Recorded Live: 8/4/1975 - Winterland - San Francisco, CA

    Personnel:
Alvin Lee - lead vocals, guitar
    Chick Churchill - organ
    Leo Lyons - bass
    Ric Lee - drums
    Summary:
Extraordinary blues/rock guitarist Alvin Lee had already begun pursuing his solo career in earnest by the time he returned for the 28th and final U.S. tour of the original Ten Years After. Upon completion of the 1975 tour, TYA would split up and not return until a reunion was staged in 1989.
Although a cult fave, the band burst onto the world music scene after it appeared in the documentary film, Woodstock, one of whose highlights was the performance of "I'm Goin' Home" by Lee and the band. This show, recorded at Bill Graham's Winterland ballroom, opens with a rockin' (but incomplete) version of the band's radio hit, "Rock & Roll Music To The World." They follow it with one their classics, "Love Like A Man." Muddy Water's "Good Morning Little School Girl," is next, and leads to long and tasty slow blues.
A 20-minute version of "I Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes" is followed by a 12- minute but incomplete "I'm Going Home." After a souped-up version of Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen," Lee and the band close with two of their own hits: "Choo Choo Mama" and "Baby, Won't You Let Me Rock 'n' Roll You."
One of the biggest blues/rock acts on the planet between 1969 and 1974, Ten Years After could attribute their far reaching success to two things: Promoter Bill Graham and their appearance in the landmark music documentary Woodstock. Graham was among the earliest U.S. promoters to book the band, and he made them a staple act at both the Fillmore East and West, and of course, Winterland.
By the time this show was recorded. TYA had become primarily a vehicle for Alvin Lee's blistering guitar work, its songs comprised of equal parts rock, blues, and jazz. In 1972, the band would leave Decca Records (the label that signed them in 1967), and move to Columbia's corporate home. Columbia would take the band in a more radio friendly/pop driven direction (hence, the hit single "I'd Love To Change The World"). Frustrated with the popular music trend, Alvin Lee left the band, which disbanded soon after the second Columbia release in 1975.
The original lineup made one reunion LP and did one more tour in 1988/89 before disbanding again. In 2003, Ric Lee assembled the group again, although Alvin would not participate. He was replaced by guitarist Joe Gooch, and the band is still recording and touring today.

Such a "Stone Fox"(as we used to say). I was 16 when I first became aware of Alvin Lee (I will be 72 July 2nd 2024). No wonder I expected more from rock and roll live. I thought they should put into it, what Mr. Lee did. I could say more, but it might be a little off color. I'll text my sister. Shell know what I mean. Ruff--animal magnetism!! Thank you so very much for filming his live performances!! A++++++!!

Too watch Alvin Lee stand on the stage and play that beautiful red 335 was a thrill beyond description. Words just can't explain the experience. Besides Johnny Winter , Alvin Lee remains my favorite Blues Guitar player , not too mention the Band it self Ten Years After. Their in my top 5 favorite Rock Bands of all time. I miss hearing his voice and his guitar playing. Alvin Lee rest in peace my friend 🧡

It's 1973 and I'm a few bongs in. My friends older brother puts on the album "A Space In Time" and as "One of These Days" creeps from it's silent slumber he declares confidently, "this is the greatest song you're ever gonna hear". That was 43 years ago and every time I hear this song I nod my head and say "Jimmy, you son of a bitch...you're RIGHT!"

I saw Ten Years After in a small town in the mid eastern part of The Netherlands, called Didam. It was like '85 or so. The flyer said "It's no joke, it's Ten Years After!". Me and my farmer friend, we must have been 15 or so, tried playing Ten Years After on bass and guitar and listened to it all the time. We had the live album "Recorded live" which is one of the best albums ever. We couldn't believe it, but we went. We didn't trust it till the show really began, because it was sucha small joint. But it was true, it was Alvin Lee! It was a great concert, as I recall the keyboard player was not there but we had the time of our lives!

At the Pershing Auditorium, Lincoln, Ne. he brought the house down. 12,000 people throwing chairs and by the way my wife was hit in the head. Now since I ain't married to her anymore I do not give a fuck. Going Home was a 15 minute rendition of Helicopter's song and it was fucking awesome. Alvin Lee never a dropped note or chord and never a mistake. Quickwater. The concert was in July 1970.

The two best concerts I ever saw were Ten Years After in Tampa, FL 1974 and The Clash in Houston 1979. I hope I got the dates right. What can I say, it was the 70s. Anyway, Alvin Lee was just incredible as was the rest of the band. Amazing show.

I don't remember. Saw a lot of concerts at Curtis Hixon in Tampa and the Bayfront Center in SP. I do remember taking pics using my dad's camera and high speed tungsten film of the TYA concert. Produced a slide show using a TYA concert album as a soundtrack and played it for my friends and family. That was fun.

Saw them at the Musik Halle in Hamburg in Sep '70 just before I returned Stateside. Their live performance was studio quality.

On ne s'en lasse pas. Je connais ces morceaux par coeur depuis mes 15 ans, en 1970, et je les écoute toujours avec le même plaisir.

Got a lot of TYA favourites (like, almost all of their tunes?), but this one's right around the top somewhere.
