IMPOSSIBLE Wednesday Cello Challenge: How I Lost $250 to TikTok

  • In the very first episode of the Netflix series “Wednesday”, the main character Wednesday Addams plays a cello version of “Paint It, Black” by The Rolling Stones. This rendition was particularly intriguing to me as a professional cellist as it features some impossible cello playing, one of the more egregious examples being these arpeggios. As a result, I put up a $250 TikTok challenge to see if anyone could actually do it!

      You could save a lot of time and also greatly improve the viewing experience for us if you removed those outdated hectic zoom/crop jumps every other second during the speaking scenes. Look at the editing style of yt professionals, e.g. Daniel Schiffer, Scott Manley, Gerald Undone, to name a few. Apart from that, great project.

    Jeremy, this was an entirely wonderful experience! I felt thrilled to be playing something which you declared to be "impossible", excited that I could approach this completely untainted by anyone else's playing (even if I'm not entirely satisfied with my final product). It was humbling to be in the company of so many fine musicians. I am also a little embarrassed about the amount of time and effort I spent following the saga. And finally, congratulations to Esther for setting the bar so high; and to Olivia, Chris, Cornelius, Darbello, and Olivér for their excellent playing!

    Millions of teens around the world believe Jenna Ortega was actually playing the cello in these scenes because she took a couple cello lessons in preparation for the role

    • @theoreticalreality
      @theoreticalreality ปีที่แล้ว +247

      maybe now so many teens will be curious to check out cello because they saw someone from a TV show that actually tried to learn it, isn't that cool?

    • @sameash3153
      @sameash3153 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      @@theoreticalreality no. People always throw that argument around whenever anything like that happens. Reality is these things are fads that people forget about almost instantly. I'd rather have people discover the cello through Bach than Netflix.

      @@sameash3153 as opposed to them not discover it at all?

    • @sameash3153
      @sameash3153 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@wafflesonfire9716 False dichotomy, we don't have to assume that because they didn't take part in a fad that they will never discover the cello ever in their life. Even if my take may seem snobbish I am more optimistic than that. I've gotten a lot of people in my personal life to love classical music and inspire them to play instruments or at least try to learn, I think we all as musicians should be that model. I think we should make classic cello repertoire and tradition accessible to the public, show them that it's not mystifying, that anybody can listen to classical music, that there is a "special piece" for every single person that is totally unique to them, and so on. I want people to respect the tradition as it is. When people try to adjust to fads, the fads come and go, the audiences don't stay forever, interest dwindles down, and performances date themselves awkwardly. Like: there are cello covers of Gangnam Style out there. That stuff is "cringe" now. Haydn will inspire people just as much as gangnam style would, so why do we pretend that people won't or can't listen to Haydn? I just show people the Haydn cello concertos and they love them instantly.

While Chris, Esther, and Olivia did incredible, none of them sound as clean or as in tune as the studio recording even with the very creative solutions. Her movement even though it is the most complex is also the least noisy, which from a technical standpoint makes hers the best.

    As a musician but non-cellist, if I had to pick one, it HAS to be Esther. Hers sounded, to my ear, the nearest to the source material; and I know the Wednesday braids don't count for anything, but they were a nice touch. Olivia sounded like she played a similar and good but fundamentally different piece as she managed to leave strings ringing to create audible arpeggiated chords rather than distinct notes. Chris was really good, but even I could hear intonation issues that I wouldn't have accepted in a recording scenario without asking for another take. I think only Esther really nailed it, and the fact that she did so with such rapid and impractical hand movements while maintaining intonation on the shifts is just incredible.

    I watch the video called WEDNESDAY - Paint It Black for CELLO SOLO (Intermediate) and looks more easy and sounds nice so its not impossible to play .

    Let this be a lesson to you.
    Just because YOU can't do it, doesn't make it "Impossible".
    At $250.00, a pretty cheap lesson in humility.

    I listened to the two first prize winners several times and honestly I agree it's a draw. They are both exquisite and in my opinion, while different are also equal. The runner up was good but just not as good. Had there only been one first prize I think it would have come down to a coin toss. Good outcome. I don't play cello but I am an enthusiastic listener. I'd be interested in hearing Yo-Yo Ma's take on this.

    I'm so glad about the winners! The runner up's intonation problems were a little too egregious for me.

    So who is the cellist that played in the show? I know it's not Jenna Ortega.
