The secret to SSTOs that unlocked the door to reusable glory was that you need to fly close to the ocean to build up speed before pulling up to shoot yourself into orbit. I just kept trying to fly into space and failing. I figured it out while messing with a supersonic test plane I built by flying as close as I could to the ocean as fast as I could. I started to go so fast that I needed to pull up to slow down, unless I wanted to burn up. Instead the vehicle ascended like a kite catching a gust of October air and left the atmosphere. Man KSP is fun.
