch the show before watching your video, I was so curious about your analysis but didn't want to spoil the show 🤭
Cellos' feature effect is sustain. That and vibrato make it shake a soul just right. My cellist quit my band to go to music conservatory after high school he plans to compose. Meanwhile I replaced him with a synthesizer and now I suck even worse.
hey man - just found you randomly scrolling through youtube but the way you made this video is great. I always had the feeling in school that without proper training it s super hard to understand stuff about music but you actually make me feel like i understand some parts. Really great video and i ll binge whatever you post mate =)
Ive been following you and your music for a few years now! Great to see your channel show up on my feed - had no idea you were on youtube. Just subscribed !
I learned wayyy back when that the cello can be played as a solo instrument when watching the TV show Air Wolf and the main character played some Russian anthem and it was so heartfelt and beautiful! Hopefully solo cello music will become more popular and more classical songs will be arranged for just that. It is time for the cello to come to the front of the stage!
11:20 i kinda thought it was an early depiction of how Wednesday really seriously do not give an eff to what other people think of her, she's just gonna play her own music and she's not gonna hide it
Thanks very much for being honest about not enjoying practice in your teen years. I started pretty young, stopped taking lessons in 8th grade or so because I wasn't taking it seriously enough and just felt like it was expected of me, my mom was tired of and incapable of shepherding me anymore, I didn't want to be so special, I guess now that I look at it 30 years later? Thankfully my HS Orchestra teacher reached out to the 'cello professor at my university and told him that her former principal 'cellist was at his school, but not playing. He invited me to Symphony. We played the real Star Wars score. I eventually found my way into Music Ed. So I made it through, Nicholas made it through, just don't quit entirely when it feels like you're not into it anymore. It will happen. Probably multiple times in one's life. Complicated, but a reality that we as music educators usually just try and gloss over or are afraid to mention, but confront ALL THE TIME with students in Middle School. "I just don't feel like it anymore." "It's not as fun as it used to be, or not as fun as I thought it would be." "I'm not as talented as _________" "I don't have time to practice." "I am not passionate enough about it." ... My current response to these opportunities when they arise now are hopefully a little more informed than standard advice and the more intense pipeline to professional world that is pretty prevalent (in what is usually considered a world of "high art" and "destiny" and "prodigies" and "talent" (hate that word. It's skill, not talent. Everyone can play at a much higher level than they realize, talent is not God-given, talent is developed. Suzuki said it, I've seen it, a hundred times over....)) Anyway, usually respond something along the lines of: Those feelings are normal. Scale back goals/repertoire, pacing, expectations, don't quit entirely, stay in school orchestra, take a summer off, dive into other genres, play a different instrument in school orchestra, switch to band for a while if you must, you'll be invigorated, just don't stop entirely. In time, it will feel different. Of course, some students and teachers and parents really might benefit from a harder approach and just pushing through, but that has its risks too. Just glad you said it out loud and with no judgement. "I didn't really like practicing very much." "Sometimes 'cellos don't get the most interesting parts in Orchestra." Thank you, thank you, thank you. You've helped normalize those feelings, so many students feel and think, "I must not be cut out for this." or "I'm not dedicated enough." or "This isn't fun anymore." etc... Now if we can just get Two Set to address their two or three terribly damaging and uninformed "Tone Deaf" videos, we'd be making even more progress. Check those out, they're really hard to watch, especially from two champions of music love and music education advocacy, really inaccurate and painful for me to watch. I've shared my thoughts in the comment section a couple times and started a good flame war down there. Great idea for a react video for you! Their friend is clearly not tone deaf (That's not even really a thing, for goodness sake!) and even though they're friends and are teasing nicely, they're waaaaay off in terms of how they describe his abilities (and thereby the overall abilities and societal attitudes towards music skill - especially the really intangible and difficult skills of ear training and singing!) and have added another brick in the wall in their huge and impressionable audience's minds and hearts between them and a lifetime of music skill development. Great video, thank you for your time and balanced perspective. Not really a big fan of the whole Wedensday/everything sucks/everyone else sucks so I'm angry and unappreciative about everything vibe, but I understand why it resonates and had similar feelings when I was younger, but acknowledged that there are some things to be positive about in my life. And at least they're representing 'cellos well! (I mean, being ok with your servant arranging an explosion at a school function? Uh... Sure, it's fantasy, but Wednesday also is completely real. Too real for something like this that would result in Federal charges and potentially harm or kill someone. Maybe there could have been a different way to achieve that prank that doesn't trigger everyone's already too worn mass-murder-panic buttons and not suggest yet more ways for unwell individuals to "make their mark" in history or "get back at all the squares who just don't get how much they're hurting or how messed up life really is"? We get it, we were young once too. It gets a little better as you grow, but it never gets 100% easy, the important thing is that you try to be kind to yourself and really think through the safety and impact of each heavy decision you make. Learn death metal and scream-O. Write music like the Cure. That very deliberate choice by the writers was really not helpful for our young minds who are learning the line between safe expressions of negative emotions and empathy for others, belief in the common good... I know it's pretty thin on the ground now and this was an easy way to be "cool" and build Wednesday's following/status/character, but explosion? Running crowd? Too real. Not ok.) Sorry, extra rant.
That’s such an interesting journey, thank you for sharing! And of course I agree with a lot of what you said about our approach to music education, and the importance of accepting the realities of the lifelong learning trajectory. Not sure if I know the specific TwoSet videos you’re talking about but I’ll try and check them out, that’s definitely an interesting discussion! They’re typically really good about dismantling or at least poking fun at more institutional values 🤔
@@NotesWithNicholas I'm a little extra salty about it, granted, but as a former Elementary General Music Teacher, I was inundated with the results of our societal misunderstanding of music skill acquisition and "talent" and TwoSet really didn't address the issue in any helpful way and definitely added to the misconceptions and gatekeeping mythology of those with a certain music skill and those without, frankly not even very carefully identifying it when it presented itself. There were moments when they realized their friend surprised them, but I didn't see them apply very much critical thinking and an inclusionist/music education advocacy lens, so I take it upon myself to call that out and encourage them to discuss those videos with music education professionsals who study music learning at very high levels and great detail, there's a great opportunity for informing their public there, which they usually do so well.
Great video (and new channel)! Not a cello player, and I definitely learnt a lot from that. Easy to follow, great video quality overall, I hope you'll continue to push some of your musical ideas on here. And maybe add some cello playing to illutrate your ideas here and there? Not sure if it can be incorporated easily into that format.
Really appreciate that! And I will definitely incorporate some cello playing. I filmed some for this video but didn't end up using it because it messed with the pacing, but I think I have a better idea how to do that now ✌️
Have you ever seen a 1991 movie called, "Truly, Madly, Deeply"? It stars Alan Rickman and Juliet Stevenson. It's about a female cello player who is in mourning due to the death of her love who was also a cello player. One day while in deep sorrow in her apartment she is profoundly playing her cello something unexpectedly happens in the middle of her practice. Not to spoil anything but she suddenly finds that she is not the only cello player in her home.
My introduction to modern music and cello is Apocalyptica. The energy of them live is wonderful. Wednesday gave me that vibe, darker, and edgier than something classically expected. Really enjoyed this video
And she is actively taking fencing as well. She talks about her daily routines and typical schedule, and it includes an hour dedicated to practice and weekly lessons. Definitely some cool skills that can advance her career and personal enjoyment.
I never really played an instrument but I always had a appreciation of music orchestration and I loved the use of the cello which I agree has never really gotten the love like other instruments. Really enjoyed your insight as a cello player.
If they do a second season, I kind'a hope Wednesday plays "As tears go by". I think it might fit in with her character, and it is another Stones song, after all. Edit: For anybody who doesn't know the song, here's one version on cello: th-cam.com/video/qf9WtFD2ScE/w-d-xo.html I don't want a re-hash of it. I want to hear Wednesday's take on it.
@@sannevorrink - I would've been shocked if it weren't. The real question now seems to be whether it'll be on Netflix or Amazon though. ...or at least that's the last I've heard about it.
Great commentary, Nick! There is an arrangement floating around on the internet of Wednesday's cello cover. It needs work to make it playable for most cellists. A project on my list. Nice to meet you here.
Thanks Karen! That's going to be a fun project for sure, the most rewarding part is always figuring out a way to play that is comfortable as well as expresses what you want to ✨
I don't play Cello but I had all the excitement and the same reaction as the characters in the show 😂💜. That bow bounce, if she actually did play that part, is extremely difficult (coming from experience trying to learn violin during lockdown) and overall absolutely wowed me. I'm more of a classical guitarist, but I absolutely lost it when I heard Apocalyptica that I had to rewind back to that part/do a double take. I can only imagine it was all Danny Elfman who chose the pieces (with some help, possibly) bc he's seriously genius. Even his own pieces with Oingo Boingo are great!
Lots of respect for how convincing it looked! I think anyone learning a new instrument (like yourself) knows it takes a lot of time and repetition for it to feel and look natural. I need to get into Oingo Boingo haha, where should I start? 😛
@@NotesWithNicholas any and all Oingo Boingo is great! My fav track is "Insanity". He does have some that will make you do a double take like "I Love Little Girls" he's not talking about minors but more shorter females lol so def watch the music video. I want to say he released more new tracks recently too.
@@winstonchaychel thanks for the recommendations! Just checked out "Insanity," I actually didn't expect to hear such a clear connection with his soundtracks!
I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of Rasputina, that was my immediate vibe. Gothy, cello. I was familiar with them before apocalyptica. I remember hearing people talking about cellos playing rock music and I’d mention rasputina and they were always talking about the other.
Cello is the greatest solo unaccompanied instrument in my opinion. As a music major listening to cello solos at times felt like I was listening to a trio.
Thanks for joining me for my first video! Let me know what else you'd like to see!

It is just so refreshing to see an actor actually learn the instrument enough to make it look believable instead of all the cringy scenes from films where the movement, tempo, body position, bowing and fingering doesn't match up at all to the soundtrack. I hope Jenna is enjoying learning and keeps it up!
Refreshing is a good way to put it, I wasn't expecting this at all! 🙌
She have said it's something she wants to pursue
Cello, fencing… with the amount of passion she puts on her craft I’m excited to see her career going forward.
Well I’ve seen videos where she’s actually leaning to play the songs not just mimicking, so I believe she was playing parts herself
Definitely agreed on this, it's a great fit!
At 15:58
are they really Jenna Ortega's hands
compared to the shot where you see her face in the same shot
I am wondering if she had a cello double.. for them double stops
Some people were saying they might have used a double when you don’t see her face in the shot! 🤔
@@NotesWithNicholas there are a few shots where you can't see her face... and they are always 'complex' finger movement shots
I just wish my fingers moved that well 😎
Yeah that makes a lot of sense!
Haha yeah trying to keep things positive over here! The show got so many people excited about the cello so I would say they did a fantastic job 👌
I actually really like how in the show it's played "less lively and more perfect" because that sounds very much in tune with Wednesday's personality. Let's not forget there are hands running around, magicians, monsters... so it's not too long stretch to believe Wednesday playing in an impossible way.
Very true, it fits her cold and distant personality!
Oh wow I'm really glad to hear that, thanks so much for watching! 🙏
Great vid, thank you
Love the new channel Nicholas! Glad you have a space to speak your musical mind now, the world deserves to hear 🥳
That's so sweet, appreciate you being here! 🙏
Absolutely recommend their gigs!
saw them live in kc mo that was a highlight of 2019 before the world when to shit ...
Ooh yes they are amazing, what you said is such a great way to describe their music! ✨
I saw them 14 or 15 times already, including in Helsinki at Tavastia. Everytime I left energized from their gigs
Heii torilla tavataan 😁
Thanks for being here! And yeah it's been really cool to see more people interested in cello from this show ✌️
Hello from Hershey PA 😊
I watched your cover of “Paint it Black”… I thoroughly enjoyed it and will watch it again and again! Keep putting videos out there featuring cello virtuosos, with your interpretation of them.
I have become a huge fan of the cello, mostly because of this show! The sound you get from the cello is so magical to my ears. If I were back in grade school, I would want to learn to play…
Wednesday is my favorite show on Netflix… I binge watch it all the time! Thanks for your video, can’t wait to view more!
Late reply but thank you so much! I love to hear that more people are interested in the cello from this show! 🙏
Hbg here neighbor lol. I too binge and love a good string! 🖤
As another fellow cellist and fan of Wednesday, I found this video very interesting and I'm glad that the cello was incorporated in this show. My friends now think that the cello is cool! Nice video, and subscribed.
I wish I chose Cello. Bass got 0 love and I wanted to play like Epic Style music like Two Steps from Hell and instead got Call Me Maybe...
Thank you so much, will definitely be sharing more on this channel! 🙏
Fun fact: after the scene 4:45, u can notice the score Wednesday uses is actually cello Bach suite no.1 prelude lol
Great easter egg! 👌
I love the explanations ... insightful - not exactly guaranteed on TH-cam.
You had my thumbs up within the first minute.
Wow really appreciate that, thank you! ✌️
Thanks so much for the kind words, haha also hoping for the same! 🙌
The editing and music should be nominated for an Emmy. For series television it comes off as much more cinematic.
Thanks for adding all those links in the description
Oh yeah of course, I was excited to reference a bunch of things that I thought people should check out!
growing up playing the violin, i swear that every violinist secretly wished they played the cello. i think theres something about the full body physicality of it thats just as impressive as the fast & technical work on violin. its such a passionate and moving instrument
Haha this is what every cellist wants to hear 😅 huge respect to violinists too!
I did! And they told me no...that i had already invested too much time in the violin. I always wanted to play cello
@@floralcat7328 so i wonder if at 50 i could pickup the cello
@@juliecolemannelson6849 Why not? It's always worth a try, and if the only thing you get out of it is a new found appreciation for what cellists actually do when you hear them play, that's great on itself. But I think that you're definitely gonna get past that stage pretty fast :)
Amazing video! Looking forward to more videos talking about cello stuff in the future :)
Appreciate you Jeremy! Looking forward to more conversations with you too 🙌
"it hurts inside to be hitting your bow on the string" as a violinist I felt that
The 'colegno' bit that Wednesday plays could be a nod to Wednesday's fascination with the dark and sadistic, its followed by a book being ripped too. Two 'damaging' themed tones layered over the visual murder themes.
That's very true, the col legno sound is also commonly used in the horror / thriller genre as more of a sound effect!
This was well done. The presenter Nicholas, has a personality of the right blend of subdued repressed emotion and excitement, knowledge of the subject matter. And the right bit of whimsy at the end when he mentioned the painter got the fingering wrong.
Hey thanks so much, glad you enjoyed this! 🙏
I found you through your cover of paint it black and loved it. It’s awesome to see you do this video💖
That's so cool, thanks for being here! 🙌
I did too!
saludos Nicholas!! I am a violinist but I really enjoyed this video you made about the cello playing of Wednesday!! Your channel is so refreshing and insightful!! Thank you for this contribution!!!
Really appreciate that, it's awesome to see other string players here! ✌️
For someone who just started playing RECENTLY, her posture is better than any cellist I know (4-5 years of experience)
She had 4 hour lessons 6 days a week for over 6 months before filming
@Darth Awar Lmao I don't know where you got those number from, nobody has got time for that much amount of practice. Let alone an actress
@@DarthAwar It was twice a week for 2 months actually.
Didn’t even see the show and I have no idea about how to play the cello but I LOVE your breakdown! I’ve been listening to you for years! Keep sharing what you love!!!
Awe thanks so much for checking it out still, really appreciate the support over the years! 🤗
That is so cool, you keep on being amazing too! 🙌
This channel is such a great addition to your usual content! It's great to hear you talking for the whole video. Looking forward to more future analysis from you. Subscribed!
Awe really appreciate that, thanks so much! Glad I finally set this up 🙏
im not really a music guy but this appeared in my recos and it was a nice and fleashed out video. Nice job man.
Really appreciate that, thanks so much for watching! ✌️
Loved it.
I'm so glad they got Tim Burton to direct it! He really has a knack for odd characters
This is my first time seeing your channel but I have to say, I'm hypnotized by how elegant your hands are.
Really enjoyed it
Really appreciate your comment, thanks so much for watching and the kind words! 🙌
Metallica worked with the San Francisco orchestra when they made the S & M album. The conductor along with Metallica wrote arrangements for the orchestra rather than just having them play along with Metallica. One of their best live albums if you ask me.
That's a super interesting crossover, thanks for pointing this out! ✌
It might be the best live album in history.
It sounds like Zorro music. 😂
You seemed like a really nice and genuine person right from the start of the video I didn’t even finished before I subbed. I hope you get wayy more subs in the future you deserve it. :)
Wow that is such a nice thing to say 🙏 thanks so much for the sub too!
Congrats on the new channel! Can’t wait to hear it :)
Thanks so much! 🙏
I've always been a fan of cello. I really enjoyed the inclusion of this instrument in the story of Wednesday. Finally getting the spotlight it so richly deserves.
Loved this. I don’t play anything but really love hearing you talk about this. Thanks for the links.
Late reply but thanks so much, I really appreciate that! 😊
Giving me Charles Cornell vibes! Super excited to see where you take this channel, Nick!
Ooh yes I love Charles Cornell's videos, thanks so much Gerald! 💛
I've loved Apocalyptica for a very long time, so it was fun hearing how much you enjoyed them too. Great video, Nicholas! Looking forward to more in the future!
Thanks so much Brandon! It was great to hear them in a show centred around a cellist 🙇🏻♂️
They always do such a great job of incorporating vocals in their music while still spotlighting the cello too 👌
I like this so much! You have very clean videos, everyone should learn from you
Much appreciated, thank you! 🙏
Absolutely in love with your new channel. It's clean and crisp. Your commentary is very insightful. Can't wait to listen to all of your commentary!
Wow that means a lot! I'm looking forward to making more ✌️
This is so good!!!
Wow that sounds like such a great class, glad you got to take it! And thanks so much for the sub 🙏
Bro, the quality of this video is amazing.
Really appreciate that, thank you! ✌️
This is such a sweet comment, thank you so much! 💛
Amazing!
Thanks so much Jeff, appreciate the kind words too! ✌️
omg i been waiting for more classical yt thank u so much!!!
Great insight on all the sceens very interesting. The music was very noteworthy in the show so i'm glad youtube lead me here
Thank you so much for creating this video! It feels very nice listening to you talking so passionately about this masterpiece. A little tip on the side, put your camera a bit closer to the computer, you won't have to look to the camera more, but it'll still create the feeling that you are talking more to the viewers! Love your playing btw., you're such an inspiration. :) Have a nice day
Awe thanks so much for watching, and also for the feedback 😊
Omg this is your first video I can't wait to watch you grow
Thanks so much! I'm excited about this new channel 🙏
A comedy series “the IT crowd” (it’s on Netflix) has an episode prominently displayed cello playing. The episode is called “Moss and the German”. The cellist even played the theme song of “IT crowd” at the end
Oh wow I hadn't heard about this, thank you! ✌️
Fascinating, brilliantly explained and expressed. Subscribed.
Really appreciate that, thank you! 🙌
As an Orc Dork myself, I’m always happy to see any orchestral string instrument represented. In my high school, the band got all the glory and first pick of music, and we got the leftovers of music and budget.
That's really interesting, none of the schools I went to ever had an orchestra 🤔 the band is definitely the staple
Subbed. 😊
Hope you'll have the opportunity to try out the cello! Thanks so much for sub 😊
It may have been played on carbon fibre cello to reach this cleanness of the sound in the arpeggios. They are known to sound cleaner when playing double stops and play more effortless. The Lewis & Clark 5 string might do very well for these type of passages.
Hadn't thought about a 5 string cello, that would be really interesting! 🤔
So glad I found your video. I loved the Wednesday series and am looking forward to a 2nd season. Your commentary on the cello playing was interesting and adds to why the quality of this show is so good.
Thanks so much, I'm looking forward to season 2 too! ✌
I loved all the songs she played in the show while watching it, and I loved this video as well. This channel has started out strong, keep it up!
Edit: Winter hits HARD
Thanks so much, and totally agree about Winter! 😅
I hope this channel starts to grow! This kinda reminds me of TwosetViolin's videos where they react to violin playing in movies and show.
Thank you so much haha, always love TwoSet's videos 😅
I had been putting off watching the show but your video made me want to watch the show before watching your video, I was so curious about your analysis but didn't want to spoil the show 🤭
Oh yes I should have said spoiler alert 😅
Violinist here! New to your channel! I appreciate the breakdown presented in this video. Will continue to watch more vids
Thanks so much and welcome, great to see fellow string players here! ✌️
Wow thanks so much, that really means a lot! 🙌
Paint it black, the orchestral version I didn't know I needed till now.
Wednesday brought me back to cello. I'm getting one to play for the first time since high school ❤️
Truly enjoyed the performance walkthrough. Not too technical for us layman’s to understand, but enough to educate us, Bravo.
This means a lot, thank you so much! 🙏
Thank you so much for all the links! I have a hard time hearing, so that saves me a guess at their names to search for them 💖💖💖
Oh yeah to be honest one of the main things I was most excited about was just to show people those links! ✨
Excited for your new channel Nicholas!
Thank you so much Jim! 🤗
Ive been following you and your music for a few years now! Great to see your channel show up on my feed - had no idea you were on youtube. Just subscribed !
Oh that's so awesome, thank you and I'm really glad you found this! 🙌
I’ve seen a couple people mention Air Wolf being their introduction to the cello, I’ll definitely have to check this out! ✌️
ooOOh! this channel looks cool! can't wait to see where this channel goes :)
Awe thank you so much! 🙏
Great vid Nic! Looking forward to your next!
Thanks so much John! ✌️
I'm excited about this new channel, I love your work❤️
Thanks so much for being here! 🙌
I filmed some for this video but didn't end up using it because it messed with the pacing, but I think I have a better idea how to do that now ✌️
Such a great video and breakdown. Love it!
Thank you so much! 🙏
11:37 we do
had I neighbour practicing violin and I was always like that when I was hearing
Haha that is a relief to hear 😅
If you pause at 15:59 you will see the hand of the real person who is playing the music. She got the hand of a 60 year old
Good catch, I thought it looked older but wasn't sure 🤔
Have you ever seen a 1991 movie called, "Truly, Madly, Deeply"? It stars Alan Rickman and Juliet Stevenson. It's about a female cello player who is in mourning due to the death of her love who was also a cello player. One day while in deep sorrow in her apartment she is profoundly playing her cello something unexpectedly happens in the middle of her practice. Not to spoil anything but she suddenly finds that she is not the only cello player in her home.
Ooh I will definitely check this out, thank you! 😮
Amazing video, great to se insights from an actual cello player. Greeting from Brazil :)
Thanks so much, best wishes from Canada! ✌️
My introduction to modern music and cello is Apocalyptica.
The energy of them live is wonderful.
Wednesday gave me that vibe, darker, and edgier than something classically expected.
Really enjoyed this video
Apocayptica definitely introduced so many people to the cello and I love them for that! 🙏
Jenna Ortega learned to play the cello for this show. She is a multitalented young lady!
And she is actively taking fencing as well. She talks about her daily routines and typical schedule, and it includes an hour dedicated to practice and weekly lessons. Definitely some cool skills that can advance her career and personal enjoyment.
I would love to be an actor like her, and get to take similar lessons and show them off to the world! It must be great!
Yes but you don’t hear her playing, it’s other people playing, not sure how much she can play
I never really played an instrument but I always had a appreciation of music orchestration and I loved the use of the cello which I agree has never really gotten the love like other instruments. Really enjoyed your insight as a cello player.
Thank you so much! 🙌
Fell in love with this one with Wednesday playing her cello!!
If they do a second season, I kind'a hope Wednesday plays "As tears go by".
I think it might fit in with her character, and it is another Stones song, after all.
Edit: For anybody who doesn't know the song, here's one version on cello:

I don't want a re-hash of it. I want to hear Wednesday's take on it.
Second season is confirmed!
@@sannevorrink - I would've been shocked if it weren't.
The real question now seems to be whether it'll be on Netflix or Amazon though.
...or at least that's the last I've heard about it.
Great idea, Wednesday's version would definitely be interesting. I'm excited to see where they go with the cello in the next season 🙌
Great commentary, Nick! There is an arrangement floating around on the internet of Wednesday's cello cover. It needs work to make it playable for most cellists. A project on my list. Nice to meet you here.
Thanks Karen! That's going to be a fun project for sure, the most rewarding part is always figuring out a way to play that is comfortable as well as expresses what you want to ✨
I saw your thumbnail and I thought you were Joseph Gordon-Levitt in DonJon watching Wednesday on your computer; I got scared for a second.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and insight with us! Am so excited to follow you!!
Thank you so much! 🙏
I think the piano is.
