You dont get it do you? In the UK the marked hp is at the wheels because its done in bhp. So they are both 340 at the wheels marked but the engine is tweaked so its 385 at the wheels according to the dyno from CarThrottle youtube channel
@@EnglishDrifts69GTxRED you got it mixed up. Bhp can stand for either brake horsepower or British horsepower. The British hp is the unit of measurement we use in Europe, it is slightly different from the one they use in America (see Engineering Explained video on the subject). However the bhp used by car manufacturers stands for brake horsepower, which is the horsepower measured at the crank without any losses from the gearbox or drivetrain. The wheel horsepower is measured by a dyno and is the actual power that the car puts to the ground, with the power losses. It's usually around 20% less than brake horsepower. That's why in the joke BMW measured bhp and Toyota measured whp, it has nothing to do with it being in the uk or not.

A car that weigh over 1570 kilos, has "only" around 340 HP and FR layout while doing 1/4 mile in 12 seconds is astonishing. For comparison, Ferrari 360 modena from 1999 that is way lighter ( 1390 KG ) and has over 400 HP, was able to do 1/4 mile in 12,4 seconds. It shows how much has technology developed over the years.
My thought exactly. 12s flat is damn impressive. That used to be a domain of highly worked cars.
Launch control, much quicker shifts and better tyres give a huge advantage, plus the Supra has almost 380hp, not 340

The overall computer and Transmission matter a lot
It's all about the shifts and the gear ratios. Those Ferraris could do 62 in first gear. The Supra can only do around 32. It's geared super low. But has quick shifts to make up for it. The trade-off is around town it's constantly shifting and they're annoying as hell to drive as daily drivers. I'll tell you the novelty of low geared 8 speed transmissions wears off really quick. It's made me miss my old 1991 twin turbo Dodge stealth where I could hit 80 in second gear.

That is pretty much what is happening. BMW is purposely retarding the performance of that engine so they can up-sell folks on M versions at crazy mark up.

It's just an M sport, like a 320d with M optik pack
The M Z4 is a different story from the M3/4/5/6, it’s essentially a Z4 with the M optics as standard so they naturally won’t keep up with the full M-line cars. Kind of like what they did with the M330i, Z4 M, and then the M760li (Though this ones a exception as it’s faster then a M6...)

It is to be expected. The engine is capable of producing over 450hp without mechanical changes. BMW positiones this at their lower end, so it can't be quicker than an M4 convertible for example. Toyota on the other hand considers this as their highest tier, so extra power doesn't upset the natural order in their range. And if a few software changes give 40 or 50hp more it is an easy step. All toyota needed to build a nice car was a big help from the Germans.

Different dynos will show different numbers. That dyno was generous. Even the same dyno will differ from run to run. Probably 350 is more realistic.

I think they thought they could remap the press cars to get good reviews and get away with it, because no one would strap one to a dyno and work it out, but then someone did.

There's also a 300lb difference between the cars. No one will deny that the Supra is made more for track, the Z4 more for touring. In the US, 382hp is what's listed for both of them. However, with my 2024 Z4 M40i, and according to my on board computer, I've gotten up to 400hp with everything stock.

If that were true, it would be making less than 300 hp at the wheels, BUT IT MAKES ALMOST FOUR FUCKING HUNDRED. AT THE WHEELS.
