    It's so fitting that Justin Wong was one of the announcers commentating on this match. On his channel, Justin has an entire video about a tournament set where his Chun Li gets schooled by Hayao's Hugo. Justin isn't playing poorly, Hayao is just that much better. In fact, when Chun Li attempts a wake-up EX Spinning Bird Kick, Hugo uses the same standing FK drop kick knowing it would have priority. Hayao read it like a book. 🤯

    It's actually even more difficult than you explained. Air tatsu hits at unpredictable timings and can hit an unpredictable amount of times depending on when it is used. And it comes out SO fast you can't just react.
    Hayao had to be SO ready for every precise detail in order to parry the full thing, but also be ready to get the punish on landing. If he tried to parry one more hit that wasn't actually there, he wouldn't have gotten the punish.
    And THEN he used dropkick in the sickest way possible. Such a great player.

    • @ProzacStylings
      @ProzacStylings หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      This might be true for novice players, but an experienced 3S player is going to know the timings and number of attacks from an extremely effective attack from a top tier character, just from experience and memory.

Dont downplay, this is legit harder than moment 37 imo. Tighter parry window, no superflash to telegraph, ambiguous amount of parrys, and then a 2nd hard read after the punish. Its insane

    • @ProzacStylings
      @ProzacStylings หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@SuperLemonfish No, I did not say it's "possible" if you are very good and experienced.
      I said that good and very-experienced players know how many times a certain move will hit in a certain position, because they've seen it literally a thousand times. That's not "possible", that's "virtually guaranteed". Things that are unpredictable for new players are memorized for people with 10,000 hours in the game.

    • @Morancio
      @Morancio 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@SuperLemonfish Parrying Chun's super is way harder than this, i could see how this looks harder, because on paper it is, but air parries aren't that difficult considering you can buffer one when you jump and you do have time to react to the first parry, and is not really that hard to gauge the amount of hits based on height, 100 hours will let you do this, basically any middle C and upper rank in Fightcade could pull an EX Tatsu air parry. The really big brain stuff comes from knowing you could punish the landing (Sometimes you can't do that because if you end up the parries at a weird angle your opponent ends up on the ground faster than you) and using s.HK, worthless move but lets you punish wake up super with EX Lariat. Don't get me wrong, parries were hype but a lot of folks tend to think they are a technical miracle when players just go by feel, you just can't react to most buttons/specials with parry.
      People think a lot of parries are really hard when most of them follow the principle of buffering one when you are near your opponent, if you go to training mode and press both Forward and a button, most of the time you will parry that move, after a certain level you see a lot of players doing exactly this thing, fishing for "safe" parries, mindgames at that level come from buttons delays/timing changes. ChikoPS2 (Chilean Dudley player) does this a lot.

    Moment 37 is the pinnacle of what 3rd strike was meant to be. When the devs allowed super arts to be parried, they probably envisioned someone in the distant future using it to make an incredible comeback happen
    What Hayao did, to both execute and innovate with the drop kick, should not have even been possible. Everyone knew evo moment 37 was achievable. The only person in that entire sold out arena that knew this could happen, with a smile on his face the whole way, was Hayao

    This EVO Moment #38 happened RIGHT on the year of EVO Moment #37, 20 years after the moment that made fighting game history. It's insane that White Gi Ken the underdog that overcame the odds now become the Top tier wall that Hugo bust down with his dropkick. 3rd Strike is a one of a kind game, i wouldn't be surprise if 20 years from now EVO would run 3rd strike again and we would get our EVO Moment #39 where in Hugo would get parried by Q with 1 HP and do some wild ass punish. Just like Infinite said, we'll always be trapped in the new world of Street Fighter 3.

This moment is just that! EVO moment #38

    This is what keeps me hopeful they will continue releasing things like Online Edition for this game on modern systems.
    Seems like something captivating happens at least once whenever 3rd Strike is on the stage. As long as moments like this are possible, I don't think this game will ever die.
    For a lot of people, this set from Hayao is the highlight OF THE ENTIRE FINALS SUNDAY this year and he didn't even win the tournament.
    As broken as this game is, we love it. If they don't release editions for modern systems, I hope they revisit the 3rd Strike formula in the future and maybe make a new game around the system mechanics. It's already been 13 years since Online Edition released for PS3/X360, I really hope they don't wait too long. I was 23 when this edition came out, I hope I'm still breathing when they decide to redo this game in some fashion as those consoles are no longer being supported.

    Hayao's extensive knowledge of Hugo cannot to expressed in mere words. Justin Wong himself did a FT5 match with him, and was swept. In fact, he was KO'd in one round by the very same dropkick that dodged Ken's wake up super.
    He also Half-Daigo parried Chun-Li's super, countering midway through with a command grab to KO her. He's legit.

    This set is the greatest example of what made old school fighting game design so enduring. Where newer games almost entirely rely on universal system mechanics to create scenarios, older games placed a bit more emphasis on unique character traits and tools
    In SF6, Hugo's drop kick probably wouldn't go over Kens super like that, and I think thats what makes this moment so great. Hayao had the character and situational knowledge to pull of a series of plays like that, pulling one over not only on his opponent, but the audience AND legends alike
    That is the stuff that makes fighting games beautiful

    1:33 this statement alone always burns me. (Hypothetically) 30 characters release in a game and the masses that play to win stick to 5 of 30. From that movement alone comes SHEEP MENTALITY. So now everyone is led to believe ONLY these characters are good. ONLY they have the best moves. So on and so on. Then something like this happens and the world is on its head. PLAY WHO YOU WANT. LEARN WHO YOU PLAY. HAVE FUN. The "tier list" is subjective. Play for yourself
