You can also get the Longsword meter up by doing a successful foresight slash or a successful Iai Spirit Slash. You could also get the Spirit Reckoning Switch skill, which switches out your regular spirit combo for a better more precise spirit combo. So overall, there’re four ways to increase your spirit gauge.

What blows my mind is how smooth the online play is. I think I've only been disconnected once, and I usually wind up playing with people in Asia because of my weird gaming times.

😂 he did a lot of those when he first started playing. Then he immediately jump into trying to learn combos.
Long sword is really fun but I had to switch over to the hammer. Gonna main 3 weapons since so many of the are fun. Longsword, Hammer and Great Sword are my favorites
Tip use the radial menu for all the items that you use on the dog (sharpening , potions etc) it’s way faster than shuffling through the item menu to find stuff
Him teachin me feels like my 3yo son trying to teach me how to (poorly) colour inside the lines
And my just watchin and agreeing to make him feel better😀
Hey Afro a couple tips
1. You have 2 more counters with the long sword. You have AI slash and foreskin slash
AI slash RZ +B and press RZ when the monster attacks
Foreskin slash RZ and A after you use an attack when the monster is about to hit you
Both of these give you a meter of spirit gage if successfully counter and do god damage.
2. Radial Menu
When using items you can use your radial menu with ur analog for quick access. Radial Menu is so uselful I would definitely look into it.
3. Not a tip but I’ve been playing monster hunter for a long time and I’m a LongSword main. I’m so happy you are playing and if it ever possible I’d love to do a hunt with you .

Quick tip if you press ZR + A you'll do a foresight slash and if you time it perfectly it'll be a counter which fills up the gauge.

afro playing monster hunter, this is what we like to see
Afro just letting you know Sakura slash is pretty good since it does give you spirit levels, but soaring kick gives you access to the strongest move in the long sword arsenal, the helm breaker. To do it you just press ZR after landing on the monster with the kick, and while it does actually *cost* spirit to use, it’s strong as hell and looks sick when you do it. As for building up spirit without Sakura, your other counters - foresight and Iai spirit slash (executable with ZR+A and ZR+B->ZR after making an attack)- also give spirit levels. If you are interested in continuing with MH then I encourage you to hop into the training area and see what you can figure out, cheers.

Part of why i enjoyed MHW so much is just observing the monsters going about their business, they really feel like animals just living their lives, I haven’t gotten to play MHR fully yet, but i do hope that aspect is in the game
Village and Hub quests are all part of the same "Story" , though monster hunter has never really had much of a story.
Village 1-6 basically translates to Hub 1-3
3-star hub hunts are actually harder than 6-star Village hunts because the Hub is set to 2-player difficulty by default, but still very much soloable, so basically youve played the game in reverse :D

Honestly I am happy to see you playing Monster Hunter again. My group of friends stopped playing it for some reason. I completed the game to a 100%. (all quests, sidequests and weapons) an even made a new character to play it again. If someone is looking for somebody to play with or to get some help I would be happy to join and/or give some advice. I am a veteran hunter and started with Freedom Unite. Ok, you need help.
When you get hit and go flying, use ZL+B to do a wirefall recovery in whichever direction you point the analog. As long as you have a wirebug, no longer do you have to wait for the knockdown animation.
im not sure if you werent doing it on purpose or not but just in case you didnt know you can do ZL+B to do a wire bug rebound when you get knocked down on the ground and it will get you back up way faster than just laying there a second. it also gets you some distance from the monster and puts your weapon away so you can use a potion as soon as you land on your feet to recover.

If you get knocked on the ground use ZL and B in a direction to wire big outta the way and automatically sheath your weapon so you can heal faster and get some distance between you and the monster

I legit check your channel everyday before I sleep and as soon as I wake up
For MH contents you can do stories - quests for your build type - e.g healing & fire resistance in preparation for an elder dragon like teostra or smt
If you capture the monster you get less materials (because you end the fight sooner) but there are rare drops that you have an higher chance to get if you capture it (like Rathalos' ruby). But there are also material that you can get only if you kill the monster and carve it yourself (for example, the Nargacuga marrow)
Afro there are 3 counters! First is Zr + A and is called foresight slash, it's great for in combo and if you hit it's free and raises the color of your sword bar. If you miss it takes all your sword energy and leaves you at the lvl you are. 2nd is accessed through the special sheath move which is Zr + B this sheaths and readies your sword. You can hit x for 2 lights attacks if one of those hit your sword energy will passively charge. However, if you wait in special sheath until you get right as you get hit and then press Zr you will do the Iai spirit slash combo which will increase your bar color. You actually don't really want to use the wirebug counter. When you reach red bar try hitting Zl + Y + Zr for spirit helm breaker. Trust me.
I'm maining switch axe right now and decided to give longsword a try today. I'm taking notes.
little tip you have mega potion in the game, and they heal a lot more, maybe full heath
Hey Afro. Just an FYI, after your silkbind attack hit ZR+B to "special sheathe" you can then try to counter an attack with ZR or hit X for a double slash that will auto fill your gauge. I see a lot of comments telling you the moves names without telling you the button inputs. Hope this helps!

Also, I suggest learning to use the radial menu to help speed up item selection

Just a few things he didn’t mention, the village quests are made easier with monsters having less health and only go up to low rank while hub quests have monsters at full health as their made for multiplayer with the monster health scaling up with the amount of hunter in your quest and these quests go up to high rank. The “using wirebugs in attacks” are called silk binds and there are 2 for each weapon with one that you can switch out later. Rewards decreased just means that you loose some of the zenny that you would have earned and capturing monsters gives less rewards but higher chances at certain materials (like monster gems). Otherwise amazing game and he covered it pretty well. Also I love the games and so if there are any newcomers to rise I could probably answer your questions about the series but if it’s how to use a specific weapon just look up Arekz gaming (can never remember exactly how to spell it) or gaijen hunter (also can’t remember exact spelling) for guides.

The village quests and the hub quests are both story quests its just that village quests are restricted to singe player
I hope you aren't forgetting do to the village quests man, you can get a lot of good stuff out of it like two request that gives you a Iron umbrella and large shuriken for your dogs to use in combat. Also you get the village Elder's sword when you complete the village

You really probably should do all of the village quests on your own time or video tbh. If you don't go through the village story, you skip by a certain urgent quest in the middle of HR6 hub missions.
Probably my most anticipated game this year. 75 hours in, not disappointed.

I don’t know if he already knows this now from when this was recorded, but just in case,
You can click Right trigger and B after your Sakura Slash or Roundslash aka 5 right trigger combo, and it’ll put you into a sheath stance. From there you can click right trigger again for a counter or “X” for a double slash that builds the spirit meter.
I hope this helps with your journey, whether that be Afro or someone else in their MH Rise journey
