    So Sam with the potential for no flywheels; and it certainly seems there aren't any, why are you giving the mechanism 5 stars? I can understand the Performance getting 4 stars but the Flywheels are part of the mechanism. SO the Mechanism should only be 4.5 stars at the best.
    Come on you can't talk it down and then give 5 stars.

    Way too expensive compared to the Accurascale model. The timing of the announcement and the immediate release stinks of hornby’s underhanded style of business practice.🤬

    I do like new this new Class 37 diesel from Bachmann Sam but its price is too expensive. 244 pounds and 95 pence is just way beyond anyone's budget. I rather buy Accurascale Class 37 diesel for 169 pounds which is reasonable and better.

    The old bachmann one still stands up. But it's always nice to have an updated version. I remember when vi trains released the 37. It was decent in its own right. But if companies are going to flood the market with a class of loco, the class 37 is the one to have lots of variety of. The prices though. I remember paying £50 for a bachmann class 37 and less than that for the vi trains one. The prices these days are why I only watch videos like this rather than partake in the hobby

    • @Simon-Davis
      @Simon-Davis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@robbiegrant5729 Bachmann has been updating their back catalogue for a while now. They've re-done their class 20, 24, 47 and 158 to very high standards recently and the class 25 is coming soon. They also re-did their Warship not too long ago, and improved the tooling on the class 40, 44/45/46...though these could have done with a full re-tool to be honest.

      Yeah, the old one still stands up well. It doesn't stand up as a premium model any more - but at the right price, it still has its place in the hobby!

    • @Simon-Davis
      @Simon-Davis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@christopherstokes9393 Absolutely, I still have every intention of doing the cab glazing correction mod on the 37/0 I started before this one was announced. I'm also keeping the Accurascale pre-order in place. Having said that, if Bachmann produce one in the livery and variant I want I'll happily buy it over a SH old tool one though, unless Accura beat them to a split box Dutch one. Sam seems to have a bit of a duff one if its struggling like that, the 430 I have doesn't have any torque issues. I took it to the club today and ran out of stock at 56 bogies and it still has enough grunt for more; same as the class 47 vid I uploaded a few months back.

      I’m hoping that Bachmann will end up upgrading some of their other locos, as models such as the Hall, Jinty, B1, Standard 3, 4 and 5 and several other models need a few upgrades and definitely a new chassis. Then there are the V1/3 and Ivatt 2MT Tank, which need a new body but have had the chassis upgraded, and other models such as their Peppercorn A1, A4 and 9F could probably use a complete re-tool. That’s just my opinion though…

    It is a shame really because I can't afford both versions of the 37s, as I would like to be able to make a comparison between the two. I'm afraid my money will go to the Accrascale ? model. The 37 has to be my favourite UK diesel locomotive. I've even had a go with a real one

    Good review , will you be reviewing the Accurascale 37?? I agree with you in part regarding 37 production. Bachmann revamped their 20s & 24s, I bought them because of directional lighting so revamping the 37 is die?? Heljan have produced a 47 & 45 which I think 🤔is okay but ho-hum. Now the Heljan class 02 is great and I'm getting 1 of those. What will Bachmann revamp next?? Watch this space....you should do a survey and see what others want to see revamped or created?? Cheers 🍻

    Worthy of note is that AS use a helical cut gear set inside the bogies. This usually results in a much smoother gear train with less friction in operation.

    Oh look a more expensive do it yourself model! When Hornby announced the class 91 they were raked over the coals as Cavalex dropped their Class 91. Bachmann are here doing the same thing but doesn't seem to be an issue. Also Bachmann are charging premium prices can you imagine what their models would cost if they engaged in social media, did giveaways etc like other companies do? I shudder to think. Does anyone know why Bachmanns online presence is basically crap?

    Hi Sam!
    I agree two models of the same class so close together is a bit of a waste, but it should introduce a bit of an "arms race" and hopefully see us with better quality and better value models overall. It of course makes for some great content as well ;)
    With all these super crisp detail models coming out recently, have you considered 1440p or even 4k for your vids? I think most people are viewing on something at least 1080p now and even watching 1440p on a 1080p screen makes a big difference thanks to youtube compression.

    Funniest thing I've heard for a while, you saying the Bachmann Class 37 is better and has the same level of detail as the Accurascale Class 55, the fidelity and accuracy of the AS Class 55 is beyond the Bachmann model and this is no way a 5 Star Rating, 4 at best and look at my other post to see why because your review simply isn't detailed enough and more of a fluff piece avoiding the issues with the tooling.

    Excellent review as always. The pronunciation of the name of the class 37 is CUMBRAN (CWMBRAN). A Welsh town in
    South Wales just north of Newport on the Bristol Channel. A fantastic place for steam locomotives during the mining era.
    This is not far from Dai Woodhams scrapyard who saved many steam locomotives for preservation.

    If direct competition can make both companies make better models for more reasonable price (yes i realize the price of this very loco has peen pointed out as too much, i mean when Accurascale releases that might motivate more comparable price from Bachmann).
    I do not mind competition infact i hope it will be very good indicator of what each company can do, yes i would like generation 1 steam locomotives (Coalbrookdale, Locomotion ( NOT a Kylie minogue song one ), Rocket, Puffing Billy etc.) to have more models i also realize those might be more nieche, diversifying model range into engines not yet made is something i consider a good idea if only for preservation of accurate dimensions tho i see some would be less popular than than stars, like how many people would want separate planet and planetee models?

Will wait for the second tranche of the Accurascale model as I think the first tranche is already sold out, in any case they haven’t modelled any of the variants I want . I know it would be expensive Sam, but would be really interested in what Accurascale and Bachmann sound locos sound like on DC . I think they still work whereas Hornby ones need DCC

    Its a stunner of a model, but as you say the Accurascale model could well pip it depending on what lessons they have learned from the Deltic. I won't be cancelling my Accura 37 pre-orders any time soon, but I have succumbed and bought the DCC sound (not deluxe) version of this model as it is a simply stunning rendition of the Welsh 37/4s I remember very fondly on the sprinter replacement services of the late 80s and then the North Wales Coast trains out of Crewe through the 90s into the early 00s. I have to admit, a big bugbear of mine is working cab lights when a locomotive is in motion. Having been in a fair share of different class cabs in hours of darkness at various preserved lines, running with the lights on is a recipe for big problems as you literally can't see outside, meaning that signals (especially old semaphores) are very easy to miss. Safe to say I hate working cab lights unless the model is stationary or pottering about on shed, in service though is a HUGE no no.

    • @Simon-Davis
      @Simon-Davis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Another point to consider is that Bachmann have been re-tooling their older back catalogue models to a VERY high standard in recent years having done the class 20, 24 and 47 plus the 158 DMU in the past year and the class 25 coming very soon. With that in mind, the big question about the 37 is more likely 'why not sooner?' rather than questioning whether its directly a result of competition from Accurascale. Another point to consider is Hornbys latest class 31 pricing, which makes this brand new 37 look a bargain!

    Excellent model. In particular, the mechanism is outstanding - to the point where models that previously got 5-star mechanisms likely won't any more, because they won't measure up to this.
    I agree that the £75 difference in RRP (vs. Accurascale's model) is eye-watering. Even if you consider retailer discounts, a difference of almost £40 seems like a lot. However, there are two further caveats that I would add:
    1) The Accurascale price (£169.99) was announced in 2019, before COVID and the supply chain crisis hit. I'm not sure how sustainable that price will be for them in the long run. It's great that they're honouring that price on existing orders (unlike a certain red-box manufacturer beginning with H); however, I won't be surprised if they raise the price for the second batch.
    2) The Bachmann model is a known quantity: you can pay £208.20, know exactly what you're getting, and get it immediately. By contrast, all but one of the Accurascale Class 37s are showing as "Sold out on pre-order", and the people who have pre-ordered don't know what they're getting (the Accurascale 37 looks like it'll be a sensational model, but until the first examples are delivered and reviewed, we won't know for sure). You have to choose whether to pre-order or not - and either way, you're taking a risk: either you pre-order the model (and risk it not being as good in reality as it sounded on paper), or you wait for the next batch (and risk a price increase).
    But if Accurascale deliver a top-quality product, and they *don't* increase the price for future batches, then Bachmann will look a bit silly!

    You reviewed the previous bachmann 37 less than two years ago. You rated it 9.19 -- the 6th highest rating of 40 locos reviewed over the last 3 years. This one, with less pulling power and a huge price increase, finds itself way down at 31st place out of the 40 reviews.

  • @covertjunction3122
    @covertjunction3122 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    An interesting model. 37's should be powerhouses and shouldn't really be phased by 10+ coaches imo.
    Also, regarding the cab lights, it's realistic not to have them on whilst running. It's the same as having an internal light on your car on whilst driving. So, for analogue, I do get that.
    I do feel that it was a tad generous to give 5 stars to a mechanism which doesn't seem to have any flywheels.
    The RRP for accurascale's 37 with full sound is only around £20 more than the RRP of Bachmann's bottom of the range 37, with no sound, so there's that to consider value wise.
    It will certainly be interesting to see what happens in the future.
    Excellent review as always 👍

  • @EsotericArctos
    @EsotericArctos 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    In some ways, having two companies with the same model could be good for pricing. Competition is good for consumers as it usually brings prices down. Well, that's the theory anyway.
    I don't see it as a waste of resources when it is two different companies releasing the same class if it promotes competition. Unfortunately that does not seem to be the case in the Model Railway scene. The prices seem to just keep going up.
    I guess these are designed for DCC more then DC. Flywheels are not so important on DCC as it can be programmed to slow down and speed up realistically.

    Bachmann have also retooled their 20, 24, 25 and 47. So it is not surprising they have retooled the ubiquitous class 37. And Accurascale are also releasing the later privatisation area 37/4s with detail differences including plated over side windows and front end lighting differences, so the new Bachmann 37 is an as-refurbished condition 37/4 which Accurascale haven't actually modeled yet.

    Very thorough review that highlighted several things I wouldn’t have noticed. The old Bachmann 37 is a gem of a loco and for £130 would have a real place in the market to appeal to modellers wanting a nice loco on a budget - there are plenty of us. £210 for this loco compared to the old one and Accurascale’s at £170 is a crazy price. The 47s were pitched at the same price and they are now being discounted to £180. You do wonder if they are taking on Accurascale because they obsoleted the Bachmann Deltic and didn’t want the same for the 37. Not very grown up - they should have done another loco class.

At today's exchange rate of 1.00 GBP = $1.27, cost in dollars was $327.98. (Generally speaking, shipping to me is about equal to the VAT deduction for most items of locomotive pricing.)

    @FormallyknownasE100 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So my two cents on this is that you need to look at the wider picture. There are only a handful of locos that could support two manufactures. The class 37 is very much up there. 70+ years in service and every livery under the sun. Plenty of double heading and they get everywhere. It'd be a bold claim for even a single mile of track in the UK to have never seen one. Almost every layout can justify them and they are incredibly popular with enthusiasts.
    Bachmann was already developing the class 47 new tool before Accurascale came to market with the Deltic and the 37 was the obvious next target to update with similar technology. I don't think this was a cynical stab at Accurascale unlike the Rails Terrier saga. The release schedule lines up well with the Class 47 last year being the major retool and this being this years. It was due for a retool anyway with the tooling being quite old.
    Ultimately, neither Accurascale or Bachmann will lose money on their investment and each has it's own merits. The Accurascale guys have already completely sold out of batch 1 before it's even landed. Batch 2 looks set to get some upgrades with a working fan and should be even more profitable as the tooling is paid off. I doubt Bachmann's examples will remain on the shelves long and neither will Accurascales batch 2.

      That being said why oh why are bachmann doing 37043 as well in the same livery... ...would have been so easy to pick a different name in the same condition for double heading (i.e. people could have bought both).

    Interesting that Bachmann were able to keep this secret. I wonder if that's because they already had all the drawings - etc - that they needed. If Accurascale decided to produce a new Inter-City 125 - which would be good! - they would have to go to the NRM to measure the preserved one (etc). You can guarantee word would get back to Hornby. As you say though, the price of this may be a mistake. An obvious reason for people to wait.

Agree with most of your sentiments though, as regards your ‘conspiracy theory’, one of my old bosses once told me: ‘People think what happens here is 90% conspiracy 10% cock-up whereas it’s more like 90% cock-up, 10% conspiracy’.

    Like Hornby, I just happened to be on their website, and saw some reviews of the railway children 4f, and they were all 5 stars, which means either those reviews are fake, or I think some people may be blinded by brand loyalty.
    One of the reviews mentioned “Hornby’s usual level of precision.” For one of the airfix era models?

      I purchased the Rocket Mail Train from Hornby and they asked we to write a review. I submitted one rating it four stars and it never appeared on their site. The model has 99 reviews and they are all five stars. Suspicious

    I don't think it will hurt accurascale class 37 as it has already sold out and they are on about releasing a 2nd run I think the price has a lot to do with the price of the accurascale compared to bachmann which is significantly dearer.I also believe at the moment Bachmann have no plans to cover the BR green era so I will stick with my order from accurascale

      (May 27, 2024) Rails is listing the Class 37 at 259.99 GBP with DCC sound, 169.99 without DCC. Accurascale themselves list them at 283.00 and 189.00 respectively.

    Nice loco shed load of money though,but most are these days! Regarding it slowing down on the hill,well in the real world trains do slow down on hills ;) so that wouldn't worry me...i will stick to my Lima class 37s,lets say the average nice Lima is £40-£50 (my fav only cost me £28) i could buy 5-6 loco's to this 1. :) :)

    You rated the Bachmann 37 from two years ago at 9.19 -- the 6th highest rating of 40 locos reviewed over the last 3 years. This one, with less pulling power and a huge price increase, finds itself way down at 31st place out of the 40 reviews.

    I prefer the Bachmann over the Accurascale at the right price. With Bachmann you know you're getting a quality and reliable mechanism, but Accurascale is new to the game and I think they prioritise detail over running.

  • @shornford
    @shornford 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    We know from how Hornby operates that manufacturers don't like it when another company takes one of their staple products - and we also saw that when Hattons made their Class 66 as that is another Bachmann product. It is frustrating to see this when there are other trains that have never been made or have no recent tooling but we have to remember that this is all about the business - they have to know their investment into tooling will produce a product that will sell and also keep their existing staple products relevant. Sometimes competition can be a good thing for the customers with price drops but with the product specs being similar, it's a shame as we often end up criticising one company because of another. It was looking good before when we had 3 different class 37 options - hornby (cheap), bachmann (mid range), accurascale (brand new). With accurascale 37s still not here and also sold out, Bachmann will benefit from getting theirs to market. Again, that's business.

    If we have to except the higher pricing of railway models, then it goes without saying the quality of the model has to vastly improve. I'm seeing a highly detailed model here. Which goes a long way towards excepting the price.

    I'm a bit puzzled by the cab lights not working on Analogue, given that Bachmann's Class 85 electric does have working cab lights regardless of whether it's on DC or DCC.

    • @philkeller4170
      @philkeller4170 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Working cab lights on analogue control is representing something that would NEVER HAPPEN IN REAL LIFE. Train drivers are instructed NOT to have the cab lights on when in motion (with the possible exception of some slow shunting movements as it adversely affects their ability to see signals.
      As such Bachmann may have decided that working cab lights under analogue control is not a feature they wish to continue with following feedback from proper modellers (who care about accuracy rather on whether their toy has lots of gadgets)

    Sam I do believe that you are right in having your suspicion of Bachmann's 37 release, although you have very cleverly disguised your beliefs. One question that's resin from this is why British models still have couplings attached to the bogies and not the body? Maybe you can find out ? But like you, I'm very interested in seeing Accurascale's 37 which I'm very excited to get my Hands on soon.
    Keep up your great work 👍

    • @chugwaterjack4458
      @chugwaterjack4458 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      As a US modeler of UK railways, I want the couplers on the bogies. Look at some of the videos of longer locos, like the 37, on a Radius 4 curve (22.5" radius) and consider that overhang coupled to a wagon, and you'll probably see a wagon pulled off the track if the couplers are body mounted. You can just see this if you slow the video down and watch it at abut 30:03. Unfortunately, the buildings blank the worst of the curves. At 38:56, you can really see the difference on these Second Radius curves. Note how much of the coach end is exposed. (That also illustrates why direct reverse curves are not suggested). This is similar to why the big articulateds, i.e.. Challenger and 4000, have the couplers on the front engine, not the body, as the overhang is awful.
