    If Hornby or Bachmann realeased the D16 in GER condition with it’s blue livery, I guarantee that would sell. From the moment they were first introduced in 1900, people have loved the design of the Claud Hamiltons.

    As far as I know, the only D16s to wear apple green were 8900 Claud Hamilton and the two Royal engines 8783 and 8787. I agree with you on the early variations I think Hornby should do the D15 and the D16/2 as those were definitely in apple green and they both have the decorative valances were the D16/3 (Hornby's model) does not. Also the Royal Clauds were of the D16/2 variety with the decorative valances and Belpaire fireboxes so those would definitely sell well if Hornby were to modify the existing tooling slightly. There's some color photos of 8787 and 8783 if you're interested. :)

    We used to have decently heavy locos from Hornby Dublo, such as their Bulleid rebuilt West Country class pacifics -- fantastic animals, massively powerful and absolutely bullet-proof. In 1961.
    15.27 -- The 'grey' ring on the smokebox should be bright polished steel. This was actually a common feature on locos which had such a ring, especially on lovingly-tended passenger locos.
    An honest and thoughtful review as usual. Thanks for going to all this trouble for us.

    I was watching another channel where the prices of models today were compared with prices 30 years ago, and the conclusion was that £160 is actually not an uneasonable price to pay for a quality model. I was surprised! I guess if the models were still manufactured in the UK, prices would be far, far higher. The D16 is one of my favourites as well.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They sure would be much higher if produced in the UK... and if only new locos were £160 these days.... they're mostly way over £200 now, which is certainly not reasonable!

    Sam - if you look at Hornby's "D16 the Journey "video the opening sequence shows a transparent boiler and there is clearly a small flywheel outboard of the worm, so there have been changes, at some point. I have a pair bought Sept 2015 but I've never opened them up. I did hear they will take the K1 motor - if you could get them

    Would you consider reviewing the new OO9 models that Bachmann revealed the other day? (I was astounded to see that their Quarry Hunslets locomotives could navigate a curve with an inner radius the size of a 2p coin, but) I'd specifically like to see a video on the new Ffestiniog Double Fairlies.
    It is undeniable that OO9 gauge is becoming increasingly popular and I think there would be a lot of interest in your thoughts. You'll undoubtedly mention these releases in your upcoming monthly news video, (given that it is news,) but I'd love to see more on this sort of thing in detail.

  • @lindaoffenbach
    @lindaoffenbach 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yaw dropping beauty, that was our first reaction. This is serious quality. Nothing can actually beat die-cast imho. Die-cast makes a loco look like the real machine in scale. Plastics and all of the modern paintings and methods just still can't touch it. The level of detailing is really fine enough. Again, it is the entire package doing the exquisite magic. If there is one thing I might always consider questionable is plastic running gear. I suppose you don't run your locos daily. Metal gearing will simply last forever no matter what. Perhaps they are not as quiet but that only adds to the seriousness of the model running on the track imho. However, apart from that, this is a yaw dropping model, specially for the money. She's stunning. Btw, quality of a motor is relative I should add. Crawling ability or durability... E.g, the old Fleischmann or Märklin disc collector motors don't do great crawls but last a lifetime and beyond with relatively little tlc.

    I’ve had a D16 for about 3 years and it’s a lovely loco and has the same motor as yours . I also have a Dapol D class which is doing the same as yours , I did test it with a meter and the motor seemed ok I am wondering if it is a gear problem. I did send it back to Rails who said they couldn’t find anything wrong with it but they have said the same about their new gas turbine that can’t handle third radius curves . I’m going to send my D class to Dapol for repair , I have used them before and they were very good .

    My first D16 was also poor at slow speed, so I sold it on (having clearly explained the poor slow speed control). I've since bought two second hand ones that were better runners - still not perfect, but better. I think part of the problem is just the gearing. With better gearing to give a lower top speed, the motor would rev highly and more smoothly at slow speeds.

  • @Madonsteamrailways

    Hi Sam. Nice model; nice review. A couple of "discrepancies" I found surprising and interesting. 1) You said the D16 was designed by James Holden, but the back of the box said it was Frederick V Russell. 2) You described the Westinghouse pump (?) as being "decorated with great precision"; I found the white lines a little skewed. If the model was produced in 2014 (as per the drawing) then perhaps the criticisms (compared to later produced models) was a little unfair?

    Yes, Sam - love these 4-4-0’s, so much so I bought a black one as greens were all sold out. But…..it just will not run smoothly (at any speed) forwards. It’s been back to Hornby twice, but they say it’s fine! It’s not and even though I’ve tried to clean and re-set it, it keeps moving forwards in jerks, but reverse is fine. Weird and very disappointing. I just have to run it in reverse with a freight load. Disappointing service from Hornby.

    Fun fact:
    Claud Hamilton did appear in Thomas and friends passing Toby in 1935 ( in the Thomas & Friends timeline )

    Hey Sam, (change in email) in another video you said that you were going to review american rolling stock or passenger cars. Ex. Combines, coaches, domes, heavyweights, observation, baggage, Railroad post office (RPO), and full dome cars.

    I like the LNER class D16 it has a nice
    finish to the color and the same whth the red lines on the under frame.
    Die cast gives a more proto typical model.
    I agree whith you the D16 is beautiful loco.
    👍👍👍👍👍🇸🇪

    Have you considered reviewing replacement motors and dcc decoders from Aliexpress there are so many and I dont know which ones are good or rubbish
    perhaps you could fit one in your three d locos ,just a thought

    Actually like this loco. Isn't there a older Hornby version out there before they modernised it to this version?

    • @tonypetts6663
      @tonypetts6663 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hornby's previous LNER 4-4-0 was the D49 hunt class. Originally a tender drive "smart" model (same basic chassis for four different locomotives) it's still available as a railroad model, but loco drive these days.

    Dulcie the D16 is kinda cute. I'll never have room for her, but she's beautiful in more ways than one. The only 4-4-0 in my collection is City of Truro, whom I love a whole lot more as my beloved steamy daughter. Remember that Dapol has yet to release their new Manor models, one of which I'm looking to buy part exchange mode: 7819 Hinton Manor. I'd advise you to review one yourself before you make up your mind.😂🙃
