Has Berryessa (Folsom, Oroville & Almanor) Turned Over to Catch Landlocked Salmon? | Episode 1

  • When the lakes turn over, landlocked salmon come out of the depths in huge numbers chasing the baitfish. You can easily limit out in a couple of hours if you hit it right!
    The turnover phenomenon occurs around December or January for Lake Berryessa and results in the water temperature being the same throughout the water column. However, in my years of experience fishing these lakes, I find you can't rely on the reports from the water district and instead you need to look for yourself at the depth that the bait fish are holding. By graphing the lake with my fish finder and then looking closely at areas with Active Target, I've been tracking the turnover progress for the past month.
    This is the first in a series of four episodes on landlocked salmon fishing:

    Just met Alan on lake berryessa today. I was out on lake with my two little kids and only second time at lake ever. I seen him catching fish so I was hesitant on asking what he was using just because haven’t had anyone really want to share there secrets but he was more that generous on sharing advice and also gave us a few setups that he was using ! Just an awesome guy ! Now that’s what fishing is all about right there years and years of knowledge passing it down to me and my kids too thanks again Alan !!! Hope to se you out on lake again !

      Dustin it was nice talking to you yesterday. Berryessa is fishing tough right now as the lake hasn't turned over. Last year I was catching the salmon in ten to thirty feet and limiting out very easy. You can catch these salmon right in the marina when the lake turns over. Give me a shout when your going and I'll give you the scoop! I like that your kids go fishing and you need to enjoy it as when they get older there to much going on in the life and don't go as much!

      First I look for birds as they know where the shad are then I start graphing looking for bait balls. At the first of the year I will have an affiliate who I will be posting the lures and equipment I am using.

  • @Cleantec409
    @Cleantec409 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great job on the videos. Love the channel and always want to learn more. Love to see you do a video on how to find bait balls on your graph, where do you stop your boat before passing over them. How do you correctly spoon for bass. Short small rod movements? How high do you lift your rod? Do you let there be slack in the line as the jig falls? Will bass be suspended on the bait balls? Fish Below the bait ball or above it. You said for salmon you like to fish a few feet above. For bass? I could go on and on but I will shut up now….

    • @AlanFong
      @AlanFong  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Funny you should ask because I'm gonna do one on spooning soon. When I'm spooning for bass I'm usually fishing in 15 to 60 feet of water. So when I'm graphing I usually have split screen so I can see the contours to see where the steeper walls are as the bass push the shad into these areas to ambush them. So I use 2 D sonar in 200 kHz until I locate the balls of bait! This time of the year I'm using 3/4 to 1 3/4oz spoons and I drag the spoon slowly and sometimes I pop it but very short pops. Almost like dragging a worm. Fish below the bait balls and you will catch bigger bass as there lazy and let the small one kill or injure the bait! Keep eye out for my spooning video to come out soon!

    Excellent video Alan! Glad you incorporated the Fishing Is Fun song! LOL! Very informative video coming from a guy that actually knows his electronics. Would be nice if you could do a video on just how to best utilize your Electronics. Also what do you think about just dropping your Fish Hawk to find Thermocline? Wouldn't that also help you determine if lake has flipped?

      On the crappie video I showed how to use your fish finder in different modes like 2D, DI, SI and active live. If I get people interested in learning just basic 2D sonar and posting I will do it lol Just by watching my 2D sonar it tells me a lot about a lake turnover especially in the fall n winter

    Thanks for sharing Alan. I always listen to fishing report on Saturday morning. I know your report is based on actual fishing. I had a real hard time getting Kokanee top bite last year on Berryessa, very frustrating. When you mooch for King Salmon in Berryessa what size jig head do you use. Also what is a good fishfinder for Kokanee fishing. I have an older (6-7years old) Hummingbird 899ciHD that came with the boat I bought last year. I have a hard time using it and don't feel confident in using it. Thank you.

    • @AlanFong
      @AlanFong  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ron last year Kokanee fishing at Berryessa was hit n miss so don't feel so bad as I had some hard days there too. I'm using 1/4oz jighead ten to thirty feet down
      and 3/4oz forty to sixty feet. Your hummingbird is plenty strong for Kokanee fishing you can bring it in and I'll just it for you only need the bring unit.

    Hi Allen , It was nice to see you at the WOC last night. I used to go to the classes you put on at the store. Thanks for the presentation on electrics, it was very informative. I have an older HDS12 that I enjoy very much. I'm very interested in fishing Barressa for the salmon. I have never been there. What launch facility would you recommend or that you use for me to go to? I will be coming to the store before I go to the lake to get the recommend gear and anchovies to target the salmon. Thanks again for providing information to help us be better fishermen!! I 🎣

    • @AlanFong

      Dale I always launch at Markley Cove and turn your graph on when you start heading out as there are lots salmon in the marina area as your heading out. I've caught lots salmon there in the past. But most time I run out to the main body and fish all the main creek channels coming into the lake around Big Island to Putha Creek.

    • @AlanFong
      @AlanFong  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No not all lakes turn over at the same time and if your using graphs with 3000 watts power you can see the thermocline. Usually around this area the thermo line will be around 60-80 feet in the summer. I'will be doing a lot of fish finder videos here real soon.
