I just think it’s as simple as an old Nissan FM platform introduced in 2001. While the bmw platform is 20 years new in comparison . In the 90’s no one would say a 1992 M3 is better than a R32 GTR . Obviously Nissan was able to put money in it.
I’d just finished filming Barbie and bought my supra , then the strike dug in and I drove the supra all summer around Derbyshire 🇬🇧 It saved my sanity while still waiting for films to start now. I love the car and it makes me confidant and has taught me how to drive enthusiastically. 9/10 . Driven and wrecked most cars for film , this car is cheap for the thrills it delivers . Oh and it returns 45mpg on a steady cruise.
As for Z that bwm exposed them they really really have to up their game its like looking at someone driving this high horse power eg/ek you can see drive is really working hard
Great video, the new zed from rear 3/4 is very 300 twin turbo, and those used to go hard when fettled (very difficult job) the 80A supra had its share of issues too, rattling hatch, blind spot. But which then is similar to now.. i would probably take a relatively stock Z4/Supra..I love that butt😂 but watching the Z showed that it's more of a driver's car, depending on experience.. Don't listen to the nay sayers/haters.. I've watched your stuff since ignition 1
Great vid guys. I get a lot of stick for the cat having BMW dna but to be frank I drive alone on empty country lanes and could give a crap, it make me feel happy when I hoon around the lanes .
I wanted a fast touring sportscar with space for two plus luggage. Just finished 3000km in Tasmania with Z. Extremely comfortable and quick. Very happy. Way better than my 370Z Nismo. Initial thoughts were steering too light in the new Z. It isn't.
So it's a sports car vs a sporty car? Clearly the spots car is better on the track in every way, the differences were very noticeable in the driving dynamics and steering input. The suspension on the z looked bouncy, so maybe too low compression damping? No wonder it has such bad traction. Why would you put drivability as a draw when it's the biggest difference between them? That aside, this was an awesome test! I love how you kept the money the same and tuned on each car in between runs to try to give them the best chance. This is much closer to what the real experience would be with owning these cars. Most channels do not do this, and will just lazily test something, as is, and call it a day, teaching us nothing useful.
I’m interested if you do more testing with the Z shocks and get something with better refinement and support. It sounds like they’re blowing through the travel.
Didn't a performance channel get the Z to 600hp with an E85 tune and stock internals? I think a lot more could've been squeezed out of the Z with all that had been done to it
I’m still going to get the Nissan Z 6 speed. For a couple reasons. It’s cheaper compare to buying a Supra that’s manual. 2 I like the nissan Z for keeping the Emergency brake handle the Supra is a push button. 3 I hate the fake vents on the Supra. The main reason is the price though. Here in AZ a Nissan Z 6 speed going for 44 msrp
It would be interesting to see the Supra in automatic v manual transmission around the circuit. I wouldn't be surprised if the automatic Supra is faster again? I have yet to find a back to back Supra comparison, auto and manual around a circuit. Additionally doesn't the manual Supra have a shorter differential v the auto version to try and claw back it's lost straight line speed?
Which is why if you read anything about the supra vs Z4 they're completely different cars to drive. And after driving both its true. Toyota tuned the car and suspension how they wanted, it's only built in Austria, how it drives is all toyota.
@@tiburonguy2004anyone can do suspension tuning my guy. And the suspension is quite mediocre, but I don’t blame it as it’s a street car. Those who think the Supra handles amazing have never driven an actual track car.
@GarciaQ60 did I say it handled like a race car? No I said it drives completely different than the car it was built beside and is the sister car to it. Obviously there's big enough differences in the suspension tuning of the supra and the Z4 to make them drive completely differently. Which is what most reviewers, drivers etc said about both cars as well.
The Z looked a lot more squirrely on the track than the Supra. As a daily driver the Supra will break your back whereas the Z would be more comfortable.
I would love to see a test for the size on wheels and tires example 17inc vs 18inc vs 19inc vs 20inc and except looks how much of a difference i. A lap time
Thats a great comparison. Both cars I'd love to have. But I'd prefer the Z, mostly because of looks. I wonder how the Nissmo stacks up vs the Supra, they are bassically the same price.
Not the outcome I wanted to see or expected as the supra doesn't even use double wishbone suspension but I do really appreciate this video. Would love to see one on the supra vs c7 now!
With the limited amount of travel and great tyres simple Mac struts up front do deliver great feel and control. Predictable I’d call it . I’m addicted .
Nice comparison. Wonder if different mods would have a different effect and result. Maybe, maybe not. I do like the Supra but money is money and I really like my Z. But certainly needs some upgrades…
Not rwd but gr yaris with tyres and race seat 53.769 second lap. Cheaper and 3 less cylinders(track name and gr yaris, first video that popped up) 😅 tough decision responsible me wants the supra, old hooligan me wants the z. But what colour is the best on the supra?
Tight track and rwd turbo cars arent a great match so lap times dont reflect potential. Our BRZ with coilovers and tyres did 53s as well. Supra is just so much fun to drive! Grey is our favourite colour
Add these mods.. heat exchanger, 3 inch downpipe, cat back exhaust, CAI and Ecutek will see you hit 450whp If you want serious, horsepower gains for under 10K, add new turbos, a straight bolt on!
I had a 2021 Black A91 Supra for 3 years, full Fi Valvetronic exhaust with carbon tips, Eventuri carbon intake, carbon Street Hunter wing and carbon mirror caps. 27k miles later, oil pump died, warranty covered it. But then I got a call from Nissan to go check out the new Black 2024 NISMO Z, after a test drive and the weekend to think it all over, I traded her in for the new NISMO. I will say I miss the loud pops and bangs the Supra got and the Aggressive looks it had, definitely a head turner. But the NISMO version of the Z takes things to a whole different level than the normal Z. I love both cars, I guess the NISMO was that shiny new thing that Nissan did a thing with, and I wanted that thing more lol.
@@peterbiviano747 I think the car it’s a bit overpriced for what it offers. Coz I preordered the car long ago before it announced. Outdated interior for the price tag, Acceptable performance but not outstanding at the range. Also I need a back seat for baby. I was expecting the nismo to have more power and more refined interior. For this money I would get the RS3 just because i can’t fit myself in the Supra.
I wanted the Nissan Z, but good thing I bought the a90 Supra. It might be a Toyota tuned BMW, but at the end of the day, it’s still a better car. Great review/video.
Didn’t you guys fit a softer street / drag coilover to the Z? Semantics I’m sure. It does look soft still around the drag. Both incredible cars. Hard to deny how good that B58 supra is. That steering wheel on the supra though. Gross 😊 Well done to Nissan for keeping it Nissan.
Shorter wheelbase helps the BMW. Personally, I'd have changed front and rear sway bars on the Nissan instead of arms. The Z is also tuned, so peak power and torque engagement points in the rev range didn't look ideal either. Gear ratios also seemed better suited to the BMW for this track. Turning ratio looked better on the Nissan in my opinion. Overall balance and chassis compliance was definitely better on the BMW.
@@Wiggy321sway bars would have made a massive difference, as they are so small stock. Steering input, and grip would have been massively improved. It’s a modification most people overlook.
A sharp twisty track... maybe on a track like Barcelona or even better mugello Italy the z could've done better... but the black n gold bbs looking wheels are better in aesthetics
I actually think the times would be closer or even in the z's favour on a more power focussed circuit. Seeing the brz net a lap time that close to the z proves that. As much as on paper the supra was quicker I still can't get past the fact that it's a BMW. Would like to see a comparison in 5 years between the two about their respective maintenance costs. All in all great content none the less 👌
Yep the bushings in the Proto on down are for just touring and putting around town really. Maybe gunning it at a stop light every now and then, Nissan is targeting the older market that thinks the Zupra is too harsh. The Nismo bushings for the steering rack, rear subframe and arms/uprights (or better yet some SPL Parts bushings as they are released) totally transforms the car into a track weapon. Super direct feel and road manners are still civil assuming one gets a great set of coilovers. My old G went from a car with a lot of dead space to a go kart once I upgraded the bushings. Takes a weekend and a good friend or two but totally worth it!

I love the car and it makes me confidant and has taught me how to drive enthusiastically. 9/10 . Driven and wrecked most cars for film , this car is cheap for the thrills it delivers . Oh and it returns 45mpg on a steady cruise.
What steering wheel has been fitted to the supra?
As for Z that bwm exposed them they really really have to up their game its like looking at someone driving this high horse power eg/ek you can see drive is really working hard
There are cars with the Q platform with over 500+ horsepower at the wheels and had the cars for 4 to 5 years… a daily Drive
You nailed it Hawko
Z looked old school & Supra so refined 🍻👍🏼
Great video, the new zed from rear 3/4 is very 300 twin turbo, and those used to go hard when fettled (very difficult job) the 80A supra had its share of issues too, rattling hatch, blind spot. But which then is similar to now.. i would probably take a relatively stock Z4/Supra..I love that butt😂 but watching the Z showed that it's more of a driver's car, depending on experience..
Don't listen to the nay sayers/haters.. I've watched your stuff since ignition 1
I wonder how these two compare to a C7 corvette with manual on the same tires….
Great vid guys. I get a lot of stick for the cat having BMW dna but to be frank I drive alone on empty country lanes and could give a crap, it make me feel happy when I hoon around the lanes .
Watching John's hands tell the whole story. There is so much less work managing the Supra at the limit.
T or A if mods equalled them out on performance?? Which one do you want for the night?
It’s a shame the front of the Z looks so pan compared to how good the rear looks.
Great video mate.
I'm just happy that both are proper with manuals. This is the way.
Thanks for noticing that we take testing much more seriously. 👍
I’m interested if you do more testing with the Z shocks and get something with better refinement and support. It sounds like they’re blowing through the travel.
The shocks are designed for the street.
Didn't a performance channel get the Z to 600hp with an E85 tune and stock internals? I think a lot more could've been squeezed out of the Z with all that had been done to it
Yeah, with another 20K worth of intercoolers and fuel system
@MotiveVideo sounds about right lol 😆
The ecutek tune has been out for a longer time now. Surely it can be pushed harder and have burnout mode redone properly
3:45 20inch wheels will actually make the car slower. Why didn't you guys put 19s?
The car was running on 19s at the track.
Great video was waiting for this
I’m still going to get the Nissan Z 6 speed.
@0:15 "best turbo sports car outta Japan" - Well the Supra is made in Austria, so doesn't that mean the Z wins by default? 😋
That's what I thought
Which is why if you read anything about the supra vs Z4 they're completely different cars to drive. And after driving both its true. Toyota tuned the car and suspension how they wanted, it's only built in Austria, how it drives is all toyota.
@@tiburonguy2004anyone can do suspension tuning my guy. And the suspension is quite mediocre, but I don’t blame it as it’s a street car. Those who think the Supra handles amazing have never driven an actual track car.
@@2seepsaying that with Q60 in your name is hilarious
@GarciaQ60 did I say it handled like a race car? No I said it drives completely different than the car it was built beside and is the sister car to it. Obviously there's big enough differences in the suspension tuning of the supra and the Z4 to make them drive completely differently. Which is what most reviewers, drivers etc said about both cars as well.
The Z looked a lot more squirrely on the track than the Supra. As a daily driver the Supra will break your back whereas the Z would be more comfortable.
Great video. I have watched it twice and didn't see John's times
Literally on the screen at the end of each lap
Fair enough. But why did you only read out your times.
Would be better if you had all the best times, on the screen at the same time
The lap time for John's laps come up on screen at the end of the lap.
I would love to see a test for the size on wheels and tires example 17inc vs 18inc vs 19inc vs 20inc and except looks how much of a difference i. A lap time
😂 I feel the word Japanese should be in parentheses
*Edit, I meant to say quotation marks and not parentheses. Sorry everyone for any confusion
Why tho? We all Know already, by reading Supra vs Z?!
@@davidholmes1771 Because only one is a Japanese car
@@AtticusG3 Understood.
We have half a clue what we're doing, as does Shockworks and DNA Autosport.
Add these mods.. heat exchanger, 3 inch downpipe, cat back exhaust, CAI and Ecutek will see you hit 450whp
If you want serious, horsepower gains for under 10K, add new turbos, a straight bolt on!
It would great if you guys bought a cheap B58 car like a 340i and made it a crazy horsepower machine like they are doing in the USA!
Did the BRZ ever get a lap set out there once the tune was done?
Not after tune. no
Scalpel meet blunt knife.
Good analogy.
In aussie land, the price difference is huge. Not so much in the US. The Z proto costs as much as the gr supra
And dare I say the Supra is better than the BMW that shares the platform? Hated the looks of the current Supra but gotta say they have aged well.
Why not in the z bigger turbos down pipes/exhaust tune tires wouldn’t that be a better spend
Pretty solid video
😢😢😢i gave up my nismo Z for a GRyaris. Love the GR. Nice to see you on the screen JB. Hope see you at Wakefield some time in the future.
Was about to pull trigger on Z in 2minds wats your biggest gripe I’m in a amg a45s atm
Can we do a G87 M2 comparison? Maybe the G87 vs Supra or G87 vs F87 M2..?
Savagegeese has a pretty good one already
Can we try with a Nissan Z NISMO
i dont really care which is better i just want the Z since it looks like a modern 240z
Gross 😊
Well done to Nissan for keeping it Nissan.
It’s a modification most people overlook.
z s fitment was off needs spacers badly xD whuld help in corners too .. might be a 1s upgrade? xD
So the question now I guess is... is the BMW Z4 better than a Nissan Z?
Z still got that infamous “trumpeter” sound! 😂
A sharp twisty track... maybe on a track like Barcelona or even better mugello Italy the z could've done better... but the black n gold bbs looking wheels are better in aesthetics
Great stuff.
in general a lot of hate for the supra. not refering to this video, i assume because of the BMW colab. The MK5 is an incredible machine.
Correct answer: BMW. BMW makes the best RWD turbocharged coupe out of Japan
So you put an ecutek tune on the Z but not the Supra... With nothing but a tune my Supra put down over 500wtq on 93...
Watch feature again and listen to the point of the exercise.
Why not use the v1 nismo wheels
I actually think the times would be closer or even in the z's favour on a more power focussed circuit. Seeing the brz net a lap time that close to the z proves that. As much as on paper the supra was quicker I still can't get past the fact that it's a BMW. Would like to see a comparison in 5 years between the two about their respective maintenance costs. All in all great content none the less 👌
Power to weight ratio is same and The Supra is a weapon on large tracks. It would be worse for the Z
The Z is ultimately a fun street car with track ability. The Supra is a track weapon.
The Z Nismo is night and day different to the Proto. It's quick and drives as good as anything else you can think of. Time for you to upgrade?
Honda Prelude soon
Here in America the z is about 10k more than the Supra. I have yet to see one on the road here in Dallas.
Wheel difference?
Great content
Where are the 30k in mods
