There’s no such thing as a boring Hagerty video, especially when Cammisa’s at the helm, you can count on the automotive journalism to be top notch. They’ve really taken it to a whole new level with the production quality. The way they compliment the new machines by throwing cars from yesterday into the fold. No one else is doing it quite like Hagerty.
Since Hagerty by virtue of car auctions will have access to cool cars like this far into the future, (and hopefuly enough cash to fuel them up) they stand poised to take over this genre, and not just from Top Gear. Acceleration competition will be a moot point with EV's...to the point that physics (and good sense for a road legal car) will limit just how fast 60 mph can be reached from a stop. All other car journos will be busy trying to get people excited about the latest outlandish bodywork and interiors that have more LCD (or LED, OLED whatever) screens covering every square inch than they do plastics or leather. (pleather far more likely) People will get excited about that stuff for a while but then the shark will eventually be jumped and car makers are left trying to reinvent the wheel...and not just the steering wheel, thats already been done. We can't see it now because of all the cool looking new EV's that will be coming out in the next decade or so, but this is the beginning of the end of personal transportation. The car companies that survive will be left competing for the best mass transit vehicles...self driving electric busses, high speed trains etc..
This was such a captivating episode to watch. I love how you guys created a story arc that went from the IS500’s old-school nature to the insane progress of the S58 in the M4. Long live Toyota, Lexus, and BMW. They’re making some seriously fun cars.

I can confidently say I’m pleased that I just bought an IS500 sight unseen today. It’s a dinosaur in comparison to every other car in its class. What can I say, I’m an old man who wants to hear a V8.

Here's why the m240i won and the supra was behind. All wheel drive. Sometimes the extra weight of the m240i doesn't matter when all wheel drive gets it off the line perfectly and the horsepower keeps it going hard. The supra was catching up to it quick it would have passed it if the distance was longer. The 400lb difference didn't make a difference in the quarter mile. If the supra had awd it would do 0-60 in 3.4 and 1/4 mile faster than m240i
Aside from Jason and Randy in the same video, the effects and production quality of this series is premium. The edit team are true masters at the craft! Amazing content!
This video was even better than anticipated. Most drag race videos are filled with senseless rambling and a small bit of action. Not Hagerty... You guys are killing the game! Everyone knows toyota wouldn't take bmw's stuff unless they validated that the b58 is reliable enough, that's why the supra has a b58. Toyota kept sending parts back to bmw because they didn't pass toyota's testing.
What a conspiracy theory. The b58 was existing before the Supra and therefore the manufacturing process was already set up. BMW indeed improved the engine with the years, but the first iteration was already a beast. Part of the reason is that they cut costs by sharing parts between diesel and gasoline engines and therefore have them set up for higher forces. Nonetheless already the predecessors of the b58 have been very good and have great tuning potential. Another thing is that the the engineers already had the s58 in mind which is used nearly unchanged in gt racing cars. Toyota has nothing to do with it. They are lucky to find a manufacturer that builds stuff like that and was willing to build a car in this segment, because they also wanted to have a new z4.
@@omnihein9322 literally no fueling mods needed, just a downpipe and you're at 700hp on pump gas, on an ethanl blend they hit 800hp. 9.6 quarter mile with a simple downpipe.... crazyyyy
@@iKrakenOfficial I mean, I would skip the fuelling mods all together tbh, Red bull drift brothers made 1040hp on pump gas with only upgraded turbos, port injection, and some light modifications to the head geometry. Can't wait for my m3 xdrive to arrive, though I'll wait for the warranty to end before I do any mods and I won't be doing anything too crazy.

Looking at these videos, they give EV's too much credit for killing off the interesting car. Just look at nearly all BMW's and porkers from the past decade, then look at the Supra.

I watch these vids simply because Jason is fantastic! He has the magic that very few do (Clarkson, Hammond, May) then you sprinkle in a little Randy and you realize you really have something special here. Focus on this formula and watch things thrive! Review old stuff when theres nothing new, possibilities are endless!
On a side note what I love the most about this channel is that it delivers on what gear heads want to hear and see with no extra silly stuff or boring content. Hagerty delivers! :)
There is a passenger in the Supra during the race on 3 way B58 that gives it a big disadvantage not enough weight difference to catch up to AWD Xdrive BMW.

eh Supra is on the strictly two door Z4 platform. The 2 and 3 are much more similar to each other since 2 is just a chopped wheelbase 3 but still has back seats
@@papa_pt not really it's still the same CLAR platform. BMW has never been the best at building dedicated sportscars since they always just rework existing ( usually 3-series ) platforms. Hence why the BMW Z4 weigh a lot for what was supposed to be a "dedicated sportscar". BMW is at their best when building practical fast saloons. Side note : exception could be the Z8. I'm not saying it's bespoke, I just haven't checked.
@@thatcopenguy if you're going off CLAR you could call the Supra and X6 siblings too. It's actually pretty good on weight what other modern sports car (minus Porsche) around that PRICE w/ at least a 6 cyl weighs 3400lbs in the US?
Great vid man, this race isn't ideal for the supra but high power rwd manual brought the biggest smile which is where a lot of newer cars fall short, they've been made to be fast with most average drivers where as it takes a lot more to handle something like the supra
What most people don't know is that the M240i has the same software throttle mapping as the M5 CS. The M340i and Supra do not, as you can tell in this video. And...of course BMW wouldn't give Toyota all it's goodies even though I love the new Supra. Great video, love that 2JZ!
@@KillswitchRobie828 Those engines are not reliable or bulletproof like the legendary 2JZ. Outside of hardcore bmw fans nobody lusts after the S50/S54 M88 like the 2JZ.
The production quality keeps getting better and better! But that was evident from episode 1. The secret sauce is that this doesn't feel like the typical car reviews or comparisons where the hosts just read numbers and feign scripted emotions. Jason is having mad fun, and it shows in every segment. Also, great to have Randy on the show. Always loved him on Motor Trend.
@@R_o_b_e_r_t You said speed as if you meant straight line performance. Yes, M340i has better cornering but the IS500 has a better steering feedback. The front of the Lexus communicates better with the driver, however the BMW has better grip and better exiting speed thanks to its AWD. At the end of the day I chose the IS500 over its German competitors because it actually has a soul and a character, unlike the others that felt dull because of all the electronics taking over the car control. Drive both around the track and you will understand what I mean.
THIS is what 2JZGTE engines do best! They reel in their opponent’s, catching in the top-end, 2nd half of the race. Once you get past 3rd gear, it hooks and all that power is no match for most of the competition. 2JZGTE for life! 👊😎

As a life long gearhead that does auto X, track days, works lives, and breathes cars, I honestly think cars today are too damn fast. You can't use this power other than at a race track
Great Video! But to make a comparison with a drag built MK4 and the M4, this should of been done on a prepped track. You can have all the power in the world, if you can't put it down then a lot of other cars will definitely make you look slow. I bet the MK4 would of hooked a lot faster, making the numbers less at the finish line.
I think this is a point that a lot of people miss. It’s obvious that you need a prepped track to make a drag car work, but 90% of people don’t get that (believe me you’d be surprised). This needed to be done for them to see.
the car was likely setup for preped surface aswell meaning that if it has boost by gear/ speed it was way over what it should be aiming at, launching with anti lag on also didn't help as it should be making enough power without it.
Fun video; those BMW engines are no joke. Having never driven any of them, I'm curious as to how the driving experience is beyond the engine though? I've heard a number of critics say that BMWs no longer have the driving dynamics they once did.
People who criticize BMW driving dynamics are not saying that they're bad, because the M cars are always perfectly balanced with a lot of touch. Mainly the complaints come from old school BMW fans, the ones who fell in love with the e30s or e46s, those cars were powerful and veery LIGHT. Nowadays, even the M2s which are the closest modern beamer to those old ones I mentioned, still weight around 1700kg, which is not close to light at all
From what I heard, these new BMWs are so efficient they are void of any excitement. If you're looking for something fun, you may want to look elsewhere.
The production on these little vids is insane! 👏🏻 Randy is one of the all time greats! Such is the progress indeed. Stock factory warrantied engines with stock drive trains absolutely blitzing the straight line. Although, the crazy turbo bov on that Supra is really nostalgic. 😉👏🏻 Keep them coming everyone! From a rolling race the Supra would beat the M240i. xDrive always wins in drag races, especially pretty short ones. Anyway, insane production quality! Love these!
@@onlystockcars3769 There has been lot of races done. Supra walks the m240i on roll you can search if you want. This is one video and one run but it's a fact that Supra is noticeably faster on a roll race.
You can clearly see the Supra had a slower start and then kept on pulling on 340i and catching up slowly to m240i so the trap speed doesn't look right. It's going at least 2 mph faster than 340i clearly the way it's pulling on it.
“With 3 times the horsepower you would have thought the Supra would have annihilated the M4.” No one in their right mind with even a shred of car knowledge is going to think a 25 year old 1200hp rwd manual transmission Supra is going to annihilate a new awd M4 in the 1/4 mile from a dig 😂.
If the race was done on a prepped surface track the results would have been alot different coz the supra would have had more traction but this was done on a normal surface and clearly anyone who knows about rwd cars with 1000+hp manual knows it's not going to be easy beating a AWD computer shifting car in a quarter mile still you can see once the supra Mk4 got traction it started reeling that m4 in as if it was not even floored none other then less all of these cars are Damm good in there own different ways and like Jason said enjoy them while you can coz soon there will be no 2UR-GSE V8,2JZ-GTE sound no B58 or S58 which will be a shame for the car enthusiasts

I think the Supra is slower because of the close ratios. I think it’s because of the great torque not being used properly. Sometimes close gear ratios are not best, it can even cause the car to have to spin the tires more or activate traction control more etc, just my theory. I would like to see them with the same ratios and then race

I think everyone hating the new Supra is awesome. What’s happening right now is quite literally the exact same story to happen to the Mk4. Toyota makes a sports car, people complain about it, no one buys it, then people realise that it has the world’s best straight 6. Only this time, people are slowly realising that.
They definitely did. The reason why I ;9!5 believe the conspiracy theory that Jason made is that the GR Supra actually makes more power than the BMW cars if you were to put them on the dyno. And Toyota has done some work on these cars for sure.

Looking at these videos, they give EV's too much credit for killing off the interesting car. Just look at nearly all BMW's and porkers from the past decade, then look at the Supra.

This production is CRAZY
I watch these vids simply because Jason is fantastic! He has the magic that very few do (Clarkson, Hammond, May) then you sprinkle in a little Randy and you realize you really have something special here. Focus on this formula and watch things thrive! Review old stuff when theres nothing new, possibilities are endless!
Respect to the audio engineer on this one. Hard to capture something like a 2JZ without the audio clipping like crazy.

There is a passenger in the Supra during the race on 3 way B58 that gives it a big disadvantage not enough weight difference to catch up to AWD Xdrive BMW.

eh Supra is on the strictly two door Z4 platform. The 2 and 3 are much more similar to each other since 2 is just a chopped wheelbase 3 but still has back seats
@@papa_pt not really it's still the same CLAR platform. BMW has never been the best at building dedicated sportscars since they always just rework existing ( usually 3-series ) platforms. Hence why the BMW Z4 weigh a lot for what was supposed to be a "dedicated sportscar".
BMW is at their best when building practical fast saloons.
Side note : exception could be the Z8. I'm not saying it's bespoke, I just haven't checked.

Great vid man, this race isn't ideal for the supra but high power rwd manual brought the biggest smile which is where a lot of newer cars fall short, they've been made to be fast with most average drivers where as it takes a lot more to handle something like the supra
What most people don't know is that the M240i has the same software throttle mapping as the M5 CS. The M340i and Supra do not, as you can tell in this video. And...of course BMW wouldn't give Toyota all it's goodies even though I love the new Supra. Great video, love that 2JZ!

Man the sound of the 2JZ is just classic. No B58 or other BMW engine (modded or not) can match the sweet sound of a nice single turbo 2JZ.

The 2JZ is modified. And B58s have already been making over 1000HP on Stock Block!
Can we all agree the Bimmer i6 is also underrated from the factory. I've seen references to it actually making 420+ HP.

The secret sauce is that this doesn't feel like the typical car reviews or comparisons where the hosts just read numbers and feign scripted emotions. Jason is having mad fun, and it shows in every segment.

You said speed as if you meant straight line performance. Yes, M340i has better cornering but the IS500 has a better steering feedback. The front of the Lexus communicates better with the driver, however the BMW has better grip and better exiting speed thanks to its AWD.
At the end of the day I chose the IS500 over its German competitors because it actually has a soul and a character, unlike the others that felt dull because of all the electronics taking over the car control.
Drive both around the track and you will understand what I mean.
THIS is what 2JZGTE engines do best! They reel in their opponent’s, catching in the top-end, 2nd half of the race. Once you get past 3rd gear, it hooks and all that power is no match for most of the competition.

with some tech its not like one can't do traction control which was really needed in that scenario

Great Video! But to make a comparison with a drag built MK4 and the M4, this should of been done on a prepped track. You can have all the power in the world, if you can't put it down then a lot of other cars will definitely make you look slow. I bet the MK4 would of hooked a lot faster, making the numbers less at the finish line.

I think this is a point that a lot of people miss. It’s obvious that you need a prepped track to make a drag car work, but 90% of people don’t get that (believe me you’d be surprised). This needed to be done for them to see.
the car was likely setup for preped surface aswell meaning that if it has boost by gear/ speed it was way over what it should be aiming at, launching with anti lag on also didn't help as it should be making enough power without it.
Fun video; those BMW engines are no joke. Having never driven any of them, I'm curious as to how the driving experience is beyond the engine though? I've heard a number of critics say that BMWs no longer have the driving dynamics they once did.
Critics are mainly on the numb steering feel. BMW still has the better driving dynamics than it’s competitors including IS500.
I have the new M3 6 speed. It is by far the most insane vehicle you can buy for under 80k. It does not want to lose grip, it just hooks and goes
People who criticize BMW driving dynamics are not saying that they're bad, because the M cars are always perfectly balanced with a lot of touch. Mainly the complaints come from old school BMW fans, the ones who fell in love with the e30s or e46s, those cars were powerful and veery LIGHT. Nowadays, even the M2s which are the closest modern beamer to those old ones I mentioned, still weight around 1700kg, which is not close to light at all
From what I heard, these new BMWs are so efficient they are void of any excitement. If you're looking for something fun, you may want to look elsewhere.

From a rolling race the Supra would beat the M240i. xDrive always wins in drag races, especially pretty short ones.

@@onlystockcars3769 There has been lot of races done. Supra walks the m240i on roll you can search if you want. This is one video and one run but it's a fact that Supra is noticeably faster on a roll race.
You can clearly see the Supra had a slower start and then kept on pulling on 340i and catching up slowly to m240i so the trap speed doesn't look right. It's going at least 2 mph faster than 340i clearly the way it's pulling on it.

If the race was done on a prepped surface track the results would have been alot different coz the supra would have had more traction but this was done on a normal surface and clearly anyone who knows about rwd cars with 1000+hp manual knows it's not going to be easy beating a AWD computer shifting car in a quarter mile still you can see once the supra Mk4 got traction it started reeling that m4 in as if it was not even floored none other then less all of these cars are Damm good in there own different ways and like Jason said enjoy them while you can coz soon there will be no 2UR-GSE V8,2JZ-GTE sound no B58 or S58 which will be a shame for the car enthusiasts

I think the Supra is slower because of the close ratios. I think it’s because of the great torque not being used properly. Sometimes close gear ratios are not best, it can even cause the car to have to spin the tires more or activate traction control more etc, just my theory. I would like to see them with the same ratios and then race

I think everyone hating the new Supra is awesome. What’s happening right now is quite literally the exact same story to happen to the Mk4. Toyota makes a sports car, people complain about it, no one buys it, then people realise that it has the world’s best straight 6. Only this time, people are slowly realising that.

I feel like you should give more credit to BMW for the fantastic car that the Supra is.
They definitely did. The reason why I ;9!5 believe the conspiracy theory that Jason made is that the GR Supra actually makes more power than the BMW cars if you were to put them on the dyno. And Toyota has done some work on these cars for sure.
