Getting to be so close to the stage for this moment was insane. I had honestly had such a torrid weekend up to that point, but in that one single moment not one bit of it mattered. Pure, unadulterated, HYPE.
This EVO Moment #38 happened RIGHT on the year of EVO Moment #37, 20 years after the moment that made fighting game history. It's insane that White Gi Ken the underdog that overcame the odds now become the Top tier wall that Hugo bust down with his dropkick. 3rd Strike is a one of a kind game, i wouldn't be surprise if 20 years from now EVO would run 3rd strike again and we would get our EVO Moment #39 where in Hugo would get parried by Q with 1 HP and do some wild ass punish. Just like Infinite said, we'll always be trapped in the new world of Street Fighter 3.

For a play to be considered an Evo moment I think it has to share 2 qualities. #1 It has to show an incredible technical feat and knowledge of the game. #2 The most important, it has to have a profound impact on the community and encapsulate the spirit of the FGC. This moment is just that! EVO moment #38

This is what keeps me hopeful they will continue releasing things like Online Edition for this game on modern systems. Seems like something captivating happens at least once whenever 3rd Strike is on the stage. As long as moments like this are possible, I don't think this game will ever die. For a lot of people, this set from Hayao is the highlight OF THE ENTIRE FINALS SUNDAY this year and he didn't even win the tournament. As broken as this game is, we love it. If they don't release editions for modern systems, I hope they revisit the 3rd Strike formula in the future and maybe make a new game around the system mechanics. It's already been 13 years since Online Edition released for PS3/X360, I really hope they don't wait too long. I was 23 when this edition came out, I hope I'm still breathing when they decide to redo this game in some fashion as those consoles are no longer being supported.
This was my first EVO going to and wasn't really into watching 3rd strike, but was like fuck it and went and was so glad to witness this incredible moment.
Hayao's extensive knowledge of Hugo cannot to expressed in mere words. Justin Wong himself did a FT5 match with him, and was swept. In fact, he was KO'd in one round by the very same dropkick that dodged Ken's wake up super. He also Half-Daigo parried Chun-Li's super, countering midway through with a command grab to KO her. He's legit.
2:15 fun fact: this is an anti air parry which has a shorter window. Instead of 10f, it's around 5-6f (forgot the exact number), making this even harder
Some of our team was here for this moment in person - and your recap is almost better than the real thing. Awesome video. And captures that moment perfectly!
Watching the entire set was incredible, my eyes were glued to the screen and when that moment happened I screamed so loud I hurt my throat 🤣Truly Evo Moment 38
"Evo Moment 37" is just a thing the guy who uploaded it to evo's youtube made up. The community is choosing to call this evo moment 38, and it would be cool if Evo also did that, but dont get it in your head that "Evo moments" are some kind of actual series that exists.
This set is the greatest example of what made old school fighting game design so enduring. Where newer games almost entirely rely on universal system mechanics to create scenarios, older games placed a bit more emphasis on unique character traits and tools In SF6, Hugo's drop kick probably wouldn't go over Kens super like that, and I think thats what makes this moment so great. Hayao had the character and situational knowledge to pull of a series of plays like that, pulling one over not only on his opponent, but the audience AND legends alike That is the stuff that makes fighting games beautiful
After all these years, after all these DECADES, in a world where Street Fighter VI is out, the most competitive 1v1 fighting game in the world is _STILL_ SFIII: Third Strike.

I was thinking how I hoped that someone would make a video breakdown of this moment. Then I realized I was like, "YEAH I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS."
This "moment 38" combined with all of the tense grand finals and awesome announcements made EVO 2024 the best yet.
Something so magical about Justin Wong commentating this match and freaking out when Hayao was parrying the ex tatsu. Like his ptsd resurfacing 5:38
Hmm i thought the same
Beautifully explained. Your channel has criminally low views for the work you put in to this.
God I’m so happy I got to see this live man the hype in the arena every time this dude got a grab was fuckin crazy
Getting to be so close to the stage for this moment was insane. I had honestly had such a torrid weekend up to that point, but in that one single moment not one bit of it mattered. Pure, unadulterated, HYPE.
You did an incredible job of allowing a viewer to re-live that moment. You've helped cement the history. Thanks for taking time to make this!
And just like moment 37, no one's talking about the Grand Finals. At least not right now.
CONGRATZ to MOV to winning the tourney!
i don't even know who was against who in the final... this is moment 38 indeed.
After Hayaos matches i just cant watch regular ass third strike chun yun ken lol
Well imo it takes much more skill to use a low tier character to beat a top tier character
Exactly why it's a certified EVO moment.
No one's going to remember GF's of 2024 in five years, but they will remember that Hayao shocked the world.
Grand finals was actually a great set
I'm Japanese too, but it's very rare to see a 41-year-old who looks this young. Time has stopped for him for 25 years😃
He is what?!
Great video! And the song at the end was as clutch as the dropkick. Very good editing. Wish you the best on your TH-cam journey :)
Thank you! Always appreciate the support, motivates me to keep on going 🙏
Thanks for the technical breakdown! Great job explaining just how unique this moment was
Great video.
You explained to a relative noob like me how this moment was incredible.
I love seeing this kind of stuff. That's how you put on a show for your audience. Amazing. So glad to be a part of the fgc ❤
EVO 37 has always been an inspirational clip. I thought nothing could top it. It still hasnt due to its legacy.
Thank you for this video. It has opened my eyes to the such jaw dropping talent. You broke it down in a following pace. I will watch this match for years to come.
You really did this moment justice.
For a play to be considered an Evo moment I think it has to share 2 qualities. #1 It has to show an incredible technical feat and knowledge of the game. #2 The most important, it has to have a profound impact on the community and encapsulate the spirit of the FGC. This moment is just that! EVO moment #38
>magic pixel
>Daigo Parry
>insane tech dodge
>Punish into winning the set
>Has been rizzing the entire stadium the entire set, hyping them up for him
>rewards the audience with a spectacular win ass-pulled fresh out for a live audience and on stream.
This is what we call Peak Gaming Culture.
This video is as incredible as the thing itself, great job!
20 years later to 2004 to 2024 another EVO moment this is crazy!!!
I still can't believe I witness this live from Max's stream. The legendary tatsu parry after EVO 37
Dude really made a freaking epic comeback and was like I'm high fiving everyone 8:22 what a showman I'm a fan now 🎉🎉
"That button is USELESS!"
"My character has no useless buttons, Justin"
Yes, this is worthy of being called "EVO Moment #38".
Im so happy to have watched this live. The crowd went insane
bro got them to rush the stage what a legend
Amazing summary of events, thank you for the video! 🎉
He's legit.
Excellent video, narrative, and analysis! Thanks!! Loved watching this live too but didn’t understand the importance of the HK
2:15 fun fact: this is an anti air parry which has a shorter window. Instead of 10f, it's around 5-6f (forgot the exact number), making this even harder
He says it in the video
@@Zadamanim he doesn't. He says it's a 10f window.
Some of our team was here for this moment in person - and your recap is almost better than the real thing. Awesome video. And captures that moment perfectly!
BEAUTIFUL video.
Watching the entire set was incredible, my eyes were glued to the screen and when that moment happened I screamed so loud I hurt my throat 🤣Truly Evo Moment 38
Do we have an official (or unofficial) Evo number for this moment yet?
it's Evo Moment 38 right?
38
"Evo Moment 37" is just a thing the guy who uploaded it to evo's youtube made up. The community is choosing to call this evo moment 38, and it would be cool if Evo also did that, but dont get it in your head that "Evo moments" are some kind of actual series that exists.
When he split, chat was calling it evo moment 69. 😂
720
Great video, thanks for showing me that. What a legend in that freeze frame ending
Finally. Evo moment #38
For real this was the highlight of this year's Evo.
Edit : btw great narration and editing!
Damn that yukari cosplayer is popping off wild
When in the video?
@@Zadamanim somewhere 7:49, at the audience
Wow what a presentation of how great this is and that "hopes and dreams" kicks in the goosebumps.
Thank you Hayao for making
"Evo Moment #38"❤❤
This set is the greatest example of what made old school fighting game design so enduring. Where newer games almost entirely rely on universal system mechanics to create scenarios, older games placed a bit more emphasis on unique character traits and tools
In SF6, Hugo's drop kick probably wouldn't go over Kens super like that, and I think thats what makes this moment so great. Hayao had the character and situational knowledge to pull of a series of plays like that, pulling one over not only on his opponent, but the audience AND legends alike
That is the stuff that makes fighting games beautiful
Love watching him play. The guys is great and that is right up there with EVO Moment 37.
proof that low tiers are more interesting to watch than top 3
Word dude after hayao went down i didnt feel like watching regular ass third strike
Great video breakdown. Look forward to seeing more
After all these years, after all these DECADES, in a world where Street Fighter VI is out, the most competitive 1v1 fighting game in the world is _STILL_ SFIII: Third Strike.
Great analysis! I really enjoyed it.
This deserves to be called EVO Moment #38 I stg.
Amazing video. More people need to talk about how this was BY FAR the greatest EVO 2024 moment. I popped insanely hard when I watched it live.
Algorithm recommended this. Very glad I ended up here. Lots of fun top to bottom.
Was waiting for this type of breakdown analysis. Thanks for the video!
41 years old by the way.

@@treacherousjslither6920 Literally mentioned in the live footage this was taken from.
@@Somebody374-bv8cd Lies
@@treacherousjslither6920 Can't tell if you're trolling but he's active in SF3 since like 2005. You can easily google "hayao sf3" to see a wiki page about him (and you can see his age there).
1:33 this statement alone always burns me. (Hypothetically) 30 characters release in a game and the masses that play to win stick to 5 of 30. From that movement alone comes SHEEP MENTALITY. So now everyone is led to believe ONLY these characters are good. ONLY they have the best moves. So on and so on. Then something like this happens and the world is on its head. PLAY WHO YOU WANT. LEARN WHO YOU PLAY. HAVE FUN. The "tier list" is subjective. Play for yourself
Fun retelling and explanation of this Street Fighter III 3rd Strike moment and why it was really cool! I was very glad to have caught it live too! :D
9:00 incorrect: If he blocks any *special move* or critical art, he takes damage. You don't take chip damage from normals.
yeah you kids like to exaggerate things to lvls they don't need to be... that man has been playing the game since its inception and has most likely had well over a thousand matches against ken specifically... he knows in end game situations like that MOST Ken plyers are going to opt to use the easiest most effective way to end the match even if its still a gamble if you ply against a certain character most your life you can very much predict what the plyer is going to do with them in situations.. is that drop kick trash for the most part yes but it isn't useless and high chances he's done that to ken plyers more times then you can even know... the jump parry was impressive but again he figured dude was trying to scrub out the match so he predicted the ex hurricane kick
Yeah I agree, you should go next time they have a 3rd strike tournament of similar size/fame as hugo and replicate his run. I'm sure we will see "evo moment 40 justice2120 hugo highlights".
@@R1CON i'm the nxt evo champ cuz i'm right... yeah i can agree with that.. THX

I had never heard of Hayao before watching this on stream, but I instantly became a fan. Dude's energy is unmatched and this set was so sick.
What a guy. The celebration with the crowd made me genuinely happy. Definetely will seek to watch more stuff with him
I don't play fighting games serious at all...but what an amazing moment, and he must have felt like an absolute star in that moment. Good for him, whatta legend
7:51 worthless, but turned into a miracle
EVO Moment #38! It's so fitting this happened while facing a white gi Ken, as if he took it from Daigo himself in #37
Do more of these!!! This was awesome!
Incredible, and I love hearing Justin Wong absolutely losing his mind, always a good time. The crowd to, what a great moment. It would have been notable even in the lower brackets but the fact this dude did this in the finals is just top tier showmanship and artistry.
