Superman’s Classic Theme is Back – Trailer Reaction
Thoughts on the upcoming Superman film directed by James Gunn, featuring the return of John Williams' classic Superman theme.
🦸‍♂️ Superman Teaser Trailer: th-cam.com/video/uhUht6vAsMY/w-d-xo.html
In our current era of nostalgia, audiences seem to be yearning for something more hopeful and optimistic than the darker, grittier film adaptations of the mid-2000s and early 2010s. James Gunn's Superman (2025) is leaning into this sentiment, billing itself as a return to classic form for the character. And of course, it features the return of John William's iconic theme from the 1978 Superman film.

    52:22 I think you’re putting a little TOO much weight on the songs to do all the storytelling and discrediting the dialogue and story in between the songs or during the song breaks. Sure, if you only listened to the album without watching the movie, I can see why you wouldn’t buy their friendship.. but you did watch the movie are there was plenty that happened between them that showed why they’d be friends and how they’d gotten so close so quickly. Their dance at the Ozdust alone was so intimate with nearly no dialogue from anybody in the room, and yet you can feel their entire relationship shifting. It’s a musical, but a film too. There are many ways to convey relationships progressing outside of lyrical content, the body language of these characters was a huge factor. Think about the moment when Elphaba cries during their dance and Glinda wipes her tears and signals that it’s ok or when Elphaba winks at Glinda to comfort her during their goodbye in Defying Gravity (both improvised moments), it’s these raw and very small moments that show us they’re true friends. Neither of them necessarily need any major incentive to be friends, they just both needed to realize that they were never enemies. Their relationship is transformative, not transactional. That’s what I love about it. I hope my comment helps you see the film a little differently.

    51:56 I’d disagree on the losing sight of Elphaba because the prophecy itself is foreshadowing the end of Act 1 and Elphaba’s role in it. “In Oz’s darkest hour Though we can not say when There will come one with a power to read The Grimmerie again And Oz, which had been sad and blah Once more will sing a joyous Ah!” This served as the passing of the torch from Idina to Cynthia as Elphaba, but I also feel like it reinforced that even though Elphaba and Glinda’s goodbye was bittersweet, Elphaba was triumphant and joyous with her decision.

    Correction..the Willaims theme has been inseparable from Reeve's Superman. I've been a Superman fan for for 48 years..and I think the Zimmer MOS score is far better..and it didn't have any of the Williams theme in it..at all.. And there was nothing cynical in Snyders Superman movies. The general audience liked those movies. And Man of Steel wasn't dark..previous versions were just extremely light..Which many Superman comics are not. Snyders take on Superman was so optimistic that it helped many people overcome depression and suicilal thoughts .

      “The general audience liked those films”. Come on, that clearly wasn’t the case. MoS did okay but not amazingly well and BvS massively underperformed. You can say that $875 million is good but it’s really not for the first feature film starring Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Not when movies like Aquaman, Captain Marvel, and Black Panther made over a billion dollars.

    For popular i feel like thats kinda the point, Elphaba doesnt view them as friends yet but Glinda shoving her views in her face to try and make up to her in her own way, doesnt mean its the best way, and after that we do get the sad song showing elphabas actual thought process, she really wasnt mentally there during popular and moreso in her head and in alot of worry

    • @jaymabry1277

      @NotesWithNicholas 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I like this interpretation of Popular, and it lines up well with how they presented it in the film! But then it kind of undermines the moment where they dance together at the Ozdust, which people are saying explains them becoming friends. Overall I can appreciate a depiction of a relationship that takes some steps forwards and backwards, but I also feel after Popular it never really takes another big step forward for them to pronounce themselves “best friends” by the time One Short Day is finished or for it to be tragic when they part ways.

  • @NotesWithNicholas
    @NotesWithNicholas 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Teaser trailers are my jam because they typically feature music in a more prominent way, and are more focused on the overall vibe of the film over the plot. Really interesting to see this iconic theme re-used in a way that makes a statement about how the upcoming film will depict the Superman mythos.

      Glad I'm not the only one who felt this way haha! People are saying there were deleted scenes that developed their friendship further, but the runtime of the film is already quite long. I think establishing a stronger sense of purpose for each of these characters would have done a lot of the work, and their relationship could have been developed more clearly through the actual songs - not more breaks within the songs, but in the lyrics of the songs and the visual content that accompanies them.

    I think Elphaba and Glinda’s feelings in One Short Day make sense on a lot of levels. First of all, on a more literal level - for Elphaba, the place is *green* and no one judges her for her color, which is what she’s wanted all along. For Glinda, she’s painted as someone who’s ambitious and status-oriented, and you can think of the Emerald City as THE glamorous big city in their world. Second, like everyone else in Oz, they’ve already grown up idolizing the Wizard and the Emerald City so of course it’s meaningful (this is also shown in Elphaba’s childhood at the beginning of the movie). Third, I think it depicts a pretty relatable/common feeling for anyone who feels stuck in a smaller town and who finally gets to visit this big city that is bustling with possibility, diversity, culture, etc. And I think the aspirations to “get out there” and be in the center of society are also believably shared by both Elphaba and Glinda at this point in the story. And another point on their friendship - I do think they bond on this day for all the reasons I mentioned, but I also think we’re meant to understand that some time has passed since Popular and they’ve already just developed a friendship as classmates and roommates. Yes, part of me would love to get more scenes (apparently some school friendship stuff was in the script but cut), but I also think Cynthia and Ariana do a really good job communicating their friendship just through their body language and chemistry from Popular onwards. Like I buy them as people that get along really well now. And if you think about their characters, their wants and insecurities, I think it makes a lot of sense that they’d be friends once they’re able to really see each other. I mean even when they loathe each other, there’s an admiration there. So we’ve been building from the start, not just in this song. Also they’re each other’s only real friend that we know of, of course they’re best friends lol. School life is just like that. PS: Sorry for writing a whole ted talk lmao

    • @NotesWithNicholas
      @NotesWithNicholas 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts 😊I like what you said about Elphaba seeing that no one judges her for her colour, that's an interesting idea to explore. I think that could have been driven home by seeing that the Emerald City accepts animals for example (her wish), or otherwise show that it's this sense of inclusivity that connects with her. There's that moment where she sees that the Wizard "employs" monkeys but this doesn't happen until after the song. Everything you said about Elphaba and Glinda's experiences in the Emerald City makes a lot of sense to me logically, I just think what I was missing was something deeper that would connect to the vision that these characters have for the world. And in Glinda's case, I think I was missing a feeling that she even has a vision for the world and that this aligns with Elphaba's.

    For the most part I was pleased with the orchestrations, especially the beginning and ending numbers. Also appreciated the nod to the original 1939 Wizard of Oz with the inclusion of those first notes of "Ding, Dong, The Witch is Dead" into NOMTW. Watching it a second time Saturday, I agree that some of the breaking up could have been reduced. For example, Dear Ol Shiz could have started while she was floating in on the boat. I didn't need to see her luggage or her conversation with her parents. Some of it is to lay groundwork that's completely missed in the Broadway production. Overall they can't be too fantastical or magical because Oz has, for the most part, lost it's magic. Everything is now very steampunk mechanical giving the illusion of magic. Same with the lighting... there is a desert less than a mile away from the school. While I don't think it's perfect, it's close.

    • @NotesWithNicholas
      @NotesWithNicholas 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Would be very interesting if they actually went with a more muted palette to intentionally portray a world that has lost its magic! Then does magic return to the world with Elphaba fully coming into her powers? I assume they will keep the same palette in Part 2 but it's something I'll be looking out for. Makes me think about how intentionally the colour was used in The Wizard of Oz movie.

    • @jamesonmagnus
      @jamesonmagnus 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@NotesWithNicholas I was thinking about this when watching it a second time. It's important to note that Wizard of Oz was painted, purposefully over saturated, because of the introduction of technicolor movies. I have seen an interview where Chu stated he purposefully didn't over saturate it because he wanted the movie to seem realistic and that the second part is "darker". It would be really cool if it somehow ended with it being more magical or alludes to the rebirth of magic. Like... maybe something as simple as all the tulips die but start rapidly sprouting again at the end. The magic wouldn't fully come back till Elphaba's arc is complete - which is halfway through the Wizard of Oz's timeline aligning with when the Wizard leaves. The Wicked and original books are far darker than the Wizard of Oz 1939 movie. I think Chu is leaning towards the source material more than the classic movie.

    I keep having to tell myself that everyone is entitled to their opinion as I watch this video. 😂 But I will say that the reason I buy their friendship is because the Ozdust scene was so intimate. And, ultimately, friendship is a decision. So when Glinda says, "Now that we're friends..." there's no reason not to buy it because Glinda and Elphaba have BOTH decided they're going to be friends. It's as simple as that. Lmao.

      I also think we are missing that a lot of time passed during What is this Feeling. Their outfits change, their locations change, etc. I bought their friendship BUT it's important to note that they both still had their differences and Elphaba showed her reservation. I completely bought why they would be excited to go to Oz. Elphaba didn't know the Wizard was a fake yet and she had a cause. Glinda, well, you can't get more popular and influential than the Wizard.

    I love all your musical points and ear for the instruments and vocals! However, I respectfully have completely different opinions than you on many points you brought up in the movie. (Such as there being too many montages, friendship being too sudden for Glinda/elphaba, etc) Tbh, at times as you were describing I’m like ‘how is THIS what he took this away from the movie???’ overall though, great video!

      @@HauteMashups I think the content of the book wasn’t portrayed well into the musical either I guess so here we are. Idk I was very excited for this movie and when it was over I felt like I just sat through a shallow draggy soap opera with Grammy singers. I give the movie a 4/10 and I was expecting a 10/10.

    Was just thinking there was some similarity between this and interstellar (just as pirates of the carribean and gladiator have melodies in common) but thought I might be making connections where there weren't any. So glad to see you agreed with me! Great content, hope to see you do more like this. Will watch your wicked one next as I've just finished that too!

    I enjoyed your breakdown on the soundtrack of Wicked the movie. I all ready seen it twice, and quite enjoyed it. I saw the 2008 Broadway version of the musical. 5th row center, didn't enjoy the musical version. The pacing seemed off to me, Jon Chu's storying telling was better. Your take on the dynamics between Glinda and Elphaba's relationship rolled out differently at times. But both singers formed a unique connection that transfesr from the screen to the audience. Waiting to get the soundtrack for Christmas here, yay!

    All the songs were literally a part of the story and movie. I'm not sure why you think the songs felt like separate stories from the overall story. All your critiques are quite strange and just plain incorrect. Like the Wizard and I scenes were not a montage like you said they were. It was happening in real time, without multiple scenes pieced together. And you contradicted yourself when you said you wanted to see an actual drummer playing the drums in Dancing Through Life (which would never make sense in this scene because they're in a library with no musical instruments), and then you said it would be cool to see Fiyero showing the students what life can be like with flair. These two ideas cannot happen simultaneously because it would make no sense at all. And I would argue he actually does show the students what life can be like with flair: he gets all the students to dance in the library, to stop reading, and to not be quiet in the library. I recommend watching the movie again. And again. And again. Because I don't think you analyzed the movie correctly.

      The movie wasn’t that good. I had very high expectations and I fell asleep in the theater. Singing was good ok but I feel like casting was wrong… there was no chemistry between actors. Felt very choppy and over rehearsed. Also it’s a fantasy movie it should have been colorful and whimsical. I didn’t get that at all. I thought it was boring and dull. Meh the director completely lost me when he have a shot of dancing thru life guy’s ass as he is sliding around. And the aggressive group dancing with aggressive robot like hand and leg gestures and throws was super weird. Looked like people getting a seizure. Just didn’t like anything really except the singing.

      @ I came in to the movie theater with very high expectations for a massive colorful fantasy musical flick, I walked out feeling I have just sat through, almost slept through hours of dull soap opera. Did I mention Marry Poppins ?! Both movies.. now that’s an excellent adaptation of a musical. Great chemistry and natural flow with colors and magic. The actors in the Wicked movie were badly casted, director did not understand the assignment. Singing however was great. But the music overall was quiet in the movie and didn’t create an impact at all. That movie was just like a draggy cheap soap opera with Grammy vocalists.
